About the event[edit]

Over the past year, the Dumfries Stonecarving Project, supported by the Dumfries Historic Buildings Trust, has been working with volunteer researchers who have uncovered a wealth of knowledge about sandstone carvings on buildings all around the town centre. We want to share this information with the rest of the world by creating new articles on Wikipedia -- and we need your help!

The workshops will be led by Dr. Sara Thomas, Scottish Programme Coordinator for Wikimedia UK. Sara will guide everyone through the process, and demonstrate how easy it is to edit and share information. During the workshop, we’ll also be adding information about our local heritage to existing Wikipedia articles.

With 47 million articles in 229 different languages, Wikipedia is now both a well-established force for making knowledge accessible – and a key tool for sharing information. One recent study (https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3039505) suggested that Wiki both shapes and reflects scientific thought, and there is no doubt about its impact worldwide. So consider this is your chance to influence the thinking of thousands!

If you’ve been involved in the Dumfries Stonecarving Project already, you may want to think about what you would like to edit. (For example, would you like to new pages, or add information to existing pages)? Please feel free to do some research in advance and bring materials with you on the day. We will also bring some research and information to the workshop, for you to reference.

Please note that the event is completely accessible for any newcomers who want to learn more about stonecarving in Dumfries through the workshops as well.

This event will take place at Kings Coffee & Books, 12 Queensberry Street, DG1 1EX on Tuesday 30th July from 6pm to 8:30pm. The venue is fully accessible and the event is open for all

How do I prepare?
  • Sign up for the event (see below)
  • Create a Wikipedia account
  • Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided)
  • Learn about editing if you like: Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia for more information
  • Think about what you would like to edit about - you can even prepare some materials to bring with you on the day
  • Lunch will be provided
