Changing "edited by (IP address)" to "edited by Adrian-from-london"

Hi,

I did an edit on the biofield energy healing article but didn't realise that I wasn't logged in at the time - is it possible to get the edit summary changed, or can you suggest something.

(e/c) You can use a dummy edit to attribute the past edit to yourself in the edit summary. Of course, doing this you'll be publicly revealing your IP address, which not all users would want, but if your concern is taking credit rather than any privacy issue, it's one way. We used to have the ability to reattribute revisions but not for a long time.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 01:06, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Actually the combination here of hiding the IP address with rev deletion and a dummy edit is very useful, making attribution possible without the privacy issue (well all admins and users with higher permissions would still be able to see the IP, but no one else). "Dynamic"-sorting the table at The 100 Best Books of All Time

Resolved

I would like to use template:dynamic list to sort the table in the The 100 Best Books of All Time article.
The entries under the "Author" column of that table are links to articles on authors, so are in the format "Firstname Lastname". Is there any way to make that column sort alphabetically by last name? (Maybe biography-category articles are flagged in some way that the dynamic-list template can use for that purpose, for example? Or could the template somehow "dynamically sort" that column according instead to some hidden column containing text in "Lastname, Firstname" format?) See Template:Sort For example, replace [[Albert Camus]] with {{sort|Camus, Albert|[[Albert Camus]]}}--SPhilbrickT 13:52, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

No, don't use {{sort}} as there's a better template for just this situation. Use {{sortname}} instead, so that {{sortname|Albert|Camus}} links to Albert Camus but sorts under "C", not "A". Bencherlite^Talk 13:55, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Tracking Appropriate Copyright Permissions For Satelite Images Taken Over Air Spaces

Itch a bit to see that the appropriate copyright permissions are taken for satelite images of air space reported, posted on or linked to Wikipedia articles.

Please, in specific where permissions taken or are there international ratifications that allowed the images from the following: (Domain selection for Lagos State> GeoHack-Lagos http://toolserver.org/~geohack/geohack.php?pagename=Lagos&params=6_27_11_N_3_23_45_E_type:city(7937932)_region:NG to be taken.

I have an account, but it probably is under a account address

I have an account with you, but it is probably under a different e-mail address, user name and password than I use now. You need to log in to your account, and make the changes by clicking the "preferences" item that appears in the top-of-page menu when you log in. The changes can only be made while you are logged in. --Jayron32 04:03, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

I'm not completely sure what you mean but if you don't know the pasword for an account and you cannot receive email at the address stored in the account then access to the account is lost and you have to use another account. If you know the username and password of an account then you can change the email address for that account as described by Jayron32. PrimeHunter (talk) 04:06, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Power Down Shifting

Hello, I recently read the article about powershifting and I have come up with a downshifting technique that would basically be called power down shifting. A quick eplanation of the technique would be keeping the right foot lightly on the accelerator and the clutch pedal is depressed briefly while the shift lever is shifted into a lower gear as the revolutions gradually rise to the proper rev match (in order to do this smoothly it takes lots of practice). I have researched it as best as I could and I am certain that no one has recorded any information on the subject or even heard of it. I would like to put this information on this site but i'm not sure how to go about it. Do I get an editor to help me make this article so it can be good enough to post? Is this technique of mine at all useful to the site? Does this technique have to have a purpose for it to be useful? Also out of curiousity if this gets posted, would it be established that I came up with the technique? Im really looking forward to your reply. This sounds interesting, but Wikipedia doesn't publish novel ideas. See Wikipedia:No original research. This is one of Wikipedia's central, cornerstone policies regarding article content (the other two being Wikipedia:Verifiability and Wikipedia:Neutral point of view.) What Wikipedia is for is for summarizing existing, published information from reliable sources. If no one else has ever published a summary of your technique, it really isn't appropriate for Wikipedia. --Jayron32 04:49, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

I wasn't thinking of a novel just a definition identifying that this technique exsists and should be considered like other shifting techniques such as powershifting, heel-and-toe and left foot braking. I dont understand why the idea isn't appropriate for Wikipedia. No there isn't. The use of the word "novel" above did not refer to a fictional book of considerable length, as I think you understood it. This was novel's other meaning: "something new"; a "novel concept"; from the Latin, novus, meaning new. As explained by Jayron32, Wikipedia does not publish new ideas. As an encyclopedia, we are a type of source that synthesizes previously published material. We do not include new ideas unless reliable sources have already been published on them out in the world, sources directly discussing the topic/idea/thing that is sought to be added. Uploading images - Prior's Field School

