content incorrect[edit]

Hi there

I was hoping you could help me, I am the communications manager of this organisation on this page Pharmacybrands (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

We did not load this content, and it is not factually correct. We do not know the author and when I try to change it, I get warning messages that I will be deleted as an editor.

What do I do now? I am legally the owner of information on this company, it is also a listed company on the NZ stock exchange and therefore having incorrect content is a risk to our organisation.

We do not want to use the page for advertising, we just need to update the information to be factually correct.

Can you help me?

Angerie van Wyk | National Communications Manager

Pharmacybrands — Preceding unsigned comment added by Angerie (talkcontribs) 00:55, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To begin with you should read our page about editing in areas where you have a conflict of interest, WP:Conflict of interest. Since you do have a conflict of interest your best course of action is to use the article's talk page, Talk:Pharmacybrands to explain what you believe should be changed. If you are the the copyright owner of the information you are trying to add to the article you should read, Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials and comply with the instructions there. Just so you know though, seldom is the information on a company's website appropriate for Wikipedia. If you have any further questions please ask. GB fan 01:20, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Going Live[edit]

I began a page (here) when I was a new user; the page was rejected originally (with good reason). Now I have experience and am told on my talk page that I can submit articles myself ("Note that because you are a logged-in user, you can create articles yourself, and don't have to post a request"). But when I tried to create the page again "on my own," it was blocked, of course, as the url is reserved. I have since modified the article and submitted it for re-review, but the backlog is very long! Is there a way I can delete the submission altogether to free up the URL and make the article?--Rereward (talk) 05:45, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by "reserved"? What was the exact message that you saw? Ruslik_Zero 07:39, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I see nothing at Henrik Lacaj that would prevent you from creating an article with that title. Dismas|(talk) 07:50, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Rather than submitting via Articles for creation, you can now create the article directly in mainspace. To do so, follow the redlink in Dismas' comment above, and build the page there. When you save it, the article will immediately become "live". Hope this helps clarify things for you. Yunshui  14:03, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
However, I would always advise anybody creating an article, even experienced editors, to create it in a sandbox first, and then move it to mainspace when it's ready. So I would suggest creating it in User:Rereward/Henrik Lacaj. --ColinFine (talk) 14:08, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Citation needed tags in an article[edit]

Resolved
 – -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 22:07, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

A while ago, I tagged many entries in List of conglomerates with {{Citation needed}}. Most of them are still present. Are they appropriate or is this a bit too excessive? -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 13:13, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I would lean towards excessive (it makes the page look hilarious, though...). Most if not all of the conglomerates listed have their own articles, so verifiable information about them is only one click away. WP:Source list requires that list entries meet the notability requirements, but doesn't specify that they have to be sourced on the list itself. Yunshui  13:20, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks. I removed all cn tags. -- Toshio Yamaguchi (tlkctb) 13:53, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Article for Creation, Avenue 32[edit]

I submitted an article for creation (Wikipedia:Articles for creation/AVENUE 32) on 20th July and it still hasn't been created. Is there any way to find out why it is taking so long or if I can do anything to help the process? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Violaine Muras (talkcontribs) 17:11, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

It doesn't appear as though it was ever reviewed because it was filed incorrectly. I've put up the necessary template to have it reviewed; I'd do it myself, but I don't have much time at the moment. Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 17:40, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
P.S. - The article is at Wikipedia talk:Articles for creation/AVENUE 32. Hersfold non-admin(t/a/c) 17:41, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
And now it's at Avenue 32. -- John of Reading (talk) 19:24, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

How to create a flag template?[edit]

Hi, I want to know how to create a flag template for the city. I saw the template like that in the russian version of Wikipedia. Here is a link to it.
Karlen91 (talk) 19:21, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

On the English Wikipedia, we avoid using flags in infoboxes (see WP:INFOBOXFLAG), and we don't often use flag icons for subnational entities such as cities. — Andrwsc (talk · contribs) 20:10, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

About User Pages[edit]

