Editor's Question[edit]

Hi guys,

I saw an editor with the name 2605:e000:1c0c:80f7:f813:c80f:a7bc:fc21 made a change to another editor's comment. Then the original editor proceeded to remove the entire comment a couple minutes later.

Will you explain why an IP would show up as 2605:e000:1c0c:80f7:f813:c80f:a7bc:fc21

Thanks 23:29, 25 October 2014 (UTC)

all wrong[edit]

Hi,

Dhantaras is NOT what your page explains. this is written by someone who has NO KNOWLDGE of it. I would like to re-draft it if you like.

a k — Preceding unsigned comment added by 120.61.83.155 (talk) 03:22, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia has no article titled Dhantaras. There's one named Dhanteras and one named Dhantara; I am unclear as to which article has factual errors. Perhaps if you went to the talk page of the article in question, and itemized the errors you've found, someone can help you. Talk:Dhanteras would be the talk page of the first, and Talk:Dhantara would be the talk page of the second. --Jayron32 03:31, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, most probably they are talking about Dhanteras, the festival being celebrated these days. --TitoDutta 08:56, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Printing issues[edit]

The articles such as http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binomial_distribution don't print correctly; there is something with the font of the non-'New Times Roman' characters which causes them to print as if they were stone rubbings. Why doesn't it just print on paper like I see it on the screen? Not all pages do this. 71.139.162.77 (talk) 05:49, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Are you referring to the math? Create an account and set Preferences → Appearance → MathML with SVG or PNG fallback (experimental). This looks like a much smoother rendering. --  Gadget850 talk 10:07, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

trouble logging into Wikipedia and commons[edit]

I'm having a great deal of problems getting logged into Wikipedia and Wikimedia commons. I get messages:

"login error - Wikimedia Commons uses cookies to log in users. You have cookies disabled. Please enable them and try again."

and

"login error - the seems to be a problem with your login session; this action has been canceled as a precaution against session hijacking. Go back to the previous page, reload that page and then try again."

I enabled all cookies (which I don't like to do) and I still can't get logged in. Is there some problem or is it just me? 71.199.252.230 (talk) 07:34, 22 October 2014 (UTC) user:Bubba73[reply]

  • I just tried re-logging in, but did not face the problem. You may try— a) a different web browser b) disabling extensions (or browser's safe mode) and bypassing cache. See if these help. --TitoDutta 08:54, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I've tried both Firefox and IE, but not bypassing that stuff. Does WP REQUIRE cookies? 71.199.252.230 (talk) 18:51, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I disabled all add-ons and extensions in IE, and I got logged in. Now I should be able to determine the problem. Bubba73 You talkin' to me? 19:00, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

"revision history statistics" link[edit]

the "revision history statistics" link is down,,again--Ozzie10aaaa (talk) 10:26, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Ozzie10aaaa: please report it to WP:VPT since you didn't get an answer here.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:27, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Avenel, Victoria link addition[edit]

I was wondering if we could add a link to Rusty Springs on the Avenel, Victoria page. Rusty Springs is a local B&B which has a lot of local history and a unique atmosphere. www.rustysprings.com.au

cheers

Lachlan McKenzie — Preceding unsigned comment added by 101.172.255.228 (talk) 10:36, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for coming and asking, Lachlan, rather than just doing it (which you could have done). The answer in my opinion is no: links to commercial websites (other than that of the subject of the article, if it is a company or product) are almost never allowed under the policies in external links. I also suspect from your wording, that you have a connection with Rusty Springs, in which case doing so would also fall foul of our rules on editors with a conflict of interest. --ColinFine (talk) 11:32, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Article assessment[edit]

I'm not sure if I understand how article assessment works, we have 121 Unassessed top-importance articles, do these get assessment before say a stub article? Lbertolotti (talk) 13:45, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Lbertolotti, assassment is done by interested individuals. How they find their articles differs from person to person. There is no arranged preference, but obviously anyone can decide to go over a top importance article first. You could do it yourself if you want. Simply compare an article to a projects standards. Changing Article Name[edit]

Hello,

I am working on editing the article for Addison Whitney (consultants), and I wanted to inquire about changing the name of the article.

I attempted to enter the following into the article's talk page, but was returned with an error saying I needed to use the RMassist template, which Template:RMassist must be used on Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests

Is there a different way to request or change a name?

