August 2[edit]

"Wikibious" appears to be a misinformation website posing as wikibios.[edit]

To Whom it May Concern,

While researching a very odd story concerning the assault of Senator Tim Carpenter in Madison, WI., I came across a couple of articles that claim to have been written by Anne Tyler. The articles are about one Samantha Hamer and Kerida O'Reilly, who allegedly assaulted the Senator during a BLM protest in Madison, WI. A Google search of their names brings up the articles on one wikibious.com.

I am dropping this note out of concern for Ms. Tyler's good name and Wikibios alike. I trust Wikipedia has means to combat this type of misinformation, and wish all of you well.

Sincerely,

T.K. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 76.90.77.223 (talk) 00:37, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wikibios is not affiliated with Wikipedia. You will need to contact them regarding any incorrect information displayed there. RudolfRed (talk) 00:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I can tell, there is no Wikimedia project titled as such, and so do not have anything to do with Wikimedia. They look more like blogs powered by Wordpress. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 00:42, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The term Wiki refers to a type of software (there are hundreds such) and to the sites that any of use this software (there are tens of thousands of such). The term predates the MediaWiki software that The WMF uses. WMF has no affiliation even with all sites using the MediaWiki software, much less with all Wikis. -Arch dude (talk) 04:01, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Incidentally, I can't find a site called Wikibios. It seems to have existed once (there are some references to it on other sites), and I can find Wikibious, Wikibiosalary, Wikibio.in, but the site itself doesn't seem to exist. --ColinFine (talk) 15:14, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Move without leaving Redirect[edit]

Resolved

Greetings, can an admin here move the following without leaving redirect? I asked Wugapodes earlier at Special:Diff/970464898, seems they are not been around still.

(If there is still better naming convention, please let me know.)

Accidental File Naming Process.[edit]

Hello. I uploaded a file to Wikipedia. However, my file had a processing error and it repeated it's name WAY too many times. I can't figure out how to rename or delete the file. Can somebody please help? — Preceding unsigned comment added by LocalContributor281 (talkcontribs) 02:47, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@LocalContributor281: WP:MOF describes the process to request moving the file to a new name. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:59, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

block[edit]

I see that I am blocked from editing and commenting (I believe) for a period of two years. Why? Novemberkind (talk) 09:44, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If that account had been blocked, you wouldn't have been able to ask your question here. If you have another account which is blocked, you need to submit an unblock request from that account. --David Biddulph (talk) 09:47, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Footnotes in headings[edit]

Hello. Is there any way to add footnotes into headings without the footnote appearing in the table of contents? Thanks, Alextheconservative (talk) 10:08, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Alextheconservative: I can't think of a valid reason to put a footnote in a heading. Why/where do you want to do that (so we can suggest an alternative)? —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 10:23, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
User:AlanM1 I am making a page about British political parties and wanted to point out that Sinn Féin was also active in Ireland. Thanks, Alextheconservative (talk) 11:47, 2 August 2020 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by Alextheconservative (talkcontribs) 11:46, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Headings should not contain footnotes, see MOS:HEADINGS. --David Biddulph (talk) 10:25, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It seems to me that an article on "British " political parties ought to be an article on "UK" political parties, since Ireland was an important part of British politics up to 1921 and beyond, and Northern Ireland is still an important part of British politics. Sinn Fein ought to be included not as a footnote but as a separate section in just the same way as the Conservative, Labour and Liberal parties. The same goes for the various Ulster Unionist, Scots Nationalist parties and Plaid Cymru. Where should one stop? The Communists, Fascists and various other parties have all been active at various times.Spinney Hill (talk) 09:10, 3 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is an article called "List of political parties in the United Kingdom". It is not just a list. There is some text and and most of the parties listed have blue links. Is another article required? I appreciate you may have some angle that has not so far been covered and may need to be notice in Wikipedia. Spinney Hill (talk) 08:53, 4 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Now I see the point of the original question having seen the sandbox draft. I think that where the party operates in two parliaments (eg the Dail and the Northern Ireland Assembly or the UK Parliament and the Scottish Parliament) that fact should appear as normal text in the article before the table for the relevant party. In each case you could say as text in the table if the leader was leader of the party in general or in a particular parliament or both if it be the case. Hi My name is Laika Fatien and I'm a french singer. My page was created years ago by Universal Music France. I would like today to add a picture of myself and translate it in french too. Could you please help me in the process ?

