Uploading a screenshot that you took from a video game[edit]

What are the rules for uploading a screenshot (that you took) from a video game? The reason it would need to be added to an article is to show gameplay, but I'm not sure how that works since it's of someone else's work.

Thanks, --LichWizard talk 01:02, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@LichWizard: Check out the guidance at WP:SCREENSHOT. Looks like they are allowed, if the Non-Free use criteria are met.— Preceding unsigned comment added by RudolfRed (talkcontribs) April 10, 2018 (UTC)

Question[edit]

Where is a good place to go when there's a bold or possibly controversial edit you want to make to an article or template? I know there's RfC, but from what I know, that should only be used when editors have already have responded and you want a third opinion. Just a plain post on a talk page doesn't really work either, because with so many pages on Wikipedia, it's hard for Wikipedians to find every single request, and when I've done this previously, I've not gotten a response.--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 01:57, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

First I would be bold and make the edit and if reverted, then take to the talk page however if you aren't comfortable doing that, then I'd post to the articles talk page. There are normally people watching the pages that will comment but depending on how busy (watched) the page is, then it could take a few days. If the article is part of some sort of topic, you can also then link your comment on the talk page to that projects page asking for more thoughts. Lastly after that would probably be RfC. NZFC(talk) 02:23, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, thanks. Just in case it matters, the specific template is {{Uw-delete1}}. I think that the following sentence, "If this was a mistake, don't worry; the removed content has been restored" should be removed, because it makes it seem like all mistakes of reverting content removal are fixed, which is definitely not always the case. It may confuse the users into thinking that if their edit got reverted by mistake, it has definitely already been restored.--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 02:45, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Ok thats a bit different, sorry thought you were talking about an article. I wouldn't make changes to templates without discussing first. Would discuss the change here Wikipedia talk:Twinkle as that is the page for the project. NZFC(talk) 02:48, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I can't really think of any reason why it would affect the use of the template on Twinkle. What do you think would be the best place to discuss making this change?--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 02:53, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
May want to take it too the Wikipedia:Counter-Vandalism Unit as probably use the template but it is also a template that Twinkle users use a lot and even has this note If you plan to make breaking changes to this template, move it, or nominate it for deletion, please notify Twinkle's users and maintainers at Wikipedia talk:Twinkle as a courtesy, as this template is used in the standard installation of Twinkle. Thank you! on the page you linked. NZFC(talk) 02:57, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I know that twinkle users use it a lot, but I wouldn't say it's a breaking change at all - it's just removing 1 non-important sentence. Anyways, I'll start by asking on the template's talk page, and then ask on other pages if necessary.--SkyGazer 512 talk / contributions / subpages 13:02, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Weird refs[edit]

Hi. I've made a couple of couple of edits about Linda Lavin's appearance as a guest star in the TV show Bones. I tried adding references with where I found things but they come out looking weird. Help! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Eshan68 (talkcontribs) 02:40, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Eshan68, I have fixed it for you. The first is source wasn't being recognised for web references so changed it to website and dates need to be written in full so March instead of Mar. NZFC(talk) 02:59, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Not true. Full-length month names are not required (except to be consistent with other dates in the article); the issue with |date=Mar 20 2015 was that it was missing a required comma:
{{Cite book |title=Title |date=Mar 20, 2015}}Title. Mar 20, 2015.

scoopwhoop Wikipedia page[edit]

The Wikipedia page for ScoopWhoop https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/ScoopWhoop under the tab criticism states that the accusations of the former employee regarding sexual harrassment at the company wasn't corroborated by evidence incorrectly. The investigation is still pending and to pass a judgement on a matter still pending before the concerned authorities is just shoddy journalism and poor fact checking. Please remedy the situation as soon as possible before I have to initiate legal proceedings Deepak Mehar Singh Advocate for the former employee — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2405:204:3486:6273:AF45:B1D0:EF0B:9618 (talk) 03:44, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi IP, I would be careful making legal threats. NZFC(talk) 03:47, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
and see they have been blocked NZFC(talk) 03:48, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, the IP has been blocked. From a BLP point of view, the source looks reliable. The sentence may need some tweaking but should probably remain in some form as a counter-weight to the accusation. --NeilN talk to me 03:54, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Cheers NeilN, I had a look and the while the source is fine the IP is correct and the case is ongoing and the source didn't match what the sentence said, so updated it. NZFC(talk) 03:56, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Deleted Wikipedia page[edit]

