Fixing inaccurate link to wrong person[edit]

Hi,

I'm not sure what steps to take to resolve this, but My name is Chad Davidson and I'm the Cinematographer of the following film: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Angel_Rodriguez_(film)

My name is listed correctly as the Cinematographer, but it links to a completely different person, also named Chad Davidson, who is a poet and did not work on this film.

Here is my IMDB page: https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0203264/

Not sure how to fix this since the information is accurate, but the link is not.

Any assistance you could lend would be very much appreciated.

Thank you sincerely,

Chad Davidson Cinematographer NYC — Preceding unsigned comment added by Cdnyc5293 (talkcontribs) 04:21, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I've removed the link. The cinematographer does not merit his/your own article at this time, so no redlink is necessary. Clarityfiend (talk) 04:45, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Why are all my new pages drafts?[edit]

Hi, Can someone look at https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Monopterus_rongsaw please? How do I submit it to AfC?

Thanks--Boothsift (talk) 06:11, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Boothsift: You have created two draft articles using the AFC process. Good for you! Many new editors start by directly creating mainspace articles as soon as they can, and often they end up getting deleted because they don't meet our criteria. Even better, both of your articles have already been reviewed and moved into mainspace. I think this may be some sort of record, since most articles sit in the review pool for a month or more before an interested editor reviews and moves them. Welcome to Wikipedia and keep up the good work. -Arch dude (talk) 07:29, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Well done Boothsift, thanks for the new articles. Arch dude new articles about living things (animals, plants, bacteria, pond scum, etc) are; easy to write, easy to reference, and the subjects are inherently notable (because the act of defining/describing a species, even a newly discovered one, by publishing in a relevant scientific journal, creates a solid reliable source that can be used for our article). Consequently they frequently sail through AFC with perhaps only minor fixes. I wish most new editors would pick such subjects for their first articles rather than trying to promote wannabe garage bands or youtubers. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 08:47, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

User contributions of User:BrendanDouglasKearney[edit]

I came across the above user today, after an edit they had made to the page "Weird Al" Yankovic, which I reverted because it failed WP:IRS, WP:SOAP and WP:COI. After looking at their user contributions page, I can see that over the last few days they have made similar self-promotional edits to the articles David Vetter, Ai Weiwei, Leonardo da Vinci and Abraham Lincoln, and the content they have added survives in the current revisions of all these pages. I felt it would be best to ask for advice about how me or another editor should respond to User:BrendanDouglasKearney before reverting any of their other edits, as I don't want to be construed as starting a personal crusade against them, but I can't see that their current editing activity is anything other than a blatant means of self-promotion. Thanks in advance. --Jonie148 (talk) 07:12, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Jonie148: You are supposed to WP:AGF and assume the user does not know the rules. Engage the user on his talk page, politely linking to the proper policies, and ask the user to cease this activity and to self-revert the additions. I personally don't handle this too well so I would find another editor to do it. Escalate as needed, possibly the SPAM team if appropriate. -Arch dude (talk) 07:36, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Brilliant, thanks for the advice --Jonie148 (talk) 08:27, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Next steps with articel after it is in user-name-space[edit]

Hello Wikipedia-Team,

for a fried, wich works in a public relevant space (she is coach and uses an interesting mixture of methods) I would like to write a wikipedia articel about here. (As a side effect publish it "as a birthday present", because everybody can be proud, if he is meaningful for the world so that he also has an articel in the biggest free encyclopedia world wide.)

I began to write the articel, then another user copied it to my personal namespace because of a relevance question. Now I continued writing, triend to make clear that the work of the friend is relevant for Wikipedia. No I am not sure what to do next. Could someone access if the criteria is no fullfilled or which part needs to be more detailled? And how can I move then the articel back in the normal Wikipedia space?

Kind regards!

@KatrinGiselaMariaGrabe: The page you linked to is on the German version of Wikipedia; are you trying to bring it to this version(English)? If you just want to publish it on the German version, you need to speak to users there. 331dot (talk) 11:27, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
Also, KatrinaGiselaMariaGrabe, see the essay WP:PRIDE for why writing a Wikipedia article about someone might not be a very good birthday present. --ColinFine (talk) 16:04, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

The name of my Wikipedia page is incorrect[edit]

I'm the E-Commerce executive at Amman Rotana Hotel. I'm responsible for everything online and so I've noticed the hotel's name on Wikipedia is incorrect. It is listed as Rotana Amman instead of Amman Rotana. Since I have zero experience with Wikipedia, can someone walk me through changing the page's name??

Thank you. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Ammanrotana (talkcontribs) 13:43, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Ammanrotana: You asked the same question at Wikipedia:Teahouse#How can I change the name of my Wikipedia page? and it has been answered by a couple of editors. Please check that thread for reference. -- Marchjuly (talk) 14:03, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

If you compare these, by clearly concentrating on the italicized portions in the above two texts, you can see that this user is trying to add false information on the wikipedia page of Mr. Shyam Rudra Pathak and is removing valuable information as well. Further, he is concocting the existence of someone called Shri Rekha when there's no one by that name who has done anything that he (Godrik ki Kothri) is writing. The information that I had written, by seeing the history of changes, is the correct information. You shall look into this.

Somehow, this Godrik ki Kothri username bearing person/woman has also erased the following paragraph that I had written:

He also keeps erasing my corrections and tries to write that this wikipedia page is not "उल्लेखनीय" which is the hindi word for "important", He writes this on the top of the page in some kind of a boxed advertisement for a discussion that they have created somewhere on wikipedia.

Please look into it.

Thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 45.251.51.82 (talk) 14:12, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

45.251.51.82 Greetings. What you present here is India Wikipedia user and believe the article you mentioned is also from IN Wikipedia. This is English Wikipedia site, for such you need to go to IN Wikipedia to seek assistance. Thank you. CASSIOPEIA(talk) 14:22, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
CASSIOPEIA its actually the Hindi Wikipedia (hi.wikipedia.org). There's no such thing as an India Wikipedia and in.wikipedia.org does not exist - "in" is not a valid language code. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 14:37, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
We do not have an interwiki link for the Hindi help desk, so the user will need to go to the Hindi Wikipedia main page at hi:मुखपृष्ठ and navigate into their help system from there. -Arch dude (talk) 15:45, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • I have removed most of the unsourced content from the article using Google Translate. Please take up further discussions at the Hindi Wikipedia page as suggested by Arch dude. Thanks, Lourdes 15:50, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Saved articles in Wikipedia iPhone app available when logged into my browser[edit]

I have a handful of saved lists and articles (not quite sure of the difference yet), but I have all of these articles categorized in my Wikipedia iPhone app, but when I logged into my Wikipedia account using my laptop and a Chrome browser, I can't find where any of my saved articles would be. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

-Mike F. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Mikefranke11 (talkcontribs) 16:29, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@Mikefranke11: There appear to be a lot of such apps (List of Wikipedia mobile applications). I don't think we can help you here. We are knowledgable about using and editing Wikipedia, but not necessarily about Wikipedia apps. Does your app have a separate help system or documentation? -Arch dude (talk) 17:50, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
  • Mikefranke11, we might be able to help you here. The Wikipedia official iPhone app allows you to save articles and lists (read Wikipedia:What is an article? to understand the similarities and differences between the two). However, these saved articles and lists will not be visible when you log in using your desktop, as the saving option is limited to when you login using the Wikipedia app. You can, of course, sync the saved articles across your other mobile devices using the option provided in the app. Read Wikimedia Apps/iOS FAQ#Offline reading and data to understand this further. Ask here or ping me directly for more assistance. Thanks, Lourdes 18:54, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Missing page[edit]

I created a page for myself and it has magically been deleted. I've just now created a new draft and it's waiting review. Any reason my a page would be removed? I am an actor and I'm simply using this page as a reference — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babazonian (talkcontribs) 16:33, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

It was probably deleted because you don't appear to be notable enough to warrant an article, and you are writing about yourself thus have a conflict of interest. Wikipedia is not for this.
Additionally, even if reliably sourced (which it isn't) the draft article needs a lot of work before it can be considered valid - the language and tone fall way short of an encyclopaedic article, containing peacock terms and flowery prose - "acclaimed", "legendary" and "wonderful" for example.
When other people have written about you, somebody else may decide an article is warranted, but until then - nothing to show. Chaheel Riens (talk) 17:07, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@Babazonian: Please read WP:AUTOBIOGRAPHY (i.e., don't do this). Also read WP:PRIDE (i.e., be careful what you wish for.) -Arch dude (talk) 17:42, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Helpful , understandable, thanks so much — Preceding unsigned comment added by Babazonian (talkcontribs) 17:46, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

(edit conflict)@Babazonian: You can find the discussion about deleting the article here. It's one of the shorter and less illuminating deletion discussions I've seen. It boils down to the fact that James Babson doesn't seem to meet the criteria listed here. Moreover, the article was not supported by sufficient sources that discussed Mr. Babson's life and career. Lastly, if you are Mr. Babson, you shouldn't write about yourself. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 17:52, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Help:Cite errors/Cite error references missing group[edit]

I am trying to nest SFN notes into some EFN notes. The last SFN invariably produces the error "Cite error: A list-defined reference named FOOTNOTE___ is not used in the content (see the help page)", even though that is not the case. The SFN is written correctly in the content, and the citation is also correct. When I try to cite the same source a second time, with different page numbers, those also fail. Nesting footnotes is not ideal, but when it’s needed, it ought to work. This question does not pertain to a current, active edit for any particular article. MonteGargano (talk) 23:17, 16 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

@MonteGargano: Please post the broken code or a link to an example. We are not psychic. PrimeHunter (talk) 00:16, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
The error came up as I was trying to make some changes. It is not an error on an existing page. I was hopeful this was a known error and there might be a fix. I guess not. You can easily reproduce the error by adding and EFN and then putting a SFN into it, then showing a preview. It has failed for me on numerous articles from several different computers. MonteGargano (talk) 00:51, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
I finally found the answer. In order for a SFN to appear within a EFN, the EFN has to be written entirely within the paragraph, along with the SFN. You cannot use the more helpful format of efn|name = ABC, with the SFN in the notelist at the bottom of the test.
The correct format is given in one of the examples in “Help:Shortened footnotes”, but without a clear explanation that sfn does not work correctly within the notelist. Most frustratingly, SFN sometimes DOES work within notelist, which leads to the incorrect assumption that one′s citation is written incorrectly. MonteGargano (talk) 01:23, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MonteGargano: If you have the time, it would be very helpful if you update that help page to include your findings. You went tio a lot of effort and it would be a pity to lose that knowledge. -Arch dude (talk) 01:32, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
@MonteGargano:Your section heading refers to Help:Cite errors/Cite error references missing group but the error message you quote, "Cite error: A list-defined reference named FOOTNOTE___ is not used in the content (see the help page)" is the one from Help:Cite errors/Cite error references missing key. The error is documented on that latter page. Did the blue link from the error message take you to the wrong help page? -- John of Reading (talk) 06:19, 17 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]
