Question about JS[edit]

Resolved

Is all mobile JavaScript/CSS disabled? I made a script that adds links to a sidebar, but it does not seem to run on mobile devices unless if I put the device on desktop view. I remember that it is possible to have mobile CSS/JS enabled, but I cannot figure out how to get it back. Was this changed as an update? Aasim 00:02, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's not the case that JavaScript/CSS are disabled, but rather that the mobile site shows a different skin by default. See Wikipedia:Mobile access. Haven't dug into the skin details, but your script is presumably adding elements to a non-existent sidebar, so they aren't displayed. --47.146.63.87 (talk) 00:28, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
This is not 100% correct. The technical name for the mobile skin is , AFAIK, Minerva. Mobile pages don't transclude Special:MyPage/common.js by default. Instead, you have to include all scripts from Special:MyPage/Minerva.js. Secondly, if you attempt to add something to a nonexistent element in any modern browser, it will throw a TypeError presumably saying something like "theParent is null". Victor Schmidt mobil (talk) 04:58, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Bare in mind there is both a "desktop version" on both wikipedia, and likely the browser (which are different). If you select desktop view at the bottom of the page, you'll get the scripts from the above. To show in the mobile view, you need to use Minerva (which also has some limitations). Best Wishes, Lee Vilenski (talkcontribs) 13:57, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I tried the minerva skin (with iusc("User:Awesome Aasim/common.js")) and it did not work. The main issue I have is that in the dev console it says "importScript is not defined" on mobile. Aasim 17:04, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Awesome Aasim: I think the preferred method is

mw.loader.load( '/w/index.php?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&title=User:Awesome Aasim/somescriptname.js' );

—[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:07, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Thanks AlanM1. I added the lines
function importScript(location) {
	mw.loader.load( '/w/index.php?action=raw&ctype=text/javascript&title=' + location);
}
to my common.js file and it is all working now :) can someone close this thread now? :D Aasim 06:27, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

User talk archive[edit]

Resolved

Greetings, keepers of the eternal flame!

I recently attempted to make a new manual archive of my talk page, namely User talk:MinorProphet/Archive 5. I probably did something wrong, and consequently the links in the archive box have become unclickable. It was (sort of) working until my last edit on my main talk. Any chance that someone could fix it please, and perhaps explain what I might have done wrong? Cheers, >: MinorProphet (talk) 03:09, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Investigating. CJK09 (talk) 03:11, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Fixed. The de-indent was doing something to mess it up, I'm not sure exactly what. Maybe someone more knowledgeable on CSS could chime in. CJK09 (talk) 03:14, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
 Fixed in record time. Thank you. >: MinorProphet (talk) 03:26, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Although I class myself as a blithering idiot in these matters, it seems possible that {{Outdent}} expects some following text, which probably breaks something else into the bargain. MinorProphet (talk)
This is what you get when editor-pond-life starts reading the manual. >: MinorProphet (talk) 13:53, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
So, I took the question to Template talk:Outdent, where Primefac fixed the underlying problem. Once again, thanks to all concerned. MinorProphet (talk) 21:16, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

This page has misinformation and religious bigotry. Can you remove the access protection on this page so that others can modify it. Can you also ban the users who have created false content on this page. — Preceding unsigned comment added by OT7702 (talkcontribs) 08:29, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Talk:Jai Shri Ram is the place to discuss this, and editors aren't going to get banned for having a different opinion. Joseph2302 (talk) 08:38, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Zulekha Daud[edit]

Resolved

Hi, As you can see the subject you can understand whom I'm talking about. Zulekha Daud is one of renowned physician and businessperson in Dubai. As per article says that she opened a hospital in Nagpur named "Alexis Multi speciality Hospital " in 2016. In the article "Life and Career section" the hospital name is mentioned as "Alexis" but in "occupation" column(bio infobox)it is mentioned as "lexis". In fact there is no any reference given related to this hospital. So, it's really difficult to understand which name is true " Alexis " or "lexis". Thanks.(223.230.160.253 (talk)

You can ask about this at Talk:Zulekha Daud. -- Hoary (talk) 13:11, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please forward this query to the article Talk page. (223.230.160.253 (talk) 13:23, 22 April 2020 (UTC))[reply]
It was a typo, introduced in this edit. I have fixed it. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 14:46, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Request moving page 'EDF Luminus'[edit]

Wrong venue. Please move to Talk:EDF Luminus

The title of this wikipedia page (EDF Luminus) is not up to date. It should be 'Luminus' because of the name change in April 2019. Could an experienced editor look into it? I have neither the rights nor the experience to successfully move a page.

