numbers keep changing[edit]

why do my numbers that i sign with keep changing all the time?--172.164.189.245 (talk) 00:31, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

like this 172.132.238.44 (talk) 00:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC) what's going on?--172.132.238.44 (talk) 00:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You must have a dynamic IP address. If you create an account then you get a fixed username of your choice and many other benefits. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:40, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)You are connecting to the internet through a system which periodically changes the IP address with which you accessing the internet. I can be no more specific than that as I am not particularly knowledgeable in such areas, I do know, however, that the best way to resolve the issue is to register an account. See further information at WP:REGISTER. SorryGuy  Talk  00:45, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Specifically, you are connecting through AOL, which I believe gives you a different IP whenever you do anything. Algebraist 10:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Template:Triple image[edit]

At Tyrone_Wheatley#Oakland_Raiders, the {{triple image}} template is suddenly not working after working for several days. I am not sure what is going on because the same template is working fine on another article at Prairie Avenue.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:00, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Note: From my end (Safari 3.0.4 on Mac OS X) the triple image is not working on Prairie Avenue (or anywhere else) either. --omtay38 01:11, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Looking at the template page and the code on the article, the template doesn't require the 'px' of e.g. 54px. Removing that should fix it. Foxhill (talk) 01:13, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed the problem at least, removing the "px" from the template (just leaving the numbers) seems to fix the problem. --omtay38 01:15, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Was the template changed recently. I thought it accepted either format. It seemed to be working yesterday.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 01:17, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The template history shows it hasn't been edited since the 3 creation edits in mid-december (apart from one cat-add edit during this convo), the earliest diff shows that px was always autofilled in so was never required in the size field. It's only dependency - {{!}} has also not been edited since March 2007. What may have happened is that it was interpreted incorrectly by the wiki software up until now and that a recent edit to the source code fixed it (possibly). Foxhill (talk) 01:30, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Major overhaul of source-code probably caused it: meta:Migration to the new preprocessor --omtay38 01:35, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever the edits are the template works differently as it now has an internal wrap that no longer requires manual line breaks.--TonyTheTiger (t/c/bio/WP:CHICAGO/WP:LOTD) 19:07, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My edit work does not show up to other users/other computers[edit]

Dear Wikipedia/Wikipedians,

Hello there, I am a new Wikipedia user and have recently edited the page TTDI. Initially, my edits showed up in that page but subsequently when I made further changes under the section "Places of Interests", I realised that these changes do not show up in other public computers or in my other internet browser. It is only when I click on "edit this page" or "history" and revert back to the article then the changes will be shown. The changes are also shown when I log in with my username and password. However, when I clear the cookies in the browser and search for that article again, the same thing happens i.e. no changes at all.

Therefore, I am wondering if I didn't get anything right or if i violated any laws.

Many Thanks and Kind Regards.

P.S. I have consulted with "Chris the Speller"(really nice guy) on this matter but he seems puzzled and asked me to hit refresh on the new public computers. I have tried that but to no avail. He also sent me some links on editing and being a new user.I have gone through that a couple of times and quite understand how the basic editing works but still require help on this matter. Kazuya369 (talk) 01:49, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I don't fully understand the problem you described, but I find that WP:PURGE very often corrects situations such as these. Try typing "?action=purge" at the end of the web address (for example http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wikipedia:Help_desk?action=purge), and tell us if the problem persists.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 01:52, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Is there a problem other than these references not showing up? You need a <references/> element for that. --teb728 t c 02:29, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I looked in the page history and didn't find any examples of people reverting your changes, though I didn't look at everything in detail. If people do revert your changes, you can discuss it with them on the article talk page, which is here. Could you give an example of something that's not showing up? Sometimes a newly edited version of a page doesn't show up for a few minutes because the Wikimedia computers are being slow. If that's not the problem, you can try bypassing your browser's cache. I added a <references/> section to the article, but it doesn't look good, because it just says "TM3" and doesn't say what it means. If you put in "TM3", please put in something to make it meaningful; I don't understand it. --Coppertwig (talk) 02:43, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Dear all, thanks so much for your super-efficient kind assistance. You guys are AWESOME and it's not wonder to me now why Wikipedia is the best source for info on the internet.

