Remove prod blp tag[edit]

Hello.

I recently created a page about Isai Scheinberg and it was flagged b/c I hadn't put a reference. I believe I have now added the references for the article and would like to know how to delete the prod blp tag.

Thank you. —Preceding unsigned comment added by RFKFREAK (talkcontribs) 01:10, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You didn't add any references. Please see Wikipedia:Citing sources. There is an internal link provided in the article, but other Wikipedia articles are not considered reliable sources. Someguy1221 (talk) 01:13, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
More specifically, see Wikipedia:Identifying reliable sources. This should give you a good idea of what is considered a reliable source for Wikipedia. elektrikSHOOS 07:37, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

overview of allowed sources[edit]

Asking if a source is allowed, seems to be not allowed in the talk page of an article, so i'll ask here. Is there an overview of music magazines that Wikipedia allows as source? Apparently the Legacy Magazine is not an allowed source for underground metal, but Cosmopolitan (which has close to zero to do with metal) is ok. I don't feel like digging through 100 pages contradicting wikipedia laws to find out why, so is there any list or something to choose from? I understand other websites that are not from major cooperations are banned too? 92.229.83.129 (talk) 01:15, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

There is no official list. If you'd like to attract more opinions to the question, you can post to WP:RSN (or you can use the search bar on that page to see if the magazine has been brought there before). Alternatively, you can open a request for comment on the the article's talk page. Someguy1221 (talk) 06:20, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also see the Category:Music on WikiIndex. A wiki that specializes in music probably accepts more content in its topic area than Wikipedia does, and thus takes a more relaxed approach to notability and reliability. That could be important in a relatively new and obscure musical sub-genre, which may not have been around long enough to attract attention from scholars and journalists who meet Wikipedia's standards for reliability.
  • If you find two or more manual pages on Wikipedia that contradict each other, you could discuss that on their talk pages or on the Village pump. The manuals are only as good as users like you decide to make them. What part(s) of WP:V, WP:RS, and WP:OR do you find unclear or contradictory?
    • Having an aversion to reading manuals puts an editor at a severe handicap on Wikipedia. Users who don't like to read manuals will generally create more problems for themselves and others than necessary.

Creating a template[edit]

I want to create a template that when a keyword is entered a predetermined phrase is put out. For instance, (for this example, I will use Template:ExampleExample) {{ExampleExample|1}} would give the clue "yellow" and {{ExampleExample|3}} would yield "snail". How would I go about doing something along these lines or is it possible? --Noah¢s (Talk) 01:30, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

You would use a #switch, like so:
{{#switch:{{{1}}}
| 1 = output if 1
| 2 = output if 2
| 3 = output if 3
| &c.
}}

Simply out of curiosity, how are you planning to apply this? Intelligentsock 01:47, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Trouble with using picture from Japanese Wikipedia.[edit]

Found this awesome shot (and some other pictures) of a Suzuki Fronte 7-S, but cannot figure out how to make the picture show on the English language Suzuki Fronte page. When I type it in like this: [[Image:Fronte7s.jpg]], this is the outcome:
Could I just copy the pictures in question and upload them to our commons, taking care to give credit to the original photographer etcetera? Thanks for any help,

 ⊂Mr.choppers⊃  (talk) 03:17, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

The picture is on the Japanese Wikipedia (not on either the English Wikipedia or Commons), so that's why the link will not work. However, if you transfer the picture to Commons (possibly using a tool such as CommonsHelper — for that tool the language code is ja), you should be able to use it in any Wikimedia wiki. Although the tool I mention is not perfect, it will assist you in properly attributing the original photographer. PleaseStand (talk) 03:32, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Questions about your article on the Shaker song Simple Gifts[edit]

I am not sure how your system works so I will just lay out my information and hope that it somehow gets added to the existing article. In popular use the music Simple Gifts became the introductory theme for a CBS News series. The Copland version of the melody was used as the theme music for the CBS News series of documentary specials, CBS Reports, the earliest of which (1959) were hosted by Edward R. Murrow (who was born to a Quaker family). I was very young but remember listening with my Father to the news while he explained what the stories were about. It was this that led me more than anything else to a love of reading and history and political science, and to gain a great and lasting respect for Ed. Murrow's honor and great faith in goodness of the American People. I think that this information should be added to the simple gifts article. The only source I could find that attests to this listed below:

It takes a certain amount of knowledge about policies and editing. It also takes quite a few edits. Right now, you have seven edits under your name, most of which are vandalism. So, you have your work cut out for you. Dismas|(talk) 05:20, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Improper redirection of our trade name hotel Tanjung Rhu Resort[edit]

Please note that searching for Tanjung Rhu Resort ; automatically links to Tanjung Sanctuary Langkawi.

