Editing or Adding Entries in Foreign Language Wikipedias[edit]

Hi!

As an occasional Wikipedia contributer, I was approached by the estate of the late singer-songwriter Andrew Gold regarding the addition of his Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Andrew_Gold) to foreign-language Wikipedias where it is not already available. There was specific interest in the geographical areas where he had success as a pop musician and/or producer. For instance, he has had a notable career in Japan as a solo artist and producer, but there does not appear to be a Wiki page devoted to him. Also, an inquiry was made about expanding the Andrew Gold pages in the French and Italian Wikipedias to be as informative as the English-language entry.

What is the protocol for this sort of thing?

Movieola (talk) 02:36, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi Movieola. The English Wikipedia translation guide (for translating to English)can be found at Wikipedia:Translation, and the key things are to proofread things and provide copyright attribution. Things should be pretty similar elsewhere, but the other language Wikipedias are all run independently of English so for specific policies you'll have to look them up at the project you're translating to. The other guides, if they exist, should be found in the languages section on the left sidebar, and if they don't exist, you may want to ask at the target project (or just go ahead and translate). Hello, Movieola. The other thing to note is that, because you are proposing to do something at the request of the subject, English Wikipedia would regard you as having a WP:conflict of interest, and would expect you to read that link and follow its advice. Each language Wikipedia is a separate project, so their rules might be different; but I advise you to check in each one before you work on the article in it --ColinFine (talk) 13:35, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, ColinFine. For the record, the estate did not request that I do anything. I have done some editing on the Gold Wiki page as someone knowledgable about his work, and wanted to confirm some information about the late performer's career, so I contacted one of the estate's reps who then inquired if and how Wiki pages were translated into other languages. Sorry for any confusion. Movieola (talk) 22:52, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikitube[edit]

How to start Wikitube, a video sharing website similar to Youtube, allowing all content to be copied and reused like Wikipedia.

Hmht45tgree3d (talk) 06:11, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hmht45tgree3d, are you saying that Wikitube is already a thing and you want to write an article about it? If that's the case, see Wikipedia:Article creation
Or are you saying that you want to start this project? Wikimedia Commons already exists for this, though it only allows videos smaller than 100MB, if I recall correctly. Or, if you're asking about setting up such a site yourself, I would point to mw:Manual:Installation guide or mw:Hosting services, depending on whether you have a server or not. Eman235/talk 06:37, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I mean a website look like Youtube, but all content can be freely reusable, like CC-by-sa or public domain, of course , I can upload several hour of video that my original work, e.g. entire route scenic view where I traveled from Los Angeles to San Francisco that recorded I use dashcamHmht45tgree3d (talk) 06:49, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
or I become a Wikituber that act as Youtuber, the only difference is all my content like all videos in my channel are free (liberty) to copy, modify, and distribute, like GPL, Creative commons etc.Hmht45tgree3d (talk) 06:51, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hmht45tgree3d, I believe YouTube itself allows you to license your videos under a CC-BY license. If you don't want to use YouTube, though (and there are plenty of reasons not to), you might try a MediaGoblin site. As far as I know, Goblin Refuge is the only instance currently open for registration. Eman235/talk 07:14, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks, Wikitube, The free video sharing site, of course, the "free" mean freedom as like "free speech", where all video in the entire site are copylefted--- anyone can copy, modify, and distribute, without any permission needed. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Hmht45tgree3d (talkcontribs)
If you want it to be a Wikimedia project then there are problems. See meta:Proposals for new projects#Notes to consider. A video sharing website would require a lot of bandwidth if it becomes popular. The Wikimedia Foundation does not want advertising. It's an American non-profit and charitable organization. Wikimedia Foundation#Finances: "The Wikimedia Foundation relies on public contributions and grants to fund its mission. It is exempt from federal income tax and from state income tax. It is not a private foundation, and contributions to it qualify as tax-deductible charitable contributions." It would probably be unacceptable to use large donor resources on random videos like YouTube. PrimeHunter (talk) 12:10, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Anote Tong[edit]

Hello! I'm trying to make former Kiribati President Anote Tong a Good Article but there's a problem with ref number 8 I cannot fix. Could anybody help me please? Kind regards! -- --LLcentury (talk) 12:48, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hi LLcentury, it looks like two different sources at Anote Tong have been given the same name. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 13:02, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
LLcentury, I've fixed it by renaming your addition <ref name=baltimoresun/>. Could you make sure that these are indeed instances where you are citing the Baltimore Sun and not RNZI? – Þjarkur (talk) 13:03, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, I'm working hard, I have a further question, though short article, if well-sourced, could it be nominated for GA?. Thanks! --LLcentury (talk) 13:05, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Getting help reviewing a draft page[edit]

Conv. link: Draft:YallPolitics

I have started a draft page for a publication in my local area called "YallPolitics". How do I get someone to help me review/edit so that it conforms? — Preceding unsigned comment added by KineticIntern (talkcontribs) 12 May 2019 13:59 (UTC)

