Page protection question with arbcom decision[edit]

According to the banner at Talk:Khazar_hypothesis_of_Ashkenazi_ancestry, the page seems to be under extended-confirmed restriction if I am reading it right. It says editors must be logged in with 500 edits and 30 days "tenure". But, the article is not actually protected that I can see from the protection log. Is this normal, or should be the article have extended-confirmed protection on it? RudolfRed (talk) 00:02, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

RudolfRed the article is eligible for such protection but hasn't actually been protected. "edits by unregistered users and editors with less than 500 edits or 30 days tenure may be reverted without regarding the one revert rule." implies that such articles don't necessarily require protection. Is this disambiguation page needed?[edit]

I came across the disambiguation page Tolkningarna. Note that none of the entries have their own articles. Is the disambiguation page really needed? JIP | Talk 00:24, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@JIP: Yes, in my opinion. For each of the three listed articles, if that article were the only one, then the term "Tolkningarna" would be a redirect to that article. Since there are three of them, not just one, we cannot use a redirect, and a dab page is used instead. -Arch dude (talk) 00:43, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP: @Arch dude:, the disambiguation was created by @Werldwayd: two days ago. A Wikipedia search for "Tolkningarna" brings up 31 results and suggests that artists who perform cover versions on Så mycket bättre release an album called "Så mycket bättre 20XX – Tolkningarna", so Tolkningarna could be redirected to Så mycket bättre. However SMB, Lena Philipsson and Pugh Rogefeldt currently do not mention Tolkningarna. TSventon (talk) 15:03, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@JIP and TSventon: Yes, since the term appears to be associated with the TV series, I now think a small section explaining it should be added to the Så mycket bättre article, and the dab converted into a redirect. -Arch dude (talk) 15:44, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I would be ok to render it a redirect to Så mycket bättre. The page was created actually in 2012 by Pafcool2 as a redirect to Laleh (singer) with the note: "linking with Laleh album due to the second disc/ep called this. I understand its the Swedish for interpretations and it may need to be used for something else - perfectly fine :". It stayed like this for 9 years. So my edit after all this time in 2021 was an improvement so that it leads not just to Laleh but to a bunch of recordings. But I find a redirect to Så mycket bättre plausible. werldwayd (talk) 16:39, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to add an image to a DYK nomination?[edit]

Domus Litonii in 2018

I recently created Template:Did you know nominations/Domus Litonii to nominate Domus Litonii for WP:DYK. I would like to add the image shown here to the nomination but I don't know how to do that, as I don't understand where to place the image to. Could someone help? JIP | Talk 02:12, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi JIP, right beneath the {{DYK nompage links}} line, add the following: {{main page image/DYK|image=Domus Litonii - Marit Henriksson.jpg|caption=Domus Litonii in 2018}}
Also, be sure to add (pictured) to the hook. Hope this helps! Best, DanCherek (talk) 05:59, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Optional Class Parameter[edit]

Someone recently pointed out to me that the class parameter for a Wikiproject banner is better left blank for Drafts and Redirects because those articles are likely to change in the future and the class is auto-populated simply by virtue of the article being in Draft or Redirect space. I was curious what the standard conventions for WikiProject banners in general, but I'm specifically interested in whether it would be better to have a shortened WikiProject banner for Categories and Files because they are unlikely to change, but would be auto-populated. Would a short banner without a class parameter be best or should the class be included? Or if it doesn't matter, what would you suggest? I would assume that it's best to keep a standard convention across a large number of articles so if I'm making sure it's one specific way for an entire WikiProject what would be ideal? — Preceding unsigned comment added by TipsyElephant (talkcontribs) 02:19, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@TipsyElephant: You asked this question a few hours ago at Wikipedia:Teahouse#WikiProject Banners. Please don't ask the same question in multiple places at the same time. GoingBatty (talk) 02:25, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: At the teahouse I was directed to Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia/Assessment, which says "9. What if I have a question not listed here? If you have any other questions not listed here, please feel free to ask them on the discussion page for this department; for any other issues, you can go to the main project discussion page." When I go to the discussion page it says "This page is not a forum for general discussion about Wikipedia. Any such comments may be removed or refactored. Please limit discussion to improvement of this page. You may wish to ask factual questions about Wikipedia at the Reference desk, discuss relevant Wikipedia policy at the Village pump, or ask for help at the Help desk." So I figured I should ask at these locations instead. I'm still not sure if I've really gotten an answer. Is there a preferred convention for whether to include the class or omit it when the class will be auto-populated? TipsyElephant (talk) 03:37, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TipsyElephant: you were in the wrong place, Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia is a Wikiproject for coverage of articles about Wikipedia, and Wikipedia:WikiProject Wikipedia/Assessment is not a standardized page for discussion about assessment. I don't think anyone cares whether you fill in the class or not, if it's auto-populated - do what you want. Elliot321 (talk | contribs) 05:09, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TipsyElephant banners on Categories and Files tend to list them as "File-class", "Category-class", etc. This can be autopopulated or not (probably should be). Elliot321 (talk | contribs) 02:56, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