Hello, I didn't know where to ask this but is it appropriate for a user to create another user's user page? Special:Contributions/Dbeckelheimer has me a bit baffled and confused. Thanks LlamaDude78 (talk) 19:28, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From what I can see, no. And most especially not for the IP. I'm not sure exactly what should be done, though. Tagging for speedy deletion maybe? - Purplewowies (talk) 19:46, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Or maybe not, since none of the criterions seem to fit it. At any rate, I've contacted the user on their talk page. - Purplewowies (talk) 19:54, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps it can be taken to Wikipedia:Miscellany for deletion??? LlamaDude78 (talk) 20:08, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Perhaps. Would have suggested that, but I was in a hurry to get somewhere. - Purplewowies (talk) 02:23, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, I nominated the IP ones already at MfD. For the ones for newly registered users, I think I will just contact them and see what they want to do about it. LlamaDude78 (talk) 12:20, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Cannot login[edit]

Hi - I tried to login with my old password, and it would not allow me to do it. So, I clicked on forgot password, and an email was sent to me. It had the username and a temporary password in it. I used the correct capitalization for both, but it will not accept that either. Now it will not let me request a new temporary password for 24 hours. I do not know what to do. It is very frustrating, because I wanted to work on my article today. My user name is Bookgirlnanaimo. The article I was writing was Lögberg-Heimskringla: The Icelandic Community Newspaper. I am re-doing this, because I didn't sign in the correct way previously. 70.66.2.185 (talk) 19:32, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

70.66.2.185 (talk) 19:31, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The article is here and the name under which you edited it is, indeed, "Bookgirlnanaimo". I don't know why the password sent to you doesn't work. Bielle (talk) 19:52, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks, but I don't know what to do now. Can somebody help me to login?70.66.2.185 (talk) 20:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Some browsers can store a username and password and may replace what you try to enter. Can you try another browser or computer? PrimeHunter (talk) 21:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I will try that. Thanks for the suggestion! 70.66.2.185 (talk) 21:27, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

South Africa[edit]

How many white people live in South Africa? --Koorstaad (talk) 19:49, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in knowledge questions and will try to answer just about any question in the universe (except how to use Wikipedia, since that is what this Help Desk is for). Just follow the link, select the relevant section, and ask away. I hope this helps. - Purplewowies (talk) 19:52, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Is he relevant enough or not?[edit]

I have information on Lionel Herbert Dahmer, father of the late serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer. Is he relevant enough to have his own article? He wrote a book on his son. Would that make him a writer? Thank you. Mark. Alabamaboy1992 (talk) 20:26, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

See the guidance for notability at WP:N RudolfRed (talk) 20:32, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Basically, Lionel is not notable in his own right; and notability cannot be derived by being the relative of a genuinely notable person. There are millions of us non-notable writers across the planet. --Orange Mike | Talk 21:23, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

screen shot[edit]

Hi, Can you tell me if it's OK to use a screen shot of an article within a book of my photos I'm making on blurb.ca?

It's a screen shot of the article describing a storm event that the photos are of. You can see the whole web page, including wikipedia logo and left sidebar. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 205.210.170.49 (talk) 21:16, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

From Wikipedia:Copyrights: "Wikipedia content can be copied, modified, and redistributed if and only if the copied version is made available on the same terms to others and acknowledgment of the authors of the Wikipedia article used is included (a link back to the article is generally thought to satisfy the attribution requirement; see below for more details)." So you can use the screenshot, so long as you caption it with a link back to the article itself. And people will be allowed to copy the screenshot that you publish. Application/дадатак[edit]

Hello. My name is Sergey Petrov and I come from Belarus. I am looking for a job in Wikipedia and I used to be a school teacher. I hold a diploma from the Minsk Technical College in Chemistry and I can contribute to Chemistry articles. I look forward to a paid position at Wikipedia.

I must know the following: What is the paid rate for each edit and creation of page? Will I be on a salary or paid per edit?

Thank you very much. - Sergey.

