November 21[edit]

overlinkage[edit]

I could really use some advice from an experienced editor about overlinkage. An expansion on the MOS and what people find to to be general practice, particularly within quotations, would be much appreciated. Thanks. Gabriel syme (talk) 02:42, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I assume you read the MOS on linking, "Items within quotations should not generally be linked; instead, consider placing the relevant links in the surrounding text or in the "See also" section of the article." Currently your question is a bit broad. If this section of the MOS is unclear, could you please specify the question, so I myself or another reader can give a more meaningful reply. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 12:25, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Actually, MOS:LINKSTYLE is exactly what I'm looking for, I hadn't found that page yet, and actually just now found the MOS/contents page for the first time, which is incredibly helpful. Thanks alot! Gabriel syme (talk) 17:38, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Plague of nbsp[edit]

I'm having problems editing African bush elephant. I'm attempting to edit and fix "John Hopkins University" to "Johns Hopkins University". However when I edit, even if the only thing that I do is add the s, the article is also changed by having 6 or so added. See for example https://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=African_bush_elephant&type=revision&diff=811390238&oldid=811389990 . Ideas on what's going on and how to fix it? I'm using WikEd, my normal editor and have made a number of similar edits on other articles before and since.Naraht (talk) 09:11, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

FWIW, I've no idea what was going on (as I don't use WikiEd), but I've added the absent 's' where it was missing in the Bibliography. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 94.0.37.45 (talk) 09:32, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I suffer from time to time from the same problem. I hadn't realised that it was associated with WkiEd. If you look carefully at the version before Naraht's edit you'll see that the characters are present, so I think that all that WikiEd is doing is making them visible as such. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:52, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, wikEd replaces Unicode non-breaking space characters with their html entity in accordance with MOS:NBSP. The Unicode characters were added 10 November in [1] by Abknych who maybe has software which changes two normal spaces to one space and a non-breaking space to produce more spacing. Two normal spaces render like one space in html. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:08, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for the information. So the right thing for me to do was to have seen the addition of the nbsp in what was there after I edited and simply deleted them as long as there was a normal space on one side or the other.Naraht (talk) 18:36, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, there was no reason for non-breaking spaces and I have deleted them.[2] But detecting them as Unicode characters can be difficult, and two normal spaces after punctuation is allowed by Wikipedia:Manual of Style#Spaces following terminal punctuation. Edits to Anna Friel Wikipedia (New Awards)[edit]

Hello,

Can you please update Anna Friel's page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anna_Friel) to reflect her recent win:

an Author bio[edit]

Can I have a author bio on Wikipedia? I've tried before and couldn't seem to get it right. Thank you, JD Holiday — Preceding unsigned comment added by J.D. Holiday (talkcontribs) 16:02, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Dear J.D. Holiday, to keep it short, no you cannot. Wikipedia is an enclopedia. If a subject is relevant someone else will write about it. Wikipedia is not a place for an author bio about yourself. The user page is indeed meant to write about one self, however only to help in working together with others on Wikipedia. It is not meant to promote yourself or your website. There are other social websites to post an author bio. Sincerely, Taketa (talk) 16:58, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
J.D. Holiday To put it a bit more kindly - you can if you are a notable WP:PERSON enough to be included and meet the requirements set forth by WP guidelines. As an author, you would need to have won an award of merit; or your work would have to be recognized by a distinguished media publication and covered as such in review. It would seem that your work is self-published? and mostly self-promotional, as well? This is problematic in gaining notability at WP. If you can supply notable claims that would meet the necessary requirements for inclusion at WP; you are more than welcome to submit a request for an editor to write an article here: [3]. Please note that the wait time is very long; and rejection is almost guaranteed in a situation such as this. You will also have to disclose your WP:CIO Conflict of Interest; since WP discourages any subject editing / contributing to articles about themselves. Good luck, though! Peter Kyles[edit]

1. Do you think that P. Kyle McCarter Jr. meets the notability requirements?

2. If so, do you think that it should be renamed to "Peter Kyle McCarter"? If you think so, could you possibly rename it?

3. There is a "Peter Kyle" from Scotland who won £5M in the national lottery, but 3 years later was reported to have spent it all. [4] [5] [6] Do you think he meets the notability requirements?

