November 10[edit]

links to "page#section"[edit]

Resolved
 – hatnote tidied up -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 01:15, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The page on Comparison (grammar) has a subtitle "See also: Adjective#Comparison of adjectives and Comparative". The first part is of course the proper link to a section of another page, but it looks awkward. Is there a way to make that a sort of piped link, so it would read as "See also: Comparison of adjectives" in stead, but still link to the proper section? I tried to find out about that in the links section of the FAQ, but couldn't find an answer.

Coupled to that question: the syntax of such a subtitle ("{{See also|Adjective#Comparison of adjectives|Comparative}}") apparently follows some sort of shortcut rules, where can I find info on that? Doncampo (talk) 00:59, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

You can give alternative labels. The original version was:
{{also|Adjective#Comparison of adjectives|Comparative}}
the new version is
{{also|Adjective#Comparison of adjectives|l1=Comparison of adjectives|Comparative}}
- the l1 stands for label 1, i.e. an alternative label to use instead of the actual reference, for creating a piped link.
You can read information about hatnotes and Template:also for further details -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 01:15, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Indian states and their flags[edit]

I am in the throes of compiling the definitive Indian environmental website on a state-by-state basis. I would like to insert the state flag [ emblem ] of each state on a descriptive narrative of 10-40 words on active environment groups within a state and [ if possible ] use the said flag or identifying word that would connect to that respective state on Wikipedia. As far as you are aware, do I need permission from any source prior to doing so.

Your help and any suggestions most welcome. Tony Langham. Salisbury - England. <redacted e-mail address> —Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.166.229.106 (talk) 01:12, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

In response to your questions, there are two issues:
  1. Using images from Wikipedia: please read Reusing Wikipedia Images
  2. Linking to Wikipedia: I can see no reason why you can't do this. The "Reusing Wikipedia materials" Policy doesn't mention linking to Wikipedia, although it does mention directly using it on other websites.
Good luck with your 'definitive' website - that sounds like a big task! -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 01:22, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hi,

I am trying to click the Edit button for References at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chilliwack_%28band%29 but I don't see the relevant text to edit. Most of those links are broken.

Harry

My email address is: <redacted> —Preceding unsigned comment added by Musicollector (talkcontribs) 01:30, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes are found within the body of the article, not the references section. That section only contains the {{reflist}} template, which shows the footnote text. For example, if I type: <ref>Insert footnote text here</ref>, it would produce[1], and the references section would contain:
  1. ^ Insert footnote text here

Section Heading Illustation[edit]

You know how typing

== Thingamajig ==

will display a headline, then an edit box to the right, that you can click on ("edit" is in blue and square bracketed).

How do I do this, but I don't want it to show up in the table of contents. The color should be retained; ("edit"). 174.3.111.148 (talk) 01:40, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

And you can't actually click on the "[edit]" ("edit" in blue) to edit the section.174.3.111.148 (talk) 01:47, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • If you create a heading, it will automatically be included in the ToC. There are ways aroudn this, but it might be best if you tell us what article you are thinking of, and what heading(s) - then we can give specific advice. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 01:53, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict) You can make the section at a level not displayed in the TOC. See Help:Section and {{TOC limit}}. I don't know what you mean by the last sentence. Any "[edit]" link should lead to a page for editing that section. PrimeHunter (talk) 01:55, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
  • (edit conflict x3) So you want it to look exactly like the section header, but you don't want it to work? Is that right? Why not just take a screen capture and edit it with a graphics program. Or, you could play around with the <font size => tag, the text formatting tags, and the line function ---- which should produce something close to a real section header, something like:

is the closest I can get. For those that don't want to hit "edit" to see the formatting, this is what I did:

 {{col-begin}}
 {{col-break}}
 <font size = 4> Section Header </font>
 {{col-break}}
 <span style ="align:right">[<span style="color:#0000f1">edit</span>]</span>
 {{col-end}}
 ----

In my webrowser, this puts a little too much space between the section header and the long underline, but I am not sure how to get rid of THAT. --Jayron32 02:05, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes Jay, thanks that's mighty helpful. Yes, if anyone can help Jay, or have another idea, please do contribute.174.3.111.148 (talk) 02:11, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
P.S.: I also noticed the "edit"-is-in-blue-and-square-bracketed is a little to the left.174.3.111.148 (talk) 05:39, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Use heading tags:

<h2><span class="mw-headline" id="Header">Header</span></h2>

Header

If you don't need the anchor, leave out the span. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 02:37, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks for the help. That helps too, but it doesn't include the "edit"-is-in-blue-and-square-bracketed.174.3.111.148 (talk) 05:39, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

