Wikipedia loading very slowly[edit]

I don't know if this has been brought up before, but for the last few days Wikipedia has been loading very slowly for me. It really is making it nearly impossible for me to read or edit Wikipedia, I've never encountered anything like this before. Pages take several minutes to load and often pictures won't fully load at all (they just get stuck after loading about a quarter of the image). Like, I was trying to view some map files, but they wouldn't display properly so I tried to directly download them instead, but the download is going at 12 kb/s! Is this a problem with Wikipedia itself (like a server issue or something?), or is it something to do with my connection? I should say that I am in Ireland and I have a high-speed broadband connection (no other websites are slow for me). --Hibernian (talk) 00:04, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

My connection in the UK is fine right now but there have been times when it is dreadfully slow over the last few days. Other websites weren't affected. Angela Trimbur redirection to Road Rules[edit]

Angela Trimbur's page redirects to Road Rules: X-Treme. On the show's page, her name is listed under "Additional Cast". I've never seen the show, but I doubt it's what's she's most known for, neither does the page provide any useful information about the person.

Should I nominate Angela Trimbur for deletion (or edit it blank)? Is that redirection in accord with the guidelines? --Abderrahman (talk) 00:24, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

We seem to accept redirects to the most minimal information on persons, fictional characters, video games, and weapons, potions, or strengths in said video games. I wouldn't bother nominating it as long as the article verifies at least the person exists. Redirects do not have a notability requirement, only that the subject is discussed somewhere on Wikipedia. There might be a better redirect target you could change it to though. She is mentioned in several Wikipedia articles but her IMdB page ~~does not even mention Road Rules~~ (correction:it does mention it but in a rolled up block). If I were to create a page for her, that would be a reason to stop redirecting, right? It's perfectly acceptable to overwrite a redirect with a new article, it's done all the time. However, IMdB is not considered enough to establish notability (and it has questionable reliability for anything other than basic facts such as cast lists), so you should find additional sources to avoid a deletion nomination. There is an de:Angela Trimbur article on German Wikipedia if you are any good at translating German, but again unreferenced. Spinning Spark 08:46, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

automatic underlining in search box[edit]

Hi today I entered a topic in the search box & found it underlines as I type along. It also underlines when I click on the box with the undertext Search - the line appears under Search, then attaches to the entry. Can you tell me why this is happening please? Can I turn it off? @Manytexts: I don't know the answer. It would probably be helpful if you told us which browser and version you are using. Adding more details to List of Stations on subway lines[edit]

I was wanting to add more details to the list of stations on subway lines at any place in the world such as its location, station type, etc. Would that be okay, as long as it's reliable and appropriate? Can you please contact the army concerning a fraud on Face Book, Skype, and Yahoo using the good name of LT. General James L. Terry, he is claiming to be retiring soon and is looking for a wife. He also claims to have 2 grown children with 3 grand children. Other times claims to be a widow for the past 5 years and has a 13 year old daughter living in GA with her nanny. He stole the good name of the LT. General James L. Terry and is destroying it by scamming woman on the internet, I don't know who to contact to report this abuse of a decorated hero and the abuse of innocent woman who are buying his story. i would love the chance to meet the LT. General Terry but in the real world that will never happen.

If you can't help with exposing this scam can you please tell me who I may contact to help stop this abuse.

Hello, Kathy. TheRedPenOfDoom is right that this page is for asking for help with Wikipedia, not other subjects. But lest you think you've just been palmed off: unfortunately there is nowhere you can go to "stop this abuse": if there were, don't you think it would have been stopped before now? I have added a link to James L. Terry at the Terry (surname) disambiguation page – strange that it wasn't there already. Anyway, I see that most of his talk page is people reporting that he is being impersonated by scammers. I wonder if it would be appropriate to put a notice at the top of the talk page, stating that he is being impersonated, we know about it and regret it, but there is nothing we are able to do about it? RSS/Atom feed[edit]

You can set up a RSS feed to User:DumbBOT/ProdSummary, that should give you what you want if you just want to know when there are new items. However, dumbbot tends to update a whole chunk of articles at a time so you probably will not be able to see from the RSS feed all the articles that have been added or deleted, only that something has changed. Free library[edit]

