Comment I don't know the finer points of photography, but I don't understand why this was photographed with a black background. I think that if it were photographed on a white background it would give a better indication of the precise shade of brown of the matrix. Also, if the light were shining from one direction, there would be a slight shadow that would give a better idea of the overall shape and three-dimensionality of the mineral. Comment Thanks! I had a closer look, and I'm pretty sure the black background was added in digital processing- there's a tiny area of white at the bottom, and the border of the black seems to have the characteristic smooth curves and lines generated by a selection process. The matrix might be schist, which would be silvery grey (I just searched for "almandine matrix" and that seems the best match). So I've struck my support.
