English Project[edit]

Hi~ I have been looking everywhere to find answers to a kind of a unique situation, and I can't find any. Here's hoping you can help.

I teach freshmen/sophomores Honors English, and I'll be doing a unit on Sherlock Holmes. For their research, here's what I want them to do: 1. Choose a Sherlock Holmes story from the canon and read it. 2. Find 10-15 items within the story to research and inform the public about what said item is (like a Wikipedia article). 3. Have the ability to "hover" over the selected item so that readers can quickly read what the item is about (I don't want students to then create a whole page on each item--I want the hover pop-up to be enough.

You seem to be the only website that does this well. I don't want them to have to have HTML coding knowledge; my focus as an English teacher is on what they actually find out in their research. Is there a way they can do this through Wikipedia but not have the pages published for public consumption? I know I'm asking a lot, but I do donate to Wikipedia every year, so I'm hoping you'll have an answer!

Thanks~ Denise — Preceding unsigned comment added by Dlabbe513 (talkcontribs) 00:43, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Dlabbe513: This site (English Wikpedia) and a great many other WMF sites are each separate instances of Mediawiki wikis, and there are thousands of Mediswiki wikis that are not affiliated with WMF. You can ask your IT people to set up a MediaWiki site of your own on one of your school's computers and make it available on the Internet for use by your students. Your IT folks should be able to configure your wiki by using the config of this site as a worked example. I have seen a Mediawiki site set up in less than eight hours. Your will not have all the functionality proviced by all the templates and scripts available here, but you can copy templates and scripts from here as needed or desired. -Arch dude (talk) 00:57, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Until you actually be fair, STOP asking me for money[edit]

You keep asking me for money. But while you hide CNN's controversies but highlight alleged ones for right wing news source, along with other blatant biases, I will never pay you a penny. No, I will continue to use your site for free and take from it what I can until you go broke, but until I stop seeing such bias on your site, you will never get a penny from me. So go f yourselves. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 138.88.138.72 (talk) 03:12, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Question on VOS article[edit]

I am adding two newly recognized and discovered Volumetric Overload Shocks (VOS) to the recognized types of shock shown above.. VOS occur as complication of fluid therapy in shock, so it is the shock of all circulatory shocks. VOS is two types depending on the fluid inducing it: VOS 1 is induced by sodium-free fluids such as 1.5%Glycine used as irrigating fluid during the transurethral of the prostate surgery (TURP) and is known in urology as TURP syndrome or Acute dilution hyponatremia. VOS 2 c

I wish to publish an article on the newly recognized shocks named Volume Kinetic (VK) or Volumetric Overload Shocks (VOS) t be added to the current article on circulatory shocks, Please tell me how to do that and upload the figures and tables as well. I tried and added it at the end of this artick=le on shock but it does not show later. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 102.190.80.216 (talk) 03:51, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

IP editor, a policy that you should acquaint yourself with that Arch dude mentioned is WP:MEDRS, which specifies what type of reliable sources are appropriate in regards to medicine-related articles. We absolutely do not copypaste entire scientific papers on here for copyright reasons. If it is an acceptable source, citing can be done to refer to the paper. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!⛄ 04:35, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Judging from the IP address, (Cairo, Egypt) it is likely that this IP editor has a conflict of interest in relation to this topic. The only Google Scholar references for "Volumetric Overload Shocks" are a large series of articles all written by Ahmed N Ghanem of Mansoura University, Egypt which use self-citations to build the impression that this topic is notable. A typical article which claims to "review" the findings is "Volume Kinetic Shocks in Surgical Practice" (PDF). (which has a Creative Commons open-access license). Essentially all of this article was copy-pasted into Shock (circulatory) on 29 December and manually reverted later that day. Mike Turnbull (talk) 13:15, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Adding translated content in Japanese[edit]

Hi there! Anyone has any experience in adding translated content in Japanese to a page that already exists in English? I would be so grateful if someone can guide me on how to do this! — Preceding unsigned comment added by Porkflossbun (talkcontribs) 05:50, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Counting identical edits[edit]

Is there a way to learn how many of my edits did nothing more than remove a single colon? I know I have a serious and longstanding problem with misindenting, and keep telling myself I'll start using Preview some day. Maybe seeing the magnitude of my problem in plain hard number will be the wakeup call I need. Also, same question, but replacing "single" with "double" or "triple"? Sometimes I'm way off. InedibleHulk (talk) 08:05, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@InedibleHulk: AFAIK there is no way of finding all these variants directly. You can however check your xtools stats, speficially, Small edits (<20 bytes) which should give you a start idea. Maybe Someone with quarry experience could also create a query that shows the number of edits from you that have a small size change (+/-10). Victor Schmidt (talk) 12:51, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, that won't do. But thanks for trying! I'll find my own way. InedibleHulk (talk) 07:52, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Pagew approval[edit]

Hello Wikipedia Help desk.

