You're in the wrong place ... but I'll answer anyway. We don't delete an article just because the subject is a scumbag (otherwise Donald Trump would be out of here in a picosecond). Clarityfiend (talk) 05:40, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

i wrote an article on sandbox, saved a copy on desktop cant load it back . please help.--Milestoneinstitute (talk) 08:03, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Milestoneinstitute Your edit history indicates no edits(active or deleted) to your sandbox. If you didn't hit "publish changes"(which should be understood to mean "save changes") your edits would not have been saved and would unfortunately be gone. If you saved it somewhere else, like a word processing program, you will need to copy and paste the text over. 331dot (talk) 08:06, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Lupton family (another)[edit]

please help - refs 130 and 141 are the same but I need different quotes for both. Please put the date and publisher in for both refs if you can. I could not. Sorry 175.32.11.165 (talk) 09:33, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

It's the same way as the last 100 times that you asked on here and didn't bother reading the response..... Joseph2302 (talk) 09:37, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No, please don't get angry. My concern is with the publisher and the date of the article. I cannot work it out. I'm OK with the 2 refs not being "doubled up" because the quotes are different. Please don't get angry. 175.32.11.165 (talk) 09:52, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If the quotes are different you cannot 'combine' the two refs. Eagleash (talk) 10:13, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I am OK with the 2 refs not being combined. What I need an editor to do please is work out the publisher and the date of the publisher. Please - it is really appreciated. 175.32.11.165 (talk) 10:19, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Sometimes sources don't have a publisher or an identifiable date, and that's okay: you can just leave them out. 130 looks to me more like something where you'd use "Cite website" rather than "Cite journal"; I just added the site under the website field, and added a note that there was no identifiable date (I don't know whether you're using the visual editor or the wikitext editor, but in the latter, if you put things between <!-- and -->, it appears in the wikitext code but not on the published page). Is that enough information for you to amend the other one yourself? YorkshireLad  ✿  (talk) 10:38, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You are very kind and helpful - but I cannot do the other one (ref 141) even though I tried. Sorry Please don't be angry. 175.32.11.165 (talk) 10:47, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
No worries! Done it (and also 131 and 132, which I stumbled upon and which were also missing the same info). I'm afraid I'm not familiar with visual editor if that is what you're using, but if you're using wikitext, you just need to add |website=Leeds Pals Volunteer researchers before the }} at the end of the citation template—the character before "website" is a vertical bar, which you access by holding shift and pressing the backslash key (on Windows computers, at least). YorkshireLad  ✿  (talk) 11:02, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
  • Note: Everything else apart, the 'Leeds Pals' site is not WP:RS as it is a Wordpress hosted blog and thus really only WP:UGC without editorial oversight. Eagleash (talk) 12:03, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Eagleash, Fair point; I'll admit I was answering the technical question without really thinking about what the site actually was. YorkshireLad  ✿  (talk) 12:48, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@YorkshireLad: Having little concept of WP:RS is just another of the long-term issues with this editor. If you 'stick around' here for a while, you'll see why editors get rather frustrated with them. Eagleash (talk) 12:57, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I've marked all uses of that Wordpress with "better source needed". Joseph2302 (talk) 13:32, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Sorry, I am unable to locate any Logfiles for a problem. Please copy the entire message you get, and describe what you do. If english isn't your primary lagnuage, you may also want to contribute in your native lagnuage Wikipedia. Victor Schmidt (talk) 15:22, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Mostafa Raji Asfari: That does not sound like the language of any error message that would be issued by English Wikipedia. Are you perhaps translating the message given by another language Wikipedia? If so, you would need to contact that help desk at that language Wikipedia, as each one is a separate project, with its own policies, procedures, contributors, and help facilities. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 17:34, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Your account has no global contributions other than two at en-wiki, Mostafa Raji Asfari, so I think you must have been working on another Wikipedia and with a different account. --ColinFine (talk) 17:46, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Reverting or Removing Slanderous Info from a Living Biography[edit]

I am planning on making a living bio page for a professor who is going on hiatus for the foreseeable future until the campus is safe for return.

I want to understand how it works with either the removal of information about him, or posting negative things that are inaccurate, or that don't contribute to his profile.

Say, if he gave someone a bad grade years ago and that person posts something about it.

Can I, as the person who launched the page immediately do a revert?

Or does it need to go through a request sequence and the editors at Wikipedia would decide if that slanderous comment could be removed?

Thank you!

If this is not the proper use of the Talk feature, please let me know.

CEOMUSE (talk) 23:59, 14 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

CEOMUSE, in general, there's nothing wrong with the author of a page reverting edits to that page, and there's never a problem with reverting vandalism. Is the professor someone you know? And have you read WP:COI? Cheers GirthSummit (blether) 00:19, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@CEOMUSE: Unless there is a COI issue, the originator of an article has the same rights and responsibilities as any other editor. The originator is not more constrained. However, the originator has no more right to make arbitrary reversions than does any other editor. I'm concerned by your use of the phrase "... or that don't contribute to his profile." You do not get to make that decision. If an addition is referenced, then you cannot remove ti without discussion. Please read Wikipedia:An article about yourself isn't necessarily a good thing even if you are not writing about yourself. -Arch dude (talk) 04:29, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@CEOMUSE: Clear-cut examples of things that are not encyclopedic, like a student bitching about a bad grade, or that the professor dresses funny or has stupid hair, can certainly be removed. However, material that is encyclopedic, of due weight, and verifiable via a cited reliable source will generally remain, regardless of whether it is negative or positive. For most profs, this is not a problem. Occasionally, if one finds themself involved in a scandal, it can be troubling, but only in that it will be repeating what reliable sources have already published – Wikipedia will never be the original source of anything. I hope this helps. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 04:45, 15 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]