How to make a page?[edit]

How do i make a page — Preceding unsigned comment added by 50.83.165.24 (talk) 06:30, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

All articles on Wikipedia must be about subjects that are notable by our definition (WP:N), so start by picking a notable subject. This is an absolute requirement. We will delete your article if the subject is not notable. Then, proceed to WP:YFA. -Arch dude (talk) 06:34, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I assume this is about User:Mivida2021/sandbox. You have inserted "{{subst:submit}}" in a section header, surrounded by nowiki and code tags. This will not cause it to be submitted for review. You need to insert "{{subst:submit}}", without the nowiki tags, right at the top of the article. Maproom (talk) 09:17, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Question[edit]

Hello, I'm Mintu Martin from Vietnamese wikipedia. I really need your suggestions, especiallly from admin of english wikipedia. I have an member, who is argued with me, but he acts so vaguely; he is too smart not to break any rules, but somehow his acts make me annoying. Like a stalker, he always trying to find minor mistakes from me, overated them and show them to the community at Vietnames wikipedia (I bet that some admin in Vietnamese wikipedia know his dark acts, but they can't protect me because he didn't break any rules, and he has a talent of convicing people). I feel so uncomfortable and stress while seeing him acts to me like that. Is the any rules in wikipedia can protect me from this kind of people. Please, I need some advices from you, guys! Wikidata[edit]

Hi! I would like connect my user page to Wikidata. How I can do it? Dr Salvus (talk) 14:10, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

What do you mean by "Connect my user page to Wikidata"? Dr Salvus. You can add a link to a Wikidata item (for example {{wikidata entity link|Q4592334}} generates Project:User pages (Q4592334), which is a link to the Wikidata item that relates to Wikipedia:User pages). But I suspect that that is not what you mean. If you mean that you want there to be a Wikidata item relating to your user page, I don't think personal user pages are acceptable as Wikidata items: see d:Help:Items. --ColinFine (talk) 15:37, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: Userspace pages cannot have Wikidata items. Help:Interlanguage links#Syntax can make links under "Languages" to your user page in other Wikipedia languages, but not to other wikis than Wikipedias. The code must be added to your user page in each language where you want links to other Wikipedias. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:56, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I would like an article to be created[edit]

Hi! I would like an article to be created, an article about the film Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus. This film is mentioned on the Wiki List of submissions for the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature The film is mentioned in the section for 2021 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_submissions_for_the_Academy_Award_for_Best_Animated_Feature Wiki pages for other films on the list are created, why not for this one too? I am in a conflict of interest, so I would like someone else to create it - if possible. I kindly ask you, could it please be done? Madame xanadu (talk) 17:18, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Sure, I don't see why not. Madame xanadu, Are there any reliable, independent sources that you'd like to point us to that would help in writing this article? --Paultalk❭ 17:55, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Didn't you ask that here three days ago, Madame xanadu? Or was it somebody else? Either way, the reply to that said how to request an article. --ColinFine (talk) 18:37, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

@Paul, thank you for the answer! Here are some links, hopefully, it will be ok. Croatian film catalogue by the Croatian audiovisual Center has synopsis, cast & credits, list of festivals and it's here (official poster of the film is now different): https://www.havc.hr/eng/croatian-film/croatian-film-catalogue/accidental-luxuriance-of-the-translucent-watery-rebus

The film was an official nominee for the Satellite awards, in category: Motion Picture, Animated or Mixed Media https://www.pressacademy.com/2020-ipa-awards/

Considering the 93rd Academy Awards 2021 (Oscars), the film is now eligible in every category. Until few days ago it was just on the list for an animated feature.

Positive quotes and references: Michael Nordine for the Variety said:" The genre has long been viewed chiefly as a vehicle for fairytales and fables, but as long as artists like Barić are operating at the margins, it will continue to be healthily strange at its core." Variety link is here: https://variety.com/2021/film/reviews/accidental-luxuriance-of-the-translucent-watery-rebus-1234914648/#!

