Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. For the definitions of words you would do better to use a dictionary, such as this one.--Shantavira|feed me 08:40, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Some people who answer questions here are female, but I'm not aware of any females who answered recent questions. Another option is the Language Reference Desk.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:05, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Have you tried the Humanities section of Wikipedia's Reference Desk? They specialize in answering knowledge questions there; this help desk is only for questions about using Wikipedia. For your convenience, here is the link to post a question there: click here. I hope this helps. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:25, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

The tool is currently down. It has been reported at at bugzilla:72104. External tools are generally not as stable as other features. PrimeHunter (talk) 11:21, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

about debate[edit]

I am currently participating in a debate regarding an item edit. If the counterpart has not answered for a long time, can I close the debate and edit an item with my own opinion? -- JARA7979 (talk) 23:31, 16 October 2014 (KTC)

That would be extremely unwise. Instead, try contacting the person you are in dispute with directly on their talk page. If that fails, follow one of the dispute resolution procedures. SpinningSpark 19:21, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Rich Dad Education[edit]

I represent Rich Dad Education, which had a page at Rich Dad Education. That URL is now being directed to the Rich Dad Poor Dad page at: Rich Dad Poor Dad#Related business. Most likely there was confusion in whether these pages are the same, but these are two completely separate brands and entities so legally we cannot have them combined. Any help is great appreciated. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Thanksforthebreakthrough (talkcontribs) 15:08, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is an encyclopedia, not a marketing outlet so we can merge one article into a related one (as happened here) when it is appropriate to do so under our policies and guidelines. However, the merged material is more appropriate for the brand page at Rich Dad so I think the redirect should changed to point to that page.--ukexpat (talk) 15:57, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The redirect is only partly functional because the section name is "Related businesses", not "Related business". That fix is not yet in my skill set. ‑‑Mandruss (talk) 16:03, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I have moved the Rich Dad Education stuff to Rich Dad (depuffed it to) and edited the redirect accordingly.--ukexpat (talk) 16:10, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
... and I have pointed the redirect at the relevant section. --David Biddulph (talk) 16:11, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good upgrade, thanks.--ukexpat (talk) 16:46, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Baronets[edit]

Is a Baronet notable with a sole mention in Debretts or do they need multiple independent references? Thanks.Gomach (talk) 16:36, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

There is no separate guideline for baronets (Wikipedia:Notability (royalty) is a failed proposal) so you have to fall back on WP:BIO which requires multiple sources (WP:BASIC).--ukexpat (talk) 16:51, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict)IMHO no as per Wikipedia:Notability is not inherited.
So they had a famous, or possibly infamous, forbear, who was awarded a Baronetcy; but if they have not done anything to make themselves notable, they are not notable. - Arjayay (talk) 16:55, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The consensus in this kind of case is often to treat the title as notable, but not necessarily the individual holders. Individuals can only be notable in their own right, they cannot inherit the notability of the title. So the compromise for an inherited title would be to write an article about the title where the individual holders can be discussed (or just listed if there is nothing more than their listing in Debrett's). Baronetcys are fairly low down the pecking order of nobility and it is possible there may not even be enough sourced information to create an article on the title. Search for... External links to en.wikipedia.org in mainspace[edit]

First is there a tool that would enable an easy search for any external links *in mainspace* back to wikipedia *and* Second, having dealt with this with a long term abuser, is there any tool that would limit the results of the first group that contain oldid in the URL? (The Long term Abuser linked a word on a page to an external link back to Wikipedia to a version of another page that had his abuse on it.) I know about the external link checker which can be used to search for external links back to wikipedia, but I don't see how to limit it either directly *or* to use it as an import to AutoWikiBrowser. (any suggestions on better places to ask this question are welcome) Naraht (talk) 16:54, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

If the links are back to a single or couple of pages, go to those pages and "what links here"? -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:09, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Oh wait, that would catch it via url link method. Nevermind! -- TRPoD aka The Red Pen of Doom 21:10, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The LTA has done this to a few pages and I have no reason to believe that that is the entire set, which is why I would like to find these en.wp wide (if he is doing this on one of the other wp, that's another issue. :( )Naraht (talk) 21:24, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I could do a database scan for something like wikipedia.org[any characters expect spaces]&oldid=, but that would only give you the list at the time of my current database dump, 8th October. -- John of Reading (talk) 06:10, 17 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Star trek online image upload[edit]

Hello, two weeks ago I wanted to upload a banner image to the Dutch Star Trek online page but they told me over here that it's copyrighted and that I have no permission to do that because it's non free media.

So, I send and e-mail to Perfect World Entertainment with the question whether they could give me a picture that I could use on the Dutch wikipedia article on star trek online I've been working on: https://nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Star_Trek_Online .(I first send this e-mail to Cryptic studios but they told me to ask PWE) I also asked them for permission to use it. Perfect World Entertainment is the owner of Cryptic studios who is the Creator of star trek online.

Perfect World Entertainment replied to my e-mail telling me they found it awesome and appreciated it and they gave me an image with permission to use on the wikipedia article. Here's a picture for as evidence that this happened. On the left you see my email and on the right you see their reply: http://imgur.com/Ak4vB17

I tried uploading this to wikimedia commons. But I have to fill in copyright stuff. I allready looked at the options and I don't really understand it. My question is. Can someone guide me through the uploading process telling me how to fill in all the copyright and legal stuff with the information I just provided so I can upload the image PWE provided? Thanks in advance! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Maarten359 (talkcontribs) 18:27, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Permission for use just on Wikipedia is not sufficient. The copyright release must be for all purposes including commercial reuse, see Commons Licensing.--ukexpat (talk) 18:43, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Additionally, the Dutch Wikipedia is autonomous and not influenced by anything we may say here at the English Wikipedia. If you want to upload something there, it would be best to ask there for help since they would know their own policies better than most people here. Dismas|(talk) 19:26, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

A question about numbered lists[edit]

So say I have a list

  1. Item one
  2. Item two
  3. Three
  4. Four
  5. Five

Is there a way to interrupt it like this...

  1. But have this be item six?

By the way, this is for a humorous Wikipedia essay I'm writing. Thanks for any help. Howicus (Did I mess up?) 20:33, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

(edit to see how) ‑‑Mandruss (talk) 20:37, 16 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I think numbered lists are most useful when the list is subject to additions and deletions, to save having to renumber everything. If your list is pretty much static, I don't see why you couldn't just code the numbers as text, which would give you more flexibility as to the appearance. For example, the indent of the "interruption" could be made to look more like your example.

2. Item two
3. Three

There is also this... in case you were curious...
  1. Item one
  2. Item two
    1. Item two point one
  3. Item three