These are two separate entities managed by different companies. Tanjung Sanctuary has hijacked the search term via a redirection. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 202.169.25.212 (talk) 08:02, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Please assume good faith. It would seem that what what actually happened was the redirect was created automatically when the article about the sanctuary (which was innocently but erroneously created under the title Tanjung Rhu Resort) was moved to the correct name. I've requested the redirect be deleted as it is misleading. AJCham 08:14, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Fast way to replace a deleted image?[edit]

NavyPres.gif has been deleted. File:US Navy Presidential Unit Citation Ribbon.png exists and can replace it, but there appears to be at least 200 articles that used the old gif. Is there a fast way to search for the gif link and replace it with the jpg? 71.234.215.133 (talk) 10:45, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

A bot maybe? Dismas|(talk) 10:55, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
There is something very weird going on. It's fixed though I don't know how. I checked the image File:NavyPres.gif and saw that articles containing it had broken displays. Since the local image was deleted in 2007, I figured this would not have come up now unless the Commons image was recently deleted. So I looked for it at Commons with copy and paste of the exact same name that was deleted here, meaning it has to have been the right name, but Commons indicated there was no image by that name, ever. So I undeleted the local image, but when I did, I saw the Commons image existed, by the same name I had just checked, so I re-deleted it locally, and suddenly, now, it seems to be working everywhere it wasn't. Back. Away. Slowly.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 11:03, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
A bot was my thought but I do not know how to make them. I did not know if an exo-program (i.e., Huggle) was set up to do such a task.
I could not read the history of the gif here on WP, and never thought to check Commons. The fact the page after page of red link "images" I was staring at now show the ribbon works for me, but I, too, shall step softly away. "I hate bugs!" 71.234.215.133 (talk) 11:18, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

CSD Tag[edit]

  • Hi, I want to know that suppose I would put a Speedy deletion tag on the article and another contributer removes the tag without providing sufficient reason, then which actions should be done?Max Viwe | Wanna chat with me? 13:59, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If the contributer who removes the tag is also the page's creator, then this is not allowed and the CSD tag should be re-added. For anyone else, I follow what's at Wikipedia:Deletion#Speedy deletion, "Renominations: Either a page fits the speedy deletion criteria or it does not. If there is a dispute over whether a page meets the criteria, the issue is typically taken to deletion discussions". You can discuss the issue with the user who removed it if you wish, but if you still think the article should be deleted, then take it to articles for deletion. --Mysdaao talk 14:49, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
If the tag was removed by an admin (often the edit summary will say something like speedy declined, or not applicable), it is usually best to take it directly to Articles for Deletion if you still believe it merits deletion. Relisting it on Speedy delete to try to get a different admin to respond differently is discouraged. Rmhermen (talk) 22:09, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

When you asked this before (see WP:Help_desk/Archives/2010_June_19#General_Aristide_Razu_.2Fpictures_are_disappearing.3F), I think the conclusion was that not even you can be sure that you hold the copyright in these old photos. Preferred method to force literal non-list interpretation of infobox data field[edit]

The behavior of Template:Infobox knot details appears to have change with regard to field data10, which is the list of ABoK reference numbers for a given knot. By convention these reference numbers are preceded by the character '#'. Previously this field was being interpretted literally, but now they are being rendered as a numbered list. Since the knot details infobox has not been changed in quite a while, I assume this resulted from a change to Template:Infobox or the wiki software itself.

In any case, I am not a wiki markup expert and would appreciate help/advice on the most appropriate way to override this behavior in this field of the knot details infobox. As an example of what has gone wrong, see the infobox on Constrictor knot. The list should read "#176, #355, #364...", not "1. 176, #355, #364...". Thanks very much! --Dfred (talk) 19:33, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify, literal may be the wrong word. Some of these lists use bold to indicate the primary entries in ABOK. Mainly what I want to avoid is being interpretted as a numbered list. Thanks. --Dfred (talk) 19:36, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
This seems to have been a deliberate change (diff) so that someone could use a bulleted list in an infobox. I suggest you add to the discussion at Template talk:Infobox#small change. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:45, 6 July 2010 (UTC)[reply]