The page I created for a client has been in a draft for some months, it still needs to be approved. Could you please have a look at it?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Draft:Matthijs_Oudkerk

Thanks in advance,

Kind regards,

Frank Verhulst — Preceding unsigned comment added by Matthijsoudkerk (talkcontribs) 13:45, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Matthijsoudkerk As noted on your draft, "This may take 3 months or more, since drafts are reviewed in no specific order. There are 3,697 pending submissions waiting for review." Wikipedia has no deadlines, so what is the reason you have for wanting a speedy review?
If you are not Matthijs Oudkerk, you will need to visit Special:GlobalRenameRequest to change your username. If you represent them, you will need to read about conflict of interest and paid editing. 331dot (talk) 14:02, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
(edit conflict) Matthijsoudkerk. To deal with the important things first: 1) change your username immediately, so that you are not impersonating somebody else. 2) Make the mandatory declaration on your user page that you are a paid editor. If you do not do both of these things, your account is likely to be blocked.
Next, to answer your question: Wikipedia is created by volunteer editors, who work on what they want when they want to. There is no way to speed up that process, other than by getting a reviewer interested in reviewing your draft; and attempts to shortcut the process are unlikely to enrol a reviewer into this. Another thing which is unlikely to make your draft attractive to reviewers is the great slew of misformatted references, many of them bare URLs. If you had actually spent some of the last two months learning about Referncing and making your draft easier to review by addressing this issue, it is possible that somebody would have looked at it sooner.
To add a personal opinion: it is forgiveable for an inexperienced editor to make mistakes of this sort: that is one of the reasons why people who answer questions here often exhort new editors not to try the very difficult task of creating a new article until they have ammassed some experience in editing Wikipedia. What I don't understand is how somebody so ignorant of the medium you are working in can in conscience take a client's money. --ColinFine (talk) 14:18, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox image seems to be wrong after new image created with Crop tool[edit]

I just cropped File:Путин В.В. 16-06-2020 (cropped).jpg, making it nearly square and removing a lot of his jacket. It (according to the Crop tool message) automatically replaced the original image in the infobox of Vladimir Putin. However, the new image in the infobox is not my crop, even though my crop is currently the current version of the file. Instead, the new infobox image seems to be the original image, stretched horizontally to match the proportions of my crop. What has happened?--Quisqualis (talk) 15:01, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Just refresh your browser Quisqualis and all will be well. You have an old cached copy. Mike Turnbull (talk) 16:36, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why are WikiProjects never finished?[edit]

Why aren't WikiProjects ever completed? JsfasdF252 (talk) 15:53, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If a topic is broad enough to have a wikiproject then will always be new things to add to it. --Paultalk❭ 15:59, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@JsfasdF252: Wikipedia is crowdsourced by hundreds of thousands of anonymous volunteers, each of whom does whatever tasks they individually choose to do. Nobody assigns tasks to editors and there is no reporting hierarchy. A WikiProject is a group of editors each of whom has become interested in the project at some point. If an individual editor decides that some other task is more important, rewarding, or interesting than project tasks, then that editor will work on those other tasks instead of continuing to work on the project. By the time a project has achieved its primary goals, the remaining tasks may never rise to the top of any editor's priority list, and there is no mechanism to explicitly ask editors to please come and finish the project. If this is important to you as an individual, you are free to pick a project and try to complete it, perhaps by communicating with editors who have been active on that project. You could even start a new project completion project to find incomplete projects and drive them to completion. You have just as much authority and responsibility as anyone else to do this. -Arch dude (talk) 18:12, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
A long time ago I studied a short subject on Project Management as part of a longer course. One of the first things we were told is a defining feature of a "project" in that context is that it has well-defined deliverables and timeframe. "Wikiprojects" generally aren’t that kind of project. Are the citations used in the article over at EverybodyWiki reliable by Wikipedia's standards? It's very unlikely that the entire article can be transplanted as is to here. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 🎄Happy Holidays!⛄ 19:03, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It does look like the first few paras could be transplanted, most of the sources are local news and specialised magazines - the reliability of both those needs to be taken on a case by case basis - and then edited to follow the style guide. I wouldn't copy over the paras marked citation needed and I am certain the Creative Commons on that image is not legit so I wouldn't copy that over either. I'd suggest doing it as a draft first but I don't think you should come across any major issues. --Paultalk❭ 19:28, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It looks like you did not create it there, you created it here at Draft:Kyle Albertson. Everbodywiki appears to be one of several Wikipedia mirrors, which attempt to preserve content that is deleted here. If you scroll down to the bottom of the article there you'll find text that says, "This article "Kyle Albertson" is from Wikipedia. The list of its authors can be seen in its historical and/or the page Edithistory:Kyle Albertson. Articles copied from Draft Namespace on Wikipedia could be seen on the Draft Namespace of Wikipedia and not main one." It seems the draft was submitted to WP:AFC and declined three times due to insufficient sourcing. It was deleted after going 6 months without being worked on. If you would like to continue working on it I can restore it for you. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 20:32, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

False Information Posted on Wikipedia *** Need refund fro Donation[edit]

