Very Bizarre...[edit]

I was just browsing around, and when I opened the article on the movie "300," it was overlaid by a huge black panel. It had an English message at the top, claiming to be written by the Zodiac (killer, I assume), and then a paragraph of strange symbols following it. When I refreshed the article, the black panel was gone, and there's no evidence in the article's history page of any edit like the one I saw existing. Is this some type of sick prank? Don't worry, it was just template vandalism. I wonder how we can best educate editors on how to spot and fix template vandalism? It seems to cause confusion since it was fairly rare before the recent bunch of fools started up. Education will help it become a non-event, then the fool club can go find something else to do. A Tale of Two References[edit]

I'm in a bit of a dispute with another editor. It's over a subway service that has not served Forest Hills on weekends for a few years now due to construction. While one published source (a timetable, dated Winter 2007-2008) states that service does run to Forest Hills on weekends, there is another published source, an advisory (that has been in effect for about a year) stating the exact opposite. Both sources are from the public authority in charge of providing service, but express two completely different things. What I would like to know is:

1. Would this be a situation where one source can cancel out the other or are both to be covered equally?

2. If one is to be cancelled, which one would set the tone for the article?

Moving displaced edit command back to proper spot ?[edit]

Hi,

The articles Beryllium Vanadium Zirconium and Tin have a long box on the right that seems to have displaced the edit option for several sections. One can see the [edit]s side by side down the page after the line where the box ends. The other elements seem to have no problem with this. Could someone perhaps fix the four defective pages? This edit command appears to be a hidden one an ordinary editor cannot touch.

Adding a section to a category[edit]

Hi,

I wish to add a page to a category which has numerous sections, but only one section is relevant to the category. Is it possible to add the article to the category using the title of the section instead of the title of the article.

An example is the Lee-Enfield article, where I wish to add a particular section to a World War II category. I know you can do this as a link from an article, but what about a category list.

If not, is it possible to show different text in the category listing whilst still categorising the whole article (such as you can do for links)???

This is not possible. However, you can use WP:DEFAULTSORT to sort the article with a different key than its title. Gary King (talk) 07:42, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

There are no "authors" of article here. The users who create the article are not referred to as the "author" of them. If you think there should be an article about this person, feel free to create it! Please make sure you have plently of reliable sources, and please review WP:YFA to learn how to create it, although it is better to start by editing exsisting articles first. Alternatively, if you would like it to be created by someone else, post it at Wikipedia:Articles for creation, and it will be created by someone. As far as I can tell from a cursory Google search, he's someone who has had one book published that got reviewed by one CNN affiliate TV (or possibly radio) station, which suggests that he probably doesn't quite pass the notability guideline on biographies.

Is there a tool that does this?[edit]

I'm trying to figure out if two people who walked into a discussion have an overlapping edit history with a third user. More or less, I want to know if there's a previous relationship between them and why the two are quite so... vicious with the one. Any quick and dirty way to do this? You could probably construct a query to find their overlapping edits; see WP:EIW#Query. Or you could use {{Google wikipedia}} to search Wikipedia for pages which contain both of their user names (although Google does not find pages in the article Talk: namespace, which might be where they came to blows). If you had told us their user names, we could have tried some searches, and possibly given a real answer. Structure of articles[edit]

I have noticed Wikipedia articles have various forms of structure and was wondering what the best layout would be for a biography. Would it be recommended in strict chronological date order throughout the persons life, or broken down into sections - for example on early life, career, TV/radio, personal life, other facts etc. Personally, I prefer the section method as to me it makes more interesting reading, but is this frowned upon by Wikipedia as being too personalised ? I don't think it answers all your questions, but Wikipedia:Manual of Style (biographies) gives some information on layouts of biography articles. For examples for sectioning, you could compare some well-written biography articles, and see how they describe things. See Category:FA-Class biography articles and Wikipedia:WikiProject Biography/Recognized content#Featured articles for featured biographies - those are examples of Wikipedia's best work, which you can emulate. When you edit an article to make it comply with some policy or guideline, be informative to other editors by linking to the relevant policy or guideline page in your edit summary; for example: "Changed order of standard sections per WP:LAYOUT." Someone will tell you and its name is Google. I took part of your question and typed in in literally word for word in quotes and got quite a few of what looks like good prospects. See here. You can also read Wikipedia's Personal wiki article, and search the Help desk archive for: personal wiki to read the previous answers to this occasionally-asked question. For a general introduction, see b:Wiki Science/How to start a wiki. Be aware that "personal wiki" means a wiki that runs on your own computer and (generally) that only you can see. Watchlist Bug?[edit]

I'm guessing this may be a "known bug" in the Wikipedia software, but I thought I would ask about it.

The article Book of Mormon is on my watchlist and, according to the article history, it was edited today, but it does not show up on the watchlist as having been edited today. Talk:Book of Mormon does appear though.