Hello. I need help with uploading 2 images please. I have taken them myself and given them a {{cc-by-sa-3.0}} tag. When I tried to upload them, there was a message saying 'the file extension doesn't match the MIME type'. I have read others' comments on this: the images I am trying to upload are of Prior's Field School and an air vent. I have uploaded these previously but, because I hadn't taken the photos myself, the tag was wrong. I have called the new files something different, even though they are shots of the same things (the school and air vent) that I originally tried to show.

Do I need to delete the old images? Can someone do this for me as I'm struggling? If the old ones are deleted, will I then be able to upload the new ones? Cghamel (talk) 11:36, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

(1) The message "the file extension doesn't match the MIME type" is nothing to do with any tagging/licensing issues. The software is comparing the last part of the file name ( ".jpg", ".doc" or whatever ) with the actual contents of the file, and thinks they are inconsistent. When you called the new files "something different", did you change the file extension?

(2) The red links on your talk page indicate that the old images have already been deleted. I would guess that you should be able to upload new photos to these names; but if that doesn't work then try different names. -- John of Reading (talk) 21:08, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

Requesting edits, meeting indifference

Here's my situation: I'm trying to work through a possible COI with a particular subject. That is the C-SPAN television network; I work part-time with their communications team. I've noticed their articles fall far short of Wikipedia's standards and, so far, I've worked with input and assistance from a few other editors to fix up the Q&A (U.S. talk show) article. (Before I started, in fact, there were duplicate entries.) Then last week, I proposed a revision to the article about C-SPAN's former program, Booknotes, and asked for help in a few places: WikiProject Television, a "request edit" tag on the article's Talk page, and I contacted two editors who had been helpful before.

Since then, I've either received no response, or a plea of being too busy. Having carefully followed the MOS, and being familiar with relevant policies and guidelines, I am very certain that my draft (here) is an improvement on the current article (here). I am almost inclined to move it into place, as it seems that obtaining a prior thumbs up in this area seems to be prohibitively difficult. Rather than any objection or concern, I seem to be meeting indifference. If someone here is willing to look at my draft and weigh in, I'd be most appreciative. And some guidance on whether I should be a little more bold, while of course disclosing my affiliation, as I look at improving other C-SPAN articles would be most appreciated. Hi there, I hope you don't mind me indenting your comment, just for ease of readibility. No offense, but I am looking for an editor with more experience than work on just the article you link here; I did have a look around, and while I don't know anything about that subject, I did notice that your first edit was to remove apparently factual, sourced (although negative) information from that article, without providing an explanation. That's rarely a good way to start, and the debate on the Talk page appears to be far too complex, not to mention far along, for me to do much good. Hope you can all come to an agreeable conclusion. The revised article you have made on Booknotes is clearly better however even from an inexperience viewpoint I think you should go ahead and add it however you could also use the edit request template to call for an admin to add it as well. Thanks, David, I have moved it now, following further discussion there. In fact I did have a "request edit" template on the Talk page for more than a week, but it seems that those requests are being processed very slowly, if at all. As to MonaVie, here is my takeaway: the phrasing itself does appear neutral to me, although the citation overkill in the intro section is troubling. Of course, those are usually an artifact of edit warring; I don't know if that's what you are involved in, but the Talk page indicates that you might be. Maybe it's time for a Wikibreak? I could use a wikibreak after the issue is resolved haha. However from what I can see the POV of the statements in that lead article are not factual and this leads to concerns about agenda pushing and slandering companies through wikipedia (although I admit that the editors involved in the article possibly have of a lack of education on the subject). I don't understand how something can be called similar to a pyramid scam and a CEO can be accused of being involved in false claims of another product unless it was at least proven guilty of this in court. The statements in the lead make it look like the company of MonaVie itself made health claims that they got in trouble over however I cant find any evidence of that in the sources. Well, a court of law is not the standard here. The standard is whether a reliable source has asserted that MonaVie made unsubstantiated health claims. Certainly seems that the FDA has said so, and newspapers like the Palm Beach Post have so reported it. It seems to be a significant part of the company's public profile—unless there is a major misunderstanding that other sources can show, some version of that language probably does belong in the lead section. There is no source that proves that MonaVie made any health claims at all that is the problem (If so what are they?). The sources refer to claims made on another website http://www.acai-berry.com/ that is not created or run by the MonaVie company.

