Unregistered coursework showing up at the Teahouse

A student has rewritten an article in draft space and was upset that it wouldn't be accepted as a replacement. See Wikipedia:Teahouse/Questions#Major rewrite as draft?. He says a number of others are also doing this as a class assignment. Have you had experience with this before? What is the best way to proceed? StarryGrandma (talk) 03:03, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

  • Hi StarryGrandma. I don't have an immediate answer to the draft issue, aside from my personal experience w/ volunteer editors who have edited in large chunks for years without influence as well as my experience with students in our program who have chosen to work on draft updates to existing articles and comported themselves pretty well. The discussion over on the teahouse seems pretty lively (for anyone reading this page interested in looking into it). I'm going to try to get in touch with the student to see if their professor is interested in support from WikiEd. Thanks for the pointer. Adam (Wiki Ed) (talk) 18:37, 18 December 2015 (UTC)

Unregistered coursework: Strathclyde University CS104

Hi, please see Draft talk:List of computer museums in the world. User Cs104group142015 says that he/she has been given a student assignment in the course "CS104 (Information and Information Systems) and it's part of the Computer and Information Sciences program of Strathclyde University". The student does not appear to be registered in any courses and I can't find the course at Special:Courses. What should be done about this? -- intgr [talk] 12:52, 11 December 2015 (UTC)

Armenia-related unregistered coursework

It seems that an Armenia-related unregistered coursework is going on per this comment. At least three articles are involved; namely Vorotan cascade (created as Vorotan Hydropower Plant), Spandaryan Hydro Power Plant, and Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant, and among students editing are Anrimarutyan (talk · contribs · count), Gags98 (talk · contribs · count), Ghevond Mirzakhanyan (talk · contribs · count), Vaspur97 (talk · contribs · count), Chris.kiloyan (talk · contribs · count), Koko.nanahji (talk · contribs · count), MkrtchyanMeri (talk · contribs · count), Apavenstepanyan (talk · contribs · count), Taguhi sinanyan (talk · contribs · count), and Vahagn1996 (talk · contribs · count). @David Saroyan: @Lilitik22: Could you please reach out to this course to help them with resources from Wikimedia Armenia's Education Program? Շնորհակալություն, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 17:09, 11 December 2015 (UTC)
Dear Anna jan, we are aware of that coursework, there are students of American University of Armenia. They're assigned a coursework and the lecturer asked us to organize a workshop for her students which we did yesterday. Students preferred to work together on one of the users' sandbox. We will keep helping them in the future as well. --David Saroyan (talk) 08:51, 12 December 2015 (UTC)
Thank you, David jan. I'm glad that they're getting your support. Շնորհակալություն, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 19:08, 14 December 2015 (UTC)
Dear David jan. I am sorry to say this but this assignment is probably in the side of bad examples. A number of participating students do not have understanding about the Wikipedia core pillars. First of all, there was quite a mess up with Spandaryan Hydro Power Plant article when students tried to replaced a new article instead of editing the existing one. This was fortunately sorted out. There was also problem of copy-pasting of large parts of copyrighted information. Next problematic article was . Vorotan Complex‎ with a copy-paste moves of the article. This s also stable now but needs some check for copyrighted material. Hrazdan Thermal Power Plant was created by copy-pasting large blocks of copyrighted material. However, this article is cleaned up now and students understand the issue and were cooperative. The most problematic is the Yerevan Thermal Power Plant which was also created by copy-pasting copyrighted material from external sources. There was also attempts to clean and copyedit this article; however, there is very strong ownership feelings by reverting this article continuously back to the copyrighted version, removing maintenance tags, and blanking talk pager discussion. Please so also discussion at my talk page (User_talk:Beagel#Hello_2). This is quite depressive. Beagel (talk) 18:08, 19 December 2015 (UTC)
Dear Beagel, I have to agree with you. This is a most unfortunate incident. Thank you for posting this summary on the Noticeboard. And thank you for the care you took to instruct the users on your talk page. I have reached out David Saroyan and asked him to reply to you here. Sincerely, Anna Koval (WMF) (talk) 11:11, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Dear Beagel and Anna Koval (WMF), thank you very much for letting me know about this. I'm quite surprised by what I see here. I'm so sorry things turned out so. It was not our original idea to teach them to edit, neither are they part of our education program. We were asked to teach how to edit Wikipedia and how it works and we did so. We also agreed to support them in case they have questions but we got no further requests. I assure you that during the workshop we've told them that violating copyrights, deleting the content of the articles etc. is bad and Wikipedia does not work so. We tried to explain them that editing on en wiki is not the best option for non-native speakers. "It'd be hard" we said. But they wanted to edit only English Wikipedia, "We'll manage that" they answered. The final choice was of course up to them, because it's Wikipedia they are free to edit wherever they want. They have chosen to edit in English violating all Wikipedia pillars about what they were taught. It'd be much easier if they edit on hywiki. Some of us are admins and active editors on hywiki and we could track their edits and help them in Armenian, which we unfortunately can not do here. I see the fault of their professor here. She asked us to teach them and of course she had to track her students activity and see what they are doing on Wikipedia. I think the only solution would be to let their professor know what their students are doing here. That's why I'll try to contact her explaining all the mess her students have made. Dear Beagel, once again I'm so sorry for this, thanks for your great patience toward them. --David Saroyan (talk) 13:30, 20 December 2015 (UTC)
Did something like this ever happened with student assignements before? Beagel (talk) 10:38, 21 December 2015 (UTC)
Hi dear Beagel. I just don't have words... Any harassment, threat is unacceptable in any wikiproject and no matter who the user is should be blocked indefinitely. The most important thing is Wikipedia and its idea which has united all of us here and we should keep all the wikirules in any case. Thank you for your time and support to the students. We appreciate it very much. Sorry once again. --Lilitik22 (talk) 13:07, 22 December 2015 (UTC)