The answer is apparently "not applicable". Looking through the site, I get the distinct impression that it's a journal aggregator, working basically like JSTOR or EBSCOhost. Nobody cites JSTOR or EBSCOhost — they cite the publications that they provide. In the same way, you shouldn't cite thefreelibrary.com because it's apparently just reproducing other publications. You'll have to evaluate the publications on an individual basis — it looks as if their range of publications is too big to make a single statement about everything. That makes sense. It seems a better way of finding old newspaper articles, than their own websites, but yes I take your point about citing the actual article than the website itself. Same-page links[edit]

Place a link from a page to itself, and bold text normally results, e.g. [[Wikipedia:Help desk]] produces Wikipedia:Help desk. The same thing occurs when the link is present on a transclusion; see WP:BRINT for a way this is used in navboxes. With this in mind, why is this not the case with any of the links at the right side of Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Order of the Bull's Blood (hoax) (3rd nomination)? You can click the "3rd nomination" link as many times as you wish, but it won't turn black, and yet it's not sending you to a redirect: it goes directly to the page in question, but it remains a link. Greetings, I am a relatively new editor for Wiki. I can't find how to upload a picture to an article? And ashamadely, how to create a totally new page. I've just been adding information and references to existing pages and now am looking to go beyond that. have requested several passwords resets over 72 hours and nothing has arrived to my email address[edit]

Hi, I was planning to log back in as I need to edit a few pages (url's below) and I prefer do to that logged in.... it's been a few months since I last updated anything. I have, of course, forgotten my password so I requested a reset - waited 24 hours, nothing arrived by email to my email address (which was checked and definitely correct) so I requested another temporary password and again nothing has arrived. If you tell us your username we can try sending the account a test e-mail. You could try asking for a reset password for the username instead of the e-mail address, but if the e-mail you entered for the account is not valid you will still not get it. You're very likely right: the English Wikipedia has yet to get around to uploading new maps for U.S. congressional districts as they were redrawn prior to the 2012 elections. This is true of every state, not just Wisconsin. Every map should be labelled correctly though; that is to say, if it's a map of a district that existed from 2002 to 2012, it should say so. I've just changed some captions at the articles on each Wisconsin district (Wisconsin's 3rd congressional district, Wisconsin's 4th congressional district, etc.) to more accurately reflect this, so if that's what you're referring to I hope that's solved the problem. If there are maps elsewhere that have incorrect or misleading captions though, then you'll need to either be more specific as to what problem you want to see fixed, or just fix it yourself. Angus Deayton (1)[edit]

When correcting grammatical errors in the Wikipedia article on Angus Deayton I came across a blatant misquote in the paragraph on the "Have I Got News For You"/Deayton cocaine scandal (para 5 under "Radio and Television Career"). The quote that comes up under footnote #8 does not tally with the quote in the article, which is a paraphrase. As the subject matter here is sensitive, I altered the wording to make it accord with the article quoted in the footnote, but am now not sure if I should have done. Does Wikipedia countenance paraphrases of quotes? Surely only when it is made clear that words from quotes are paraphrased, otherwise what of Wikipedia's reputation for accuracy? --P123cat1 (talk) 17:25, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

You are quite right to correct this - it is impermissible to paraphrase a quotation in such a manner. See Wikipedia:Quotations#Formatting for the few cases where changes to a quote are permitted:

If not used verbatim, any alterations must be clearly marked, i.e. [square brackets] for added or replacement text, an ellipsis (...) for removed text (see WP:ELLIPSIS for details), and emphasis noted after the quotation as "[emphasis added]" or "[emphasis in the original]". Exceptions are trivial spelling or typographical errors that obviously do not affect the intended meaning; these may be silently corrected or may be retained and marked with " [sic]"—using the template [sic]—to indicate that the error is in the original source.

Deleting pages with large edit histories[edit]

I don't know if this is the place for asking this question, but I think it is. An admin once deleted the sandbox, crashing wikipedia. From what I gather, it has something to do with the large number of edits overwhelming the servers. There's now a block on admins deleting pages with more than 5,000 edits.