Hello. This is regarding a wikipedia page I created under Rozon2000, which will always redirect me to a different article with a small section dedicated to it. When I look it up on google, the page still exists, but agian, will always redirect me. Please provide me the reason why it was deleted and how I can get it back. Cheers, Rozon2000. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Rozon2000 (talkcontribs) 04:24, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Rozon2000, your page wasn't deleted, it was redirected to here. Unless the Tornado you wrote about warranted its own article it won't be put back but instead is best left in that article that records all weather events during that period. Also, please remember to sign your posts NZFC(talk) 04:32, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This is innacurate: "Israel has confiscated 361 dunams of land from Kifl Haris in order to establish the Israeli settlement of Ariel.[21][edit]

No land was confiscated from Kifl Haris because they did not own the land and did not protest in court. The land on which the city of Ariel was built was entirely State land. That has never been contested. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 79.182.67.71 (talk) 07:18, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hello there. If your issue is about what is written in the article Kifl Haris, you may take this up at Talk:Kifl Haris by opening up a new discussion. Do keep in mind that mostly, any material within an article needs to be sourced to reliable sources. So before you open a talk page discussion on the article's talk page, you could also check the source provided within the article (at the end of the statement you mention) and see whether it matches the claimed confiscation. Thanks, Lourdes 09:18, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The source [1] from the Palestinian Applied Research Institute–Jerusalem says: "During their occupation of the Palestinian territories, Israeli Occupation Forces (IOF) confiscated 361 dunums (4% of the town's total area) in Kifl Haris to establish “Ariel” settlement". It's possible the Israeli occupiers view it differently. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:18, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references missing key[edit]

See list of errors at bottom of Collaboration in German-occupied Poland... All keys are defined in reflist, and all keys are used (mostly with {{r}}, rather than <ref>). Anyone? François Robere (talk) 09:15, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The article is using {{r}} inside <ref>...</ref>. That doesn't work. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:27, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
(edit clash) @François Robere: the problem seems to be that those refs are only called where they are nested inside other references, used for quotes. The first example is in the section "In Poland". A couple of lines down, it says "... diplomatic and propagandaistic needs,<ref>"The Germans became interested ... he ceased to be of interest to them."{{r|Garlinski|p=32}}</ref>". I have never seen nested refs like that, and I suspect it is the problem. --Gronk Oz (talk) 10:34, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I see. How would you recommend adding a quote and a citation as an endnote? François Robere (talk) 10:38, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Nevermind, I found it. Thanks! François Robere (talk) 10:42, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

<poem> and <blockquote>[edit]

I have read MOS:QUOTE but it does not provide any details of how <poem> and <blockquote> work. Where can I find details?

I reverted an edit because I was under the impression that <poem> would preserve line breaks, which is not appropriate since this isn't a poem. But before I do anything more, I want to read more about these tags. Jc3s5h (talk) 10:44, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

There is this: Help:HTML in wikitext#blockquote and mw:Extension:Poem. <blockquote>...</blockquote> has css in MediaWiki:Common.css and MediaWiki:Monobook.css.
<poem>...</poem> does preserve line breaks though a better choice for that quote would have been to use <br />.

error on page[edit]

There is an error on the page Merida, Yucatan.

The link for

Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana (UTM)

taskes you to a college in chile, not the one in Merida.

Sorry, if I had more time right now, I would fix this.