If you look at User_talk:174.3.111.148/When_to_use_tables (2.2.2), you'll see that the sections , the "edit"-is-in-blue-and-square-bracketeds are falling to the left. Why is this? Is there anyway to fix this.174.3.111.148 (talk) 06:03, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Tables[edit]

I have an idea. I could use a table:

  • Table has 2 columns; 1 row
  • Put <span style ="align:right">[<span style="color:#0000f1">edit</span>]</span> on the right column
  • Put <font size = 4>Section Header</font> in the left column

But I need the table to have no color, no borders. No formatting in other words. How do I do that?174.3.111.148 (talk) 20:48, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

LouieLouieohoh (talk) 02:04, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Your ability to upload pictures will become activated automagically once your account has aged 4 days, and you have 10 edits to your credit. As of this writing, you have more than 10 edits, and your wikibirthday is 04:22, November 8, 2009, so you will be able to upload pictures at exactly 04:22, November 12, 2009. This is an automatic "safety" feature designed to halt spamming and other abuse. There are a few other editing tools which become activated when you pass this safety limit. See WP:AUTOCONFIRMED for more info. However, please carefully read Wikipedia's image use policy at WP:IUP and also Wikipedia's policy on the use of non-free (copyright) content at WP:NFCC. Being technically able to upload pictures isn't the only requirement. Images must be properly licenced and properly used in order to be utilized at Wikipedia. --Jayron32 02:16, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Jayron, Appreciate the comments and patience. I am asking that you wave the waiting period. I have read all the details about uploading pictures and understand Wikipedia's policy on the use of non-free (copyright) content. Please see below.

In some situations, it is necessary for accounts to be exempted from this customary confirmation period. The 'confirmed' group contains the same rights as the 'autoconfirmed' group, but can be granted by administrators as necessary. See Special:Listusers/confirmed for a list of users in this group.

What do I need to do to have the data remain intact?

Hi, your edit was reverted by User:The JPS as it appeared to remove references, categories and Wiki markup from the page. Jeffrey Mall (talkcontribs) - 03:36, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, what you do not do is to simply undo the revert! What you do do is to find reliable sources of information which are independent of the subject. The removal of the information you added has nothing to do with the lack of belief in its truth - it has to do with the fact that the information is unverified. I am going to leave a message on your talk page with some advice. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 07:37, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, most, if not all, of the material added by the OP was copied verbatim from places such as this and this and was thus a vioaltion of copyright. 67.177.189.203 should read WP:COPYVIO. Deor (talk) 15:06, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Listings[edit]

How do I get my name listed in the English Photographers section? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Johnhodder (talkcontribs) 11:51, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I'm guessing you mean Category:English photographers? (Please correct me if not). Categories are used to index existing articles. Is your name John Hodder?If so, we don't currently seem to have an article about you. The first step would be to read the guidelines on notability for people at WP:BIO to see if an article would be appropriate. If you have reliable sources for a biography, then an article may be appropriate, but I would recommend against writing it yourself. Articles for creation and it's sister pages (listed at the top) have some useful information about collaboratively producing new articles (which may alleviate any perceived conflict of interest). If you're unsure about whether an article would meet our policies and guidelines, you could ask here, giving some more information. --Kateshortforbob talk 12:34, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I assume that you want to list yourself at Category:English photographers, this would require an article on you being created on wikipedia, and then that article being listed in the category. However, it is extremely inadvisable, although not forbidden, for you to create an article about yourself, as you have a serious conflict of interest. I advise you not to create the article, but wait for someone else to do so. If you don't want to do this then you should read WP:COI and WP:BIO, and then think some more on whether you really want to create the article. Alignment[edit]

How do I align non-bulleted text with bulleted text? For example:

  • A bullet point
An example or something

Continuation of bullet point

Here, how do I get "Continuation of bullet point" to align with "A bullet point"? 86.142.110.124 (talk) 12:39, 10 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Do you mean like so?
  • point 1
Comment on point 1
  • point 2
  • point 3
  • Etc
If thats what you want to do then the code is as follows:
*point 1
::Comment on point 1
*point 2
*point 3
*Etc
Or did you want to do something else? If so just ask, best wishes, SpitfireTally-ho! 12:48, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(e/c/) If I understand you want to place later text to align underneath the bullet or the bulleted text, without using a bullet again. Not sure if there's a more precise way, but it appears to me that one non-breaking spaces aligns the text directly underneath the bullet, and five aligns the text nearly underneath the text of the bullet:
  • Bullet point
An example or something

 Continuation of bullet point underneath bullet
     continuation of bullet point underneath bulleted text --Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 12:55, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks guys, I can use non-breaking spaces but it seems an ugly kludge and it also does not work if the continuation wraps across lines. For example:

  • Bullet point
An example or something

     Continuation of bullet point underneath bulleted text blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

There must be a better way? 86.142.110.124 (talk) 13:03, 10 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Hmm, I see what you mean... Well, normally I'd advise against breaking the bulleted point halfway through anway, however, if that did happen I'd probably continue the point simply using a indent, its slightly out of alignment, but its probably the closest you can get, like so:

  • Bullet point
Comment
Bullet point continued...... blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah blah

Code being:

 *Bullet point
 ::Comment
 :Bullet point continued......