Online Ambassador application: Josve05a

Josve05a

Josve05a (talk · contribs)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I am currently a campus ambassador at Nacka Gymnasium, Sweden for the SvWP-education projects, I believe I can help out online forthe English EDU-program as well.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I am currently an editor on multiple of Wikimedia's different wikis. I am a hardworking wikignome, article reviewer, anti-vandal-fighter, co-dev of Huggle 3 and an helper on IRC.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
Oh this one is hard, I've done so much during my time here. I have reviewed hundreds, if not thousands of AfC's, including scanning for copyright infringements etc. However content wise I have created over a hundred articles on SvWP, but one of my last articles I wrote on enWP was Ingela Agardh. I have in the past reviewed some DYKS and submitted a few, I've also translated articles from English to Swedish, but as I said most of my time goes to help others write articles and assisting them with help.
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
Yes I have. Both in real life as a campus ambasadour and in the IRC help channel #wikipedia-en-help connect (just press connect, or read the disclaimer first).
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Make them feel welcome. If they not not feel welcome upon first contact users most likely turn the other way. Instead of telling users off, we should explain how to do things better.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
I have not had any major conlicts with any editors. I've had one or two altrications regarding if it is okay or not to revert a banned users edits, but nothing major or specifically related to me. I've also been blocked on SvWP two times. The first time for editing to fast (a rule to maximum edit 1 edit/30 secs) and the second time after an involved admin blocked me for using the words "copyright infringement", which was lifted almost immediately.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I edit Wikipedia almost 24/7. I am avalible during most of the day and way over two hours per week.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
I am knowledgeble withing most of the relevent copyright laws and rules which may factor in while writing an article, as I said I am an AfC-reviewer. I would be able to offer consultation with users regarding with what is, and isn't a copyvio and what is allowed on WIkipedia. I would also be able to explain in detail for the teachers if wanted how to identify violations. I have multiple copyvio-check tools to my disposal and a few users to consult when here are discrepencies which requies a second pair of eyes and opinion of the laws.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
I would first talk with the student and expain that their might be a problem with their article. I would also notify the teacher/course leader. I would describe exacly what was rong and how it could be fixed without it being to much work for the student. After the problem had been cleared up would as for an RD1.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is a violation of a copyright law or local rule on Wikipedia. It is were a user have copied content and pasted it in the article. If it is a quotation it is alright if within quotation marks an not to much. There is also the problem of images, which is a different aspect where it comes to copyirght violations. If you uploaded an image which you do not own it is a violation, unless it is under fair use or properly attributed.
  11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I already am an ambassador. Not here on ENwp, however I have compleated all relevant training, and have, in my opinion, enough knowledge to be one here too.

