A number of Templates for Indonesia-related articles exist. These can be inserted to give a unified look and feel to pages, as well as to assist navigation. Please use this space to list them here, using a bullet followed by the double-curled bracket codes (wrapped with the "nowiki" HTML tag):

  • {{History of Indonesia}} - used to create a article series for articles on major eras and events in the history of Indonesia.
  • {{Politics of Indonesia}} - used for articles covering Indonesian elections, political parties, political offices, and summary ovewview pages on Politics of Indonesia.
  • {{Provinces of Indonesia}} - used for articles on individual provinces of Indonesia.

Stubs[edit]

Stub messages are a subset of Templates, used to mark an article as a stub, an incomplete article that is short and in need of expansion. By adding a stub message the article is placed in a specialized Category. There are two stubs directly related to Indonesia:

  • {{Indonesia-stub}} - for general Indonesian stubs topics. Places articles in Category:Indonesia_stubs
  • {{Indonesia-geo-stub}} - for Indonesian stubs related to geographic features of Indonesia (cities, towns, bodies of water, volcanoes, etc). These are put into Category:Indonesia geography stubs.
  • {{Indonesia-bio-stub}} - for stubs related to Indonesian people

Hi all,.. I just want to ask your help about distorsion data in Scouting article. It's written there that the United States ranked on the top, with 10Million+ members. But, if we see on the tabel, Indonesia should be on top with 8.9 Millions Scouts, while United States has only 6.9Millions Scouts.Can somebody help me to say something?

I am a PhD student of Old-Javanese literature. I am writing a thesis which I plan to submit at the University of Leiden. My main areas of interest are literature and linguistics. But I am also interested in history and anthropology. I've seen that there are lots of inaccuracies and misunderstanding in these fields on Wikipedia, so I intend to help anyway I can. For now, I've no professional or familial ties to Indonesia, but I wrote an MA thesis about Indonesian political history a while back at an American university, and I've studied and travelled there. Both my parents were born in Nias but I was born and raised in Jakarta. Recently graduated (from Universitas Indonesia) and now looking for a job :p (preferably in advertising since it was my undergraduate major) (strike that, got a job. Strike that, I should prolly stop advertising my employment status here :p). Though I began by editing some (read: tiny snippets of) computer stuffs, the bulk of my contribution were made a year later to the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake article (along with starting Nias while I was at it). I'm Australian, but now live in the UK. I was an exchange student to Ambon in 1988 for six months, and still have ties with my 'family' and some of the friends I made there. I studied Indonesian all through High School and University, but then the travel bug bit really hard, and I did the 'Aussie in London' thing and travelled around Europe. I'm pretty settled here now, but feel that Indonesia and Indonesian language are the things I really sacrificed in the move to Europe, where Indonesian is not the most useful of languages to speak! I'm really enjoying the opportunity of stretching my linguistic-legs again, so to speak, and have been translating any reasonable-sized article in Indonesian that I find into English. I'm currently working on Bumi Manusia and have ordered a copy of the English translation to help me out as I'm a bit stuck on some of the language. I speak Indonesian and am interested in Indonesian post-independence history and politics, particularly the Guided Democracy and Old to New Order transition periods. I am an American writer. However, I spent part of my childhood in Bandung and Tarakan because my parents did mission work there. Indonesian cities[edit]

Indonesian Regions and Areas[edit]

  • Gunung Kidul is an administrative region, but also a cultural and an ecological area - for the sake of clarity there are a number of areas in Indonesia that partially link in with the admin/cultural/geographical boundaries. Do we simply roll the info into the one article each time?

Similar to the Javanese artice is language (and rightly so) but some potential links might be to the cultural or demographic frameworks as well? Interested if anyone might have comments on this.vcxlor 05:33, 13 October 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The article on Aceh has a history section that starts at 850 AD. That seems a little late. Can someone with some expretise talk about the pre-Islamic history of the region?

