Delete an article[edit]

  • If you want an article deleted, please see WP:AFD. That gives the instructions for listing an article for deletion. note that you have to be an administrator to do the actual deletion, however.     • Post-credits scene looks to me like a violation of some things in the NOR policy. Yeah, there are scenes which come after credits, but the article cites no citations for the supposed history about which came first, the alternate names (like stinger), and stuff like that. Uploading image[edit]

A request, can anyone please upload this image of an earthquake. This image can be used in the article 1999 Chamoli earthquake. I am still not well-versed in uploading images outside Flickr. The image is present in this page. The image will be fair use and a {{Non-free historic image}} will be appropriate for use in the particular article. IP address question[edit]

If I edit an article on wikipedia it clamis my IP address will be broadcasted in public unless I create an account. Indeed. Also see Wikipedia:ACCOUNT#Benefits explained for further details. Once you create an account, your IP address will only be visible to those who can perform a checkuser function. I'm not sure whether you meant "blocked" in the sense of prevented from editing or hidden. Your IP will not be prevented from editing after you create an account; however, you probably wouldn't want to edit while logged out anyway because then your edits wouldn't be attributed to your account.

I have edited a page as it contained factual and grammatical errors, and now someone is disputing and wants to delete what I wrote as the person thinks I am the same person as the the original writer, only signing up with another username. What can I do to keep the text, as I am not the original writer, and what I have written now is correct?

Unfortunately the article is written like an advertisement, and is therefore not appropriate for inclusion. AfDs typically run for 5 days, so you could rewrite it in a neutral point of view providing secondary sources. However, as a future event it may fail WP:CRYSTAL, and therefore it might be best until the subject actually occurs. Any questions let me know. You can also userfy the article by creating a subpage of your username. For example: User:PuffinIsland/Wild Wonders of Europe. Citations for sections[edit]

An inline ref for a particular fact goes immediately after the fact, for a sentence, after the sentence and for a para, at the end of the paragraph. What should I do to reference an entire section? Putting it at the end of the section can be misconstrued as applying to just one sentence or para. I could manually add the ref to the reflist, but then it loses its connection to the relevant section. Putting it in the section title looks ugly. I have been addressing this by putting refs of this sort on their own line at the end of the section but am worried I am going to run into some sort of MOS conflict over this. Putting it at the end of the section is fine, providing that the whole section is covered by a single ref. Refs are only needed to verify the information. Ref "overkill" is generally frowned upon, so if your whole section is covered by one reference, stick to one. :) Thanks, PeterSymonds | talk 10:25, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Something fishy[edit]

It was submitted on Wikimedia Commons, and therefore the username will appear black. If you click "view it's description there" link on the Commons banner, the page will show a bluelink to the user's Commons userpage. Hope this clears it up. Best, PeterSymonds | talk 12:08, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Also see WP:FOOT and WP:EIW#Citetools. I'm using the WPCITE extension for Mozilla Firefox and it generates a {{Cite web}} template automatically by grabbing information from the Web page one wants to cite. Compared to doing it the manual way, using WPCITE is like not hitting your head with a hammer. copy-pasting "public domain" texts // or texts only with a "reference"[edit]

User:Wxidea copy-pasted several texts from "public domain" sources (White House etc.) into Wikipedia on May 22, 2007 (not sure if also on further days). The only reference was a short comment in the "edit summary" field, without providing a link to the original text and without marking the text in the article as a direct quote. Is that legally sound?

I'm a bit suspicious because the same user copy-pasted also non-free texts, only providing "references", into at least one article. I've deleted this "contribution" when I happened to find it. Or does the English Wikipedia allow that kind of copying? Just making sure...

Texts in the public domain are legally allowed to be copied (for example, Wikipedia has a lot of articles that came from the 1911 Britannica). I don't think the source has to be referenced either; Wikipedia uses the same principle. A note on the talk page describing a source might be appropriate. For future reference, you can slightly increase the chances that someone will look at the contributions of User:Wxidea by displaying a link to them (as I did just there). (Basic principle: when asking people for help, make it as easy as possible for them to help you. Other people have their own interests and motivations, so making them work a little bit harder than necessary to help you can deter some of them - perhaps those who recognize that you made it a little harder than necessary for them.) Copyright on Wikipedia is complicated; to get a solid understanding of it, a person would have to read all the links under WP:EIW#Copy (let the good times roll!). See the {{1911}} template which appears on articles that contain text from the Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition. Is Wxidea's source text really in the public domain? If the user is repeatedly copying from some particular public-domain source, perhaps someone could take an orderly approach to it by making a template similar to {{1911}}. Also see:

