About the event[edit]

This day is an opportunity for staff to learn about how to edit Wikipedia, and how your organisation can make the most of Wikipedia and other Wikimedia projects. Wikimedian in Residence for Museums Galleries Scotland Sara Thomas will provide training in how to create and edit Wikipedia pages. This is a hands-on session where we will create your user page, and also do some direct editing of Wikipedia. By the end of the day you should feel confident to do more editing in a work context, and also understand more about the benefits of open knowledge for museums & heritage organisations.

How do I prepare?
  • Create a Wikipedia account - please do not include your organisation's name in your username.
  • Bring a laptop (wi-fi will be provided)
  • Think about what kind of material you would like to add to the encyclopedia. Search on Wiki for relevant articles, and please bring reference materials (or links to reference materials) with you on the day. Remember that Wikipedia's policies regarding conflict of interest mean that you should not look to edit an article about yourself, your friends, family, employer or place of work. (An item held in your organisation's collection would be fine, however.)
  • Learn about what makes a good article

Programme[edit]

Should I learn about editing in advance?[edit]

If you'd like to learn about editing in advance you can do so here: Tutorial, or Getting started on Wikipedia. These resources will tell you about editing in Wiki markup. On the day, you'll be shown how to use a little of this markup, but mostly we'll be using the (much more user-friendly) Visual Editor.
