why was I deleted[edit]

Hi Wiki Just curious but I have followed the various suggested steps to try to understand why Gwen Dale deleted my page. can't work it out based on any of your criteria. Can you advise? Thanks - Alex Duval Smith — Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.221.181.120 (talk) 00:28, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to the article Alex Duval Smith which was deleted by Gwen Gale in 2008? It was unsourced a month after creation and only had four lines. The deletion log links to the used criteria on "A7". It's possible the subject satisfies our criteria like Wikipedia:Notability (people), but the article didn't. Check[edit]

Hi,

Can someone check if my edits is ok at Gottfrid Svartholm and The Ghost of Tom Joad? There might be some mis-spelling and grammar errors... My English isn't the best...

Thanks in advance --Pelle Hansen (talk) 02:57, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It looks like your edits have been copyedited by others.--ukexpat (talk) 16:46, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

NOAA Climate Data Chart or Template[edit]

I see colorful climate data charts for many localities. They are referenced to NOAA. I am trying to figure out how to add one of these? Smoke321 (talk) 03:20, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

The best advice I can give is to copy and paste one from another article for format, and use the reference link to find the data for the particular locality you are looking for. Just copy it to your sandbox, put the data in it from the NOAA website, then copy it into the article you want to add it to. --Jayron32 04:32, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Removing prod blp[edit]

I just submitted my first wikipedia page. It was flagged for deletion because it did not have verifying references. These have been added. How do I remove the prod blp tag as instructed? Is this an item found in the edit area?

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by GMB3 (talkcontribs)

The OP seems to be referring to Gary M. Burge. And the PROD tag was removed by another editor. Dismas|(talk) 06:14, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

viewing images with Latin definitions.[edit]

Is there a way that I can click on the Latin definitions, and request the English translation and / or definition?

Thankyou, Sincerely, Thekingandme, — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thekingandme (talkcontribs) 07:26, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Images do not normally have "definitions" in Latin or in any other language. Can you give an example of the images that you mean? Maproom (talk) 08:58, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you are looking directly at a file page that's on Commons, its description may be available in more than one language. - Purplewowies (talk) 11:25, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I wonder if you are looking at taxonomic names - the names of plants and animals where we do have Latin "captions" e.g. Ligustrum quihoui These names can include many different characteristics, like the geographic range, ecological notes, behavior, or a "latinized" version of the name of the discoverer e.g. Nepenthes smilesii Some of these do not translate, but there is usually an explanation in the article, or by clicking on the genus in the Taxo box. Reference list issue[edit]

Hi, My edit was reviewed to have mistake for non-reference list, so should I type my reference as {{example1}} ? at the end of page ?\

tq for advice, appreciated.

Forsbrand — Preceding unsigned comment added by Forsbrand (talkcontribs)

It looks like you're referring to Straits Quay. You've added the reflist template to the references section but you haven't put any references in the article text. Maybe Wikipedia:References for beginners would be helpful to you. Dismas|(talk) 09:36, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Present Duke de Mouchy - 2013[edit]

Antoine de Noailles did not assume the title Duke de Mouchy when his father died. He has given the title and Mouchy to his son, Charles Antoine and taken the title - Duke de Pois - for himself. → — Preceding unsigned comment added by Jdemouchy (talkcontribs) 10:40, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for contacting us - however, Wikipedia requires all information to be verifiable in a reliable source. Could you please tell us where this information can be confirmed? - Arjayay (talk) 10:58, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I think User:Jdemouchy is referring to edits made to Antoine Georges Marie de Noailles.[1] -- Jreferee (talk) 14:40, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

How to change the title of a wiki page?[edit]

There is a wiki page called Claudius' expulsion of some Jews from Rome, and I would like to remove the word "some" from this title. How is this done?

(The background is that I have recently added the original Latin sources. In doing so, I noticed that the Latin sources mention "Jews" or "all Jews", but never "some Jews". By the way, there is a legitimate scholarly discussion whether the Latin authors were confusing Jews with Christians, but that is another matter). — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.131.44.86 (talk) 11:49, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Moved. (Technically, you don't "change the title", you "move" the article to exist under a new title.) Maproom (talk) 12:16, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Maproom, that was quick. In general, how does one "move" an article? Perhaps you can point me towards a weblink with a step-by-step guide? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 86.131.44.86 (talk) 13:02, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The link is at WP:move. - David Biddulph (talk) 13:07, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

problem with barnstar[edit]

Someone gave me a User talk:Malke 2010#Barnstar but when I make an edit under it, the edit becomes part of the barnstar. When I try to move the barnstar to my user page, it seems to absorb all the other barnstars. There's got to be something in the code that's off but I'm not seeing it. Can someone look at it? Thanks. Malke 2010 (talk) 15:41, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

It was missing a closing |} I've added this, and some junk text underneath to show that it works - just overwrite the junk text. Arjayay (talk) 15:48, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Okay, thanks. The |} was originally there but it was right after the editor's signature, it wasn't below the barnstar text, so that must be the thing that was off. Malke 2010 (talk) 15:52, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, |} must be on its own line to work. I have posted the problem at User talk:North8000#Barnstar code errors. PrimeHunter (talk) 16:54, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Christ church, gipsy hill - how can I change capitalisation of the page heading?[edit]