  • Endorse Is it too late for me to endorse this wonderful editor? Josve05a is a great helper on #wikipedia-en-help and incredibly competent. He is definitely a positive. (And everything else L235 said...) — kikichugirl oh hello! 04:08, 15 December 2015 (UTC)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
Please see my Campus Ambassador application.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
Please see my Campus Ambassador application.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
A difficult question! I'm not engaged in pure content creation, but I do gnome here and there. What I really do is expand and copyedit AfCs.
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I've gone from editing a typical "here are cookies!" template to handholding editors on AfCs to helping on -en-help.
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Being able to provide real-time support in a multi-editor system on article drafts from start to finish. The easiest part is the ride - the hard part is getting up to speed.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
No, thankfully. I hate confrontation and do my best to maintain a civil (talk page) environment :^). No blocks or bans, and no RfArbs.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I am able to provide 1 to 2 hours a day for the foreseeable future.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
I'd do my best to teach them how to write good articles without running into cv, as well as show them how to use tools such as copyvios.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
Unsure what you mean by violation, but if you mean my student has an article with cv, then I'd blank the page, and hand hold them in rewriting the article.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
    Use of works without permission.
  11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
Please see my Campus Ambassador application.

Respectfully, E. Lee (talk) 21:43, 16 June 2015 (UTC)

  • Endorse- although new, this MIT student is smart, clueful, and would make a good online ambassador. L235 (t / c / ping in reply) 23:02, 16 June 2015 (UTC)
  • Question When you say "Please see my Campus Ambassador application" is this self-referential to this application, or is there something more elsewhere? Blue Rasberry (talk) 17:55, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
    • Sure thing, I also applied for Campus Ambassador approximately a section or two above on this noticeboard. I was thinking of volunteering over the summer to gain a better grasp of what the Education Program does, and thereby have more knowledge to work off of when proposing that MIT have coursework involving Wikipedia. Cheers, E. Lee (talk) 17:58, 24 June 2015 (UTC)
Ah - I see. Yes you meet all of the expected standards. If you have questions about the education program then ask. I am granting the tools. Blue Rasberry (talk) 18:01, 24 June 2015 (UTC)