Mataram[edit]

  • Mataram needs to be made a disambiguation page that points to separate articles on the Hindu-Buddhist kingdom of Mataram, the 15th century sultanate of Mataram, and the present-day town on Lombok. There also needs to be an article on the process of Indianisation in South East Asian history. A number of the articles on various Hindu-Buddhist kingdoms in Indonesia and elsewhere need to be reviewed for POV problems. Alan 3 July 2005 15:20 (UTC)
    • I agree. But I think it's better to name the so called Hindu-Buddhist Mataram, Mataram I or Old Mataram and the so called Muslim Mataram, New Mataram or Mataram II.       • I'm afraid I disagree quite strongly. Names such as New Mataram or Mataram II have never been used either by the people of the area or in the historiography. I think it's quite important not to confuse an already confusing onomastics further by inventing new names. An exact analogy is the situation in the Balkans and Africa where some present-day states have nothing (except their names) in common with their medieval predecessors. I don't think anyone speaks about New Mali or New Macedonia. The problem with a neologism such as Mataram II is that it sounds like a stratigraphic designation from a ceramic sequence because those traditionally use Roman numerals. The Indonesian Wikipedia calls its equivalent articles 'Kesultanan Mataram' and 'Kerajaan Mataram'. Alan 3 July 2005 23:40 (UTC)
    • Yeah, the problem is, only Sultan Agung (Prabu Anyakrakusuma) was one of the few king of the New Mataram who bore Sultan as a title. Only with prince Mangkubumi later became Sultan as a title in use again (as Sultan Hamengkubuwana I), but only in Yogyakarta. Of course I am willing to make concession. An aside: many people in the West tend to see matter purely in black and white and I regret that. If you want to call them the Kingdom of Mataram and Sultanate of Mataram or something similar, I don't object, instead of I or II. But please pay attention to the facts I mentioned above. By the way, previously the Old Mataram was called Mataram-Hindu and the New Mataram was Mataram-Islam or something like that in the Indonesian Wikipedia and I objected the use of this nomenclature. Hindu topics[edit]

Almost all articles dealing with Hinduism in Southeast Asia need attention for POV and factual content issues. Agama Hindu Dharma and linked articles for example describe a large Hindu resurgence in Indonesia which is not reported by any independent source and seem to regard the alleged resurgence as validation of medieval Hindu prophecies. I'll defer to someone with better Indonesian as to whether Hinduism is called Agama Hindu or Agama Hindu Dharma in Bahasa. I'm inclined to mark these articles NPOV but thought it should be discussed here first. Alan 14:46, 21 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

You have made a good point. An example is the Osing article which has really bad English and is just factually incorrect in most of assersions. The same can be said for the article on the Tenggerese. The current article Culture of Indonesia needs alot of attention to expand its scope to cover other aspects of Indonesian culture, and also work to broaden the focus beyond Bali & Java. Islamic Defenders Front[edit]

The article on the Islamic Defender Front (more popularly known in Indonesia as Front Pembela Islam) has a much richer . For example, the external links in the current English version was lifted from the Indonesian version. And IMHO the id version is more NPOV. The current English version is listed as an Islam stub. I was about to add an Indonesian stub marker on it when I remembered you guys :p SO... how 'bout it, can I put the stub mark on? template for malay empires[edit]

Could you guy please create a template for the indonesian empires of the past?

I am working on a template, Template:History of Indonesia that includes the pre-colonial period, which could overlap this. I think creating a different template on the Malay civilizations/empires would be useful and complement the History of Indonesia template. One hitch, though, could be that a number of these civilizations/empires covered Malaysia and other Southeast Asian nations as well.
If you could run this by Wikipedia:Malaysia-related topics notice board, maybe we can get a good discussion going!

History of Indonesia Template[edit]

At present, I believe that there is a dire need to create a series of History of Indonesia pages. These would be based on time periods in Indonesian history (e.g. Pre-colonial, Colonial, Post-Independence, Confrontation, etc.). This would let the article History of Indonesia be closer to a general summary-style page, and allow those who wish for greater depth to examine the articles on historical eras. That is, those who wish to examine Indonesia under Sukarno could look at a Post-Independence Era page, without being burdened by having to navigate stuff on the Majapahit.

To start off, I've created a template, that can be examined at Template:History of Indonesia. This template, applied to Indonesian history pages, would allow easier navigation for readers, as well as a greater unity for pages on historical events.

