Red reference errors

Can someone please fix all the red errors in the References section at Oggy and the Cockroaches? They all say "Wikilink embedded in URL title (help)". I clicked on the help link and read the section about this type of CS1 error, but can't figure out how to fix it. So I was hoping someone could please correct the six references that have this error. Boggled By Citations!

I am somewhat of a wikipedia newb but have learned about archiving pages today and have fixed many citations on the animal collective page by searching archives. I have no clue how I messed up this citation number fifteen, I have looked over it many times and read pertinent help pages but cant figure it out. :'( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Animal_Collective Izoanefts (talk) 04:14, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

 Fixed - You just named the cite incorrectly. You should have named it "veyesor post", which also applies to cite 14. So the error was caused because you gave the cite a name that didn't exist elsewhere, and didn't include a URL. Sorry, I'm still so confused. I did not want to name it "veyesor post" because it is not the same post by veyesor it's an entirely~ different issue that doesn't have to do with cite 14 except that the same user veyesor was posting in the same forum in cite 14 but under a different topic. Also I was pretty brain dead when I did this late last night.. so I may not have included a url. :/ wat

I am confused by what you mean when you said "you gave the cite a name that didn't exist elsewhere"? Where else should it have existed? And can you just tell me if help desk is an okay place to come with all my little problems like this? You can give one use of a citation a short name at the front. If you want to use it again you just use the name you gave it for other uses instead of writing it out again. See Wikipedia:Referencing_for_beginners#Same_reference_used_more_than_once. The help desk is the correct place. Some editors phone the Queen, Obama, and the Vatican. This desk is usually easier to get through to, responds faster, and probably will give better answers.--Canoe1967 (talk) 17:27, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Hi; as Canoe1967 says, if someone gives a reference a name, e.g., <ref name="a name">cite goes here</ref>, that reference can be cited later by simply typing <ref name="a name"/> (note the closing slash). When you renamed <ref name="Collected Animals, Post by Brian Weitz, May 12, 2006"> to <ref name="veyesor post">, a cite that consisted only of <ref name="Collected Animals, Post by Brian Weitz, May 12, 2006" /> broke, as there was no longer a reference by that name. – 29611670.x (talk) 17:40, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Strange citation error

In my draft User:Toshio Yamaguchi/List of islands of the Federated States of Micronesia there is a strange citation error. I am sure that error wasn't there when I last edited the page. I guess it is because of this edit to {{Cite book}}. I've read Help:CS1 errors#parameter ignored but still don't understand what I have to do to resolve that error. It seems that the editor[n]-last= and editor[n]-first= parameters are no longer supported, probably since this edit to the template, although they are listed at the documentation of {{Cite book}}. That citation really never worked properly. Three of the editors should have been listed followed by et al. The problem is because |editor[n]-last= and |editor[n]-first= are not valid parameters so were ignored, |editor-last=, |editor1-last= are synonyms as are |editor-first= and |editor1-first=

The error message is new, but the problem has been there all along. Someone updated the {{Cite book}} documentation to use last[n] and it appears someone interpreted it literally. And since that section is supposed to be copy/paste, I can't blame them. I will look at fixing this. --  Gadget850 (Ed) ^talk 20:07, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

nxtbook pages allowed as references ?

Hi,

I discovered today nxtbook website through this link, used as a reference in a Wikipedia article. I wonder if this is allowed, as it seems strange to me that full magazines could be legally available for free on the web. The article NXTbook Media didn't help me much. There is no problem using the nxtbook as a reference, as long as you are not copying the text you are not infringing copyright. If you have qualms about linking to the site, you don't need to do so because it's a RL publication anyway Jimfbleak - talk to me? 18:06, 16 April 2013 (UTC)

Problem with ISBN numbers

I found the page Category:Pages with ISBN errors and thought I would have a go at fixing some of them. I got to the page A Message of Peace and ref 3 reports that the ISBN 978-1-84880-050-2 is incorrect. However that is what is published on it. I thought I would add the |ignore-isbn-error=true switch to the cite book template, but then decided to check the ISBN check digit. The hahnlibrary ISBN checker reports that it is correct, as does morovia.com. I am not sure what to do next, as it looks like there is a problem with the Wikipedia ISBN checking algorithm. Regards. The parameter in the citation is: | isbn=: 978-1-84880-050-2. The error results from the colon preceding the ISBN. There should be nothing but a single ISBN in |isbn=.

Wikipedia:Articles for creation Question

Is has been a while since I have worked with Wikipedia so I wanted to find out about posting it. It is under my contributions tab but the article says Wikipedia:Articles for creation/Zalmon Gilbert Simmons II before the Title. I disagree. This person is notable enough to have his own page from my preliminary look of the article. {{subst:submit}} it for review. Don't be discouraged if it is denied the first time. Image Ownership

Is there any way to retain copyright for images I post on Wiki pages?