4. Please change Peter Kyle from a redirect to a disambiguation to (at least) Peter Kyle (footballer) and Peter Kyle (politician), if appropriate please add a link to whatever you call P. Kyle McCarter Jr. and consider redlinking Peter Kyle (lottery winner)

86.20.193.222 (talk) 17:27, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

1. No. The article cites only two sources. The first is a directory entry, the second includes a short interview with him, and tells us only that he is "one of the world’s foremost authorities on the Book of Samuel".
2. No. Those two sources refer to him as "P. Kyle McCarter" and as "P. Kyle McCarter Jr", not as "Peter Kyle McCarter".
3. I haven't checked; but probably not.
4. This seems a sensible suggestion. But I don't want to get involved making changes until we've decided whether to have an articles on the lottery winner as well. If only two Peter Kyles are to have articles, we don't need a db page. Maproom (talk) 18:29, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, I agree.
If there are only two Peter Kyle, then hatnotes would be fine; I'm not sure if that lottery one passes, so would welcome opinions to decide that.
I'll put a PROD on the first one. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 18:52, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

E-Mail visible?[edit]

Is my account's E-Mail address visible to Wikipedia administrators or anybody else (Stewards, CheckUser, Oversight, UTRS, etc.) than me? --84.147.38.84 (talk) 17:59, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

No. It's not available to those users.
Obviously, it is stored, so is theoretically available to Wikimedia Foundation employees.
If concerned, you must be very careful: if enabled, anyone can send you an email (using "email this user") - they will not be given your email address, but if you reply, they will of course be given the address that the reply came from.
See also m:Privacy_policy
Wikimedia takes privacy very seriously, and there is little to be worried about regarding your account information, although depending on your security/paranoia level, nothing is 100% secure if it is on the internet.
It's probably easier to hack Donald Trump's twitter than to steal your email addy via Wikipedia. Then again, the former has already (sorta) happened.86.20.193.222 (talk) 18:16, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Thank you for your answer, 86.20.193.222 (whoever you are). I really appreciate. You must be an experienced user (maybe even administrator) of Wikipedia. --84.147.38.84 (talk) 18:28, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Where can I ask lesser relevant or urgent questions?[edit]

Hello. HelpDesk is intended for fast questions. But where can I ask lesser important questions without bothering anybody? --84.147.38.84 (talk) 18:30, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

 • Your premise is faulty. You can ask here any question relative to how to edit Wikipedia, no matter how trivial or non-urgent, if there is no better place that you know of. If there is a better place, we will point you to it, but such redirections are part of what the HD is for. Bothering people with newbie questions is what the help desk (and the Teahouse) are for.
I mean, for really urgent questions (answer needed within the hour) the IRC chan is probably a better shot, but I do not see any question that is both really urgent and appropriate for the help desk. (See WP:EMERGENCY, WP:OVERSIGHT, etc. for examples of what is not appropriate on the HD.) TigraanClick here to contact me 18:42, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)

There are many more specific areas, but if you ask here you can be redirected - for example, if asking which sources are 'reliable' enough there is WP:RSN, if you want a graphic editing there's Wikipedia:Requested pictures, if you want to stop vandalism there's WP:AIV and literally hundreds more. If the wiki is on fire, try WP:AN. 86.20.193.222 (talk) 18:50, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Search revision history[edit]

Hello. How can I search the revision history of pages for text? I would like to find some text, that was removed because it was not sufficiently cited. I can no longer find it, but I know some words it included. One of them is "the most noticeable", as far as I can remember.

How can I find it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.147.38.84 (talk) 18:55, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

 • There might be other tools, but have you tried WikiBlame? If it fails, please report back with the page name, so that people more talented than me can check. TigraanClick here to contact me 19:00, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

information in source cited is an image[edit]

I've run into a situation where a source is cited, but the information cited is not in the text of the source, it is derived from observing a photograph in the article. Would this qualify as original research? One issue that springs to mind immediately is the fact that the image could be mirrored. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Gabriel syme (talkcontribs) 20:55, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Identify if my account is hijacked.[edit]

Hello. Web pages such as Google and Twitter offer users the ability to see the logins from IP addresses to the user account. Check user means: See who logged onto an IP address.

