Photo replacement on page[edit]

I just, finally, got a photo downloaded to Wikipedia Commons, but thinking it would replace the current photo on the webpage of my husband. I have no idea now what to do. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msbillings (talkcontribs) 00:07, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Recent photo is the wrong one....How to change and how to put on page in place of previous one? — Preceding unsigned comment added by Msbillings (talkcontribs) 00:11, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Msbillings: You should not be editing the article about your husband. Please read WP:Plain and simple conflict of interest guide, and declare your conflict on User:Msbillings. Then, post your suggestion on the article talk page: Talk:Jamie Oldaker. Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 00:34, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Msbillings: You appear to have uploaded a copyrighted image to the English wikipedia, not to commons. The picture appears to be copyrighted, by someone other than you, so we will delete it. If you can find an image that you yourself took (so you own the copyright), we will gratefully accept it, and you can put it on Commons instead of putting it here in the en.wikipedia image repository. This works because you are free to provide a compatible copyright license for such an image. Sorry about all the hassle, but we try to be very careful about copyright. If you have trouble with uploading or providing the correct license, come back here and we can help you. After the image is uploaded, put a note on the article's talk page and we can help with getting it into the article. Feel free to make any other recommendations for article edits on the article's talk page. -Arch dude (talk) 02:33, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Dark mode theme[edit]

I'm going blind looking at your white screen. Mediawiki has a dark mode theme extension available. Please grab it and integrate it into your site so the visitor can easily invoke it.

Regards. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 172.58.45.58 (talk) 06:04, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

If you're using Chrome there's an extension that applies a dark theme. AndrewWTaylor (talk) 08:58, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
If you create an account, you can enable a gadget at Special:Preferences#mw-prefsection-gadgets, "Use a black background with green text", along with many other useful features. (From the wording of your post, I think you're probably aware of this, but I thought I'd mention it just in case.) —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 11:45, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Wafef/WAFEF[edit]

HELLO

WANTED TO UPDATE / EDIT A USERPAGE - EVERYTHING DONE CORRECT / FINE IN THE END IT SAYS SITE CANT BE EDITED BECAUSE WE ARE NOT THE USER ?!?? W E A R E THE USER !! TRIED SEVERAL TIMES TO EDIT AGAIN N AGAIN BUT ALWAYS DENIED WITH SAME RESULT !! SORRY ???

THANKS — Preceding unsigned comment added by WAFEF (talkcontribs) 08:34, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@WAFEF: You're WAFEF, the page you're trying to edit us User:Wafef, which I've just deleted for being promotional. You seem to have misunderstood the point of the site: we're not an advertising service where companies can upload profiles, we're an encyclopedia. All the independent editors do here is cite, summarize, and paraphrase professionally-published mainstream academic or journalistic sources, without addition, nor commentary. Problem with thumbnails of subsections[edit]

When I open any article, the subsection thumbnail images are not display even I reload the article again. It began on yesterday. What is the problem with it? The Supermind (talk) 10:34, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@The Supermind: Another user reported a similar problem yesterday, but also with no details. Please provide a link to the pages that you are seeing the issue on. RudolfRed (talk) 18:09, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
FYI, the user has opened a discussion at WP:VPT for this. RudolfRed (talk) 18:57, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

African American or African-American[edit]

I'd always been under the impression that "African American" sans hyphen was more prevalent. What;s WP's consensus regardingh this? Seems to be a mishmash of both... Thanks Kingoflettuce (talk) 10:56, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I don't know of any current consensus, this [1] may or may not be relevant. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:20, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Bright red drop down menus[edit]

Whenever I hit a box, the drop down menu is bright red, and unreadable. This only started recently - does anyone know how to correct it?Wymspen (talk) 13:38, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

What box and what drop down menu where? JIP | Talk 14:16, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
The "Search Wikipedia" box at the top of the page - click on it and the list of suggestions is invisible as the box has gone bright red. It is happening on some other sites as well - but not all. Wymspen (talk) 17:12, 10 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Why Have to Tap to See an Image Using a Mobile Device[edit]

Why are images grayed out with instruction to tap to see the image when using a mobile device like an iPad? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 2601:C6:D400:330:759D:3F59:B054:4294 (talk) 15:30, 6 June 2020 (UTC) On the same issue, how do you get all images to display without tapping?[reply]

I can't stand this either & don't understand why this was selected as an option to go into production. There should at least be an option to turn it off. — Preceding unsigned comment added by RunningWild (talkcontribs) 13:38, 9 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Creating account with Captcha[edit]

