June 21[edit]

Good morning, I am attempting to write a fictional novel about the above car and as an introduction I am hoping it is OK to take some info from Wikipedia. I have gone through your pages regarding licensing etc. but not being a lawyer I thought I'd better check with you before I go ahead. So, as an Prologue I would like to include the following with a reference to your website;

Proposed book section

The following is quoted from Wikipedia; https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bugatti_Type_57 1936 Bugatti Type 57SC Coupé Aero No. 57453 ( Chassis No. 57453 / Engine No. 2SC / Original Color: Black / Interior: Dark brown leather and beige cloth )[6] Also known as "La Voiture Noire" (French for "The Black Car"), this is the second Atlantic that was manufactured. Apart from its first years after production, the car's history remains mostly unknown. On March 10th, 1936, Greek racing driver Nico E. Embiricos ordered a Bugatti Type 57S Coupé Aero bearing chassis No. 57375 and engine No. 3S, which was completed on August 24th, 1936 and then shipped to his residence in London. By some unclear reason, once received, the car was sent to Corsica Coachworks for the conversion to a two-seater convertible racing body, this process coming to an end on September 4th, 1936. The Coupé Aero bodywork was sent back to the Bugatti workshop, where it was eventually mounted on chassis No. 57453 with engine No. 2SC.[10] Being the only Atlantic already fitted with the "C" specification supercharger straight from the factory, No. 57453 was completed on October 3rd, 1936. During the winter of the same year, the car was mostly driven by Jean Bugatti, racing driver William Grover-Williams and his wife, Yvonne. Subsequently, No. 57453 was photographed for the company's 1937 promotional catalogue and was also exhibited at the Nice and Lyon Motor Shows in the spring of 1937. Brought back to Molsheim, it was proudly driven by Jean Bugatti until the end of July, when he offered it as a gift to Bugatti race driver Robert Benoist after winning the 1937 24 Hours of Le Mans race. Being a very close friend with the Grover-Williamses, Benoist used the car alongside them. Some sources claim that Benoist even broke a few speed records using the car at the Montlhéry Autodrome in 1938. In the spring of 1940, all three of them fled to England before the Germans took over France and the car was returned to the factory. Even though it was frequently driven, No. 57453 never had a registered owner. The last mention about it was on a list of cars that were to be sent to Rue Alfred Daney in Bordeaux on February 18th, 1941, during the French exodus, being registered 1244W5 and bearing chassis No. 57454. [6] Due to its past and exclusivity, experts had estimated the value of this car at around $114 million. Jean Bugatti, whom unfortunately died at the young age of 30 in a car crash, often considered the Atlantic model and most notably No. 57453, as his most innovative and most valuable creation. Thus, at the 2019 Geneva Motor Show, commemorating the 110-year anniversary of both Jean Bugatti and the brand, Bugatti introduced the one-off model "La Voiture Noire". It was sold to an anonymous buyer for $19 million and declared the most expensive new car ever sold. According to the Bugatti stylistic team, the vehicle identifies itself as the ultimate Grand Tourer, but also as a modern representation of No. 57453 and a tribute to Jean Bugatti's stylistic genius.

I'm not a lawyer either. If you do choose to take info from Wikipedia, please create a reference per the instructions at Wikipedia:Citing Wikipedia. GoingBatty (talk) 03:38, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Please read Wikipedia:Copyrights. Short answer: Yes, you can copy from Wikipedia. Longer answer: The material is licensed to you under a CC-BY-SA license. That license lets you copy and modify the material, as long as you then license the modified material under the same license. Your modified work is a "derived work". I do not know whether or not this makes your entire book a derived work: you must consult a lawyer about this. If your entire book is a derived work, then you must license the entire book under the CC-BY-SA, and then anyone can copy it, with attribution to you, without paying you. -Arch dude (talk) 05:38, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Article/page undeletion[edit]

how can i undelet any living page — Preceding unsigned comment added by BMR09 (talkcontribs) 08:01, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Only admins can see deleted pages, or undelete them, BMR09. You may be able to request an undelete at WP:REFUND, depending on the circumstances. --ColinFine (talk) 08:46, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Please don't be angry. I am trying to get rid of the red writing in ref. number 1 which is a book. I have included a quote. The book is referenced a number of times. Please help and I am sorry for annoying u but I cannot get rid of the red writing. Thanks 175.32.219.132 (talk) 10:03, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know what makes you think anyone is angry. I am not angry, I am trying to help you do this in the proper manner. The Help Desk is not a place to request that others edit for you. If you cannot make an edit yourself, you should make a formal edit request on the article talk page, in this case, Talk:Mater Christi College. 331dot (talk) 10:12, 21 June 2020
I am trying hard - but I go to this site - Wikipedia:Edit requests - and I don't know what to do. I give up - I will leave the red writing on ref number 1. Thanks for trying to help 175.32.219.132 (talk) 10:28, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
It's not a site that you go to. That page merely has the instructions on how to make a request. You need to make it on the article talk page. 331dot (talk) 10:32, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
You can get rid of the red writing by reverting the changes you made to the article. (This is how it was before you altered it: no red writing.) -- Hoary (talk) 10:41, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
I have now placed a request on the article's TALK PAGE - but I'm sure editors will get angry when they see it. Thanks again - wish me luck 175.32.219.132 (talk) 10:43, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Why do you assume people will be angry with you? 331dot (talk) 12:30, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Fixed The first use of the ref name did not contain a quote: therefore including it in a later use produced the 'different content' error message. As has been mentioned before quotes are seldom if ever, of any use and I have seen them removed on occasion, as copy-vio. Eagleash (talk) 11:24, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I must strongly disagree, Eagleash. In my view, the |quote= parameter can be highly useful as a way of drawing attention to the part of a long web page or other source that supports the article content. They are also quite useful when the source is behind a paywall, as they allow readers without a subscription to see the key info from the source. If the recommendations at WP:QUOTE are followed, there should pretty much never be a copyright issue, and such removals are quite likely to be copyright paranoia, to be reverted, unless the editor has way overdone the quotation. However, when a reference is used multiple times, via a named ref, any quote in the citation should apply to all uses, or else it shouldn't be done that way. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 03:56, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@DESiegel: Quotes can be of use somtimes. However, this editor – who, if you are a help desk regular, you'll probably be aware of – frequently adds lengthy quotes to their citations, wherever they're from, which can digress from the exact point at hand. Eagleash (talk) 04:48, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Eagleash I will surely agree that the kind of excessive quote you describe is not helpful. Of late I have worked more at the [p[WP:TH|Teahouse]] then here, so I had not taken note of this author previously. DES (talk)DESiegel Contribs 04:56, 22 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Muco-inositol entry[edit]