My question is, from a technical perspective, if a page with many thousands of edits needed to be deleted for some reason, how would an admin go about it without crashing the servers? Well, there is a "bigdelete" right, and stewards have it, so we would presumably ask them. As an aside, I don't think oversight would be of any help regardless, since oversight doesn't actually delete any revisions or anything; it just makes revisions non-viewable by non-oversighters (but still present) in the article history. [edit conflict with Rmhermen] Part of the issue is the prevention of vandalism by rogue admins or compromised admin accounts. See this story about a rogue admin rampage, as Robdurbar deleted huge pages such as Cheese, History, and the Main Page. You may also find WP:DDTMP relevant; it describes the situation from before the Main Page was undeletable. And yes, it occasionally does happen that we need to delete such a page, although it's sometimes a history merge or other housekeeping situation. Angus Deayton (2)[edit]

Thanks for the help with my first query on Angus Deayton earlier today. I am afraid I have come across two more misquotes in the article, in section 3.1, "Tabloid allegations and reaction", which I cannot see how to handle following the guidance you gave. Because I had become suspicious about this article, I listened to the short video clip of the Parkinson interview with Merton, as per footnote #26, and Merton did not starkly say that Deayton was a "dull man", as the article has it, he said he was "quite a dull man"; Merton was relating to Parky the time when they first heard about the Deayton scandal and how they were all surprised because they thought he was "quite a dull man", i.e. he was being humorous. Then later on there are some quotes taken from a "Daily Telegraph" article, footnote #27, all of which are accurate except for one. The "Daily Telegraph" article quotes Merton as saying, "'If anyone didn't know me and him didn't get on, then they hadn't been watching the show for 14 years'", and while I suppose it is fair enough to paraphrase that as they "never got on", as the Wiki article has it, those are not the man's actual words. I am sorry to be so legalistic about the first misquote, but I get very irritated at the way words can be slanted to give a different meaning by lifting them out of context. Journalists are past masters at it and I am wondering who wrote this Wiki article. Or perhaps I am being paranoid and the author of the article is just a clumsy writer. Anyway, what can be done about these non-quotes? Ellipsis marks and square brackets cannot be applied here. --P123cat1 (talk) 20:47, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I'm inclined to think that the paragraph in question needs considerable trimming, if not complete deletion. I'm not sure that we need commentary (positive or negative) from fellow game-show participants at all. It amounts to little of real significance, and reads like tabloid gossip. I found it. An IP (217.43.242.68) added the quote with the edit summary "Added Paul Merton's true feelings toward him."

If you go through the history you can click on a date and time until the text you are looking for is not there. I did this at the bottom of each page of changes, and then started searching for where the text had been added. No, they are used for many different purposes and not collected in one place. You can find a lot of them by selecting "Namespace:Template" at Special:WhatLinksHere/Template:Top icon, but you have to click through to each template to see the icon it uses. Stylization/Formatting[edit]

Not too long ago, there was a "Beta" option that gave better looking formatting to the Wikipedia pages, including serif fonts for titles, borderless images, and a much cleaner contents menu. Now, the serif fonts are default, but the other features are gone, along with the option. Is there anyway to get this back? I really prefer the way articles looked with it activated. I don't know how the Beta feature looked but the bottom of Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets has "New image thumb design" which gives borderless images. This link shows how it will look for American Revolutionary War. PrimeHunter (talk) 23:42, 23 April 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Very close, thanks. There still is a very slight border though, and the captions are bordered; in the beta there was no border whatsoever. Can't find the MW page[edit]

I'd like to add a link to the deletion log on a MediaWiki page, but I can't find it. Whenever you attempt to delete a page and aren't allowed, you get the following message: "You do not have permission to delete this page, for the following reason:[line break][reason]" See https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Cheese&action=delete if you're an admin (can't be deleted because you don't have bigdelete) or https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Wikipedia:HD&action=delete if you're not (can't be deleted because non-admins don't have delete) for a couple of examples. I'd like to edit the MediaWiki message so that it provides a link to the page's deletion log; what's the message's name? In case anyone wonders, I sometimes click the "delete" button to see the deletion log (it appears at the bottom of the deletion page when the page is deletable), but of course this means that I'm mildly surprised and mildly disappointed when I'm unable to delete the page, since I don't get any log.
