phrase[edit]

Is it true that I can coin a phrase by posting it to wikipedia and putting my name as who coined the term?Kenyattam (talk) 00:29, 4 November 2009 (UTC)Kenyattam[reply]

No. Someguy1221 (talk) 00:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Nope. It'd get deleted as a neologism. --Bfigura (talk) 00:31, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Yeah, Wikipedia is not for things you just made up one day.--Unionhawk Talk E-mail Review 00:32, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Granted, if you make up a term in project space (the page is prefixed by user, user talk, Wikipedia, etc.) and multiple people begin to use the phrase and it becomes more popular, then I guess you can say you've coined a phrase. It's highly unlikely, of course, but it's possible. If you're referring to making up a phrase and posting it as an article, it would probably be speedily deleted as a blatant hoax. Might want to be more cautious of WP:BEANS for cases like this... GlassCobra 14:49, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

How do you force a single whitespace character[edit]

Resolved
 – ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢

Can't find any info on this while searching. Wiki has a tendency to strip whitespace, but this is messing up a template I'm working on. Are there any templates that will force a spacebar equivalent character to stay put? - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 03:53, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know exactly what you are talking about, but I will give it a try. Try using the code . Btilm 03:58, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Now... why didn't I think of that. nbsp! Of course! Thank you - ʄɭoʏɗiaɲ τ ¢ 04:00, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

His edit summary for this entry reads:"How do you force a single whitespace character?" I presume that is the actual question he intended to ask. I don't know how to do that BTW... Hamster Sandwich (talk) 05:24, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

articles on living persons[edit]

I am trying to put some articles on living persons. But those are getting deleted asking source or reference. I have all references published in Telugu magazines, but those are not on internet/online. I have full supporting published material on what I am trying to write. Please help how to write on Wikipedia and publish it. --Briksharma (talk) 09:54, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, and welcome to Wikipedia! You can cite references to offline sources - see Wikipedia:Citing sources and Wikipedia:Citation templates for instructions on how to do this. You may wish to start your article in your user space (see Wikipedia:Your first article) so that you have some time to work on it before subjecting it to the full scrutiny of other users by moving it to the article space. — QuantumEleven 10:20, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) I am assuming that you are not actually giving those references in the article with the information you are adding? I will leave a message on your talk page explaining how to add references. Wikipedia does not require all references to be online - just in reliable sources which are verifiable by others, even if most editors (such as myself) wouldn't be able to verify them, as they are non-English and/or not available to myself. As long as they are available somewhere (e.g. in a library in the relevant location), someone can verify that the article exists, and verifies the information given. Add Information gadget on en.wiki[edit]

On commons there is a gadget under Maintenance tools "Add Information: shows a new link "Add Information" in the sidebar on image pages that do not use a Information template." is there a corresponding en.wiki entry for the gadget to be imported via my monobook.js or another method? -Optigan13 (talk) 10:39, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There is a script called FurMe that will aid in adding the proper rationale for a file. ---— Gadget850 (Ed) talk 18:16, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
That only applies Fair use templates. I was looking for the gadget to help add the Information template to free images prior to moving to commons. -Optigan13 (talk) 19:16, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Humilation/ insecured in employment[edit]

• There are few people working since last 15 years in Nagpur Forest Departments

• To their badluck they all are working as Vanmajur (forest labour). They were recruited at the time of Ambajhari plantation started.

• After Ambajhari plantation over, some of them are deputed in different offices of Forest depts.. in Nagpur. Some of them are qualified also. They are happy with the work.

• Though they are working from last 15 years - long period of service, they are still not regularized. They don’t get also as per minimum wages act. Every year they get only alluring assurances/promises.

• If they try to put their demands to the Officers, Officers threaten them that they will be put to the original job of digging, excavating & calling them on all the 30/31 days on duty etc.

• Now most of them are near age of 40 and or above also. It seems they are being purposely and knowingly put away from the benefits of regular employee, for the interest best known to M.S.Forest Department, Nagpur.

• All these workers are living the hell life like a dog.

• After serving for a long period if these worker are put such hire & fire treat, there will not be an Unfortunate than this for them in their own country India.

• One side Congress says that take care of poor people and other side workers are exploiting by officers in a bad way. Afterall pressurizing poors, who are already gone, what we want toprove.

• We can’t give their rights but big amount can put for the expenses of Law & Court.

• This is that – Congress ka Hat –Garib ke Saath. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 61.17.92.138 (talk) 11:10, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • I suspect, based on your question, that you found one of our over 6 million articles and thought we were affiliated in some way with that subject. Please note that you are at Wikipedia, the free online encyclopedia that anyone can edit, and this page is for asking questions related to using or contributing to Wikipedia itself. Thus, we have no special knowledge about the subject of your question. You can, however, search our vast catalogue of articles by typing a subject into the search field on the upper right side of your screen. If you cannot find what you are looking for, we have a reference desk, divided into various subject areas, where asking knowledge questions is welcome. Best of luck. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 11:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Copyright or notability AfD or what??[edit]

User:HerCipri has added a lot of content to wikipedia in a fairly short space of time. I have tagged several images of artists and their paintings for being possibly unfree, see User talk:HerCipri. Recently I suggested an article Şanţul-Mare Pecica created by this user, was also copyvio but I couldn't easily find from where, another user came up with the information and it was speedy deleted. We have a number of Romanian artists added by this user. I am fairly certain that these are copyvios but there is no easy way of getting the sources. I also think that many of them might fail notability criteria.

