YouTube

This might depend on what the citation is about. For example, if an article is about a notable video which appeared on YouTube, citing the original video would be an obvious convenience for readers who want to view it (presumably, at least some of the people who read a Wikipedia article about a video might also want to view the video itself), but the YouTube video would not be evidence of its own notability. For that, citations of other reliable sources would be necessary. The content of a YouTube video would not be a reliable source for much of anything. Anyone could say anything in a video and upload it to YouTube. There is no fact-checking of the content in YouTube videos, like there is (some degree of) fact-checking at a reputable newspaper, for example. --Teratornis 07:06, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

However, in a case where an otherwise reliable source is uploaded onto Youtube, you could use it in a {{cite}} template for courtesy. I couldn't find any appropriate examples, though. WilyD 15:52, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Uploading Images

The question is probably a new question, not necessarily related to the previous question, so I added a section heading for it. The question is ambiguous, but one way to make sense of it is to assume the referent of "it" in "its" (which should actually be "it's") is fetus. If that's what "it" is, then there are some options:

• Wait until the fetus becomes a child (see: childbirth) and then read the birth certificate, although in some cases a sex test may be necessary
• Baby Gender Mentor
• Medical ultrasonography

Hopefully, regardless of what gender "it" turns out to be, "it" will grow up in a society where everyone knows how to look stuff up on Wikipedia. --Teratornis 06:41, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Interwiki doc page pattern usage

I'm trying to get this template to do anything useful on enwikt, and failing. I expect it to generate a reference to Template:Template doc page transcluded in <includeonly> tags someplace, but I don't see it when I try it over there. When I try it over here, it works as advertised (minus issues for being used off a template under a user page), but I still can't see where the reference to Template doc page transcluded is, so that I can fix it over on enwikt. I'm lost, I cannot find how to upload a file onto a website or instructions on what I am actually doing. I am doing this for my course content.PJ elearn

Try the "Upload file" link on the left menu. It will display this page. You should provide license and general information about your contribution (for instance, you may use the template of User:Rjgodoy#How to upload an image). However, remind that wikipedia is an encyclopedia: if your intention is to upload course content, I would suggest you trying wikiversity. Rjgodoy 07:27, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Citations

Hi, I've been having some difficulty with the references in this article: Wind power in the European Union. In particular, numbers 1, 2, 3, 12 and 15 haven't come out properly in the References list. Would be grateful for any assistance. -- Johnfos 12:21, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Just fixed it. The URL for the first three was kind of odd--wikipedia just didn't seem to be handling it right. To fix the problem, I just linked to the PDF news release at the same site that said the same thing. For the last two, there was a return in the middle of the title, which was screwing things up. javascript monobook

Hi, I'm not sure if this is the right place for this, nor am I sure that Wikipedia is even the right website for this question, but I was hoping hat someone could point me in the right direction as to how to do this. I'm looking to add links to each entry in the new users log using a javascript command. I want to make two links show up, after that I can code the rest. I am pretty new to uploading images.

A previous image I uploaded was deleted. But this time when I uploaded I read a bit about it before trying. I have uploaded the image at Image:Uzhaippali.gif. adding an image

I am attempting to add an image to a page that I recently created, but when I do this,the picture takes up the entire page. How can I resolve this or how do I make the image smaller?Louwanda 16:52, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

You can make the image smaller by designating that it be displayed as a thumbnail. Write: [[Image:imagename.jpg|thumb|right|200px|Caption.]]. Set imagename.jpg as the name of your image, and you can specify the width in the number of pixels (e.g. 200px). If you want the image to be displayed on the left side of the page, change "right" to "left". Calliopejen1 17:05, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

Changing an Articles Name

OK guys. How do I change the overall name of an article? See it's like this: the article "Learning to Lie" is about a German Movie. The Movie is called "Liegen Lernen" in German, and I think that because there is no translation of this movie the article should be called like the movie was originally released. Pronunciation

Dear Help Desk:

I like Wikipedia and use it a lot, but often wind up having to drag out my dictionary anyway because entries generally lack pronunciation indications. I see in your stylebook that phonetic spelling is "deprecated" and that you encourage IPA spelling, which I assume most people like myself find confusing, difficult to resolve visually, for older folks anyway, and just sort of annoyingly effete. I wish you would re-think your "deprecation" of phonetic spelling; I suspect that's the reason people don't bother with providing pronunciation with entries, not wanting to deal with IPA and not quite understanding what being deprecated would involve. I wouldn't be surprised if non-native English speakers would have less trouble than you imagine understanding English phonetics, particularly if a link was available to a guide to phonetic sounds and their representation in English.

I prefer both. IPA for people who understand it, and phonetic spelling for the 95% of people to whom IPA is gobbledook and always will remain so no matter how many explanatory tables are produced and linked to. Matt 23:40, 22 April 2007 (UTC).

I would like to request help.

I am trying to edit a page on an anime. It does not include something that I feel needs to be included. I don't want to change the whole section, I just want to tack on a sentence or two. Each heading should have an [edit] link on the right side of it like all of the headings here do. Just click that for the relevant section. That will bring up a page with the text of the section in it. You can edit it like any word processor program. Just type in the sentences wherever you think it make sense. To see how it will look, click the "Show preview" button below the edit summary box. If you are satisfied, type in a descriptive edit summary (adding sentences about...), then click the Save page button. Make sure whatever you are adding meets the core content policies, namely verifiability and neutral point-of-view. Mr.Z-mantalk¢ 22:33, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

As there are million sof possible colors, there is no complete list. See List of colors for some common ones. Also see this site for more and it has a javascript applet to give codes for custom colors. Some art software has tools for this as well (I know Adobe Photoshop does, MS Paint does not). I don't know if that has anything to do with what you are asking about. As to whether you could get in trouble, you shouldn't get in trouble as long as you abide by the GFDL. svg image not displaying correctly

At List of Falkland Islands placenames there is what looks like a very good quality map of the Falklands aka Malvinas -- I'm talking about the English language version called "Falkland Islands topographic map-en.svg". The map looks absolutely fine in the article, but when I click on it to get a larger version, all I see on the image page is the blue sea. No islands, no placenames, no nothing. Is this just a problem with my browser setup? Does anyone else see the same? Anyone know what's going wrong? Matt 23:33, 22 April 2007 (UTC). (BTW, I am using IE 7)

It isn't just your browser. I'm seeing the same effect. Looking at the SVG file, it looks like there is an embedded PNG file that librsvg (the library used to render SVG files on Wikipedia) is not able to scale to display at sizes other than 350 pixels. It might be worthwhile to contact the author, commons:User:Sting, although I'm not sure what can be done to make this work with librsvg. Mike Dillon 23:46, 22 April 2007 (UTC)

I just opened the image with rsvg-view on my local machine and it didn't seem to have any issues. I'm not sure what's actually breaking with the version of librsvg installed on the servers. I'm running librsvg 2.14.4 locally. Mike Dillon 23:52, 22 April 2007 (UTC)