In looking up historical information I've found your service value, but I just discovered the BIAS in your company. I looked up who is founder of Stop the Steal and you allege with no proof, that he is a right wing conspiracist. This in fact is false. There is a tremendous about of evidence that the 2020 election was in fact stolen from the rightful winner, but more importantly it was stolen from the American People who believed that a fair and equal election was what we lived by in this country. You need to do your homework. And for this reason I want a refund for the donation I made yesterday. Until you can tell the TRUTH, I no longer consider you a factual source for information. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 108.58.186.34 (talk) 19:53, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

We don't handle refunds here. If you have a question about how to edit, we can deal with it here. If you have a question about content or sourcing, ask at the article talk page. Your opinion on the truth, or on what you consider to be a factual source, is your own business. Best GirthSummit (blether) 19:58, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Donations are handled by the Wikimedia Foundation, whose Email is donate@wikimedia.org. That being said, performing or witholding donations has no influence on article content,v as this would cease to be a neutral encyclopedia. WP:TRUTH may also be worth a read. As for the outcome of the election, do you have a reliable source for any of the claims you make here? Victor Schmidt (talk) 20:00, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I urge you to read Wikipedia:Truth.
I'll note that you were not misled. I don't think you'll find any official document in Wikipedia claiming that the contents represent the truth. The goal is to produce information that can be sourced to reliable sources. One might hope that that will bear a reasonable resemblance to the truth but that's up to the sources. This desk has nothing to do with donations so they'll have to ask elsewhere, but I don't think you have a basis for a request of a return as nothing misleading has been presented to you.--S Philbrick(Talk) 20:04, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
108.58.186.34, to add to what Sphilbrick said, see the general disclaimer, which explicitly states that Wikipedia does not guarantee truth, and also see our essay called "verifiability, not truth", which states that, in order for something to be included on Wikipedia, it must be verifiable, not that one random person thinks that it's the truth. • Your donation did not go to write some arguably false political statement on some particular article. It went to provide electricity and other maintenance costs to the servers that keep Wikipedia up and running and provide people like you the possibility to complain about Wikipedia's political bias. There is no connection whatsoever between the donations and Wikipedia content. No one of the Wikipedia editors, people who write the articles, ever get a single cent of the donations. This is completely unpaid volunteer work. JIP | Talk 14:55, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Also, this is not a company. It is an open, free for all project. Anyone, including even you, anonymous far-right IP poster, can edit Wikipedia. This is how the whole thing works. None of us editors who write the content are in any way employed by Wikipedia. This is just a hobby. JIP | Talk 20:39, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

RAYETHON ARTICLES[edit]

Sensitive material about an up to date Defence Programe. It could be damaging to Nat Sec status, and given current situation a big risk. Hi IP editor, Wikipedia is not censored, so unless there's a policy or legal reason for it to be removed, it won't be. Also, you say "removed for us", do you have a connection to Raytheon Technologies, or any of their associated companies? If so, you have a COI and must disclose it. Seagull123 Φ 22:13, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
To expand on Seagull's answer a little: if the material in question has already been published in a reliable source, then it is already in the public arena, and there is no reason why Wikipedia should not repeat it. If it has not, then it should not be in a Wikipedia article (because of Wikipedia's policy on verifiability, not because of any security issues), and anybody may remove it - though if you have a COI, you should rather raise an WP:edit request on the talk page of the article in question. --ColinFine (talk) 22:19, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Problems with multiple use of a citation[edit]

Hi. I am trying to edit this article: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Green-bearded_helmetcrest I added a citation to a book and the book showed up in the list of references. No problem so far. But I have now added some extra information and want to cite the same book a second time. When I go to the edit page and click Named References the book does not show up. If I just add a citation in the normal way the book ends up being listed twice in the References section. So what am I doing wrong?Adaptivity77 (talk) 22:47, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Green-bearded helmetcrest already cites the same source twice, first like this <ref name=IUCN>BirdLife International (2014). [http://www.iucnredlist.org/details/22726790/0 ''Oxypogon guerinii'']. The IUCN Red List of Threatened Species. Version 2014.2</ref>, then like this <ref name=IUCN/>, so that it appears only once in the reference list. This seems to be just what you are describing. Yo can do the two book citations in the same way. Maproom (talk) 23:22, 30 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Adaptivity77: see HELP:REFB for information on referencing. Mjroots (talk) 12:26, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Thereis is a limitation of VisualEditor (VE). The article defines the citation in the |status_ref= parameter of {{speciesbox}}, and Cite -> Re-use does list [2] IUCN but not its text. If you switch to source editing then you can see the whole thing. Shmuel (Seymour J.) Metz Username:Chatul (talk) 12:57, 31 December 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Hi, Adaptivity77. It looks like you added the ref name and the second named ref (for Restall) in a single edit. I find that if I hit Preview then sometimes it updates the Named References drop-down and sometimes doesn’t. When it doesn’t, I resort to hand-pasting the name, or Publish changes and make a second edit (Named Refs updates fine after a save).