Hey Pstakem, I couldn't find the relevant article link for Universidad Tecnológica Metropolitana on Wikipedia (perhaps it doesn't have a page currently); so for now, I have removed the link. Lourdes 14:50, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Hi,

With more than 100 cultural references in the movie Ready Player One, I thought this article would be quite interesting: Cultural references in Ready Player One (film), specially to help young readers to learn more about old pop culture. Is there any chance this article could be reactivated? Or at least a chance to have a vote on it? 2001:EE0:4041:7074:407F:1F60:E55F:91A6 (talk) 14:50, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Not saying it can't come into existence, but I do question how many of the cultural references will really be noted by third-party sources in any significant manner, as discussed at WP:IPCV. I suspect if the article does leave Draft it's going to need eyes on it frequently. DonIago (talk) 15:27, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Talk:Ready Player One (film)#On cultural references We don't really want this draft. As I stated there, an external link to a "complete" list can be added. AngusWOOF (barksniff) 02:20, 14 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Ulster Scots language/dialects[edit]

I am shocked at your explanations for the perceived orgins of what is an utter bogus topic.if you properly researched this subject in Ireland you would realize that the picts/Scots were introduced to the Irish language through Irelands encroachment into Western Pictland/Scotland called Dal Riada, the whole basis of Scottish culture is derived from Ireland. This is not as relevant to the lowland Scots as it is to the rest of Scotland. The vast majority of Scottish people and planters are under the misapprehension that the Irish language spoken mainly in Western Scotland is their mother tongue, and that it is a different language unique to Scotland, how misinformed can you be. Their mother tongue is Pictish. The Irish spoken in Scotland today, allowing for small divergence over time is overwhelmingly Irish, with a smattering of old English, and Pictish. As for Dialects/languages in reference to Ulster Scots, this is an on going joke in Ireland. The claims made by those who wish to legitmise these patterns of speech as dialects are totally bogus. And utterly preposterous to suggest these accents could be considered a language. Where are you getting your information from ? It is certainly not Irish history, because it contradictory to everything that is written in the annals. So please remove these totally incorrect explanations on this subject, as it brings Wikipedia into disrepute. BTW, this is the second time I have had to bring to your attention shoddy research, on a subject. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 89.127.50.228 (talk) 19:51, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you see an error in an article, please Be Bold and fix it, making sure to cite Reliable Sources. Or, start a discussion on the article's talk page.  RudolfRed (talk) 20:02, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
If you use the phrase "mother tongue" in a non-standard sense, as you have done above, it is likely to cause misunderstanding. Maproom (talk) 21:51, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Date template[edit]

Is there a template that I can use to show the dates that an event will happen this year, next year, etc? It's a set day every year but the date changes. †dismas†|(talk) 22:40, 11 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

You are perhaps thinking of things like election day in the US which occurs first Tuesday after first Monday in November; start / end of daylight saving time (second Sunday in March / first Sunday in November – in the US, different elsewhere)? I don't know of such a template though, no doubt, one might hack something that would do the job. I imagine the template would take specific keywords plus year to identify the events for which dates are required: |event=dst start, etc.
There is {{Computus}} which will calculate the date of Easter ... maybe there are others.
Trappist the monk (talk) 00:02, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
That is what I'm asking. The example I have in my head is an event that is on the first Saturday of May every year. Which, naturally, is not always the same date every year. I'll check out that template. Thanks, †dismas†|(talk) 03:07, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

This IP which I believe is the new IP address of 68.102.39.189 IP. Has a habit of asking other users to do their bidding and when not done fast enough, being uncivil with users as per here, here or here just to find a few. They have been told a number of times about WP:CIVIL, WP:DEADLINE and WP:TOOSOON yet continue this behaviour. I'm starting to wonder if admin intervention is required. NZFC(talk) 03:17, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
In addition, the OP seems to be saying that a TV broadcast did not use new graphics as had been expected, and that Wikipedia is somehow responsible. This would seem to indicate either deficient thinking, or deficient communication. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.218.14.51 (talk) 12:42, 12 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]