I have just created a new page called "Christ church, gipsy hill". I realize it would look better as "Christ Church, Gipsy Hill". How can the name of the page be changed, as this does not seem possible using the standard editing tools? Brixtonhill (talk) 17:06, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

For this you would use the 'Requested move' template. Add this to the talk page you would like renamed:
== Requested move ==
{{subst:Requested move|Christ Church, Gipsy Hill|Capitalization of title}} — Preceding unsigned comment added by Skarz (talkcontribs) 17:17, 23 December 2013‎ (UTC)[reply]
Actually, as your account should be Autoconfirmed, you should be able to do this yourself - please follow the instructions at WP:MOVE - Arjayay (talk) 17:35, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you. Brixtonhill (talk) 17:41, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I have added it to Christ Church#England. Unsurprisingly, it's a popular name for churches. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:30, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Ref 1 from the population section in the infobox (coupled with some strange reformatting that puts the comma into the year). - David Biddulph (talk) 19:53, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed in [2]. Some template parameters are processed in ways which put limitations on them. Template:Infobox settlement#Population, demographics shows the population_footnotes parameter. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:41, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Account deletion[edit]

How can I delete my account Beinyhar? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Beinyhar (talkcontribs) 23:25, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You can't, accounts are never deleted at Wikipedia. You can only stop using it. You can tag your user and user talk pages with {{retired}} to indicate this to others, if you choose. DES (talk) 23:30, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
But if you would like to VANISH (I noticed you edited that page), please follow the directions presented for vanishing, wherein you go to WP:CHU and change your username to something random (for instance, a keysmash like "uj49q8389498serrt"). However, this is a last resort and should really only be done if you plan to never come back. - Purplewowies (talk) 05:46, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Where do I report an editor that stalks[edit]

Hello I am a contributor on here and recently have been the victim of bullying and threats and stalking I would like to report the user but do not know about how or where? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osrius (talkcontribs) 23:32, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

