Article talk page link

Why an article talk page link is hidden for anons who uses mobile phone or tablet? Vitaium (talk) 00:55, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

@Vitaium: It's not hidden for me (it was in the past). With a normal browser on a mobile device I see a "Talk" link at the top of articles without logging in. In the official Wikipedia app for iOS I see "View talk page" at the bottom. PrimeHunter (talk) 06:42, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

How to connect existing Wikidata ID to a new Wikipedia article

Hi! I just created a new article about Tender Claws, an indie game developer, and want to connect it to their existing Wikidata info - but I can't see how to do this. I read the Help: Wikidata page but couldn't find this info there. Can anyone explain how this works to me? Is it automated? Lijil (talk) 15:23, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Hello. That navigation box is produced automatically (I think by the {{infobox person/Wikidata}} templace) from the data about Poydras in Wikidata. Because the Wikidata entry says that he was a member of the U.S. House of Representatives for the Territory of Orleans, itautoatically creates a link to List of United States representatives from Orleans Territory - but nobody has written that article. The best way to fix the redlink would be to write that article. Otherwise, you would need to play around with the parammeters to the template. It looks as if you may be able to supress the field position-held and substitute something else, but I'm not sure how that would work. @ColinFine: Isn't the redlink concerned produced by the {{US House succession box}} at the foot of the page. Are you saying that {{infobox person/Wikidata}} generates extra content outside the infobox?--David Biddulph (talk) 16:47, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

William James

I wish to propose the following question regarding William James and Alice James, a pair of full siblings whose influence on subsequent Western Culture and Thought were significant:

Could William James and Alice James both have suffered from hereditary Left Temporal Lobe Epilepsy?

If so, that would explain Alice James' sufferings that were attributed to Hysteria, and William James' similar sufferings that inspired at least a portion of his founding work in the field of Psychology.

I ask the contributions of other readers and contributors on this question of historical interest. I do not, myself, know the answer to the question I have posed. Hello, Khalid. No, it won't create an account for you automatically: there is (by design) absolutely no connection between your donations and your activity on Wikipedia: nothing in the Wikipedia software even knows whether or not you have donated. However, one of the things you can do if you create an account is to set a preference to hide fundraising banners, so you won't see them next year. --ColinFine (talk) 21:18, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Please also be aware: we do not have any place for "profiles" on Wikipedia. We are a place for impartial encyclopedia articles about notable topics, fully sourced to published reliable sources. How to archive a search result?

Hi. I am looking to archive search results. Specifically from websites like this: [1]

If you follow that link you can search the federal prison system. It has useful information like where a federal prisoner is currently located. If we use Dylann Roof as an example: you can search his name on that website and find out where he is currently imprisoned as well as his age. But, the problem is that the url stays the same for whatever we search, so copying the url and pasting it into an archive engine like the WayBack Machine is useless. Does anyone know of a way to archive a search result through this? Perhaps another archive device that actually allows you to search while using it? The fact that the US BOP has changed their method of outputting the record (so the result is on the same page) is a known issue. For Mr. Roof, there are a lot of other sources that 28509-171 is the inmate ID number for Mr. Roof, however, I agree that doesn't work for many other inmates.Naraht (talk) 22:22, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

@Naraht: What would be useful is if we could use the Wayback Machine itself, make the search needed and then archive what we see. This would at least allow us to save a screenshot of the search and we'd have a specific archive link to the search result. That is ideally what I'm after but I don't know if such an archive exists or if Wayback Machine allows it through a paid subscription? I was hoping archive.today or ghost archive would offer something like this but I cannot find anything. Inexpiable (talk) 22:30, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

Use of screenshots from Minnesota police bodycamera footage

Hello,

Trying to clear up a few things about use of this image: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Amir_Locke_Handgun_Still-Frame.png Image is from police body camera footage from Minnesota Police Department and used in Killing of Amir Locke.

I looked into Minnesota police/state government licensing for images and was unable to find anything definitive on the subject. Seems like this would be fair use, but I am not sure what license it would fall under, or what Wikipedia's policies are here.

Magnolia677 suggested that I inquire at the helpdesk and check WP:NFCI. WP:NFCI states that use of video screenshots may be acceptable as follows: Video screenshots: For critical commentary and discussion of the work in question (i.e., films, television programs, and music videos), which I believe applies here; the bodycamera footage and the firearm held by Locke are both of substantial relevance to that article.

If someone at the helpdesk can clear this up, that would be great. DirkDouse (talk) 23:31, 6 February 2022 (UTC)

• @DirkDouse: The image is almost surely fair use and probably satisfies en-wp special additional criteria; it could therefore be uploaded locally to en-wp for use in the article. However, Commons only accepts free images, so fair use is insufficient to keep it on Commons (and it has been deleted since I first viewed that question).

There might be an argument that bodycam footage is in the public domain because it does not meet the threshold of originality. Police officers rarely have much of a say in what camera model they use, with which settings, and when they are filming (indeed, many would rather not wear cameras at all); neither do they have much choice of lighting and composition of the scene. A counterargument might be that the still frame was chosen out of many frames so it was not an entirely mechanical process. If you want a definitive answer, you should ask at WP:MCQ or at an equivalent Commons location.

At any rate, I would advise against putting that image in with an uncritical commentary, on WP:NPOV grounds. That image is after all PR from the police department to justify the shooting, and might lack context available in the full video.
