Sorry I have caused issues, but I am new and learning how to link. I tried to reach the administrator that sent me a message today about a new page called Eco-Logo I started this morning. I could not figure how how to reach him/her.


I found the name Terrachoice when I went through the Environmental Choice website independant of Wikipedia.. Then about an hour ago I found this red link on wikipedia for Terrachoice. So I thought I would expand. I just spent 1 hour reviewing terrachoice webpage to learn what they do..etc.

So I am Not sure how to continue with new pages or links for subjects started long before I joined wikipedia. I live in Canada and am interested in Environmental issues, so I am trying to work on subject of Eco-logos found on products such as Dow Chemical Canada Inc. and Weyerhaeuser Company Limited which are worldwide firms that use this logo along with Govt of Canada crown corporations such as Ontario Power Generation Pickering Wind GS. They all promote this logo used by Environmental Choice (Canada which terrachoice appears to run... They somehow manage this program I believe like. Green Seal (USA) Eco Mark (Japan) Ecolabel (EU - used by the United Kingdom and Italy) NF Environnement (France) Blue Angel (Germany) according to this site from the Govt of Canada http://www.ns.ec.gc.ca/g7/eco2.html

Where was that help desk for copyright questions again? Just to make sure: Is such an image copyrighted? If not for the "image" part, then probably for the text? Just wondering. If that's your answer, could you please tell me what you mean? I don't trust anyone to have a copyright just because he claims so. The net's full with people claiming copyrights they don't have. In some countries, copyright can never be transfered; in others, there are severe restrictions. Owning an image and selling it at ebay is not automatically grounds for owning the copyright as well. In fact, vendors of images (e.g., posters) commonly do not own the copyright to them. Second, copy right is only granted on the basis of copyright laws, not on the basis of someone's claim to it. (As a matter of fact, if someone falsely claims a copyright, this may even be considered illegal.) Copyright laws obviously differ largely between countries. Most countries, however, have some rule about the threshold of originality. I am not familiar with the scope of the US interpretation of the threshold of originality and don't know whether it applies to a written piece of paper. Third, there is a fair use doctrine in the US which is used at Wikipedia. [reply]

How to determine a shared IP address[edit]

Shared IPs are an important consideration when interacting with anonymous editors. I've not found good instructions on how to research the shared status of a given IP address. This information should be available from wikipedia documentation, as well as linked from templates such as {{SharedIP}}. Have I missed a nice description of this somewhere? Identifying authors[edit]

Why was my entry deleted?[edit]

I added a company called Rocket Science to the Rocket Science home page. Why was this entry deleted? Do I no longer have editing rights? My user name is kezzafazza, and I understand why I was first deleted as I included a web address, but I then removed this and typed in one re: the company. I think including this company name is the same as a film or band etc? Please can you give me an explanation. Yes, it's unclear. I'll make a guess: Are you saying you found an article in Wikipedia, and you would like to see the place it covers in Google Earth? (If not, please restate your question.) If so, please look for a link labeled either "Coordinates" (in the upper-right corner of the page, or else in an External Links section) or "Maps and aerial photos" (in an External Links section). I've been contributing to wikipedia for 2 1/2 years, but suddenly wikipedia doesn't recognise my password when I try to login. Assuming you just used the standard barnstar, Image:Original Barnstar.png, and the above linked Chicago flag, you could really use anything you want (except copyrighted). Commons image link[edit]

It seems that the upload file command does not want me to upload a file from commons. If I want to add http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/c0/Downtown_Chicago_Illinois_Nov05_img_2615.jpg to Old Chicago Water Tower District can I do that without uploading it to WP? Example image!
If the image exists on Commons, you can use the image just as you would one on Wikipedia, assuming there isn't one on Wikipedia with the same name. For example: [[Image:Om-mani-padme-hum-mantra.svg|thumb|right|Example image!]] produces the image at right, although it only exists on Commons. I hope that helps. Creation of new redirect for spellong mistake[edit]

What is the policy concerning creating a page that redirects from a spelling mistake? In this case, Huntingdons to redirect to Huntingtons - Tiswas(t) 15:37, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

For common spelling mistakes (Niagra Falls → Niagara Falls), as well as capitalization (ebay → eBay) and punctuation errors (Will and Grace → Will & Grace), it's encouraged to set up redirects for these pages. Redirects take up virtually no memory, and make the encyclopedia easier to use for most. See WP:R for more info. tiZom(2¢) 15:48, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Uploading images[edit]

I have added to the 'Saltire' entry and have gotten as far as uploading the image (with all the requisite copyright and permissions addressed). The image seems to be uploaded to 'someplace' but hasn't populated into the 'Saltire' entry. What am I doing wrong? ThistleCEO

Renominating Articles for Deletion[edit]

I don't know, but did you try all the links under User:John Broughton/Editor's Index to Wikipedia#Del? If the article you are thinking about isn't there, you could add a link to the Editor's Index to it, if you should find it by other means. You can also try searching Wikipedia with Google for the keywords: afd renominate month. Spoiler tags[edit]

