December 11[edit]

Is there a page or portal where I can report pages without any reference (e.g.: Antonio Porta (author))? I have inserted the template, but I don't think it's sufficient. JackkBrown (talk) 01:14, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

JackkBrown, you can discuss improvements to pages on relevant WikiProjects. Regardless of that, if a given page is not a candidate for deletion or a violation of BLP policy, it is usually not anyone's obligation to remedy it. Remsense 01:29, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: If you cannot find any references yourself using a quick web searh, then you should prod it or open a WP:AFD. -Arch dude (talk) 04:05, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@JackkBrown: By adding the template, you automatically categorized the article in Category:All articles lacking in-text citations. If you want, you could also add |attention=yes to the WikiProject templates on the talk page. Happy editing! GoingBatty (talk) 05:37, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Donation[edit]

What is the address to send a donation? 76.152.173.21 (talk) 07:45, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

If you are asking for the physical address to mail a donation to, that would be
Wikimedia Foundation, Inc.
P.O. Box 98204
Washington, DC 20090-8204
USA
If you're talking about a different type of address, it may be listed at this page. If you need further help, even though we are just volunteers uninvolved with the donation process here at the Help Desk, don't hesitate to ask me! Cheers. Remsense 07:59, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Dropped waivers.[edit]

It's not clear what you're looking for help with – do you have a question about using or editing Wikipedia? Tollens (talk) 08:12, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Request Desktop Website[edit]

In rare moments, my iPad Air (5th generation) will somehow switch to the mobile version of Wikipedia even though I have turned on a Safari setting that prevents the mobile version from being accessed. Why is that? Equalwidth (C) Your watchlist 09:38, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Equalwidth: Hmm, that doesn't usually happen to me when I access Wikipedia on a mobile device. Try clicking this link – it should tell Wikipedia that you want to use the desktop version (at least for a while – your browser might forget that saved preference eventually). If this happens again, you can swap views by scrolling to the bottom of the page and clicking the "Desktop" button in the footer. Tollens (talk) 10:16, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Equalwidth: I don't know which setting you refer to or when it happens but if https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Example takes you to mobile then you can try User:Þjarkur/NeverUseMobileVersion. PrimeHunter (talk) 10:48, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

How do i publish an article for the first time[edit]

How do i publish an article for the first time , i have an article which has been published in a local news paper and we need to add that information to wikipedia. Need help on how to add the article and publish in weki Themalabarhills (talk) 11:00, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

The content on your user page is thoroughly unsuitable as a Wikipedia article. Wikipedia article summarize what independent reliable sources with significant coverage state about a topic, showing how it is notable. Wikipedia is not a place for media outlets to publish their stories. 331dot (talk) 11:11, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
See MOS:BLP. Tutwakhamoe (talk) 11:59, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Moreover, Themalabarhills, the content of your user page is thoroughly unsuitable as a user page. I'd move it to your "sandbox" myself, if it weren't for the facts that (i) I'm so sleepy that I can't find the "move" option, and (ii) it's so utterly unlike an article that it's perhaps better just deleted. I pass on this decision and minor chore to some other editor who's less sleepy than I now am. -- Hoary (talk) 13:12, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I would tag for speedy deletion but it won't let me, the user page is rather an oddity. Theroadislong (talk) 13:14, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Theroadislong, the user page is transcluded from Meta, so it would have to be deleted there. Their policy is at Meta:Meta:Deletion policy. TSventon (talk) 13:44, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Wikipedia:Global user page describes the feature. PrimeHunter (talk) 14:58, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I've nominated the global userpage for deletion. If declined, I wonder if it would be possible to create an empty User: page locally to avoid transcluding the non-compliant material. Folly Mox (talk) 18:52, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
We need to get this article on wikipedia as a matter of fact that , Dr. Anita Garware has made an impact on the lifes and is still continuing in social work and other feilds. Themalabarhills (talk) 08:50, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Then you need to demonstrate that Garware is wikinotable through the use of reliable sources, and that if an article is written, it is written in an encyclopedic manner instead of as some promotional ad copy. To be clear, no subject is in need of being on Wikipedia. —Tenryuu 🐲 ( 💬 • 📝 ) 13:24, 13 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
To speak frankly, Themalabarhills, Wikipedia is not interest in your needs. The fact that you "need" to get an article on a subject into Wikipedia suggests strongly that your purpose is promotion, which is contrary to the fundamental principles of Wikipedia. Request for Information[edit]

We are associated with a project on Jainism and for that we need all data stored on wikipedia about jainism. Currently, how it works is, we ask questions on Janism and it replies, but by this, we can not ensure if I have got all data. Is there anyway that I can be sure of.