I just created an account to become an editor. I followed the rules for Captcha, to the letter. The instructions say to type in the "words" (plural) on the screen. I did this many times, each time guessing where the word break might be. In no case did the letters sound like more than one word, and often not even one. After many failed attempts to create an account, I decided to type in all the letters without a space in between any of them. That worked, and my account has been created. What this tells me is that the instructions should not say "words" or even "word" but "letters." This is my first edit--I hope someone sees it and acts on it, so you don't have a lot of people who read literally (good editors are good at that!) and find themselves frustrated or, worse, alienated, by trying to follow the instructions. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Konrad Marx (talkcontribs) 15:43, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I'm sorry you had this problem, Konrad Marx. This page is mostly inhabited by experienced Wikipedia editors - most of us have nothing at all to do with the software. I suggest raising the issue at WP:VPT. --ColinFine (talk) 16:28, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

so for relevant editing you need to include sources, am i correct but why were some of my posts being removed?[edit]

yet i did include the correct sources, for example in the Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath article, the term billionaire heiress is correct, as it is stated in the news article i had posted alongside it as a reference source — Preceding unsigned comment added by Missnicky1991 (talkcontribs) 16:51, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hello, Missnicky1991. I don't know why your edit was reverted: it looks all right to me. But please don't be dispirited: this is how Wikipedia works, according to the Bold, Revert, Discuss cycle: you boldly made a change, another editor reverted, and the thing to do now is to open a discussion with the editor who reverted you, Martinevans123. The best place to do this is on the talk page Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath, and make sure you Ping that editor. However, since you've asked here, and I've pinged Martinevans123, maybe he will come here and discuss it with you. (His talk page says he sometimes doesn't reply quickly.) --ColinFine (talk) 19:22, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@Missnicky1991: Note the talk page for the article is at Talk:Emma Thynn, Marchioness of Bath. —[AlanM1 (talk)]— 23:24, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

I am a little confused about the titles of the articles and what the concepts are behind the article. What does the concept of art in the hatnote mean? Should the hatnote be changed? Should the titles be changed? Interstellarity (talk) 17:07, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, Interstellarity. The place to discuss that is the talk page of one of the two articles. Look through their archives first: I wouldn't be surprised if this has been discussed before. (I haven't looked). --ColinFine (talk) 19:26, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: But what if I post there and nobody responds within the next week? Interstellarity (talk) 21:22, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Dunno, Interstellarity. Perhaps WT:WikiProject Arts? The project seems to be active, though there's nothing recent on the talk page. --ColinFine (talk) 23:03, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
Interstellarity, I think the hatnote for Art is helpful: Art "is about the general concept of art. For the group of creative disciplines, see The arts." So the article on Art describes topics such as art history and art theory, while the article on The arts describes branches of art such as sculpture or music. The arts is linked as the main article for the section Art#Forms, genres, media, and styles. The size of article on Art is 99 kB, which is around the maximum recommended size for an article, so a merger would produce an oversized article. TSventon (talk) 08:13, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

404 Error When Viewing Images on Mobile?[edit]

Hi, I'm very new to Wikipedia, so I hope this is the right place to ask this question. I use the Wikipedia app on my phone, sometimes when I click on the picture either above or in the drop-down box of an article, I get a 404 error that the image I'm trying to view doesn't exist. I haven't found any patterns as to when or why this happens. Is there anything I can do to fix this? Thanks, Quarkitz (talk) 18:18, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Quarkitz: Could you please give us an example with the URL you're using and the specific picture you're clicking on? Thanks! GoingBatty (talk) 04:22, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

organizing airline destination articles[edit]

Hello I am a blind user who uses JAWS screen-reader. I'm wondering if I can get help in organizing the destinations on pages like List of Air Canada destinations and List of Malaysia Airlines destinations so that the terminated destinations and future destinations are in their own sections, rather than it all being in one big table. I feel this would be helpful not just to screen-reade rusers but also for those who are looking to see which destinations are terminated. I'd do it myself but am afraid I may mess up the tables completely if I do, so I'm wondering what action I can take. I already posted a talkpage message at the Air Canada one under my IP before my account was created, but no response. Not sure if it was seen. Sorry for my wordiness, but is there anything I can do to help start this process? Thanks in advance Aden Singh 45 (talk) 21:40, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

@Aden Singh 45: I don't see any related posts at Talk:List of Air Canada destinations and Talk:List of Malaysia Airlines destinations, so I suggest posting to those locations. Good luck! GoingBatty (talk) 04:25, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: That's because this [[highly problematic user previously posted these queries as an IP which I duly removed. If, as an uninvolved user, you feel like putting them back, you can, but I don't think this user should be engaged with. Graham87 08:03, 7 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]

Deleting duplicate talk responses[edit]

Due to poor signal strength & equipment issues (I assume), responses are being posted in duplicate. I've tried to undue duplicates, and receive error messages:

Request from - via cp3058.esams.wmnet, ATS/8.0.7 Error: 502, Next Hop Connection Failed at 2020-06-06 20:38:26 GMT

Suggestions? Much thanks. — Preceding unsigned comment added by Pasdecomplot (talkcontribs) 22:39, 6 June 2020 (UTC)[reply]
