Report on 2019 Wikipedia Work

Images on Wikipedia

381 images from the library’s collections received over 13.6 million views on 350 pages across all language Wikipedias and Wikidata. The most popular images are still the map of Paris, the Howard Hawks headshot, Merian C. Cooper's headshot, and the two images from the Ebensee concentration camp. The two images we added to James Stewart's page are also very popular, especially on Christmas day, when they both had over 117,000 views.

Prose on Wikipedia

We improved 51 pages, and together with the new pages, information we added to Wikipedia this year received and continues to receive 9,393 daily views on average. These daily views mostly come from James Stewart’s page, which accounts for around 4,400 views, and the other three most popular pages, which account for another 2,960 views. We edited pages for church history figures like Wilford Woodruff and James E. Talmage, as well as for famous member authors like Stephanie Meyer and Orson Scott Card. Editing pages for well-known figures takes more time and effort, but we feel that extra attention is justified.

We created 13 new pages and nominated 11 pages for the frontpage “Did you know…” (DYK) feature, generating 22,954 additional views for our pages.

Outreach

Rachel Helps organized an edit-a-thon focused on creating pages for children’s books that have won the Coretta Scott King Award. Students from one section of children’s literature and other participants helped us create 18 new pages for these books.

Helps also trained students working at Harold B. Lee Library's Humanities reference desks and in the Writing and Research Lab on how to edit Wikipedia in their downtime. Helps was a peer review coordinator for an article she solicited that was published in WikiJournal of Humanities, where she is a member of the editorial board.