Thank you — Preceding unsigned comment added by Enanr8 (talkcontribs) 14:41, 22 October 2014‎ (UTC)[reply]

To editor Enanr8: As the error advises, it should go on Wikipedia:Requested moves/Technical requests, not on the article's talk page. I can assist you in placing it if you provide the desired name of the article. Anon126 (notify me of responses! / talk / contribs) 15:05, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article, about a business called "Addison Whitney", is called "Addison Whitney (consultants)", presumable because Addison Whitney is a redirect to Baltimore riot of 1861. Addison Whitney is the name of one of the four soldiers killed in that riot. This seems to me unreasonable. I am rarely sympathetic to the creators of articles about businesses, particularly businesses like this one which generate nothing useful; but in this case, I believe that the redirect should be removed, and the article should have the same name as the business. Maproom (talk) 16:02, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
The article was moved 17:45, 22 October 2014. – Wbm1058 (talk) 18:47, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Anon126, Orangemike, Maproom: The touchstone of a title being at (or redirected to) a primary topic is usage, evidenced through such things as traffic and prevalence in reliable sources, but taking into account the long-term significance/educational caveat to that section. Having just done a few quick Google Books search, and looking at traffic statistics I don't think this was nearly so clear cut, despite the move already having been done. Had I reviewed the technical request I would have listed it instead for discussion. I'm not asking for anything to be done to reverse the move, mind you; there's too much for all of us to do.--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 19:02, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I think a hatnote dab to Baltimore riot of 1861 may be justified here. Rwessel (talk) 14:20, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Questions[edit]

  • Can you inform about a AFD on a wikiproject noticeboard?

Bladesmulti (talk) 16:31, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Bladesmulti,
  • any serious crosswiki content abuse can be reported at meta:Steward requests/Miscellaneous. Any non-vandalism content disputes need to be handled locally, since local communities do not alway think the same way about topics. You can inform the local communities on the local talk pages of the article.
  • as far as I know, there is no system for a global deletion. If a deletion is proposed for some reason that would influence all language versions, I would wait untill the local AFD is over, and in case of deletion you can inform other language projects about this via their WP:Embassy. Preferabky with a link to the deletion discussion, and let the local ambassadors handle things from there (or if you do not have the time or it is too wide spread, you can ask your own local ambassador for help).
All the best, Taketa (talk) 18:41, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for writing. Bladesmulti (talk) 06:10, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Title difference of opinion[edit]

There seems to be a difference of opinion over the title of the shooting event article in Ottawa. Should it be 2014 Downtown Ottawa Shooting, 2014 Ottawa Shooting, or 2014 Ottawa shooting? I do not want to get in an edit war, so I will step aside. Thank you.    → Michael J    18:14, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

@Michael J: Hi Michael J. One issue is clear: "shooting" should remain lowercase, as the title is not a proper noun. See Wikipedia:Article titles#Article title format and WP:MOSTM by analogy. Regarding the remaining main choice, this is exactly what Wikipedia:Requested moves is for but you might want to read WP:Precision first. Best regards--Fuhghettaboutit (talk) 18:29, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Mail problems?[edit]

Does anyone else have problems receiving mails over the Wiki-internal "Email user" function today or lately? I should have gotten 2 mails (one 2 weeks ago, one just now) and have none yet. I know for certain, that the function did work for me last year with the same account. Is there another good place to ask about mail-related problems (sending/receiving/technical stuff)? Please do not post your mail address in the answer (for your own sake). GermanJoe (talk) 19:59, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Hi GermanJoe, the email function is working fine for me. You can check your email settings at the top of the page at "preferences". Scroll down to see the email adres you are using and make sure you have the "allow emails from other users" button activated. If this is all fine, it might be your email spam filter, check your spam box. All the best, Taketa (talk) 20:15, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Have done both checks (should have probably mentioned it). But thank you anyway for your quick response, Taketa. GermanJoe (talk) 20:19, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
If yahoo.com email addresses are involved, then this thread is relevant. A change of policy at Yahoo in April 2014 means these email addresses don't work correctly when used via Wikipedia email. -- John of Reading (talk) 20:35, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Interesting hint, thank you. I'll ask the email sender, which type of email / provider they use. GermanJoe (talk) 20:47, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Problem solved - I wasn't aware, that I actually had two spam folders (one hidden, duh). GermanJoe (talk) 18:07, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Good to know :). All the best, Taketa (talk) 18:15, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Changing interface language for all Wikipedia language versions[edit]

I don't speak all the 287 languages Wikipedia covers, but Wikidata-related issues or cross-wiki vandalism can lead me to various other wikis. I typically navigate them by the position of buttons, but it would be useful to have a default interface language I can understand. Is there a method/script/... to change all language settings at once? --mfb (talk) 20:51, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

So you would like to have something where the button on ta.wikipedia.org would say "Save Page" rather than "பக்கத்தைச் சேமிக்கவும்"?
Right. I can change it manually for each wiki, but setting it globally somewhere or running a script would be faster. --mfb (talk) 22:14, 23 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@Mfb: a starting point would be WP:VPP.— Vchimpanzee • talk • contributions • 22:33, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Book Creator....[edit]

What happened to being able to create an ebook or ODF version using the book creator tool? Now it only allows for PDF versions....

New software has been introduced. Some things should work better but other features have been removed. See Template talk:Saved book#Template-protected edit request on 6 October 2014 and links there. PrimeHunter (talk) 22:08, 22 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