I don't know the cause of this so I don't know if the list is also missing other articles. Can someone enlighten me?

I see the most recent edit was by a bot (and the one before that minor); do you have "Hide bot edits" and/or "Hide minor edits" active on your watchlist? I think that would have this effect. Bingo! The edit that I'm not seeing is a "minor, bot" edit. I did not realize (or I forgot) that by hiding those types of edits, I would not see other edits either, if the minor or bot edit is the most recent. Live and learn.

Aligning templates[edit]

This box is "float left".

I am creating a bunch of templates for commonly-used tables in the WP:WikiProject Tropical cyclones, and I have a question about them. When the templates are added to an article, sometimes I want the template to be left-aligned and sometimes I want to to be right-aligned. Is there a way to build this functionality into the template? Also, if someone could explain how to control the way in which text wraps around the template table I would be much obliged. Plasticup ^T/C 13:11, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, so I have figured out that |align="left" or |align="right" will override the template's natural alignment. But I still don't know to to control text wrapping. This box is "clear both".

You can give a style setting of "float: left" to have text wrap around a block, and use "clear: both" to make sure there is a break in the text. (ec) You could do something like the below to conditionalise it. This assumes you are using an right parameter, as is the case on your linked example above, and it uses that to get the float direction if wrapping is used. It adds a yes parameter which controls whether to wrap text or to make the sides clear. I didn't test, but it should work. :-)

When does the editing stop.[edit]

I have been researching the album "In the West" by Jimi Hendrix to clear up some puzzling discrepencies between various sources. I now have a very clear view on what the answers are and they are in conflict with the current entry on Wikipedia. When I looked at the history of this article I found that at various times the correct information had been entered, and on some occasions explanations regarding the existence of mistakes. This article seems to go back and forth between the correct and incorrect versions and I would like to know how this sort of thing can be resolved. Do you mean an edit war? If you have information that will clear up the dispute, please post it on the article's talk page. I guess you are talking about the Hendrix in the West article? Wikilinking to Categories[edit]

Say I want to show someone this hurricane rainfall templates. If I use the standard [[text]] format I will not be creating a wikilink but rather will be adding the talk page to the category. Username[edit]

There's some limited ability to "usurp" another account at Wikipedia:Changing username/Usurpations, but if both accounts have lots of edits then I think you're past the limit, sorry. I've busted an infobox[edit]

Could somebody look at American Independent Party and tell me what's wrong with the first infobox? I don't have the programmer nature, but they look identical to me save for content. --Orange Mike | Talk 19:40, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

The problem is the parameter 'party_articletitle', which is set to 'America's Independent Party'. For some reason, the only purpose of this parameter is that the colour of the horizontal lines in the infobox is taken from Template:{{{party_articletitle}}}/meta/color. You need to create {{America's Independent Party/meta/color}} with a colourcode as its sole contents. Algebraist 19:48, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Punctuation[edit]

I'm curious on why Wikipedia uses a hyphen on the title page instead of an en dash (e.g. Main Page - Wikipedia… instead of Main Page – Wikipedia…) as an en dash is the proper form of punctuation for it, also, ellipses such as "..." instead of "…" are frequently used (on the Main Page as well). I'm curious on why this is being Wikipedia uses more or less perfect grammar, if I am wrong about this please tell me so. Also, I have grasped the fact that this doesn't really matter to most of you but, as my talk page says, I am a Grammar Nazi (please reply on my talk page).

I'm thoroughly amused by a self-professed "Grammar Nazi" who turned this beautiful sentence, complete with a comma splice: I'm curious on why this is being Wikipedia uses more or less perfect grammar, if I am wrong about this please tell me so. At any rate, the use of the hyphen in the title is deliberate and the WikiMedia software goes out of its way regarding it. If you look at McCain–Feingold bill (with an en dash), you'll note that the title is still shows "McCain-Feingold" (with a hyphen). Yep, the URL is http://www.flickr.com/creativecommons/ - the "Attribution" and "Attribution-ShareAlike" (top one and bottom one) can be used on Wikipedia; click (see more) to bring up a page that includes a search bar. Note that we would prefer you uploading them to Wikimedia Commons, so all of Wikipedia's sister projects (Wikisource, Wikibooks, WikiQuote, etc.) can use it too. Problem viewing Hexapoda[edit]

When I attempt to view the article Hexapoda, my browser (Mozilla Firefox 3.0.1) freezes (i.e. the Windows Task Manager says it is "Not responding") and I am forced to shut down the browser from there. Fixed Problem seems to have occured with this edit, where this was added <div style="-moz-column-count:3; column-count:3; font-size:71%">. I've fixed the page to remove the "font-size" attribute. -- ShinmaWa^(talk) 20:51, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Gallery[edit]

Is there any way to display 8 pics in a row, instead of 4? I can only get the gallery on my user page to do four at a time, leaving a huge gap on the right.-- Seahamlass 23:07, 18 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]