A while back I inserted a caveat into this page (as noted in its history), saying that there is no peer-reviewed scientific evidence for the claims made in this article. I gave a reference therein to a refereed review I wrote about inositols for a Nature Journal in 2008 that summarized present knowledge. This was then removed by someone. Wikipedia is a potentially valuable resource, and it should not be filled with unjustified nonsense.

I suggest that either: a) this qualification should be reinserted - and remain there permanently; or b) better, the whole item should be removed from Wikipedia. What we DO know about muco-inositol as a unique chemical compound is that it exists (rarely) in Nature (e.g. in mistletoe) and its function there remains a total mystery that no-one is yet bothering to investigate. --BobMichell (talk) 13:26, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

The place to discuss the article Muco-inositol is its talk page Talk:Muco-inositol. --David Biddulph (talk) 13:36, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
BobMichell Your disclaimer had not been removed, another user had added wikicode to suppress its display in the article. However, I did remove it, as Wikipedia articles do not have disclaimers of any kind. The sources of information are presented so, if they wish, readers can examine them and judge them for themselves. Wikipedia summarizes what independent reliable sources state.
You also referenced your own work in making your edit, which is a conflict of interest. As such, you should avoid directly editing articles related to your work, but you may make formal edit requests on article talk pages for any changes you feel are needed. 331dot (talk) 13:38, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The muco-Inositol article needs some attention. But you should not add your comments to the article, you should make them on its talk page. Maproom (talk) 15:13, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Archive of featured articles[edit]

Normally, when I come to wikipedia, I'm on a mission to research something specific, & try not to let other things distract me from it. I have been interested though, by the day's, " featured article (English version), " on occasion, perhaps making a mental note to come back to it but then forgetting. Is there an archive of these, or any way to review past subjects covered? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.58.107.11 (talk) 20:05, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

There is an archive of previous featured articles at Wikipedia:Today's featured article/June 2020, this page also has links to earlier months. Danski454 (talk) 20:09, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

How to use parser functions properly?[edit]

So at User:PrincessPandaWiki/Userboxes/SonicWisp, I'm trying to make a userbox which displays different userboxes based on what the user inputs in the userbox's parser. For now, there's a big ugly white space, and I would like to get rid of the that and leave the "default" userbox only visible. I would like help on this. ❤︎PrincessPandaWiki (talk | contribs) 20:37, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@PrincessPandaWiki: Remove newlines by starting the next function on the same line: }}{{#ifeq:.... You may also be interested in mw:Help:Extension:ParserFunctions##switch instead of all those #ifeq. Note WP:SIG#NoTemplates. PrimeHunter (talk) 21:47, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrimeHunter: Sorry, didn't know about the template in signatures rule. Who will clean up all of my prior signatures now? ❤︎PrincessPandaWiki (need a chat? | my edits) 22:07, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@PrincessPandaWiki: Signatures are only allowed to be 255 characters so step one is shortening User:PrincessPandaWiki/Sig. Then you can use Special:WhatLinksHere/User:PrincessPandaWiki/Sig to find the signatures and substitute them. Or request it at Wikipedia:AutoWikiBrowser/Tasks. Search for templates that are missing a parameter[edit]

Hello! Is it possible to search for pages that have templates that are missing a parameter? I'm trying to find all pages with (Infobox album) that don't have the "cover" parameter. I couldn't think of any other way since search treats "|" as whitespace. If that's not possible, is it possible to exclude any page in the results that have an image file? TOMÁSTOMÁSTOMÁSTALK⠀ 23:26, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@TomasTomasTomas: If the cover parameter is missing, the article will automatically be added to Category:Album_infoboxes_lacking_a_cover. RudolfRed (talk) 23:29, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
{re|RudolfRed}} Good catch, don't know how I never saw this before. Thanks so much! TOMÁSTOMÁSTOMÁSTALK⠀ 23:31, 21 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
