Using a lecture as a cited source[edit]

If a notable person gives a lecture in a public forum telling about his life, can this be considered a reliable source? We are talking about information not likely to be contested, such as who influenced him, etc. Is it considered "original research"? What if the lecture is not published in print, but the audio is recorded (and thus verifiable)? Is there a citation template for a lecture? Thank you, Eagledj (talk) 00:48, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

sorry — Preceding unsigned comment added by Lamp123kid (talkcontribs) 00:49, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Lamp123kid. We require that the source be published (so that in principle, anybody can get hold of a copy - though it doesn't have to be easy, or free of charge) reliably (so it's not just a random person - or even the lecturer - putting it up on their personal blog or website). But if it meets those requirements, then yes, it can be cited as a source. I don't think there is a policy which says whether to cite the lecture or the transcript (or both) in that case. You can use templates such as {{cite journal}} and {{cite video}}. --ColinFine (talk) 01:06, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • @Eagledj: Hello, Colin has replied to your question but a less than helpful interloper has confused the issue. Eagleash (talk) 04:50, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

I need some help with Draft:Adam Dahlberg. There's an error in the references saying the invoked ref hasn't been defined, even though it has... I can't seem to find what's wrong, could someone please fix it? Thank you in advance. Melofors (talk) 01:31, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Cured in this edit; simply a missing equals character in the ref definition. --David Biddulph (talk) 01:41, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edits in your bio[edit]

Donal Logue (edit | talk | history | protect | delete | links | watch | logs | views)

I notice a lot of activity in my bio that removes important information or reports erroneous stuff. It takes away any reference to my living in Nogales, Arizona and El Centro, California. Going to School in England, (St. Ignatius College) winning the American Legion Boys' nation Presidency in 1983 (it links to American Legion Boys' Nation)

the same people jump on board and tear up my bio. I contribute financially to wiki but I'm starting to get frustrated with the open door policy donal logue — Preceding unsigned comment added by Donallogue (talkcontribs) 03:34, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Donallogue: Hello, according to your contrbutions, you have not edited the page since 2012. There were a number of unconstructive changes made to the page in October 2019 and these were quickly dealt with as vandalism and the page restored to a stable version. If you have changes you would like to see made to the article please make requests on its talk page and provide reliable sources. See Template:Request edit for instructions. Please also read WP:COI and make the necessary disclosures. (Please remember to sign your posts on talk pages by typing four keyboard tildes like this: ~~~~. Or, you can use the [ reply ] button, which automatically signs posts.) Thank you. Eagleash (talk) 04:41, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Donallogue:, please also note that even if it you were to add such material, it ought to and probably would be removed unless it was cited to a published Reliable source independent of yourself. All facts in Wikipedia must be verified by such citations so that readers can confirm for themselves, if they wish, that they are not inventions inserted by mischievous third parties pretending to be you: such things do happen here. Things that you know but are not published are inadmissable, because readers cannot consult your mind to confirm them. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 2.217.209.178 (talk) 17:02, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
@Donallogue: Do you have anywhere else where we can read about the things you want added to the article? If you have a source we can use for reference, that would be really helpful. --Jayron32 17:04, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Adding a new article on wikipedia[edit]

Good Day Wikipedia team,

I wanted to find out how i can go about adding an artist bio on wikipedia? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Naye Ayla (talkcontribs) 08:51, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Naye Ayla. Writing a new article is one of the hardest tasks on Wikipedia, and I always advise new editors to spend a few weeks or months improving some of our six million existing articles before they try it, so they can learn how Wikipedia works and what not to do. If you do write an article about the artist, remember, that it must be almost entirely based on what people unconnected with the artist have chosen to publish about them (Wikipedia is not interested in what the artist says about themselves, or what their associates say - and that will include any galleries or exhibitions who have shown them), and it must be neutral in tone, not promotional in any way. If there is not enough independently published material about them, then they do not meet Wikipedia's criteria of notability, and no article on them will be accepted however it is written. But if you want to try it, please start by reading your first article.
Two more caveats: if you have come here because you want to tell the world about the artist, or to help improve their online presence: that is promotion, and is incompatible with the purposes of Wikipedia. And if the artist in question is yourself, please note that autobiography is very strongly discouraged. --ColinFine (talk) 10:00, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Help on deletion process[edit]

Hi all, I have proposed via TW for a page to be deleted, but I do not see that nomination listed at today's articles for deletion log. Did I do something wrong? Will a bot list it some time later? Thanks. Cinadon36 09:16, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Cinadon36: Twinkle's edits were correct. You have tagged the article for "uncontroversial" deletion via the Wikipedia:Proposed deletion process, whereas the "articles for deletion" log is for articles where the deletion needs discussion, using the Wikipedia:Articles for deletion process. -- John of Reading (talk) 09:32, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you John of Reading, I think now I did it the proper way. Cheers. Cinadon36 14:23, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Edit help[edit]