I have a license to use certain images from a specific scientific authority. These would be essential to explain the topic of my page. I do not have authority to pass these images n to others for use on their own websites - only for publication under my name.

Is this possible,and if so how do I configure the images to ensure this?

Many people mistakenly think that licensing for Wikipedia is giving up the copyright. This isn't the case, however, the required license does mean that others can use the images, so the distinction may not be helpful.

There are some circumstances (mainly involving images of logos) where an image can be posted her but not used elsewhere. If you explain more about the nature of the images, we could determine whether non-free use applies.

As for helping out, you do not have to apply. You simply start editing.

No. Apart from the very limited exceptions SPhilbrick mentions, you may not post images unless the owner of the copyright explicitly releases them under one of the acceptable licences; whichever licence they choose will still allow anybody to use the images for any purpose, commercial or not, as long as they attribute them correctly. --ColinFine (talk) 22:58, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

period of purple crying

How do I make a suggestion that this topic of normal crying, extended for newborns, 2 to 6 months old, be introduced as an article? Babies cry relentlessly, cannot be comforted, no apparent reason for the frequent and intense crying. It is important for new parents and all parents of newborns, especially to prevent child abuse. How do I ask for the article to be introduced and made part of Wikipedia? If you can add a few sentences to User:Canoe1967/Period of purple crying then we can add the video as a source. If anyone has the video they could expand the article from that. I believe that I have the video on DVD. I'll have to see if I can find it and find out if there are any copyrights on it (I'm thinking there may not be as it is an educational video handed out by hospitals, but I could be wrong). It probably is copyright but may have a 'free licence'. If not you could email the publisher and see if they are willing to release it. That would save them making and distributing copies. When they update it we can just overwrite the file. See http://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/Commons:Licensing for how to spot a free licence. If the feds made it it may be public domain. There is some information online from different sources. The subject is concerning the video given to parents of newborns at hospitals. The "parent" source is "shaken baby syndrome". They are very eager to get the message out. Thanks so much for working on this. Just to know about it is so very helpful to parents when the baby is screaming non-stop. The article could probably go in Category:Infancy with a wikilinked sentence or 'see also' to any other articles that concern it. I added a video from an expert with a short description as a reference to User:Canoe1967/Period of purple crying. You could rephrase his description between the dots and the reference to avoid copyright violations on his description. If you find his email we may be able to use more of his description if he is willing to license it for use. He would need to email OTRS. Wikipedia:Donating copyrighted materials has more details. Template infobox writer -- occupation parameter

I posted these questions on the Template:Infobox writer talk page yesterday. No response yet.

Is it appropriate to use an unbulleted list in the Occupation parameter? What is the reason for specifying "please don't separate entries using line breaks <br>" in the Occupation parameter? As many as there are. {{Unbulleted list}} and friends {{Flatlist}} and {{Plainlist}}) are recommended because they generate HTML list markup, which is more "standard". The recommendation and explanation can be found at Template:Plainlist/doc and the Infobox docs, like Template:Infobox person/doc. Not to mention that nice vertical lists with one item per line are easier to maintain than long lines of <BR/>-separated items. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 12:49, 15 April 2013 (UTC)

Table - class no print

An anon got upset at us after a table wouldn't print correctly and added a "no print" command to one of our articles here: [1] I couldn't find any other pages using this, so I doubt it is the done thing. But I also have no idea if there is any way to "fix" the table. So that edit be removed? Rmhermen (talk) 17:42, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

I took a look at it and the table "should" be fixed. (row|col)span values weren't wrapped in quotes and there were some <td> wikitags (|) that were formatted as <tr> wikitags (|-).. simply added a space to fix. Technical 13 (talk) 17:58, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

It appears that the changes have not created a table that can be export to PDF and the anon is still unhappy about it. I have never used the PDF feature myself. Are table unprintable? Rmhermen (talk) 01:31, 14 April 2013 (UTC)

To be honest, I haven't used it either. I would think a properly formatted table would print though, so there must be a stray character someplace throwing it off. Undoing a page move

I recently created the article William Leveson (died 1621), and an unidentified editor has moved the page to William Leveson (mercer).[2] Is there some way this page move can be undone? There is another William Leveson, also a mercer, who died in 1593 with whom this William Leveson is often confused, which is why I used the date of death in the title. The diff identifies the mover as User:069952497a. You could ask them on their talk page why they moved it. Unless the father also has an article in Wikipedia, it's best to stay with current naming conventions. You could add a note to the top of the article to clarify that this article is about the son not the father. RudolfRed (talk) 19:05, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