Copyright law does not require us to reference the public domain source of a copy. However, common sense, common courtesy, and good scholarship do demand that we reference the source. I think that we should also note it explicitly when our article contains substantial direct copying. The details of how we do this (quotation marks, footnote, template, etc.) will depend on the flow and readability of the article. EB1911 is not the only widely-used source of direct copying. We also have hundreds of articles about US Navy ships and hundreds of articles about US senators and congressmen that come from public-domain US government sources. -Arch dude (talk) 16:16, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would take issue with that approach for two reasons: first, by not including a reference to the original text, it makes it difficult to confirm that it is in the public domain, and second, even though the text passes the copyright policy here, there's no guarantee that it will not violate another Wikipedia policy, particularly WP:NPOV or WP:V. As for the second type of copying, no. All content on Wikipedia must either be freely licensed, or be justifiable under fair use. Small quotes from non-free texts may be ok, but adding a reference tag does not give you a license to copy large slabs of text, wholesale, as part of the article (as you have pointed out on Wxidea's talk page). Periods at the end of article names[edit]

I was editing the Meridian, Mississippi article to include a paragraph about Naval Air Station Meridian when I came across a problem. The link to John S. McCain, Sr. would display in neither Firefox or IE (IE Tab extension for Firefox). I've had this problem before with E. F. Young, Jr., and it was never resolved. After doing a bit of playing around, I found out that I can't open an article whose name ends in a period unless I type in "...w/index.php?title=TITLE&redirect=no". (Actually adding any parameter onto the end fixes the problem.) I'm pretty sure if I can't open the articles, someone else in the user base of millions can't either. --Dudemanfellabra (talk) 18:09, 11 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

This is an image of Miley Cyrus from Wikimedia Commons. However, its page on Wikipedia was (not surprisingly) vandalized multiple times. I blanked the page, but I do not think there is any reason for the page to exist on Wikipedia because the image is in Commons. I know you cannot use db-talk on the Wikipedia talk pages of images from Commons, but am I allowed to use a CSD tag on a Wikipedia image page for an image that is actually on Commons? how do i get article PlaySpace undeleted[edit]

 – Page was undeleted and userfied by User:DragonflySixtyseven.

i contributed the "PlaySpace" article and playspace logo.

i received notification that the logo had been orphaned, and when i looked, sure enough, the playspace article had been removed.

the deletion log shows the following

17:24, 8 May 2008 DragonflySixtyseven (Talk | contribs) deleted "PlaySpace" ‎ (much too ad-like)

I deliberately tried to avoid making it Ad-like by reducing the article to information about the company and the services they provide. i used other company pages as guidance.

the "why was my page deleted" page says if i want to have the page undeleted, i should "first contact the administrator responsible via the method explained above"

but there is no method explained above.. or below that i can find.

This is my first contribution so i'm not an expert but I thought articles were usually marked for potential deletion and then only deleted after 5 days if there have been no objections? 5 days havent passed since 8 May. (today is 11th)

can you explain how i should contact DragonflySixtyseven to request

1.  the undeletion of the article
2.  more detailed critique of particularly what s/he suggests i avoid

I suggest you speak to the deleting admin (DragonflySixtyseven (talk · contribs)) and ask him/her to undelete the page into your userspace. And see WP:EIW#Image for way more instructions. Unfortunately, the whole issue of copyright can become extremely complex on Wikipedia. For best results, the image should be one you created yourself, and you are willing to license it under the GFDL.   6. Create the article, including all your references, making sure you adhere to the Manual of Style and our article layout
  7. Be aware that Wikipedia deletes thousands of new articles for failing to adhere to our policies and guidelines. New articles by new users are at extra risk of deletion, due to new users' unfamiliarity with our rules. Consider gaining experience by editing existing articles before attempting to create new ones.

I am trying to upload a picture to http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jack_Blanchard_&_Misty_Morgan. I have uploaded pictures twice trying to get it to appear with the article. I have also tried a link to an existing photo on the Internet. Still no luck. We own all rights to the picture and offer it for Public Domain. Please advise. Thanks.

Is it talking about your password, or the CAPTCHA image that appears? If it's the former, and you confirmed an email address, then there should be an email there with a temporary password waiting for you. I am attempting to respond to Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Rush Street (Chicago) FAC feedback. When asking people for help, you should try to make it as easy as possible for them to help you. In this case, a person might have to go dredging through the FAC discussion to figure out exactly what changes you want to make to the {{infobox road}} template. If 50 people wanted to help, for example, then all 50 would have to tediously repeat all that research to figure out what you want. You can be nice to lazy people (waves hand) by showing us examples of what the template syntax looks like now, and what you want it to look like. Another possibility is to look at other infobox templates, for example in Category:Highway infobox templates and elsewhere in the category pile, and see if some other template has the features you want. Then you could point out exactly what features you want to copy from that template into {{infobox road}}. It looks like some templates in Category:Highway infobox templates are in userspace; maybe you can find some users who are tweaking these highway-related templates, and could help you. --Teratornis (talk) 08:42, 12 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]