Hello, KineticIntern . When you want to try the really quite difficult task of creating a new article (I always advise new editors to get a few hundred edits under their belt improving existing articles before they even try it), absolutely the first thing to do, before trying to write a single word of the article, is to find the (at least two, but preferably at least three) sources where somebody unconnected with the subject has chosen to write at some length about the subject, without any input, prompting, or involvement of the subject (what we call an independent reliable source). If you can't find these sources, then the subject is not currently notable (in the special way that Wikipedia uses the word), and any further work you do towards the article is probably wasted.
I see that you have three references in your draft. Unfortunately, none of them meet these criteria. The Columbia Journalism Review is itself a reliable source, but the (short) piece you cited is entirely derived from Lange, so is not independent. I'm not quite sure about the second one, but if I'm reading correctly, that is simply an aggregator that counts likes on social media, not an evaluation by a person (let alone an expert). Wikipedia does not regard that as a reliable site (and in any case, popularity is not directly relevant to notability). The third source is Yallpolitics itself, so that is not independent.
Y'all Politics may be notable - I haven't looked. But you haven't so far done anything to establish that it is.
Sorry if this comes over as discouraging: actually I wish that so many new editors wouldn't rush to write new articles. It is hard, and many of our six million existing articles could do with some TLC.
If you haven't already, please read your first article and verifiability as well as the links above. --ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Table help[edit]

Hi Folks, How do you put two image side by side within a table cell, re: Telford Parliamentary church, the ones in the cell on the Acharacle row. I have tried putting a separate table in. Thanks. scope_creepTalk 17:02, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I have placed the images on the same source line to let the browser choose how to render them.[1] Don't try to force them to always render on the same line. If the table is too wide for the screen then it's better to allow rendering below.
Never use leading spaces on a line unless you want the special formatting it causes like here.

Closing AfD for Chase Strangio[edit]

I'm not a new user but after reading through WP:AFD I can't figure out where to ask this, so coming here. Wikipedia:Articles for deletion/Chase Strangio has been open for over seven days with only one comment (from myself, the article creator). I don't think the nominator listed the AfD correctly. In any case, it could use administrator attention. Thanks! Funcrunch (talk) 17:45, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

You are correct that the nominator did not list the AfD correctly. I've fixed the problem and relisted the nomination, so it gets seven days properly listed. * Pppery * survives 18:00, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Searching for females who prefer "actor" to "actress"[edit]

A reader wrote to Wikimedia ticket:2019050610003325 with the observation that Helen Mirren is identified as an actor rather than an actress.

One of the archived talk posts suggests that this is her preference (although I don't see a citation).

This led to the question whether there are other female actor/actresses who prefer "actor", and whether there is any way of searching for this in Wikipedia.

In theory, this should be a job for wiki data because there is a field for gender and one could do a search for gender equals female and occupation equals actor. However, it appears that wiki data uses the occupation "actor" for both actors and actresses (I think, I may be missing something).

Back to Wikipedia, I suppose it is possible to do a search for both "female" and "actor", but that seems like a crude way of doing the search.

Does anyone have any thoughts on how we could track down whether there are other women described as actors in Wikipedia?--S Philbrick(Talk) 18:54, 12 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]

But the there is no evidence given why 'actor' was wrong in the ticket, only bare assertion. Actor is a valid term for both sexes and there's no reason why Wikipedia should prefer actress over actor (not that I mean use of 'actor' should be enforced). In fact 'actress' is considered obsolete by some style guides like that of the UK's Guardian which grouped it in the same class as 'authoress' and 'comedienne.' Also this Ngram's chart confirms diminishing usage of the female-specific term. So we have to consider that before searching all female articles using 'actor' and of course before attempting to "correct" them. – Ammarpad (talk) 04:36, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Ammarpad, The reason to search for them wasn't to "correct" them; I haven't even thought through what our standard should be — the reason for the search is to gather some evidence — to find out what is being done in practice in Wikipedia.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:12, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Sphilbrick: I understand your point. Now on how to find articles of women using "actor" I'd say I don't really know. – Ammarpad (talk) 21:56, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Answering first the unasked question of what designation should Wikipedia use for the profession, I would say: if the person has expressed a preference either way, follow it, and for the others go have a fight for your preferred version at WP:MOS before starting large-scale corrections.
As for the real question of how to search... Clearly Help:Searching offers better possibilities than a raw keyword search, but I failed in my attempts. For instance: ideally you would use deepcategory:Actors but that category has so many subcategories it does not work. TigraanClick here to contact me 09:13, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Tigraan, Again, something about how I phrased my question gave the impression that my goal was to engage in large-scale "corrections", but that's not the case. I'm simply asking on behalf of the person who wrote to Wikimedia. They wondered how often this happened, and I realized I didn't quite know how to figure out the answer.--S Philbrick(Talk) 13:17, 13 May 2019 (UTC)[reply]