I'm asking for anyone with a very good knowledge and who's interested to please contact me so that this is a group effort. In particular, my weakness (being in a country that tends to tell the buleh side of things) is in the pre-colonial history of the archipelago. Especially helpful would be translations from Indonesian Wikipedia articles.

Indonesian Chinese and The Indonesian Ethnic Chinese and the view of nationhood[edit]

These two pages have significant overlap, and I think it's better to merge them. Frankly, I don't see a point in having the second page being separate at all, since it covered more about the history of the Chinese Indonesians instead of focusing only on the "view of nationhood" issue. I am also concerned that it may be used as an outlet for certain political agenda. Otherwise, why have the page be separate from Indonesian Chinese? Thoughts? Glenmore, East Java[edit]

According to Richard Mann in his book titled The British in Indonesia, when Catholic Scots sought refuge in Holland they were sent to the East Indies instead. Does anybody know more about the history of the Scottish villages in Java? --Akarwangi 15:42, 19 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

From my research, Ewan Cameron 1738 to 1797 (died in Glen Nevis, Java) son of Alexander Cameron 1712 to 1774 and member of the Clan Cameron line of Clan Chiefs emigrated to East Java founding the plantations.

Origin of "Indonesia"[edit]

From Indonesian Indian:

The name Indonesia itself comes from the Latin Indus "India" and Greek nêsos "island" which literally means the ‘Indian archipelago’.

I thought Indo was Greek as well.[2].

My friend standing here (Davidbofinger) vaguely recalls that India, Sind and Indus all might come from the same root, (though Indo might still have come to "Indonesia" via Greek or Latin). Traditional forms of decision-making[edit]

I was looking at the article on Consensus, and thought - should there be something about Indonesian traditional decision-making here? The idea that traditionally decisions were made through discussion and consensus is one that I think Sukarno drew from, and one which I came across while reading about Indonesia and living there.

(I should add that I'm not necessarily agreeing with this golden view of the past. I strongly suspect that 1) certain people, especially women, would have been excluded, and 2) less influential people in a community would have afraid to do anything other than support the wishes of the more influential people. Look at what Sukarno ended up doing, in his "Guided democracy".)

Kartini[edit]

I recently translated the above Indonesian article into English. I really think that with a bit of work on it, it would make a great English featured article, especially if we collaborated with other groups such as the countering systemic bias, and the Netherlands regional board.

To summarise, Kartini wrote letters in Dutch to friends (whom she never met) which profoundly changed the way the Dutch establishment viewed their Dutch East Indian possessions and its people. She was a women with very strong opinions on the way women were treated in her culture, on the injustices of colonialism, on the hypocrises of religion. Ironically, she was also uniquely priviledged - she was allowed to attend school until the age of 12, she had a sympathetic father who allowed her to write to her friends in the Netherlands, and later a sympathetic husband who allowed her to set up a school to educate Indonesian women. She died in childbirth at the age of 25.

Would there be any interest in collaborating on this article to try and bring it up to FA status? There are so many thought-provoking strands that could come out of it that I think it is a worthy project. --Sepa 20:36, 9 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Indonesian Terms and Abbreviations[edit]

There are several inconsistencies among the various indonesian articles with regard to the various acronyms. I feel there is a need for consistency as life will get confusing otherwise. Can I suggest that we adopt the versions used by the Jakarta Post, Indonesia's English language newspaper, available at [3]. Incidentally the English version of the weekly news magazine Tempo uses the same list. On the same lines, both of these publications use the spellings 'Suharto' (rather then 'Soeharto') and 'Sukarno' (rather than 'Soekarno').

I agree that consistency is important, particularly with Acronyms and Abbreviations as they have no inherent meaning in themselves. With regards to the spelling of Suharto, Sukarno etc, I think in general articles it's a good idea to use the Su..form, but in literature related articles, I think I would prefer to see the form that is used in the piece of literature.
Actually, I have created a [List of Indonesian acronyms and abbreviations], which has the acronym, the Indonesian/Dutch name, the English translation, and a short explanation if I still feel it's required. Oops! Help. Nahdatul Ulama[edit]

Sorry, I've got into a pickle. Spotting a red link, I created a stub yesterday called Nadhatul Ulama as a place marker until I had time to add more detail. Then I realized it was spellt differently on another page, so created another page called Nadhalatul Ulama. Tragically I then realised that a page called Nahdatul Ulama, also a stub but rather better than my effort, already existed and that Nahdlatul Ulama automatically linked to it anyway (at least two spellings exist, but I invented a new one as well).