Los Angeles Review is here: https://www.latimes.com/entertainment-arts/movies/story/2021-02-11/review-accidental-luxuriance-translucent-watery-rebus-review?fbclid=IwAR0g-h_3jzs-k72UTLAz0gW1AGBdQrjM6C-08lWV9Gcw5TOrVWylbql66AU

Fabien Lemercier for Cineuropa: "Direction, art department, script, graphics, animation, compositing, soundtrack and editing: Croatian artist Dalibor Baric is an almost complete one-man filmmaking team. But he is most of all an incredible, utterly extraordinary artistic talent, as demonstrated by his rich and ultra-personal feature debut Accidental Luxuriance of the Translucent Watery Rebus" https://cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/389342/

About the Film Poster: this one on this link - the visual with a female head with waterfall instead of the face) is now the official poster. How can I provide you with the clean one? (without this call for the Oscar voters etc.) How can I provide you with it? https://cineuropa.org/en/newsdetail/397855/

Would this be enough? Should I give you some more? Thanks a lot, once again!

And both of you, Paul and [[1]], yes it was me a day or two ago creating a terrible mess while trying to edit it by myself. I didn't mean no harm. Just took me a while to understand a bit how the Wiki edit universe works! I still feel kind of lost in space so - THANK YOU! <3 Madame xanadu (talk) 20:15, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Files from social networks[edit]

Hi. Is it possible put on Wikipedia photos from social networks? I would like upload a photo without copyright about a person. Dr Salvus (talk) 17:48, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dr Salvus, probably not, the policy is Wikipedia:Image use_policy#Identifying usable images. You need to show the image was public domain or freely licensed. Fair use does not apply for living people. TSventon (talk) 17:57, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: The photo I would like to take is from the person's official Instagram profile. Can it be used on Wikipedia? Otherwise can I take a picture of her when she is on television since this person is a TV presenter? Dr Salvus (talk) 18:09, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Dr Salvus, You would need to show the person's official Instagram profile image was public domain or freely licensed, which is unlikely. Photographing a two dimensional object like an image on a TV screen creates a derived image and the copyright is owned by the owner of the copyright of the TV programme. TSventon (talk) 18:19, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: I'm afraid these photos may not be posted on Wikimedia Commons. Could you suggest me an alternative to put this person's photo on Commons? Dr Salvus (talk) 18:28, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There are three ways Dr Salvus. By far the most likely, if you can manage it (but harder at present!) is to go to where they appear in public and take a picture of them yourself. The second this to find a picture on the internet which is licensed with an appropriate licence - rare, but not unknown; for example I believe that some pictures on Flickr (but not all) are so licensed. Third is to contact the person and ask if there is a picture which the copyright holder (who is usually the photographer, not the subject) is willing to donate: they will have to follow the procedure in donating copyright materials. --ColinFine (talk) 18:46, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@ColinFine: I think the first way is impossible, the second way is difficult and the third is possible. The person I would like to have copyright-free photos of is Giorgia Rossi and this is her Instagram profile @giorgy0506, what can we do? Dr Salvus (talk) 18:56, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: As ColinFine stated, you could contact Rossi and ask if there is a picture which a copyright holder would be willing to donate. I also added some parameters to Talk:Giorgia Rossi to indicate that the article needs a photo, in the hopes that someone else may be able to obtain a photo. GoingBatty (talk) 21:23, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@GoingBatty: I think that the only solution is contact Rossi. Would someone suggest me what to write in the email? Dr Salvus (talk) 23:10, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: see Wikipedia:Requesting copyright permission#How to ask for permission for examples. TSventon (talk) 23:16, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: Which option among those proposed on this page should I choose? Dr Salvus (talk) 23:38, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: it probably makes sense to write in Italian, so it:Wikipedia:Modello_richiesta_di_permesso/Immagini/Licenza_libera. There is already an article in Italian. There are fewer options on the it Wikipedia page. TSventon (talk) 00:09, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: You must start with the basics of copyright, which most people are reluctant to believe. Rule one, everything is copyrighted by default. Rule two, unless there is an explicit licence that permits it, you are not permitted to make a copy of copyrighted material. Rule three: there some specific exceptions to rules one and two, but they are fairly narrow. Then, we have Wikipedia rule one: we follow the law. Thus, to copy an image on the internet, you must either find the explicit license, or you must determine which exception applies. -Arch dude (talk) 00:30, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Arch dude: Will this email give permission only for Italian Wikipedia or for all Wikis? Dr Salvus (talk) 07:28, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
The permission will be everyone. It has to be under a compatible free license, which means it must be able to be used by anyone, for any purpose, at any time. This means that other people could use the image for commercial purpose or create derivative works. Dylsss(talk contribs) 10:45, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dylsss: I contact her, who knows what answer he will give me? Dr Salvus (talk) 21:43, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dylsss: I contact her but she didn't answered me. How can I know if she autorized our to use her immages? Dr Salvus (talk) 19:08, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus: if she does not reply, then she has not authorised the use of her images. You are asking her for a favour, so it is unreasonable to expect her to reply within 24 hours. TSventon (talk) 19:21, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@TSventon: how long do i have to wait? Dr Salvus (talk) 19:27, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Dr Salvus:, your guess is as good as mine, but if you are lucky it could be a week, if unlucky never. She will have to fit in dealing with emails from the public around her paid work and may pass the request on to an assistant or to a colleague at work, who would have to read all Wikipedia's terms and conditions for images. TSventon (talk) 19:38, 2 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
  • Nitpick: TSventon's assertion that Fair use does not apply for [photographs of] living people is misleading. Fair use is a concept of US copyright law whose criteria do not exclude "living person photographs". However, meeting the fair use criteria is necessary but not sufficient on Wikipedia; there are additional criteria listed at WP:NFCC, and #1 is generally understood to exclude photographs of living persons (because photographs of them could be created and released under a suitable license). TigraanClick here to contact me 11:05, 1 March 2021 (UTC) [reply]
  • Tigraan thanks for the correction, could I have said Wikipedia's fair use policy does not apply for photographs of living people? TSventon (talk) 11:37, 1 March 2021 (UTC) [reply]
    • TSventon Per articles like Cheers etc you'd have to add a "in general" or something like that. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 13:42, 1 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]
      • @TSventon: I would probably say something like Wikipedia's policy for the use of copyrighted media; "fair use" is a specific term of US copyright law, not a general term for "exceptions to copyright limitations". @Gråbergs Gråa Sång: The rule really only applies to biographical articles. For instance, it would not have been appropriate to use File:Zardoz_zed.jpg to illustrate the biography of Sean Connery as long as that actor was alive even if no free photograph existed; however, it is plainly appropriate in the article Zardoz to illustrate the esthetics of the film, and cannot be replaced by free images of the actor that do not include the copyrighted elements.

