Adding Information to Articles That Direct Victims to Find Help[edit]

Hello,

I was wondering if it is possible for us to add information to articles that relate to human rights abuses and illegal activities so that current victims can be directed to places where to find help.

Articles like

all relate to the topic of human rights abuses committed by certain factions within the US government. While these specific articles and activities happened some time ago, they relate directly to ongoing programs that continue to commit human rights abuses today. People involved in these programs or who are victims to it today might be interested in how to seek help about their struggles.

In general, I think there should be a means by which people can add edits to suggest people going through certain struggles to find help. Of course, we would have to keep in mind that there are certain actors out there who would edit the article and remove this advice to keep certain activities under wraps and out of the public eye. How could we prevent something like this from happening?

Gottliebisgross This isn't really the forum to make suggestions(that's the Village Pump); but what you suggest is not in keeping with the mission of Wikipedia. Wikipedia is not a how to guide and cannot give medical, health, or legal advice(all for legal reasons) Anyone with access to Wikipedia has access to internet search engines that allow them to find information about how to seek help for any issue.

Furthermore, there is no permanent way to keep information on any article or page. An article can be protected if there is a demonstratable problem with vandalism or edit warring, but not to simply prevent others from editing it. 331dot (talk) 00:03, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Hi User:Gottliebisgross. So, this has been discussed on the talk page for Suicide, whether we should provide a link at the top to a suicide prevention hotline for those readers accessing the article who might benefit from it.

We don't.

One reason is that "An anti-suicide message violates the neutral point of view policy". The Wikipedia doesn't take a position that suicide is "good" or "bad". Also we are not a how-to site, we describe stuff but don't offer practical advice on how to do things such as how to reach out out for help instead of hanging yourself.

So it's certainly not going to take a position that people having their human rights violated is somehow "bad", or that not having their human rights violated is "good". That's a moral judgement and Wikipedia editors, or most of them, are not interested in or capable of making moral judgements, or at any rate acting on them, I guess. (Or maybe they are, but like to play on the internet that they aren't. I don't know what goes on inside people's heads.)

So I wouldn't bother to pursue the question further at this website, User:Gottliebisgross, if you want a practical result. Sorry, but it is what it is. Herostratus (talk) 06:18, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Table width reduction[edit]

Hi Folks!! I'm looking for help on reducing the width of a table at Wartime activity so it is roughly two-thirds the current width, or possibly less, 50%. I'm really looking to make the table a bit more chunky as currently it is taking up the full width of the screen and doesn't look right. Any help is appreciated. Scope_creep, remember that the article will be viewed in windows of various sizes, including smartphones in both landscape and portrait mode. Don't be too keen to change the table width unless you think the result will "look right" to most readers. Maproom (talk) 07:27, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]

Dear Wikipedia, This is a request for edit to correct an omission I made in previous edit of this article. I’m not too good navigating around computers. And my apology for any confusion/inconvenience. Thank you. This edit source again is the official US Coast Guard Historian’s Office website page for the US Coast Guard Cutter Chase, and also in conjunction with the original Wikipedia article. This correction is for the 3 and 4th paragraphs under the heading “Vietnam and the 1970s” in the USCGC Chase Wikipedia article. The Wikipedia article presently reads: “In 1973, as part of a Destroyer-Cruiser Flotilla, Chase participated in Operation Seaconex (COMCRUDESFLOT TWO). On this operation, Chase transited the Straits of Gibraltar, and visited Portugal and Morocco. Between the years of 1970 and 1974, Chase conducted three or four Search and Rescue cases daily while on various Ocean Station duties.

Between the years of 1974 to 1978, Chase continued to patrol the waters of the Atlantic, Caribbean and Mediterranean. Chase visited Guantanamo Cuba, Spain, Morocco, Ireland, France, England and Italy. In 1976, while on a cadet cruise, Chase rendezvoused with and came under the command of the aircraft carrier USS America and was involved in Operation Fluid Drive during the Lebanon Crisis of 1976 which ultimately resulted in the evacuation of nationals from the beach after the assassination of two U.S. officials in Beirut, Lebanon by the landing ship dock USS Spiegel Grove. @Bknp1: From your edit history, I see that you have made similar requests both here and on your personal talk page. Editors answered your post here. It is unlikely that interested editors will see your personal talk page posts. The best place to discuss your issues is at the article's talk page: Talk:NNS Thunder (F90) because that is where editors interested in the history of USCGC Chase (WHEC-718) and NNS Thunder (F90) will be most likely to see and respond to the issues that you raise.

You need to disclose that you are working on behalf of a client: see WP:PAID. For the text, you can read WP:DONATETEXT, but each article you link to was written by someone not named Jim Obergefell and copyright likely belongs to the site that published it. (edit conflict) :Ok, first of all PLEASE STOP TYPING IN ALL CAPS! This is generally considered "yelling" and is not very polite.

Moving on to the issue you raise: claiming to be the copyright holder is not sufficient. Wikipedia is free content, meaning if you want post your work here you must irrevocably release the all rights to the work, including others re-using it for their own profit. See donating copyrighted materials for more information on this. Also, this is an encyclopedia, not social media. Article subjects do not own or control content about themselves in any way. Wikiepdia relies on independent reliable sources as the basis for most of its content. Lastly, individuals with a conflict of interest are strongly discouraged from editing material where they have such a conflict. I hope that clears some things up for you. @Babawande: The material was flagged because it included direct copies from those listed sources (msn.com, cincinnati.com, and advocate.com.) Are you claiming that you are the copyright holder of that material on those sites? The copyright notices on those sites disagree with you. -Arch dude (talk) 00:20, 1 August 2021 (UTC)[reply]

[Edit Conflict] I would have expected a real "Editor in Chief" not to:

(a) make eight mis-spellings in a short message (including 'copyright' three times):

(b) to use correct grammar and punctuation when communicating with an encyclopedia;

(c) to know that on the internet typing extensively in CAPITALS is considered shouting, and rude;

(d) to understand how copyright works, and that Wikipedia is legally obliged not to host copyrighted text, even if posted by the copyright holder, unless it has been explicitly released by the holder using the appropriate legal procedure;

(e) to understand that, like every other subject of an article on Wikipedia, Jim Obergefell does not have "his page" here, but rather Wikipedia has an article about him, over which he and his representatives have no control (though he and they are entirely welcome to make specific requests on the article's Talk page).

On the whole, this looks a lot more like a case of a WP:PAID editor who has gotten in way over their head than an innocent new user who is a little confused about how copyright works. I'm afraid, @Babawande: you won't find a lot of sympathy if that's the case. Offering to do something for money when you don't actually know how to do it is entirely your own fault, and you've created a mess that the unpaid volunteers have had to clean up.