I have tried the method which "The Fat Man Who Never Came Back" i.e. WP:PURGE and it works wonders. From my beginner's or basic understanding, i think this matter came up due to Wikipedia routing the original page(in abbreviations) to it's full name(in a different page. Therefore, maybe the changes wasn't linked yet to the main page but with WP PURGE, it's resolved now. Thanks so much once again guys! Kazuya369 (talk) 21:23, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Offsets in user contributions/logs[edit]

Can anyone give me a crash course in how to work these, or a page from which I can learn? Thanks much. seresin || wasn't he just...? 03:56, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In for example http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Special:Contributions&offset=20080116045614&target=Seresin, the first 12 digits is YYYYMMDDhhmm (year, month, day, hour, minute) of the most recent displayed item in UTC (Wikipedia standard) time. I don't know the last 2 digits. When constructing an offset, you can omit digits from the right. PrimeHunter (talk) 05:08, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why thank you. Where did you find this information, for future reference? seresin || wasn't he just...? 05:23, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I worked it out on my own. I haven't seen an explanation. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:20, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

creating a page[edit]

PLEASE HELP!!! This site is driving me NUTS!

I am trying to create and ENTIRELY NEW ENTRY for the known artist Josh M Rosenthal (who shares the same name with many other Josh Rosenthals).

I began by running a search, of which no pages came up, excepting a page that had been deleted and looked like it was a personal page.

HOWEVER the work I did, the research and all articles, and entries I referenced by way of link to the original source.

NOW I HAVE A SCHEDULED FOR DELETION on the page?????????????

THis is crazy. So I tried to use the re-direct feature to develop a unique page Josh M Rosenthal, (to avoid the issue of someone thinking this new entry was simply an edit to the previous deleted Josh Rosenthal.

PLEASE ADVISE !!!

The artist is Josh Rosenthal, and we are trying to set up a new page for this artist.

It will include his family history, his works and his acting credits which are ALL PUBLIC DOMAIN having been exhibited, published and broadcast both nationally and internationally. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Joshrosenthal (talkcontribs) 08:12, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

May I ask if you are the Josh M Rosenthal in question? If so it sounds to me you might like to read WP:COI. - MrsBucket (talk) 13:02, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
You say in [1] that you are the subject. Creating an autobiography is strongly discouraged. Also see Wikipedia:Notability (people), Wikipedia:Verifiability, Wikipedia:Biographies of living persons. The current article is far from satisfying Wikipedia policies and guidelines. Redirecting to a non-existent article [2] doesn't make sense so it was correctly reverted. It doesn't matter that there was once an article about another Josh Rosenthal. Has anybody claimed this is a problem? If the subject is better known as Josh M Rosenthal then the article could be moved to that name, but there is only a single (unrelated) Google hit on the name [3]. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:25, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I have added two external links which may help the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:52, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

What happens if there is an equal number of supports and opposes for an RfA? 144.131.176.126 (talk) 09:13, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

It does not pass. The general discretion limit is 75% (3/4 support, 1/4 oppose) - any less than that and it will not succeed. 90.194.244.64 (talk) 11:11, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The closing bureaucrat decides. The limit is not absolutely fixed. See Wikipedia:Guide to requests for adminship#If you disagree with consensus. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:57, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Crazy psychiatrist is considering contributing to Wikipedia[edit]

Wiki probably doesn't want to talk to me since I have spent a lot of time following links to doj.gov which is the federal department of Justice's website and making comments about the ballistics and efficacy of various military weapons. I would like to apologize, but since I don't ever believe anyone who apologizes to me, I will skip that. Anyway, my ex screenname here was chaingun, which is a particularly lethal type of rapid fire automatic weapon, formerly known as a mini-gun. But that is all in the past now, I have been reborn, trial by fire and all of that. I happen to know a great deal about shamanism, psychopharmacology, pharmacognosy (the study of the medicinal properties of plants and a great deal of other subjects which might be of interest to your readers. I also told the founder, whose name I forget that I would send him a check in partial compensation for being an intermittent asshole, which I intend to make good on, the check that is. What I don't know much about is online flirtations. I am very much struck by the author of your lead author on shamanism and psychopharmacology, who is an information technology and privacy (ironic I know) specialist in British Columbia. If you could give me some pointers on how to get her email address so that I might send a polite letter of admiration, I would not only appreciate it, but would promise to behave, send the check, forget about military hardware and the DOJ and whatever other form of abasement you might desire. In spite of the foregoing, you should bear in mind that my knowledge of shamanism is not purely theoretical. I am the author of a book entitled "Fire in the Head" which deals with the topics I intend to expound upon. The book was obviously published under a pseudonym, but in spite of that led to the loss of my medical license and my discharge from the special forces, specifically the 82nd airborne ranger division, formerly the 75th ranger regiment during Vietnam (another error in the Wiki).