You probably should check Wikipedia:Dispute resolution. APerson (talk!) 23:40, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
If you are complaining about the editors who declined your article creation requests, I would have to agree that Bardia Rahim does not appear notable except as a mediocre martial artist and pot dealer of questionable morals. True Honor is also of questionable notability. Both articles are written in an overly promotional, hagiographic style. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 23:53, 23 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Stigmatella aurantiaca - I'm looking for the answer to my question above? Why would you even say that with such an important question, wow? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osrius (talkcontribs) 00:18, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I tried to see what this stalking and bullying consisted of. Abuse does occur, but a few minutes of search didn't reveal what you were talking about, so I was trying to figure out what might have been going on. Sorry if I misunderstood. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 00:22, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You can raise the issue at WP:ANI, but you need to <insert>try<insert> resolve the issue directly with the editor in question first. Also all sides of any dispute will be looked at and evaluated. GB fan 00:24, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Thank You Kindly — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osrius (talkcontribs) 00:26, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
You would need to provide WP:diffs to support your allegation of "bullying and threats and stalking", as so far we haven't seen any evidence of that. --David Biddulph (talk) 00:39, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Osrius - The cropped photo you uploaded at File:Sean Mattison pic 1.jpg and took on 31 December 2012 is from a larger photo at here, which notes that it is a photo by AJ Neste of the Pac Sun USA Surf Team At Worlds. What is the basis for your stating that you are the copyright holder of File:Sean Mattison pic 1.jpg? -- Jreferee (talk) 01:33, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
The photo at File:CHRIS BURKARD.jpg which you uploaded stating "I, the copyright holder of this work", specifically says "(C) CHRIS BURKARD PHOTOGRAPHY 2010".What is the basis for your stating that you are the copyright holder of File:CHRIS BURKARD.jpg. -- Jreferee (talk) 01:38, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Jreferee What is the basis for your stating a question that has nothing to do with the topic which is about reporting a user that has made threats? I would gladly provide my material which proves I am copyright holder, additionally you have me looking at there photo now wondering why they are stating they are the copyright holder as I provided material requested when I originally submitted, feel free to speak to me on my talk page if needed. But unless you have some information you can provide for me and other user when a threat is made that is really what this is about. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osrius (talkcontribs) 01:48, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I was looking to find the basis for your victim of bullying and threats and stalking statement, did not find it, and came across the above copyright issues. so I posted the above. -- Jreferee (talk) 02:01, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I have nominated File:CHRIS BURKARD.jpg and File:Sean Mattison pic 1.jpg for deletion. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 10:20, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I see what happened, I state a simple question about an editor who bullied me. Instead I get bombarded with questions that have nothing to do with my question except for a few that tried to help, which I sincerely thank you. I see many of you went into my contributions and talk pages looking for any little thing you can to use against me for what ever reason I do not know? Now if you look at any of my contributions they are all marked up on the top, and they were not before today. I don't know what kind of game or power trip you on but I am definitely looking into this. I can't believe a woman can't ask a question without all of her contributions marked up? This is beyond weird and its kinda freaks me out? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Osrius (talkcontribs) 02:11, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Hi. First, please don't strike through others' comments as that's akin to redacting another's words. Second, tildes should be put after your posts on the page itself, not in the edit summary; they won't work there. Third, these people specifically stated they looked through your contribs to see where people may have been stalking you. You will need to bring up diffs of when this kind of thing happens if you bring it up at dispute resolution or ANI. After (very briefly) looking through your contribs, I myself can't find evidence of this sort of thing to give you the best advice possible, so basically, I can't give much more information on a plan of action for that. As for marked up contributions, I also don't see that, unless you mean something different than what is pictured in this section of the revision deletion policy page: Wikipedia:REVDEL#Technical details. If that is what you mean and I for some reason cannot see those, revision deletion/oversight is usually done due to VERY BAD content (or personal, like phone # or something) being added or something way out of line in the edit summary. - Purplewowies (talk) 05:59, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Stalking and bullying are serious offenses, so when I saw your charges, I naturally looked through your contributions to see where these acts were committed so that I could better advise you on what to do. I personally saw no bullying. I only saw multiple declines of articles that you submitted for creation by Balablitz, EagerToddler39, and APerson, and I saw a bit of mildly heated discussion at User_talk:Balablitz#Discussion_-_Bardia_Rahim. I agreed with the declines. I felt that the subjects lacked notability, saw that most of the references were to nonreliable sources such as social media sites, and saw that some of the material seemed to represent copyvio of Gracie magazine. At one point, Balablitz blanked a page because he felt that some of the material should not appear in Wikipedia. Without specifying exactly what I saw in the edits, I should note that, in general, such information as exact birth dates of living people, phone numbers, social security numbers, home addresses etc. should not be published online. Stigmatella aurantiaca (talk) 07:27, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Harassment explains what is defined as harassment, and what to do about it. However, as others have explained, if you are going to complain about specific incidents, you will have to point to those exact incidents - in practical terms, this means linking to the edits in question using diffs and saying why they breach the policy on acceptable behaviour. Making nonspecific but serious accusations of "bullying", "threats" and especially "stalking" (a term we don't actually use here, and which is strongly deprecated) isn't helpful, because apart from anything else it means that anyone who wants to take the trouble to help is then obliged to go back through all your previous contributions to try to find the incidents you're talking about so they can advise you effectively. Like the others I have just done this, and I do not see any "bullying" or Wikihounding, and most certainly no threats, and I also saw the potential copyright problems. Far from "having nothing to do with the topic", Jreferee was quite right to raise the question when s/he spotted them: any images uploaded here with a questionable copyright status must always be highlighted and dealt with as a priority, to protect the Wikimedia Foundation and the rights of the legal copyright holder. As far as the declined submissions are concerned, my own opinion is that they make overly promotional claims and the sources are mostly very poor. I suggest you focus on finding more reliable independent published sources (not blogs, social media etc.) that cover the subject in detail, rather than mentioning it in passing. With regard to the images, you're probably going to have to assert your copyright with the sites that seem to be infringing it, and get their captions changed to reflect your rights, in order to be able to donate these photos to the WMF. -Karenjc (talk) 10:16, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
I haven't looked for specific details. However, I see a very lopsided exchange. I see that User:Osrius came here and asked for advice about how to deal with bullying and threats. Those are serious allegations in Wikipedia, and the Help Desk regulars take them seriously. I see that some of the Help Desk editors looked at the history and concluded that Osrius had submitted some articles, but that other editors deleted them. There were questions asking for diffs (records of changes) showing the bullying, threats, and wikihounding. Osrius then complained about being bombarded by questions that have nothing to do with the original question. The questions appear, based only on the exchange here, to be entirely appropriate. I see one comment by Osrius that shows hostility and fails to assume good faith on the part of the Help Desk editors. That is: "I see many of you went into my contributions and talk pages looking for any little thing you can to use against me for what ever reason I do not know? " I am sure that, to hold against Osrius, is not why they read his or her contributions and talk page comments. They would have done that because they were looking for evidence of bullying or threats. We could have simply told Osrius to post the complaints to WP:ANI, but that is a more contentious forum than the Help Desk. I see no evidence of anyone biting a newcomer or looking for information to hold against him or her, but I do see a newcomer who is defensive and hostile. Osrius: If you want help at the Help Desk, please don't come here with a chip on your shoulder in advance. If you want us to cooperate with you, then please cooperate when we ask reasonable questions and do reasonable research. Robert McClenon (talk) 21:34, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Well said, I applaud your efforts, please note -the only chip on my shoulder was the frustration of no answers to my original question but to be bombarded with other stuff, that was and is very frustrating when all I wanted was help. I believe I was a mirror of those cooperating with me and was only giving them the same amount of respect I was receiving. I do want to cooperate, I am very new, I will take all of this as constructive criticism to better my efforts as a contributor. Osrius (talk) 21:48, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Osrius, what question didn't you get an answer to? Thank you for agreeing to work in a collaborative manner. Robert McClenon (talk) 22:22, 24 December 2013 (UTC)[reply]