I would like to see, what IP addresses logged into my account. This should be possible for users also without check user permissions. Google and twitter already have these features for every user. --84.147.38.84 (talk) 22:13, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Your IP is 84.147.38.84, you are not logged in? Do you have an account? Emir of Wikipedia (talk) 22:16, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
@Emir of Wikipedia: the user is probably a sock putting out feelers through covert questions. See my comment on the other page[7] 115.79.137.39 (talk) 22:21, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging admins@Doug Weller, JamesBWatson, Materialscientist, Berean Hunter, and Zzuuzz:, there is something strange and fishy here, is it possible to check this ip? 115.79.137.39 (talk) 22:46, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Here on a completely unrelated issue but I noticed that the ip asking "Where can I ask lesser relevant or urgent questions?" above is the same as here. Hope that helps. Gabriel syme (talk) 22:54, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
There was an e-mail issue regarding a banned long-term COI sockmaster who is also from Northern Rhine-Westphalia and using the same ISP, Deutsche Telecom. Thus, the anon asking questions regarding e-mails seems quite DUCK to me. 115.79.137.39 (talk) 00:16, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Duck? What does that mean? --84.147.38.84 (talk) 00:07, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
 • The anon claims that he does not know what does WP:DUCK mean but the same anon is quite familiar with WP terminology to know WP:SUBST [8], a much lesser-known WP page. The anon is also familiar with Stewards, UTRS, etc [9]So it is quite unlikely that he really didn't know WP:DUCK. In my humble opinion, he is trying to behave like an inexperienced editor now. I am not willing to waste my time with him. I'll leave it to admins. 115.79.137.39 (talk) 00:24, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Sorry, I didn't know about WP:Duck. There are many WP: pages. How is one expected to know all of them? And If I wanted to hack Wikipedia, which I can't do without hacking skills, I would do it right now. --84.147.37.61 (talk) 05:58, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
How should I know, that you were referring to a WP page? I thought you were using a slang.--84.147.39.208 (talk) 14:26, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
 • Admins, please compare the two comments by the anon above, they contradict themselves. In the first comment, he claimed that he didn't know WP:DUCK, and in the second comment, he implied that he know the WP:DUCK, but he thought it as a slang since i did not add "WP:". The anon has changed his answer after i had added more evidences[10] on his knowledge regarding lesser-known WP pages, Stewards, UTRS, etc. 171.240.69.78 (talk) 15:58, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
Where exactly did I claim that I know WP:DUCK? I said "How should I know, that you were referring to a WP page?". --84.147.46.137 (talk) 23:00, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I just noticed that my IP address has changed overnight. I am the same person. May I ask, why everybody gets sceptical so quickly, without me doing any harm? --84.147.37.61 (talk) 06:04, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Hello. If you like, you can track me as long as you want. I won't vandalize anything. Yes, I have an account, but I am too shy to ask with it. And I have not (if then rarely) used my account since Octobre of 2015. --84.147.38.84 (talk) 23:19, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

IP addresses are sometimes dynamic, so they do not have an owner. If you are genuine, then just use your account. Dbfirs 08:21, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
You can change pasword at Special:Preferences if you worry about hijacking. At Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-echo you can select to get notifications about failed login attempts or logins from an unfamiliar device and IP address. PrimeHunter (talk) 13:28, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

OP, please see User_talk:NeilN#Obvious_sockpuppetry_is_obvious --NeilN talk to me 15:50, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

So what is the administrator test result now? Am I a hacker? Please mention more administrators (objective ones without double standards), if James Watson is inactive. Thanks. --84.147.46.137 (talk) 23:03, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
 • This person is either trolling or trying to find out information which will help him or her to avoid detection of sockpuppetry. In any case, since he or she has repeatedly indicated that he or she has an account, and is clearly using IP editing to evade scrutiny, which is against the sockpuppetry policy. I am therefore going to block the range of IP addresses which have been used. A careful check of the editing history of the IP range involved indicates that nobody else has used the range to edit in the last eighteen months, so risk of collateral damage is negligible. The editor who uses the pseudonym "JamesBWatson" (talk) 20:38, 23 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
The turkish WP user 115/171 was also anonymous. Just a side note. --2.247.241.78 (talk) 11:44, 29 November 2017 (UTC).[reply]

July 2018, revisited.[edit]

Hello. I digged into the archives to find this discussion. I am the exact same person who asked this on November 22, as you can tell from my IP address. I have been doeing some edits using my own account meanwhile, but I wanted to apologize for that bit of rudeness (if anyone reads this).
However, I am not familiar with any sockpuppet vandalism. Northrhine Westfalia is the most densely populated federal state in Germany, and Telecom resides here.
In addition, I was actually unfamiliar with WP:DUCK. --84.147.34.75 (talk) 07:16, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]
However, this turk from 171.240.69.78/115.79.137.39 obviously also has an account, because he is very familiar with Wikipedia. I got a victim of double standard here. --84.147.34.75 (talk) 07:16, 26 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

How to make template embeddable[edit]

I am trying to make {{Ordination}} embeddable in other infoboxes. I've added the child syntax and modified the abovestyle in the template's sandbox, but when I try to embed it, the template just appears smaller, inside the other infobox as a parameter, not as an embedded template. Does anyone know how to fix this? Thank you in advance. Ergo Sum 23:57, 21 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

Does WP:SUBST work? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 84.147.38.84 (talk) 00:08, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't see how that would help. Ergo Sum 01:02, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]

I have tried around with the syntax and have gotten it so that the template will embed in another template. However, the remaining problem is that I would like the header (color and text determined by abovestyle and above) to appear in a slightly modified way for when the template is embedded. Currently, I cannot get the header to appear at all when it is embedded. Does anyone have any ideas? Ergo Sum 05:46, 22 November 2017 (UTC)[reply]