The former title better satisfies the five criteria specified at Wikipedia Article Titles [3] as most people familiar with the subject would not search for this person under 'mercer' since he is much better known for other aspects of his life and career. (edit conflict) It might be best to file a request at WP:REPAIR (see also WP:HISTMERGE) making it clear what the correct article title should be. For future ref, a page move can be "undone" by performing a second move back to the previous title. This will work provided that no subsequent edits have been made to the redirect which was created as a result of the initial move. --Redrose64 (talk) 21:10, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Watching only a talk page

I notice that when I add a talk page to my watchlist it automatically adds the associated page to the watchlist also. Is there a way to change this or remove the non-talk page from my watchlist? If I'm watching a user's talk page I don't care what happens on their user page. I tried going to "edit watchlist" but it only shows the non-talk page. I'm afraid if I remove it, it will also remove the talk page which is not the result I want. RudolfRed (talk) 19:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Actually, you can do some CSS work to do so using Wikipedia:Hide Pages in Watchlist. The instructions aren't very user friendly, but lets say you wanted to hide the talk page for the help desk, you would go to Special:MyPage/common.css and add the following code:

.watchlist-5-Help_desk { display: none; }

Alternatively, if you wanted to watch my talk page but not my user page you would add the following code:

.watchlist-2-Ryan_Vesey { display: none; }

Trying to add an interwiki link on the Cain and Able page

I am trying to add an interwiki link on the Cain and Abel to the French wikipedia. On the French side they have separate articles for Cain and Able. When I try to add a interwiki link from Cain and Abel to [4] I get an error: "Site link frwiki:Caïn already used by item Q205365." I do not see the french link being used here; what am I missing? meshach (talk) 21:41, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Interwiki links now go via Wikidata, and as it says, the item D:Q205365 is already linked to fr:Caïn. Wikidata does not allow two different items to point to the same article (see D:WD:Interwiki conflicts), so it is not now possible to link Cain and Abel to fr:Caïn in that way (I think the old interwiki mechanism still works, but I don't think it is recommended. Part of the point of the Wikidata project, I believe is to make sure that interwiki links are really linking corresponding articles rather than loosely connected ones.) --ColinFine (talk) 23:11, 13 April 2013 (UTC)

Sorry about the not very specific title! Anyway, I'm editing the article about Oona O'Neill, who was the daughter of Eugene O'Neill and wife of Charlie Chaplin. She's currently listed as belonging to the category of 'Bermudian actors' and recently this nationality+occupation combo was also added to the 'persondata short description' .

The problem is that O'Neill wasn't really an actress. She did express a desire to go into acting in her youth, but apart from a very short stint in very small role in a play in New Jersey, she never acted in any project and after marrying Chaplin aged 18 stopped pursuing a career in any field. After Chaplin's death, she appeared briefly in a film called Broken English, but this was apparently as a favour to the director, who was her friend, rather than a legitimate attempt from her to become a professional actress (I will be adding sources for all of this information once I get down to overhauling the article). O'Neill therefore never really had an occupation – she was simply known as Eugene O'Neill's daughter and Chaplin's wife. I feel that categorizing her as a 'Bermudian actor' is factually incorrect – but I don't know what to replace it with, since it seems that an 'occupational' category is needed for a biography article. I would be very grateful for any advice on how to categorize her – are there any categories for people who are famous for their marriages? I see the phrase "Bermudian Actor" shows up twice in the article. The category that shows up on the bottom of the page can be removed by deleting the line:

[[Category:Bermudian actors]]

There is no requirement that it be replaced with anything else although it would be a good idea to post your reasons on the talk page and the edit comment so people don't think it's vandalism.

The other line says:

| SHORT DESCRIPTION = Bermudian actor

As far as I can tell that can be replaced with any description you want. The help text is here. If it's blank it will get tagged, but the point seems to be that if there are multiple people with that name, it identifies which Oona_O'Neill you're talking about. If you think "Charlie Chaplin's wife" is the best description of her, make that change. (Unlike the previous change, this change will not be visible on the page itself, only on certain pages that link to it. Given that there's currently only one "Oona O'Neill" page on Wikipedia, changes to that line might not be visible at all.) As I said above, you should post on the talk page to clarify what you're doing. One of the policies here is to be WP:BOLD, so if I've told you anything wrong and someone disagrees you can work it out from there.

She's actually had two roles, which is unfortunately more than a lot of people who attempt the profession get outside of school. Should we really be trying to decide whether someone qualifies to be called an actor or not?