User:David Gerard has been removing spoiler tags from such articles as Star Wars, My Fair Lady, etc. etc. because they are not recent. Is this a new Wikipedia policy or is he unilaterally imposing his own views? Clarityfiend 18:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • That does not sound a good argument. If you haven't seen it, then the age is irrelevant. There is a tag in Don Quixote (1605) after all. Someone else also seems to have removed it from A Clockwork Orange on the grounds that it is "patronising - of course a 'plot summary' will tell people the plot". Unfortunately, I don't know how to deal with situations like this. Is there an appropriate warning, or does one just debate article by article? Notinasnaid 18:30, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    (e/c) Try Wikipedia:Spoiler warning which doesn't help much in this situation. I mean does Romeo and Juliet or the biblical Book of Ruth need a "spoiler" tag? I doubt a policy to specify would really get wide consensus. Some people object to all such tags, saying they violate Wikipedia:No disclaimer templates. I don't know about on-wiki discussion, but there appears to have been some conversation on the en-wiki mailing list. Ah, things become clearer. A guidline relating to the 'spoiler' tag is proposed for deletion at Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion/Wikipedia:Spoiler warning. It may be that some editors believe that (a) the result is a foregone conclusion and (b) that deleting the guideline will lead to the deletion of the tag and (c) that they might as well start before the conclusion of the debate. Wiki syntax question[edit]

Hi. I'm editing a table, and I have the following problem. I want to tell the software that if it wants to break a hyphenated word at a certain point, it can. This is almost what <br> does, except that it forces a line break, which is not what I want, since the line can have varying widths based on the size of the browser's window. Replacing redirect with disambiguation[edit]

Years ago, I saw a radio station's format as "adult alternative". Today we would call this "smooth jazz", but I thought it would be useful to put this information on Wikipedia, if I could actually find the definite source for this. If page A redirects you to page B, and you want to edit page A, then (1) go to A, which redirects to B, (2) find the "(Redirected from ...)" link at the top of the page, and (3) click on it, and edit as usual. --Tugbug 18:49, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Question about citing[edit]

Eventually, I'm going to create an article that will have a couple books as the primary source where a vast majority of the information will come from. Now these books themselves are heavily cited, so my question is when citing from this book, do I cite the book or should I cite where the book got the information? Also, how does Wikipedia prefer citations that are heavily drawn from a single source? I know how to reuse the same citation (<ref name="A"/>) but if I'm pulling many references from one or two books, should I instead also list the page number where it came from? You can use {{cite book}} to format such a citation in a standard way, if you like. Don't use "ibid", please see WP:FOOTNOTE for how to format in footnote style. it is probably best to cite the book you actually used, but you can cite Book A (Quoting Source B) or the like. Absolutely the same way you would use images on Wikipedia. The wiki will first search itself to see if an image exists with the name you specified and if it doesn't, it will then search the Commons to see if it exists. There is no difference.↔NMajdan•talk 20:57, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions, and will try to answer any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that's what this Help Desk is for). Article page not displaying everything seen in the edit field[edit]

I made some changes to the article named 'Finings' and they can now be seen by all.

But many of my additions and some of the previous text is no longer visible in the article page. However, I can still see all of the article in the edit field when I click on 'Show preview'. Even if I click 'Save page' there is nothing more visible on the article page.

According to the edit history of Finings, you have never edited that article. There are a couple of reason this may have happened. Sometimes editors think they clicked save page, when they really clicked show preview. What I think is more likely is that when you clicked save page, it either took you to a show preview screen anyway (which sometimes happens) or the database was locked and you didn't notice the text at the top sayiong your changes could not be saved. Unfortunately, whatever the reason, unless you saved the changes in some manner they are gone. Well, fortunately I did happen to save the complete contents of the editing field to a Notepad file on my PC. Everything is there. I was originally using Mozilla, but just now I switched to IE7 and I see the same problem with it immediately. Then I copy the contents of the Notepad file into the editng field of the article (via IE7) and then click 'Show preview'... same darn thing :-(--Zymatik 22:23, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Your problem was unclosed reference tags. A reference starts with <ref> and ends with </ref>. If </ref> is missing then the software thinks everything after the reference start is part of the reference. See also Wikipedia:Footnotes. PrimeHunter 00:40, 16 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Secret checkuser function[edit]

Please explain the secret checkuser function. An administrator said..."Checkuser confirmation. Username fits with the MO of that particular banned user."
Question: Couldn't find that user's name on this checkuser (link given). I'm not disputing your judgement. Perhaps your detective skills are superior than most? (not being sarcastic)
Response: I've sadly been dealing with this problem user for the past 6 months now. I know what I'm looking for when this one's active or has been active. And not all checkuser results are published on site.
Question: Tell me more! I'm not so interested in ----(editor's name). How does one submit a request to the secret checkuser?

There is no "secret checkuser" group as far as I know. Checkuser is a specific ability on Wikipedia and a set number have the ability to run checkuser requests, and they are not secret (as far as I know). What Ryulong is talking about is that the full report doesn't have to be disclosed on WP:RFCU always. Sometimes, on WP:AN/I, I see checkusers running quick checks on suspected sockpuppet requests. Please read WP:CHECKUSER carefully. You can't request a secret checkuser just because you're interested in someone's identity. Unless they are clearly violating policy with their actions or you have evidence to suspect them of using socks, revealing their IPs, whereabouts or other information is likely a violation of m:Privacy policy. Help creating a Infobox Template[edit]

Perhaps {{Infobox Automobile}} could have extra parameters added in order to allow it to serve this function as well? It would seem (to me) to be more sensible to expand the capabilities of one infobox, rather than creating another. Hello everyone. I am need of assistance yet again. I would like some other users who are less scared of external sites than I am to review these two sites for inclusion.
