December 26[edit]

Converting a bunch of references to use templates[edit]

On 2016 deaths in American television, I noticed that a notable number of the 198 references are made from a format like, for example:

<ref>[http://www.advocate.com/transgender/2016/9/08/lady-chablis-trans-icon-and-savannahs-grand-empress-dead-59 "Lady Chablis, Trans Icon and Savannah's Grand Empress, Dead at 59"] {{Webarchive|url=https://web.archive.org/web/20191017211312/https://www.advocate.com/transgender/2016/9/08/lady-chablis-trans-icon-and-savannahs-grand-empress-dead-59 |date=2019-10-17 }} from ''The Advocate'' (8 September 2016)</ref>

This is a fine format, except it doesn't use a template. Templates are really good for making stuff easy to edit, and when edited update a bunch of pages at once, and are good for keeping stuff consistent. Is there any tool I can use to quickly convert references in an article into templates, like how the Visual Editor can with only a link or like how Refill can take a bare reference and turn it into a template in a browser? Thanks! DemonDays64 (talk) 04:25, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@DemonDays64: You'll want to discuss it at WT:WikiProject Death first. The small group of editors that work on pages like Deaths in 2019 seem to be against use of templates for refs. I suspect the page you are discussing is maintained by the same editors. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 05:39, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
The content actually came from 2016 in American television, but I'm not sure if they had the same objections or not. Onetwothreeip (talk) 05:50, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@AlanM1: huh, any link to info about why they dislike them? Thanks, DemonDays64 (talk) 05:53, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@DemonDays64: It's in the FAQ at Talk:Deaths in 2019, though the reasoning there is somewhat misleading, as the template is processed when the page is rendered into the cache (AFAIK), not when it is "loaded" by readers. Use search if you want to find the arguments, or ask at the talk page, but (based on experience) wear some flame-proof clothing. —[AlanM1(talk)]— 06:02, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also, DemonDays64, please look at WP:CITEVAR, where it says "Editors should not attempt to change an article's established citation style merely on the grounds of personal preference, to make it match other articles, or without first seeking consensus for the change"; and, later "[avoid] adding citation templates to an article that already uses a consistent system without templates, or removing citation templates from an article that uses them consistently;". --ColinFine (talk) 11:32, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Audio[edit]

How can I listen to an article, rather than reading it? Or both, read while listening to it? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 22nefi (talkcontribs) 12:24, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

22nefi, some articles have a recording made by Wikipedia:WikiProject Spoken Wikipedia. There is a list of articles that have been recorded here Wikipedia:Spoken articles.
You may also be able to use text to speech software to read any webpage, including Wikipedia. These might be a bit robotic, but would work. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:12, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Submitting a new article for review[edit]

Hi,

I'm new to Wiki. Created my first entry and would like to publish it. I have tried to follow Wiki step by step guide to create a page and submit it for review. Tried many suggestions from FAQs on how to submit a page for review but was unsuccessful in making it happen so now asking help desk.

Can you point me to a good step by step resource guide for creating and entry in Wiki and submitting it for review so it can be published

Thanks much

Spence — Preceding unsigned comment added by Spenymo (talkcontribs) 14:56, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Spenymo You can submit a draft using Articles for creation; however, if you were to submit your draft at this time, it would likely be rejected. You would need to show that this term you are writing about is in widespread use and is discussed in independent reliable sources. Please see WP:NEOLOGISM. You may also wish to read Your first article. 331dot (talk) 15:13, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Spenymo, If you're asking about User:Spenymo/sandbox, it will not be published, as it is not an encyclopedic article.
Per WP:NOTNEO we generally don't host articles about neologisms, unless there is significant coverage of the use of the Neologism in reliable sources. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:15, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Wikitionary would describe your new word as a Wikt:protologism and would not accept an entry until you can show that it has been used in three independent sources spanning at least a year. You are welcome to add it to Wikt:Appendix:List of protologisms if you so wish. Dbfirs 18:20, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

As earning source[edit]

Are wikipedia editors paid for their work? Although I know it's a nonprofit organisation but just for curiosity.🤔🤔(223.230.172.15 (talk) 15:24, 26 December 2019 (UTC))[reply]

Nope. The only people getting paid are in the Foundation, and for legal reasons the Foundation aren't involved in content. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:29, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
To expand on previous, the Foundation owns the trademarks and the servers, and generally manage fundraising, and legal matters etc, whilst the volunteer community manage the actual content of the encyclopedia. ~~ OxonAlex - talk 15:33, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) (x2) No; all editors here are just volunteers, same as yourself and their time is often limited. As mentioned to you previously, Wikipedia has no panel of editors readily available to fulfil your editing requests. Eagleash (talk) 15:35, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
We cannot prevent editing by people who edit as part of their job or who get paid by others to edit, but we can and do try hard to constrain and regulate this practice. If you do this without disclosing it, you are in violation of the terms of service of this web site and you are thereby technically committing a "theft of services". See WP:PAID. That's about the best we can do, and it's a lot better than almost any other information source. -Arch dude (talk) 17:27, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Leela52452: Try asking at WP:VPT, where technical issues are discussed. RudolfRed (talk) 20:57, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

cant work out how to do anything, find your site so difficult to use — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kingralf123 (talkcontribs) 17:33, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Kingralf123: To get started, check out the WP:TUTORIAL and the interactive learning game WP:ADVENTURE. If you have a specific question, come back here and ask it. RudolfRed (talk) 17:40, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Kingralf123: Wikipedia is an encyclopedia. You use it to find information by putting a search item in the search box at the top right on any page, and by reading the articles and following the blue links to other articles. If you wish to contribute encyclopedic content to our encyclopedia, then the tutorial is a good place to start. -Arch dude (talk) 19:24, 26 December 2019 (UTC)[reply]