Thank you so much. Laika — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2001:861:3D80:CF0:FDFB:F2D8:1F0E:350E (talk) 14:18, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Laika. I'm afraid that you (and Universal Music France) have a misunderstanding of what Wikipedia is: it is not social media or a directory, it is an encyclopaedia, which contains neutrally written articles about notable subjects, based almost entirely on independent published materials. The article Laïka Fatien is not your page, it is Wikipedia's article about you, and UMF should not have created it, at least, not without declaring their Conflict of interest. The article is likely to get deleted, unless somebody posts enough suitable independent reliable published sources to establish that you meet Wikipedia's criteria for notability. (I'm not saying you don't, just that the article does nothing to establish that you do).
Having said that, you're welcome to upload and add a picture, provided that the copyright holder (which will usually be the photographer, not you, unless you have an agreement that specifically assigns copyright to you) is willing to license the picture under a copyleft licence such as CC-BY-SA, (which will allow anybody to reuse or modify the image for any purpose). If you or your photographer wishes to do that, please use the Upload wizard.
As for translating into French: there was a French article fr:Laïka Fatien, but it has been moved to fr:Utilisateur:Hannah Swerve/Laïka Fatien, and is also at risk of deletion unless some reliable sources are provided. Pinging Hannah Swerve, who has also edited the en-wiki article recently. --ColinFine (talk) 15:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
For the record, the initial article was created by User:Epeefleche, not by the subject's label or any undisclosed paid editor, back in 2006. I see a lot of suspicious editing activity on the article, but UMF did not create this article. --Orange Mike | Talk 15:37, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding Donation[edit]

Hi I already donated 525 INR yesterday through my mobile. But I still get a request for donation when I browse through the website on desktop. How to remove that? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 42.106.208.13 (talk) 14:35, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The only way to keep from seeing such a message is to create an account and choose that option in your account Preferences. The message system has no way to know that the person holding the phone or sitting at the computer using that IP address at that moment has seen the message or donated. 331dot (talk) 14:38, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Archiving messages on my talk page?[edit]

Hi, I see no obvious way to archive messages that were sent to me. I have searched. Sorry, it seems basic but after years i haven't found the way...

Spinner (talk) 15:18, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Spinner. It's easy to set up a bot to do it. See Help:Archiving a talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 15:32, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Ta. I was almost there too!

Spinner (talk) 15:40, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Is it Wikipedia requesting for Donations?[edit]

On Wikipedia page i found an advertisement for Donation to Wikipedia. Please clarify is it you or any misleading page is created. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2409:4041:2E9F:C740:F19F:E072:F14C:E1D (talk) 15:43, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The Wikimedia foundation often asks for donations to help it maintain this project, and others around the world. If you create an account, you can set your preferences so that it won't keep showing you the requests. GirthSummit (blether) 15:45, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

[edit]

How do I include my organization's logo on our Wikipedia page? I've tried to upload the original logo file as well as a screenshot of the file, but Wikipedia keeps saying it cannot determine if the file complies with their terms and that I can only upload a photo I've taken with my camera. I need to update the organization's logo, so any help would be much appreciated! — Preceding unsigned comment added by PATHFoundationAtlanta (talkcontribs) 16:17, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

PATHFoundationAtlanta First, you should create a new account with a username that reflects that a specific individual is exclusively operating your account(your real name is not required, just something unique to you). Something like "JoePublic of PATHFoundation" would be acceptable. Once you do that, you will need to read and formally comply with the conflict of interest and paid editing policies(the latter is a Terms of Use requirement and mandatory).
For information on uploading images, please see WP:UPIMAGE. 331dot (talk) 16:21, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
But WP:Logos might be more helpful for the specific instance here. --ColinFine (talk) 16:50, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

To remove template in my page[edit]

I have created the profile in the Wikipedia page ... how can i remove the inserted template — Preceding unsigned comment added by Profcramkumar (talkcontribs) 17:30, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Profcramkumar: It appears that you have written an autobiography at Draft:Dr. C. Ram Kumar. Wikipedia doesn't have profiles, it has encyclopedia articles. Please read WP:PSCOI, WP:AUTO, WP:Drafts and Help:Your first article before considering whether to proceed. GoingBatty (talk) 17:54, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]
And the reason that Wikipedia doesn't have profiles, Profcramkumar, is that profiles are generally written by or for the subject. In an encyclopaedia article about you, Wikipedia basically has no interest in anything that you say or want to say about yourself, or that your associates or institutions say about you. It is only interested in what people who have no connection with you, and have not been prompted by or primed with information from you, have chosen to publish about you. --ColinFine (talk) 18:45, 2 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Confused[edit]