Well, what the hell, I have an incoming phone call. People call at all hours around here.

Starting a new page on a topic that already has the same title (but a different subject)[edit]

I want to create a new article about a famous American spiritual teacher who died in 1973 but was very influential. There is already a wikepedia article with his name (Swami Rudrananda), but that article refers to a completely different person (from Indonesia) who shared the same name. Do I write my article about this Amercian teacher as an edit on the same page as the other person with the same name, or is there a way to start another page with the same title? Randybakermd (talk) 13:09, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You need to disambiguate. You need to create the article at Swami Rudrananda (spiritual teacher) or other appropriate disambiguation. You can then leave a WP:Hatnote on the other page. Woody (talk) 13:24, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You can easily print the article about Egypt by clicking on this link [4] for the printable version. Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a travel guide, so you are unlikely to find travel tips in that article. Nevertheless, Egypt is considered a good article and should contain many interesting facts and images relating to the country. Alerts to national bias?[edit]

Can someone please advise me as to whether there is an accepted means of alerting readers/editors to bias based on nationality? I have looked but have found nothing as yet.

I raise the question because of the many cases I've struck of, in particular, American bias in subject histories, etc. This distortion is understandable given the large number of Americans using Wikipedia, and my query isn't meant to be insulting.

Rather, is there a simple way of flagging this common problem and of encouraging qualified persons to try to remedy it? (I am seldom qualified to do so myself.) To be sure, the majority of content will seldom achieve a kind of global perfection, but I'm sure we could work at improving the current situation. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Michael Corey (talkcontribs) 16:22, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We have quite a few templates for tagging articles that appear biased. We have Template:Unbalanced and Template:POV. Perhaps most relevant here is the Template:Globalize/USA which you can add to the top of any article. Additional useful templates can be found here. You may also want to raise the issue on the article's talk page or bring it to the attention of an active project. For example, if you read an article about wine and found the content to be biased or inaccurate but were unsure how to fix the problem yourself, I'm sure the good people from WikiProject Wine would help you out, if you left them a message.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 17:04, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

zzuuzz has fixed the article. It's now short and neutral. I've added it to my watchlist. If you ever see stuff like that in the article again, I suggest you click "history" at the top of the article, find the most recent older version of the article that looks OK, then revert to that version. You can view each of the older versions by clicking on the date-time of that version in the list. You can revert by viewing the older version, clicking "edit this page" at the top, (and it will warn you that you're editing an older version), then click "save page" at the bottom. --Coppertwig (talk) 21:59, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

No, you necessarily don't want to go to AIV, except in very specific cases. AIV is not for content disputes but only for clear-cut vandalism, for which the vandal has been warned repeatedly. Instead, I would try writing a note on the user's talk page asking why the information is being removed. It's possible the user believes he/she has good reason for its removal (e.g. reasons relating to our policies on Biographies of living persons. Or it could be the user is unfamiliar with our policies of WP:NPOV and WP:V. Perhaps you should inform the user about these policies. If the user will not engage in discussion but continues to remove well-sourced information, don't revert war-but bring the the concerns to the attention of the community using the three-revert rule noticeboard or even the incidents noticeboard. Someone will help you out.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 18:06, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I looked into the dispute you were having. This was not vandalism, but a content dispute involving just two people. The easiest thing to do, if discussion with the other party fails (in this case, it does not appear that you attempted to speak to the other party, though he/she attempted did attempt to discuss it with you), is seek a third opinion. I have provided that third opinion here[5]. Let me know if this helps.--The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 18:29, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