  1. Pavel Alaszu;
  2. Dacian Andoni;
  3. Ladislau Babocsic;
  4. Maria Balea;
  5. Francisc Baraniay;
  6. Nicolae Bikfalvi;
  7. Delia Brânduşescu;
  8. Cristian elbus Buzneanu;
  9. Petru Buzgău;
  10. Liviei Cernensky;

I was tempted to add them to a joint AfD but I don't know if this is the correct approach or should I go down a rather vague copyright route? Polargeo (talk) 11:13, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

  • Personally, I'd ask at WikiProject Romania - the folks there would possibly know how notable these are, and would be better able to find Romanian references (or copyvios). -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 11:19, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
    • Also, do you know the user who found the copyvio source for Şanţul-Mare Pecica? If so, it might be an idea to ask them to look at the above articles - if you don't know, perhaps ask the deleting admin (Alexf) if they could contact the user?
Yes the user was Whpq. They found the copyvio by extensive googling but couldn't get to the link. I managed to view the link and then tagged as speedy and it was deleted. I just think this user, HerCipri, has added so much fairly obviously copied material that the best thing to do is probably to assume copyvio as I think the refs may not be available to us and could take a lot of time time to uncover for each article. I am willing to try wikiproject Romania as well Polargeo (talk) 11:32, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Okay I've left a message at WikiProject Romania, thanks Polargeo (talk) 11:50, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Go for it! Put them up at AfD, include links for relevant Delsort categories and see where it goes. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 11:52, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Citing sources[edit]

If there is a section of the artcle without a citation or source, what is the edit to show that a citation or source is needed? {Cmguy777 (talk) 16:10, 4 November 2009 (UTC)}[reply]

You can add citation needed to the end of particular sentences, or unreferenced section to the top of the section. Hope this helps, GlassCobra 16:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

CVR Energy[edit]

How do you change a title of a Wiki entry? You have the wrong company name for our company. Thank you.—Preceding unsigned comment added by CVR Energy (talkcontribs)

The official website (e.g. this page) seems to show that Coffeyville Resources Refining & Marketing, LLC is a subdivision of CVR Energy. Nowhere on the CVR Energy website does it appear to show that that division should be referred to as CVR Energy. Also, I see that the Coffeyville Resources LLC page is up for a Speedy Deletion as advertising. I also note that you have a conflict of interest. -- PhantomSteve (Contact Me, My Contribs) 18:21, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

why does the category include talk pages[edit]

Hi everybody, I'm still kind of new here. I've been working on the list of songs, mostly clean-up. Why is the "Category:Lists of songs about a city" filled with talk pages, how does one get them out?
Thanks for any and all help.Civic Cat (talk) 18:19, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

It appears you were trying to place a link to Category:Lists of songs about a city in the talk page message that you posted on several pages. With categories, to link to them without including that page in the category you put a colon in front of the word "Category" like this

:Category:Lists of songs about a city

which appears like this

Category:Lists of songs about a city

I hope that helps. James086Talk | Email 18:47, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah yes. Thank you. It must of been part of the copy and pasting I was doing. I was wondering why it didn't show up. My apologies for the mess. Now, how do I get it cleaned up?
;-)
Civic Cat (talk) 18:53, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Just add the colon to the category link all the talk pages where you added it... – ukexpat (talk) 18:56, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Hmmmmm. Isn't that to negate the effect? I want it removed, not to merely negate its effect. It seems that while it doesn't appear exactly where I put it, it does on the editting page. I've just tried to remove it from there. It seems to have worked. I will now try it with the other pages; and will report my findings.
:-)
Civic Cat (talk) 19:36, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Removing the wikicode will obviously remove the page from the category, but adding the colon leaves the category text in place, viz Category:Lists of songs about a city but does not add the page to the category, so the solution depends on what you want the end result to be. – ukexpat (talk) 19:41, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
(ec) With the way the category system works, "negating its effect" and removing it from the category are the same thing. A page is only in a category while the categorization link is actively present. It gets removed from the category as soon as the link is removed/corrected. • Anakin (talk) 19:45, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Ah there, I've fixed it; though I was informed that I might have to report my action.

I did both. By removing the link to the category--I just found out that you can, I negated both the effect of having it on the category page and littering the talk pages with the duplications I had erroneously made. In my last edit--the one before this--for a sub-list that I think is inappropriate for the category page, I put the colons in. Now if my account survives the next 30 or so minutes, perhaps the next day, I will consider it worthwhile; and you gentlemen will have much to to with it. Thank you.

Civic Cat (talk) 19:55, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Btw, can one organize categories (alphabetically, in terms of importance, and chronologically)?Civic Cat (talk) 19:58, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
You can sort alphabetically using a sort key such as , which will sort the page's entry in the category listing as "London" rather than "List of..." – ukexpat (talk) 20:07, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks again!

Attachment facility in New Section/ Editing Section or Discussion page[edit]

I want to attach some scaned pictures or diagrams along with my question but currently I can not find any attachement facility in aforementioned sections. So is it possible for Wikipedia to construct such facility for their users. Thanks 68.147.38.24 (talk) 20:09, 4 November 2009 (UTC) khattak[reply]

Wikipedia doesn't have such a feature, mainly because of copyrights. You could upload the images to Wikipedia manually but then you need an account and you still have to worry about copyrights. If you just want to post a question, it would be quicker and easier to just put them up on ImageShack or a similar host, and link to them. • Anakin (talk) 20:15, 4 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]