Is there any way that you can guide us in this matter? Sksandesara (talk) 11:15, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Jainism is the main article, and there are various other articles linked from it.--♦IanMacM♦ (talk to me) 11:30, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
You can also look at the pages located in Category:Jainism. ––FormalDude (talk) 11:39, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sksandesara This search shows that there are currently over 24,000 articles containing the word "jainism" in Wikipedia. Hence it would be very difficult to ensure you have a comprehensive set of data. Mike Turnbull (talk) 12:59, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Sksandesara: You can if you wish get a copy of a snapshot of all of Wikipedia. It's big. See Wikipedia:Database download. But as you know Wikipedia itself is structured for human reading comprehension, and not as a database, so your post-processing software will be complicated. We also have a sister project named Wikidata. Wikidata is an actual database with items about a great many objects, including all Wikipedia articles, and it is structured to allow the use of queries. It's not that hard to learn to use these queries, and it might be useful to you. -Arch dude (talk) 17:31, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you. Really appreciate. 223.184.177.229 (talk) 13:32, 21 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Notification for Links to Pages by Other Users[edit]

Is there a way to receive notifications when a link to a page, created by someone else, is added? I'm familiar with notifications for my own page creations but interested in staying updated on links to pages by other users. Janwuf (talk) 15:17, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

@Janwuf, Hello! You mean that you'd like a notification whenever, say, Jack Hadley is added to an article (which I get since I started it)? I'm pretty sure we don't have that option. The best I can think of is looking at [1] or [2]. Gråbergs Gråa Sång (talk) 17:31, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Janwuf: You could also try "Related changes" under Tools on Jack Hadley, and change "Show changes on pages linked from" to "Show changes on pages linking to". This gives [3]. It doesn't care when the link was added but if a page has added the link then it was probably edited recently and you might find it in this way. The current list is dominated by this frequently edited help desk but at least it shows the feature works. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:03, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
@Janwuf: You could also run something like this search occasionally. GoingBatty (talk) 04:15, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
I wrote Backlinks Watchlist for this purpose. The current version requires installing it on a unix computer with access to crontab. Each install is for 1 person being notified, multiple pages watched. It's a single awk file. -- GreenC 04:37, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Thank you for your answers. Not exactly what I was looking for, but very useful anyway! Janwuf (talk) 14:48, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
There is an old request at phab:T66090. PrimeHunter (talk) 18:35, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page width jumping[edit]

How do I get rid of the atrocious switching of page width/white space while resizing the browser page? In some positions the text becomes unreadable, in ithers the images take half of the layour. - Altenmann >talk 18:37, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Please, provide an example. Ruslik_Zero 20:30, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
After a more meticulous search I found the culprit: in Preferences->Gadgets -> Appearance the option "Improved appearance for mobile, narrow and wide screens" was checked. When I unchecked it, everything became fine. Despite its name it was way not an improvement (eg for article Petro Konashevych-Sahaidachny - Altenmann >talk 22:18, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Page Marked For Deletion[edit]

A contributor is constantly requesting my page is removed as it "may be a PR piece." It isn't. I didn't even originate or contribute to it, but it's accurate and taken from interviews I've done. Today the page was marked for Deletion and a Wikipedia editor emailed me to say his colleague could write it in a complaint way for $900 - even though it already complaint. Is this some new scam where long standing contributors can be trouble makers to get money for their pals? To repeat, the page is compliant, other contributors have told this person to stop making trouble, yet I have a "Marked For Deletion" banner at the top of my page and a request for money from a Wikipedia editor. 92.19.6.165 (talk) 22:14, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone telling you that they can prevent articles from being deleted for a fee is a scammer. Beyond that though, nobody can possibly comment on the merits of an article until they are told which one it is. AndyTheGrump (talk) 22:20, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
Hi. There are several points I'd like to make about what you have said above:
  • Scam warning - Please read the linked scam warning. What you have described is unfortunately a scam that has been going around and costing some people a lot of money for nothing. Do not EVER send someone money if they tell you they can prevent an article being deleted if you pay them.
  • You consistently refer to "my page". Please be aware that you do not own a Wikipedia page. If you wrote a Wikipedia page, you do not own the text you contributed, you have donated your writing under the terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-ShareAlike 4.0 International License. If you are the subject of the article, it is not your page, it is Wikipedia's article about you.
  • You do not indicate how it was "marked for deletion". There are three deletion processes; Speedy deletion, Proposed deletion (called "Prod"), and Articles for Deletion. Speedy deletion is for articles that meet defined criteria, including blatant advertising (think "Buy George's Widgets Today!"), which could be what the article is facing given you say the contributor says it "may be a PR piece". Articles marked for speedy deletion are subject to deletion at any time at the discretion of the deleting admin. Prod is designed to be a slower process, to give people time to object, while still allowing uncontroversial items to be deleted with little fuss. If the article in question is marked for that it will be deleted after a week if no one objects to the deletion, but you can object by removing the template at the top. Last is Articles for Deletion. That is designed for more complex or controversial articles. There will be a discussion about the article which will last a week where people opine as to if the article meets our inclusion criteria. At the end of a week (or two or 3 if there's not much participation in the discussion) an administrator will read the discussion and determine what the consenus of the participants was. If it is that, I would encourage you to read the discussion and see what issues people bring up and if you think they can be fixed.
  • We would be able to provide you with better advice if you would tell us which of our 6,755,735 articles we are talking about. ~ ONUnicorn(Talk|Contribs)problem solving 22:48, 11 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
  • Complaints will arise from non-compliance. -- Hoary (talk) 00:16, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
". . . it's accurate and taken from interviews I've done." This immediately suggest that the article may fall foul of both lack of independence from the subject (interviews cannot count towards Notability), and of using your own Original research, which Wikipedia does not host on general principles. {The poster formerly known as 87.81.230.195} 90.199.215.44 (talk) 14:31, 12 December 2023 (UTC)[reply]