We have a guideline about the notability of bands that discusses what sorts of band articles you're allowed to create. Have a look at it, and let us know if you have any questions. --The Fat Man Who Never Came Back (talk) 18:43, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It appears the official name is Guns 'n' Oatcakes. I haven't found any attempt to make an article about it. See Wikipedia:Conflict of interest. PrimeHunter (talk) 19:37, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I think from the wording of the question that the OP has been discouraged from creating an article by this line in the text when you attempt to create a new page; Wikipedia is not an advertising service. Promotional articles about yourself, your friends, your company or products, or articles created as part of a marketing or promotional campaign, will be deleted in accordance with our deletion policies. For more information, please see Wikipedia:Spam. If you think, after reading WP:BAND, that this does not apply to your proposed article, then you can ignore the message and go ahead with the article. Page history[edit]

I wanted to know when the page of Washington Irving was posted because i need the information for MLA format. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.194.189.237 (talk) 19:19, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

You may be interested in checking out this page. An easy citation guideline is available by clicking "cite this page" on the left hand side of any article (in the "toolbox" panel). Hope this helps! --omtay38 19:22, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
If you look at the top of the Washington Irving page, you will see a tab called "history". If you click on this you will see who made edits to the page and when. If you want a permanent link to a page, you can click on "cite this page" in the sidebar on the left of a page. For more information see Help:Page history. I guess you mean http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light. Click the "history" tab at top to see contributors. If you want the information in order to cite the article then see Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia, and click "Cite this page" in the toolbox to the left of the article. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:09, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
The article on light has been edited thousand of times, with dozens, perhaps hundreds of contributors. You can see a complete list by browsing through the page history. Gentgeen (talk) 20:10, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Two articles about Johnny Cooper, how can I get people to find the living Johnny Cooper[edit]

Hi,

I need help to figure out how to help people find the article on Johnny Cooper (Musician, Singer, and Songwriter).

When I search using Johnny Cooper, the article about Johnathon "Johnny" Cooper (fictional character) pops up.

I thought it might have to do with the redirect but at lost on how to help find the various Johnny Cooper as I know there are at least two muscians with the name John or Johnny Cooper on wiki.

Thank you —Preceding unsigned comment added by Sharonbrain (talkcontribs) 20:20, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I added a {{for}} template to the page, you can try that next time! WEBURIEDOURSECRETSINTHEGARDENplay it cool. 20:33, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
User WBOSITG has just created a disambiguation page at Johnny Cooper. That should help people find the page they're looking for. --Coppertwig (talk) 21:28, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Reduce Image Size[edit]

Hello I would like to reduce the image width on the logo in these two pages as they are currently quite distorted:

Wellington Zoo Kelly Tarlton's Underwater World

Thank you in advaceZoophilia (talk) 20:44, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

On the template page (Template:Infobox zoo) it says you can add the logo size. Add this:
|logo_width =
to the bit at the top of the page to add a size. WEBURIEDOURSECRETSINTHEGARDENplay it cool. 20:48, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Martin Garbus Website[edit]

re: Martin Garbus website

To whom it may concern: My website was flagged because the neutrality was in dispute. We have revised the content. We would appreciate it if the person who applied this flag please review our site and remove the flag. How do I contact the person who flagged my reference? We want this resolved immediately. Also there was a flag for grammer but there is nothing wrong with the grammer. There is no violation of any copyright facts. Thank you in advance for your help. —Preceding unsigned comment added by Martingarbus (talkcontribs) 21:09, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Maybe by "website" you mean the page Martin Garbus, and by "flagged" maybe you mean the neutrality and grammar tags. A quick look at the page tells me that the section headings need to be changed to mostly-lowercase according to Wikipedia's manual of style. I read a little of the page and it does not seem to me to have a neutral tone -- I wouldn't remove the neutrality tag. It sounds too much like an advertisement for Martin Garbus. I see that your username is similar to that of the subject of the page. If you're the subject or someone closely associated with the subject, please read the conflict-of-interest guidelines. --Coppertwig (talk) 21:20, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