I have made Plot summary for Blaze (2018 film). When I went back to edit the second paragraph, the new type characters fill in about seven spaces back. I have two sentences to add but there seems to be a blank space I cannot type. I closed the article to go back in and that did not help. Please go to the article to see my problem. There is some kind of code in the text. The delete key keeps backing more text out. Thanks. Eschoryii (talk) 10:02, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@Eschoryii:  Fixed... space removed; you'll need to edit the text to what you were wanting to say. Eagleash (talk) 10:13, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Hello, Eschoryii. I have often had that problem with the source editor: it is clearly a bug, but I haven't looked to see if anybody has reported it (I guess they must have, but a quick search of WP:VPT didn't seem to show anything). I just ignore it, and work round it. --ColinFine (talk) 10:16, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your help and quick response. I completed the plot summary. Eschoryii (talk) 14:43, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

List of postage stamps of Pakistan[edit]

List of postage stamps of Pakistan appears on the list of April Articles Requiring a Copy Edit list at the Community Portal. April and several other months are being "cleaned up" by a GOCE backlog blitz. I am in the process of editing this article, however, there is no "Copy Edit" tag on the article that I can find. I'm not sure how to "remove" it from this list in this case. Normally, once the "Copy Edit" tag is removed it "disappears" from the list. Thanks, Twofingered Typist (talk) 13:02, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The one which is on the Category:Wikipedia articles needing copy edit from April 2019 list is List of postage stamps of Pakistan from 1967 to 1976, which does have the CE tag. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:21, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Found it, thanks!! Twofingered Typist (talk) 14:46, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Changing UK/US spelling in quotations[edit]

This edit changed "normalising" to "normalizing" - but note that it happened within a WP:QUOTE. I find this to be a tampering of what was actually said, albeit a very minor one. Does this violate any established Wikipedia policy? Otherwise, is this kind of edits normally allowed? (Please ping me when replying) —Srid🍁 14:18, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

It's worth following the link to the ref, where you can see that "z" was used. --David Biddulph (talk) 14:56, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Pinging Sridc to the above reply, and while I am here, WP:ENGVAR is the operating guideline and mentions explicitly to keep the original spelling. TigraanClick here to contact me 15:34, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Also the use of "z" is NOT specifically a US spelling. It is an alternative spelling in the UK and is in fact the spelling recommended by the Oxford Dictionary.--Shantavira|feed me 09:08, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Google translate[edit]

Can you allow google translate because Traditional Chinese is too short or no Traditional Chinese page? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Kikiwong0818 (talkcontribs) 14:19, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

The guideline is "Avoid machine translations". --David Biddulph (talk) 14:52, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Secueity restriction[edit]

Please undo the security certificate requirement. An encyclopedia should be easy access.

Those of us on old browsers are not always able to upgrade the browser easily.

Why make it so hard to get info?

Thanks — Preceding unsigned comment added by 218.111.12.190 (talk) 16:38, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia is run by the Wikimedia Foundation which decided in 2015 to only use https.[1] I read this help desk daily and don't recall another complaint. Which browser and version are you using? Are you unable to access all https sites? That's a large part of the Internet. PrimeHunter (talk) 17:27, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
First of all, please note that this is just what I think is going on from what I know about security certificate. We require a certificate to make sure that the data being sent back and forth will not be intercepted and changed. This is done for your safety, you can override this in the same way you did to post this question. There might be someone else who could answer better, but i hope this answered your question. LakesideMinersCome Talk To Me! 17:34, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
  • Obviously, if you could post here, you managed to work it out somehow.
If it was possible to access Wikipedia via HTTP, it would be possible (for instance) for the Chinese government to alter how pages pertaining to the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests appear.
Is it a price worth paying to maintain HTTP compatibility? From a quick search it seems that Firefox and Google Chrome have been supporting HTTPS since at least 2011. I doubt the other browsers (Safari, Opera, IE) were behind by much. Browsers without HTTPS support are not "old", they are ancient, and dangerous to use because of unpatched vulnerabilities. Italic title[edit]

Minor coding issue: I cannot figure out why the page title for Aleluya (En La Tierra) is half in italics and half not. I tried the "Italic title" template but it did not work. That is the full title of the album and it should all be in italics. Thanks. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 20:17, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting question. The Infobox album should italize it automatically. I will be interested to see if someone can tell us why it is not working fully in this case. I even tried italic_title=force and no luck. RudolfRed (talk) 20:27, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
I did not consider a possible problem with the infobox. If that is the issue, I have also inquired at Template talk:Infobox album. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 20:34, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Done An editor named PrimeHunter has fixed it. Not sure why it didn't happen automatically, but all is well. Thanks. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 20:39, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
It was fixed with {{Italic title|all=yes}} combined with |italic_title=no in the infobox to avoid a clash.[2] {{Italic title}} and infoboxes which add italics assume by default that text in parentheses is disambiguation, e.g. "(album)", and should not have italics. This is probably right more than 99% of the time. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:44, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Just the search hastemplate:"Infobox album" intitle:album gives 55000 hits where nearly all would be wrong if the whole title had italics. Man, we have a lot of album articles with disambiguation. PrimeHunter (talk) 20:49, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for the information. I suspected something involving parentheses and disambiguation but my technical knowledge of template operations is pretty weak. ---DOOMSDAYER520 (Talk|Contribs) 22:31, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Do libraries have any special notability rules? What notability requirements apply to them?[edit]

Mulling over the idea of a draft on my local library, making absolutely sure it'd actually be notable for wikipedia. --MoonyTheDwarf (Braden N.) (talk) 21:21, 12 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Apart from GNG, WP:NORG and/or WP:NBUILD could apply. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 07:16, 13 November 2019 (UTC)[reply]
