Question[edit]

How does a user know if their article is submitted to reviewers or not? All i see is a blue publish button. I have been watching youtube videos about submitting drafts and most of the videos have a 'save' button at the bottom of the draft page. My draft does not have a save button at all. @Azazus: the "save" button was renamed "publish" several years ago. Our lawyers made us do it and it causes much confusion. It means "publish" in the sense of copyright law, since other editors can see your material as soon as you hit that button. It does not mean "publish" in the non-lawyer sense of making it available as a Wikipedia article. Please read WP:YFA to see how to create an article. Changing age over time[edit]

Let's say that a Wikipedia article contains a sentence such as this: Former President Jimmy Carter, now age 100, currently lives in Hawaii. (That's a hypothetical example.) Is there some template that will allow the "age 100" phrase to adjust as the years go by, without someone having to manually re-enter it every year? I tried using a template, but it ended up saying something like: Former President Jimmy Carter, now July 31, 1920 age 100, currently lives in Hawaii. Joseph A. Spadaro, that template is meant to be used in an infobox, which is why it came out garbled in the article. Best to say that he turned 100 on a certain date, in prose.--Quisqualis (talk) 04:19, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I disagree in Carter's case. His age is routinely mentioned in sources. There is also the bit that infoboxes are supposed to summarize material that is in the body of the article, not be the only place something is found (not that I necessarily always agree with that, but it does seem to be the standard). —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 06:20, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Shoegal2547: Use the Wikipedia:File Upload Wizard. Your proposed picture appears to have been taken by a US government employee and is therefore in the public domain, so upload it to Commons, not just locally to the English Wikipedia. Doubt about references[edit]

How exactly do I add a table like the one shown in this screenshot?[edit]

Hi there,

I am trying to create a single row/cell table on the right side and top of a wiki article like in the screenshot within this link for the same purpose: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ed_Sheeran

@Christopher McLaren: If you mean the table under the image, that is called an infobox. Much information can be found at MOS:IBX. I share Eagleash's uncertainty over the exact question. If you mean the table format found in the Filmography subsection, the table tool for that kind of table can be accessed via "advanced" in the options at the top of the edit window, and the how to is found at HELP:Tables. Félix An Your article did little more than confirm the existence of the product you wrote about, as well as a criticism of it. Wikipedia aritcles must do more, they must summarize significant coverage in independent reliable sources that shows how the subject meets Wikipedia's special definition of notability. Successfully writing a new article is the absolute hardest thing to do on Wikipedia. If you haven't already, I would suggest reviewing Your First Article and using the new user tutorial to learn more about the process. You could then visit Articles for Creation to create and submit a draft for another editor to look at before it is formally placed in the encyclopedia, so you find out any problems first. 331dot (talk) 13:57, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Google book search[edit]

Google books often provides snippets from a book rather than the entire contents. The Google books page includes an option to search for text. I think it is the case that the search will apply to the entire book not simply the snippets available for preview, but I'd like someone to tell me if my assumption is correct. In particular, if I search for " Ashkenazi" as I did here, can I state that the response "no results found in this book for Ashkenazi" means that I can say the word does not appear in the book, versus the more limited claim that it does not appear in the available snippets?--S Philbrick(Talk) 15:13, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

inter-language link[edit]

While editing the article on Elena Nikandrovna Klokacheva, I tried to construct a link to an article in the Russian Wikipedia on Pavel Osipovich Kovalevsky. It is red, but I can't see what I did wrong. Will someone please set it right, or explain my mistake, or both? J S Ayer (talk) 15:51, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Everything is working as intended there. The red link shows that the English Wikipedia does not have an article on the thing being linked to, and the light-blue-linked [ru] links to the article on the Russian Wikipedia, showing that there is an article on that wiki. * Pppery * it has begun... 15:55, 31 July 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Jax 0677:, it has already been listed at WP:ANRFC, so, no. Please be patient, there's WP:NODEADLINE and everyone who works off that list is a volunteer. correcting error on a page[edit]

a page is locked to prevent vandalism but it is listing dangerously inaccurate information. The page for the III% states it is listed on the Southern Poverty Law Center as an anti-govt group. This is false information as the III% are listed no where on the Southern Poverty Law Center. @Deborah Pendleton:, you mean this page at the SPLC's website? The page labeled "Antigovernment Movements" that devotes a paragraph to Three Percenters and also lists many individual 3%er organizations/militias? Is that the one that is "...listed no where on the Southern Poverty Law Center"? Unlike many claims disseminated by various groups, Wikipedia relies on citing sources and that looks like a well-cited claim to me. I hope this helps. Is there a way to search for pages that are in specific category combinations?[edit]

For example, say I want to generate a list of pages that are in both Category:FA-Class biography articles and Category:FA-Class India articles? Or Category:FA-Class biography articles and Category:FA-Class Religion articles? How would I go about doing that? @ONUnicorn: PetScan has advanced features like subcategories. The search box can handle simple cases with incategory:. A talkspace search works: Talk: incategory:"FA-Class biography articles" incategory:"FA-Class Religion articles". It can be combined with other search parameters but it can only search individual pages, not something with one thing on the talk page and another on the article. @RudolfRed: It's my understanding that VPT is for when you suspect something wrong with the site. If there was something wrong with the site, there would be far more complaints than one. Virtually any problem or question involving use of the site could be considered a "technical issue" depending on the user's knowledge level, so the distinction doesn't seem very useful. It's also my understanding that some very technical people help out on this page. If no resolution is forthcoming on this page, then VPT could be tried. ―Mandruss  00:21, 1 August 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Hitcher vs. Candyman. I'm dubious that any of your sources are reliable, apart from Entertainment Weekly. Certainly WP:RSNP lists BuzzFeed as not reliable, and some editors don't regard Biography.com as reliable, though there is no consensus on that one.