History of insurance[edit]

Information about the history of Insurance. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 68.122.164.236 (talk) 21:14, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you type "history of insurance" into the search box and click "go", you find that there is no page titled "History of insurance". However, there is a page called Insurance, and if you go there, it has quite a long history section in its table of contents. I hope this is helpful. Next time, the reference desk may be a better place for this kind of question. --Coppertwig (talk) 21:23, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

screenshots and copyright[edit]

I have uploaded photos I have taken myself earlier and had no problems and no comments. Now I have uploaded a couple of screenshots taken myself and I have a lot of comments from the robot. I have read so much now, but I'm not able to figure out how to do this right. I keep writing who took the photos; myself (Mosken Bergh), I have the copyrights myself. It is just screenshots taken of my own website. The information keeps being removed and finally one of the screenshots was removed also so I had to upload again. Forgot to add: Norwegianpart.jpg screenshot

I have already asked for and failed to receive feedback at Wikipedia:Image use policy.

Any advise appreciated! --{{subst:Babel-7|en-3|no|nn-2|sv-2|da-2|de-1|fr-1}} (talk) 22:29, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Mmmk, I have made the needed adjustment to the screen shot, if you could just place the URL that you got that screen shot from on the image page, that would be awesome.--KerotanLeave Me a Message Have a nice day :) 22:38, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

how do i change titles? this page should be at [i]The Bowey Rivets (band)[/i]. the title was wrong. can i fix it? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Hhityry Glewjtes Yojttj (talkcontribs) 22:34, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Well... If that article still existed you could move it to the right name. But the article was deleted because it had no assertion of importance. There are tens of thousands of bands. Not every band is worthy of mention in the encyclopedia. Please read WP:MUSIC to learn the criteria for notability of a band. Sbowers3 (talk) 23:03, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
"Bowy Rivets" and "Bowey Rivets" both have zero Google hits so if one of these is in the correct name then it seems very unlikely they qualify for an article. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:53, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a new word?[edit]

It is not a made up word, It brings up many results in google, But no one has given it a definition, I can... How would I get in the wikipedia index?

Hi I just joined as I am interested in finding out how to add a completely new word to the index? Thanks Mike —Preceding unsigned comment added by Grancer (talkcontribs) 22:50, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Do you mean a new definition, like an article? Articles for words (definitions) can be found here. WEBURIEDOURSECRETSINTHEGARDENplay it cool. 22:58, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Do you mean a word that you just made up? because if so it would fail wp:note, and not be viable for an article.--KerotanLeave Me a Message Have a nice day :) 23:00, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See also WP:NOT#Wikipedia is not a dictionary, Wikipedia:Avoid neologisms, Wikipedia:No original research. It doesn't sound suited for an article but we can only evaluate the word if we know what it is. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:42, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

how do one make these? ps this place rocks. go wiki!--Woehtopwaht3opht9p34ht034ht934 (talk) 22:59, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Just make a link which is like Category:Your category name here.--KerotanLeave Me a Message Have a nice day :) 23:01, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
See Help:Category. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:04, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Every new category should also be contained in at least one other category. You just put [[Category:Larger category]] on the category page somewhere to make it be contained in the larger category. That's all you have to put. The pages in the category will appear there automatically. --Coppertwig (talk) 00:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

Is there any possible way to have an image link to an article, rather than to the page where the image was uploaded? ~ Bella Swan 23:57, 26 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

See Help:Images and other uploaded files#Navigational maps. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:01, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Hi! Yes, you can get an image to link to an article. The code is here; {{click|link=insert page; for example, User:Bella Swan|image=imagename.imageformat|title=this is optional|width=##px|height=##px}}. For example, an image of a house linking to my userpage would look ike this; One, two, buckle my shoe.
Hope that helps! Cheers, Master of Puppets Call me MoP! 00:03, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
It helps loads, and I thank you, MoP! ~ Bella Swan 00:12, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Also, if you want to not have that line underneath, try doing this!
<imagemap>
Image:IMAGENAME
default [[LINK]]
desc none
</imagemap>
Hope that helps too! Soxred93 | talk count bot 01:42, 27 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