The sources don't prove that the CEO of MonaVie was involved with the false health claims of another company either they just say that he left the company a year before the FDA shut it down. Is it not POV to say he was involved based on that evidence alone?

However even more interesting to note is that Xango was warned directly by the FDA and yet all mention of that controversy remains out of the leads statements of that article. No mention of it being similar to a pyramid scheme either. Should we not add that to other MLM company articles that they are similar to a pyramid scheme if it is acceptable in the MonaVie article? Why is there so much wiki lawyering going on to preserve this POV in this article http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MonaVie

fraudulent amalgamation of Israel/Palestine references with Israel alone

Dear Sir: There used to be a link to UN resolutions on Israel/Palestine alone; this has now been changed to be diluted with UN resolutions on Israel with all of the countries whose lands it occupies. The best place to discuss this would be on the talk page of the article where the change has been made. Your preferred version seems to rest on your personal opinion of the relative importance of certain U.N. resolutions, so you may need to be prepared to back it up with citations. Reaching consensus on issues like this involves assuming good faith on the part of other contributors, so "fraudulent" is not the most helpful way to describe their actions. We have several flag images for many countries. See for example a file search on "Flag of Ecuador" [1] where I'm currently not seeing two old flag designs in svg format. If you report a file problem then please link the file or article where you see the problem. But these intermittent image problems usually work themselves out. Velociraptor888, making the same point in 7 posts in 30 minutes when it is clear that you know that there is a problem with the servers is not the best use of your time or the help desk. What help can we give? We can't fix the servers; we can tell you it's a server problem, but you know that already; we can tell you it probably won't last, because the servers get looked after properly when there are problems, but I suspect you know that's the case anyway. SHOUTING, using bold and italics (or bold italics) and teenage comments like "Oh. My. ****ing. Problem with rating

hello,

why the ratings of an WikiProject, i.e. Santana, doesn't import the ratings that I gave automatically. But if I'm deleting in "class=stub" the "stub" i.e. and save it, and than editing this page and write again "stub" in "class=" and return to Category:Stub-Class Santana articles, they display the page there! Tracing my father

Can you tell me if Harlequins were originally a soccer football club? The reason I ask is that I remember my father saying he played football in England, with a team with called Harlequins, I am sure in and about the London area. This would probably be around the 1920/30`s. He played as the goalkeeper. If there was a Harlequin football club could you advise me who to contact? Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Image problem

New editor here, having problems with selected images on Barrington, Illinois page. Several images that previously worked now appear as broken links but look fine when clicked twice to view the original image. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks! Sueswim03 (talk) 20:22, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

See a couple of posts above -- there is apparently a problem with the server side image scaling that produces image thumbnails. I am sure it will be fixed in due course. – ukexpat (talk) 20:40, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

But you will have to link to specific diffs. I examined a bunch of the edits you posted here and saw no signs of vandalism by the editor; only signs of reverting vandalism by others. The IP might simply be misunderstanding the diff view. I remember finding it confusing when I started editing. In the diff view illustrated at Help:Diff, Angela is the person who changed the text from what's depicted on the left into what's depicted on the right. I was reverting vandalism, and I reverted those edits linked by Fuhghettaboutit, because they looked like vandalism. When starting this section, you said that you have tried to contact me three times. But somehow I haven't recieved a single message from you, if you don't count the personal attack on my talk page. If you had contacted me and corrected me that you weren't doing vandalism, I would have reverted my own edits and tried to settle things. But you didn't. Anyway, I'm sorry if I have wronged you. Article Activation

I created a new article 3 days ago, and can't find info on when or how the article will become active. I can access the article from the "My talk" folder. How and when will the article become active?

Articles aren't "activated". The article that you wrote on your talk page must be moved to its new location. I can do this for you. I will also be editing it a bit since some of the sources that you use aren't sufficient. Dismas|^(talk) 22:41, 4 November 2010 (UTC)

How to mark an article as needing examples or sample code?

If there is such a template, it should probably show up in one of these places:

• Category:Request templates (nothing obvious jumps right out from the template names, but I did not look at every template's page)
• Search Wikipedia's Template: namespace for "requested"
• Special:PrefixIndex/Template:Req