Not sure how to tag this article[edit]

I know that this article (SOE RF Section) has several things wrong with it, but I'm not sure about which tags to use. Any suggestions? Shotgunscoop (talk) 17:59, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Shotgunscoop, please can you give examples of problems with the article, then helpers here will be able to suggest what ags are appropriate without reviewing the article from scratch. TSventon (talk) 18:06, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
TSventon The ones I see are poor formatting (the entire article seems like a laundry list), insufficient context in the lead section, and pretty bad writing style/tone in general. Shotgunscoop (talk) 19:55, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Shotgunscoop: You could use Template:Copy edit which also gives you the option to describe the issues you are concerned with. Eagleash (talk) 20:20, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Shotgunscoop, I had an edit conflict with Eagleash. The article is mainly a list of SOE RF missions by year, so perhaps it could be renamed accordingly. The article was published under WP:AfC on 25 February, so you could discuss your concerns with the author and reviewer on the article talk page, bearing in mind Wikipedia:Please do not bite the newcomers. You could also choose a tag from Wikipedia:Template index/Cleanup#General cleanup, but I would not recommend that for such a new article. TSventon (talk) 20:45, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
There's no real reason not to tag a newish article which has issues; that's a big part of new page patrol and 'page curation' gives the option to add tags as necessary. Eagleash (talk) 21:45, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Eagleash, I think it is legitimate to disagree on tagging. In general I am fairly sceptical about the value of tagging and here Shotgunscoop thinks that the lists which make up the bulk of the article are indiscriminate, which is an argument for stubbifying or deletion rather than copy editing. I agree that tagging as part of new page patrol and 'page curation' can be useful. TSventon (talk) 22:17, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

possible error in Clay, Wv article[edit]

When I lived in Clay, WV in 1967-68 the state signage said unincorporated. At that time Ivydale, Clay County, WV was the only community having the incorporated status in the county. I have no idea how to check the incorporation records I ‘m sure the town of Clay could have incorporated in the 1800s as the article states and still have been unincorporated in 1967. long under-referenced page with original research[edit]

I am a long time editor. A while back I wrote a short page on a famous math puzzle. Another editor expanded this page with a very long and extensive treatment of the underlying math that seems very excessive to me. He is a very competent editor. The page has now been flagged for original research and lack of references.

I have recently been corresponding with a well-known recreational mathematician who has written about this famous puzzle and we both agree that something should be done.

My problem is this: We know how to fix the page; but I do not want to hurt the feelings of this very active editor who has buried my original page in an avalanche of mathematical exposition. His math is correct and would make a great research paper. But it does not belong in WP.

What do you advise I do?--Toploftical (talk) 19:47, 28 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