Wikipedia is written by volunteers. No-one pays any of us editors. Maproom (talk) 21:46, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Is Jimbo Wales a volunteer or does he get paid? --Wanteeaard (talk) 21:50, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Some high-ups (lawyers, etc.) get paid. But not editors. Maproom (talk) 21:56, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
You could try https://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Job_openings but they are mostly IT jobs. MilborneOne (talk) 21:57, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
(ec)The editors are all volunteers. Wikipedia's parent, the Wikimedia Foundation does have a paid staff. You can see the current job openings here: http://wikimediafoundation.org/wiki/Job_openings. I'm not sure if Jimbo gets paid for his role at Wikimedia or not. You can read about him at WP:JIMBO and Jimmy Wales. RudolfRed (talk) 21:59, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
As I understand the rules anyone who has a paid job with the WMF is not allowed to edit any of the WMF projects' content. That's apparently the only "lawyer-proof" way the WMF can sucessfully deny legal responsibility for the content of any of the sites. Roger (talk) 23:06, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Jimmy Wales certainly edits Wikipedia articles (Edit history in main article space), although maybe he can't be described as having a "paid job" with WMF. --Colapeninsula (talk) 12:56, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]
Sue Gardner, who definitely receives a salary from the Wikimedia Foundation, also edits articles here. Graham87 06:23, 6 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

IP History[edit]

Good Morning, Is there a way I can access information for all previous edits under my IP address? --SkaringRingge (talk) 22:10, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

You can see edits made by logged out users from your current IP address by logging out and clicking Special:MyContributions. It doesn't show edits to pages which were later deleted. Administrators like me can see those. Only CheckUsers can see which edits by logged in users were made from a given IP address. Many Internet connections often change IP address without the user knowing about it. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:18, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

The Lottery[edit]

I need 5 winning lottery numbers for Saturdays Lotto draw from 1-49. I am fed up of working and I want a life of luxury. Thanks. --Wellkomtable1984 (talk) 22:14, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Okay, 1,2,3,4,5. Those numbers will, with near 100% certainty, come up in some lotto somewhere though not necessarily in the same game. Meanwhile, this is still the page for questions about how to use Wikipedia. And fixing lotto games isn't one of those uses. Dismas|(talk) 22:57, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Editing pages with HTML?[edit]

If I was to edit a page under a HTML context would it be possible to include 2 or more images while using gridboxes? Because if the images were 'pixellated' it would use a lot less storage space for a multipurpose website. --ElimatalatedForr (talk) 23:19, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

I think you'll have to explain your question a bit more. If you're talking about editing Wikipedia, then "under a HTML context" doesn't make much sense: Wikipedia pages use Help:Wiki markup, not HTML. If you are talking about something else, you might get more help on the computing reference desk. --ColinFine (talk) 12:08, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

User Reame Process Followed and Seemingly Successful, But Both Original and New User Names Still Appear in Red and are Shown as Being Invalid...[edit]

To Whom it May Concern ~ I recently signed up with Wikipedia using the name Garance Arletty. However, as the name is rather obscure and hard for me to remember I requested a name change to Blythe Spirit. I followed the instructions and was informed, via the 'user rename log' that the name change was successful. Unfortunately, both the original and new user names appear in -red- and the message each displays, when clicked onto, is that currently NEITHER of them is, in essence, active or valid. I can only log in using the original user name, Garance Arletty, which defeats the whole purpose of changing the name to Blythe Spirit and to confuse matters more, my initial -photo- uploaded for the page: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ren%C3%A9_Bazinet, with my original user name, Garance Arletty, is showing up under the new user name, Blythe Spirit, in the 'commons' section. These discrepancies are most apparent on the page containing the user information in relation to the said -photo- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bowler_%26_Tux.jpg. Can someone help me switch the 'Log In' name to Blythe Spirit and help me establish it as valid, so that its link appears in blue? I'd like to also dispense with Garance Arletty, entirely and need to know how to do that, too. Thank you for your kind attention and assistance concerning my problem and this inquiry. ~ B. Buffington — Preceding unsigned comment added by Garance Arletty (talkcontribs) 23:21, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