Regards, SpitfireTally-ho! 13:12, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think you need to await the arrival of the more tech savvy. I bet there is a way to use some CSS code like <margin-left=>text<div> (that's not real) to get the alignment exact and which won't won't break when it wraps. Anyway, I'm curious: what do you need this for?--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:29, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Aha! Found some code:

*Bullet point
<div style="margin-left:19px">Unbulleted point that will wrap with same alignment.</div>
  • Bullet point
Unbulleted point that will wrap with same alignment.

--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 13:41, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Great, that looks to work correctly. Thanks Fuhghettaboutit! 86.142.110.124 (talk) 13:55, 10 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Anytime.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 14:25, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
This would solve the predicament but I wouldn't recommend doing it. What you're doing is explicitly defining the width of the margin as "19px" which may or may not match the default margin for bullet points in future CSS changes for wikipedia. i would recommend doing as Spitfire suggested and not splitting the bullet point. that's an opinion SIGTERMer (talk) 18:03, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Appearance of interlanguage links?[edit]

My current appearance has interlanguage (also called interwiki) links such as (Guzman College of Science and Technology) in a color that is *very* close to that of normal links (just a shade or two lighter blue.), is there anything that I can do to alter the color of interlanguage links? —Preceding unsigned comment added by Naraht (talkcontribs)

If you really needed to change the colour you could do so: Guzman College of Science and Technology which is done like so: [[:tl:Guzman College of Science and Technology|<span style="color:#002BB8;">Guzman College of Science and Technology</span>]]. However, you should not do this unless it is absolutely necessary, external/interwiki links are slightly lighter in shade so that people can see that they are external, and it is extremely inadvisable to change the colour. SpitfireTally-ho! 14:23, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
PS, However, you can change your monobook so that the links look a diffrent colour for you only, to find out how to do this see Wikipedia:Link color SpitfireTally-ho! 14:26, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Blank space in articles[edit]

I've asked this once before, quite a while ago, but since browser versions have now moved on and the problem seems the same, I'd be interested to hear the latest views.

Often I come across articles with large chunks of blank space. For example at http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Chinese_language&oldid=324132054 I see a huge blank space under "Spoken Chinese" before the main text resumes. The problem occurs because of the insertion of a graphic (here [[File:SinoTibetanTree.svg|thumb|Sino-Tibetan language family]]) which is forced to flow beneath other graphics, carrying the anchored text with it.

This greatly puzzles me. The problem is often so glaring that I don't understand how the editor who caused it could fail to notice it, or, failing that, why it is not very quickly fixed by someone else, especially in a (presumably) high-traffic article such as "Chinese language".

It makes me wonder, still, if there's some peculiarity in the way my browser works. I'm running IE 8 under Windows XP. Does everyone else see the same problem? 86.142.110.124 (talk) 14:50, 10 November 2009 (UTC).[reply]

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps. – ukexpat (talk) 17:27, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Vladislav and all of its cognates, including Lazlo, Wladyslaw, and Wenceslas, have no direct English versions. The name can either mean "He who is famous" or "He who glorifies Lada", an ancient Slavic godess. Since the name is not from the linguisitic/cultural groups of which Modern English is descended (the Germanic Languages and the Romance Languages), then there is not really an "english" version of the name. --Jayron32 05:56, 11 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
A wikipedia page (Walter_(name))) says: 'Walter is a masculine given name. It is derived from the Old High German elements "wald" - "rule" and "heri" - "army, warrior". I, as a native Czech speaker know, that the name Wladyslaw is derived from "vláda" - "rule" and "sláva" - "fame", related to "slovo" - "word". So the names shares one root while differing in the other - therefore they are different names. Btw, the question belongs elswhere - the Help Desk is not for factual questions.

I don't remember doing it in school and am trying to help my niece with her homework (yes I know that the helpdesk is not for homework, but I'm asking for a guide to help me help her do the homework not the actual answers). --Cameron Scott (talk) 19:28, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Short division, and if that doesn't work, then try the Reference Desk. Ks0stm (TCG) 19:31, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
opps - of course I wanted the reference desk - I feel a real dunce - I have a PhD and yet short division has me baffled. Numbers are hard! (has flashbacks to school). --Cameron Scott (talk) 19:34, 10 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