Following the rule that if you're in a hole, stop digging, I turned off my computer and went to bed before I wrecked the Indonesian history and politics pages in their entirety. Could somebody help by deleting Nadhalatul Ulama and Nadhatul Ulama, but not Nahdatul Ulama? Sorry. Davidelit

I think we should separate Hindu Revival in Indonesia and Agama Hindu Dharma. Regencies, Cities, and Provinces Name[edit]

In Indonesia, there are many subnational entities which have the same name. I propose to stardardize Indonesian regencies/cities/provinces articles name as follows:

Does indonesian law apply to wikipedia? Wikimedia foundation is in the US. Of course PD-IDGov tag is valid(because Indonesian government can release its own works to public domain), but what about the two others? But i don't know law very much. As far as I know, the license tag applies for where the image was published. The other two are the law for old images. Copyright image duration varies between countries. For example, images taken by a Dutch photographer, although it was taken in Indonesia, follows the Netherland's rule, i.e. having duration of 70 years after the death of the photographer. Take a look at this image Image:Gedung.Merdeka.jpg which somebody requested for a deletion because of the Dutch law. For Indonesia, the law states that the duration of images is 50 years after the death of the author. Krakatoa eruption of CE 535[edit]

November 2, 2006 -- In the entry on Krakatoa, I find this text...

416 AD event 

 The Javanese Book of Kings (Pustaka Raja) records that in the 
 year 338 Saka (416 AD) "A thundering sound was heard from the
 mountain Batuwara ... a similar noise from Kapi ... The whole
 world was greatly shaken and violent thundering, accompanied
 by heavy rain and storms took place, but not only did not this
 heavy rain extinguish the eruption of the fire of the mountain
 Kapi, but augmented the fire; the noise was fearful, at last
 the mountain Kapi with a tremendous roar burst into pieces and
 sank into the deepest of the earth. The water of the sea rose
 and inundated the land, the country to the east of the mountain
 Batuwara, to the mountain Raja Basa, was inundated by the sea;
 the inhabitants of the northern part of the Sunda country to the
 mountain Raja Basa were drowned and swept away with all property[3]
 ... The water subsided but the land on which Kapi stood became sea,
 and Java and Sumatra were divided into two parts." There is no
 geological evidence of a Krakatoa eruption of this size around
 that time; it may describe loss of land that previously joined
 Java to Sumatra across what is now the narrow east end of the Sunda
 Strait; or it may be a mistaken date, referring to an eruption
 in 535 AD, also referred to in the Javanese Book of Kings, and
 for which there is geological and some corroborating historical evidence.

In the Pararaton (Javanese Book of Kings) entry, this text begins the article... 

  The Pararaton, also known as the Book of Kings, is a manuscript
  in the Kawi language. The comparatively short text of 32 folio-size
  pages (1126 lines) contains the history of the kings of Singhasari
  and Majapahit in eastern Java.

  It is also called "Pustaka Raja", which is Sanskrit for "book king",
  or likelier "book of kings" as two Sanskrit words put together
  by the rules of Indonesian grammar.

  Since the oldest colophon in the manuscripts contains the date
  1522 Saka (A.D.1600), the final part of the text must have been
  written between A.D. 1481 and 1600,
  presumably closer to the first date than to the second date.

I'm trying to find out the logic behind the line in the Pararaton article that leads to the 119-year difference between 1481 AD and 1600 AD. Is that a specific period of uncertainty in the dates to which the Pararaton refers, or what? I ask because I noticed that the period from 416 AD (Pararaton claims Krakatoa erupted violently) and 535 AD (when other evidence says it occurred) is also 119 years, and I consider the appearance in two places of the same difference in time to be exceptional.

On English wikipedia, you need to take their generally accepted English terms - but there is no reason why their other names (Indonesian) cannot also be mentioned in the lead. We need to be careful not trying to re-write history or changing one POV term into another POV term. Pointless. Let the articles speak for themselves.