As shown here, your new name Blythe Spirit does indeed exist. However, you have not created a user page to tell us about you. You don't have to if you don't want to, but if you enter "User:Blythe Spirit" in the search box you will be given an opportunity to create the page. Jc3s5h (talk) 23:27, 4 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

To clarify further, a red link like User:Blythe Spirit simply means no page by that name has been created. It doesn't say anything about whether the username has been registered, which it has. Compare the content of User:Blythe Spirit to User:Made up non-existing name to see the difference. commons:File:Bowler & Tux.jpg was uploaded to Wikimedia Commons. Our software merely has a feature which also shows it at the url http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Bowler_%26_Tux.jpg. The username change at the English Wikipedia does not affect Commons. You can make a request there at commons:Commons:Changing username. It can take some time before a username change is registered in all affected places. [1] says the change was 26 August, 8 days ago. Is it here at http://en.wikipedia.org you are still unable to log in as Blythe Spirit? What happens when you try? PrimeHunter (talk) 00:08, 5 September 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Raymond Charles Hanson source material is incorrect in a few things.[edit]

[1]Hi I recently attempted to make some changes to my fathers wiki profile (Raymond Charles Hanson - Composer ) after reading it and being quite annoyed at the fact that his tenure as a teacher at the Con was cut short by 14 years!!! Firstly it was changed back. Secondly I receive a message from ??? someone there telling me its not OK for me to make changes and how do they know I am his daughter anyway?

I have a birth certificate and am happy to PROVE who I am as I am actually the manager of his musical estate and have been for nearly 20 years!! What I would like to know is who the heck writes this stuff in the first place and what was the source material as it is WRONG in stating his work at the Con finished in 1962, he worked right up until he died in 1976 and nearly every reference I find is referring to this incorrect information, which is why I need to locate it and have it changed.

I have been in touch with the Con, the AMC, the NLA and yourselves as I am trying to locate the source of this misinformation and for all your talk about verifying facts, there is no notation regarding the source of this one. There is a recent PHD thesis that used Ray as a case study which has researched his life quite thoroughly and perhaps this should be the new Source of information as it is the most difinitive research ever conducted into his life, both musical and personal. I can give you the details of this work if you are interested in accuracy in your bios.

Meantime if someone could get back to me with some answers to my very real concerns, or how and who to address them if not here, I would be very grateful.

regards Annabel Gleeson (nee Hanson)

User:Gatoclass correctly reverted your additions, because they were unsourced. Information added to Wikipedia must be verifiable, and in order to be so, it must be referenced to independent reliable sources. If you have published sources for the information you want to add, then the information may possibly be added; but because of your conflict of interest, you are likely to find it hard to satisfy Wikipedia's criteria about neutrality, which is why you are best advised to discuss the matter on the article's talk page rather than editing the article directly.
If the article contains false information, as you say it does, the case is a little different. As long as the information you object to is not referenced to a reliable source, then you may remove it: but you should still be cautious about replacing it with other information, as I suggested in the previous paragraph.
It is true that much of the article is unreferenced, and many of the references which are given are inadequately precise: therefore much of the article should either be better referenced or be removed, but should not be changed unless references can be found.
But one sentence that you have repeatedly removed is "The marriage proved difficult". It is understandable that you should want these words removed, but the fact is that the Australian Dictionary of Biography uses these very words. (I am not saying that those words are true - I obviously don't know - but I am saying that a presumably reliable source states them). In fact that whole paragraph seems to be slightly reworded from the ADB
Gatoclass's comments on your talk page are pointing out that in general, nobody knows who you are on the internet. Your providing evidence of who you are can be relevant for certain purposes, but in this case is not relevant, because there is no way that anybody who might read the article to determine who you are: that is why we require verifiability from published sources.
I am guessing that this response will not satisfy you, but I cannot see what we can say further. --ColinFine (talk) 12:53, 5 September 2012 (UTC) (just an editor)[reply]