  1. Why do you want to be a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I've helped out with some of the educational courses and I may as well make it official, so that people can find me on the list if they need me.
  2. In three sentences or less, summarize your involvement with Wikimedia projects.
I'm an admin and I've been editing since 2006, although heavily in the past few years. I tend to focus on article creation and I've helped save many articles, including some made by students.
  3. Please indicate a few articles to which you have made significant content contributions. (e.g. DYK, GA, FA, major revisions/expansions/copyedits).
Strange Fruit (novel) (expansion, DYK), helped with the recent Chaney-related materials
  4. How have you been involved with welcoming and helping new users on Wikipedia?
I've tried to welcome new students as I find them, as many of them tend to exhibit the same editing patterns and mannerisms, and direct them towards the appropriate pages and offer explanation if their pages have been tagged for deletion (usually the main way I come across them).
  5. What do you see as the most important ways we could welcome newcomers or help new users become active contributors?
Assume good faith is the number one answer, as many students are just completely unaware of policy and what they're doing wrong. The most common issues with student editors tends to be OR and sourcing, as they tend to write their articles like a student paper rather than an encyclopedia article. IE, students can and should insert OR with a paper since it encourages creativity and learning (and aren't expected to source every single claim), but this isn't as good on an encyclopedia article.
  6. Have you had major conflicts with other editors? Blocks or bans? Involvement in arbitration? Feel free to offer context, if necessary.
Myself personally? I've never really been involved with anything myself. I've had the inevitable squabble with other editors over content, mostly over sourcing and notability. In most cases, but not all, it was because I'd reverted or removed an edit that was against policy. I've never been involved with arbitration or blocked.
  7. How often do you edit Wikipedia and check in on ongoing discussions? Will you be available regularly for at least two hours per week, in your role as a mentor?
I tend to do most of my editing while I'm at work since I have a lot of downtime, so I'm not as regularly on when I have a day off. However I'm almost always on at least 2-3 times a week.
  8. How would you make sure your students were not violating copyright laws?
I'd first try to make sure that they had a good understanding of what copyvio was, since prevention is the best way to ensure that it doesn't happen. If assigned to a student, I'd monitor their work to see if there's anything that seems out of the ordinary with their writing style, including doing Google searches for prose.
  9. If one of your students had an issue with copyright violation how would you resolve it?
I'd remove the copyvio. Depending on the amount of copyvio in the article, this could range from reverting the addition, removing the specific portion, or even deletion of the edit history or page. I'd also approach the student and explain why I did this, giving careful explanation as to what is or isn't considered to be acceptable. In most cases the copyvio wasn't done to be malicious, just carelessness or because they didn't think they could sum it up any differently.
  10. In your _own_ words describe what copyright violation is.
A copyright violation is typically the use of material in a way that infers that you are the original author of the work in question, without proper attribution. Copyvio can also happen when someone uses a larger portion of a work than is permitted via current copyright law, even if properly attributed.
  11. What else should we know about you that is relevant to being a Wikipedia Ambassador?
I am a current student myself, so there may be some limitations here and there as the semester grows more hectic. Ideally I don't think that this would interfere with my duties here.

  • Endorse - Kind of a no-brainer endorsement. Very experienced, active, helpful, etc. @Tokyogirl79: I don't know how active the online ambassador program is, but if you think it would enable you to help in certain ways, I say go for it :) — Rhododendrites talk \\ 14:08, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • I'm not sure either, but I figured that I could get added to the list and if that makes me more easily visible to incoming teachers and students so I can help them, then that's worth it in and of itself. Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 14:39, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • @Tokyogirl79 and Rhododendrites: apparently WikiEd has discontinued the online ambassador role in preference for paid employees (see this noticeboard's talk for my post). However, I would wholeheartedly agree that anything which assists teachers and students is a good thing as it'll help curb the ongoing issue we have with good faith but bad quality editing caused from misunderstandings. I too have an application from a while back pending somewhere up there ^ - would either of you consider having a look and endorsing? -- samtar whisper 14:53, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Certainly! Endorsed! It'd be a shame if they discontinued this in favor of paid positions. I can understand that they'd want someone who could devote more time to the cause since they'd be more of an investment (more quality control too, I suppose) but that puts a huge amount of work on the shoulders of a very few people. There should be some way for them to outsource work to vetted editors. (Oh man, where do I sign up for a job with Wikipedia? I can't code beyond the basics we all know here, but still...) Tokyogirl79 (。◕‿◕。) 14:58, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Don't get me wrong, I understand the reasoning :) But I'd rather we had a large list of 'ambassadors' which students can turn to (and then we can in turn direct to a WikiEd employee if needs be) than the current "WikiEd will deal with it, in the meantime we'll revert this edit, warn and ultimately ban" some poor student who's trying to pass an assignment and could grow into a constructive editor. I could write an essay here but it'll clutter up the noticeboard. Thanks for the endorsement :) -- samtar whisper 15:03, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • No problem! (Sneaking in under my volunteer account.) I think that the way you've described is the best way to go. Maybe we could create some sort of structure and a good argument to help organize this a little? If we can get a good list together of core people who could help run things, we could make a good argument for the retaining of online ambassadors. That's something to discuss in another thread, though. Tokyogirl79LVA (talk) 16:33, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
  • Endorse - for the reasons I've posted above, also, I believe Administrators can assign the permission to themselves without going through this process -- samtar whisper 14:53, 28 December 2015 (UTC)