Thanks in advance LumComm (talk) 15:17, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

LumComm, Could you provide a reliable source that says as such? Also, this account seems to be from the company in question, which raises two issues. First, your edits are conflict of interest, and may violate our terms on paid editing. Secondly, accounts are single use only. You may need to change your name to something more appropriate, such as "Todd at Luminus" CaptainEek Edits Ho Cap'n! 15:48, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@LumComm: The proper place to discuss your proposal to rename the EDF Luminus article is the article talk page at Talk:EDF Luminus, where you could disclose any conflict of interest. As CaptainEek recommended, I suggest you provide a reliable source for the name change. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 15:56, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Where should I upload sources?[edit]

Resolved

I am with a GLAM institution, the Nasher Sculpture Center. We are looking at different ways to work with Wikipedia including hosting edit-a-thons and sharing open access content to the Commons. To get familiar with the platform, we are adding suggestions to our talk page and would like to upload our press archive for use as sources. I am not sure, though, where those documents should be uploaded. Do these articles belong in Commons, WikiSource, WikiLibrary, etc.?Rachelrushing (talk) 15:50, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It would not be appropriate to upload your "press archive" (I'm envisioning some kind of virtual clipping file). By and large, uploads like those are not considered acceptable as sources in this era of Photoshop. We prefer links to the actual original publications if online, or simple references of the sort that would be acceptable in a doctoral thesis and the like if the original item is not available. There never has been and never will be a rule that Wikipedia sources must be available online. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:56, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) @Rachelrushing: You don't need to upload your press releases in order for them to be used as sources. Editors can refer to the press releases already posted at https://www.nashersculpturecenter.org/press/press-releases if necessary. To help improve the Nasher Sculpture Center article, you could also provide links to independent sources at Talk:Nasher Sculpture Center. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 16:01, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The articles about us is what I'm hoping to share. I am happy to dig around for links to original articles, but some of these are a good 15 years old and do not have online sources. Is there any advice on referencing those sources?Rachelrushing (talk) 16:48, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rachelrushing: There is no requirement that a reference be online. It just needs to be "public" in the sense that is it theoretically possible for some editor somewhere go find the paper copy in a library. We cannot accept an upload, not only as a matter of policy, but also because is would almost certainly be a violation of copyright law, and we are extremely sensitive to that. If you were to put copies of this on you own web site, we would disallow links to those copies unless you had some compelling way to convince us that your copies do not violate copyright. -Arch dude (talk) 19:12, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Rachelrushing To cite a print source, (such as a newspaper article), you could use a template such as {{Cite news}}. It asks for information such as the title of the article, the name of the author, the date it was published, the title of the publication, etc. All things you would find in a standard academic citation. Also, we do not require that you use our templates. If you prefer citing sources in some well-known style such as AP style, Bluebook style, Chicago Manual of Style, MLA style, etc. feel free to use whatever style you are comfortable with. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:40, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Rachelrushing Though if you take the (brief) time to see how it works, the {{Cite news}} and related templates make life easier on other editors, and are much easier to use (for me at least) than remembering the intricacies abd correctly using the order, punctuation and abbreviation rules in those citation formats. Also, there are sites like newspapers.com that archive newspapers, some back to the 18th century, so as long as you provide a complete citation, someone may eventually come along and make it available online. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 14:52, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Rachelrushing: There is also a similar template called {{Cite press release}} which may be helpful for you. GoingBatty (talk) 23:01, 25 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Outdated information[edit]

Resolved

On behalf of the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP), I am writing to formally submit a comment regarding the information on the IRAP Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_Refugee_Assistance_Project).

The International Refugee Assistance Project Wikipedia page currently states that “The International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) is a project of the Urban Justice Center in New York City [...]” This information is outdated and needs to be updated to reflect the current status of the organization. The updated information is as follows: On December 23, 2018, the International Refugee Assistance Project (IRAP) became an independent 501(c)(3) organization and is no longer affiliated with the Urban Justice Center.

Verification of this change can be found on page 29 of the IRAP “2019 Report to Supporters” (https://refugeerights.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/10/IRAP-Report-2019-MECH.pdf) and on this mailing, which was sent on March 11, 2019: https://mailchi.mp/refugeerights/a-new-beginning-at-irap-3167577.

Formatting a Table[edit]

Resolved

Hi there,

I've created the following table:

Year America and West Africa India Europe Ottoman Empire, Levant, and North Africa Total Overseas Trade
1740-48 62.1 22.5 288.8 34.4 407.8
1749-55 100.4 37.5 389.8 54.8 582.5
1756-63 27.7 9.7 325.5 37.3 437.6

But it isn't formatting correctly. What am I doing wrong? Wikiyllek (talk) 21:48, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikiyllek: {| class=... must be on the same line. I fixed it above. A lot of wiki table code must be at the start of a line followed by other code for that line. You could also place style="text-align:center;" on that line. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:56, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Thanks very much :) Wikiyllek (talk) 21:57, 22 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Wikiyllek: Please also note the correct punctuation of ranges with endashes, not hyphens (see MOS:DASH). You could also format/abbreviate the headers to get rid of a lot of that extra whitespace. I would do something like:

Years America
and
W. Africa
India Europe Ottoman,
Levant,
N. Africa
Total
Overseas
Trade
1740–48 62.1 22.5 288.8 34.4 407.8
1749–55 100.4 37.5 389.8 54.8 582.5
1756–63 27.7 9.7 325.5 37.3 437.6

—[AlanM1 (talk)]— 05:53, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@AlanM1: That looks a lot better, thanks! Wikiyllek (talk) 20:16, 23 April 2020 (UTC)[reply]
