National Invasive Species Awareness Week Wikipedia Edit-a-thon

Invasive species are plants, animals, or pathogens that are non-native to the ecosystem under consideration, and whose introduction causes or is likely to cause harm. Human actions are the primary means of invasive species introductions, and they can be introduced to an area intentionally or unintentionally. Some examples of introduction pathways are ship ballast water, firewood, escaped ornamental plants, and escaped or released pets. Invasive species can lead to the extinction of native plants and animals, destroy biodiversity, and permanently alter habitats. Some species have become so common that they are not easily recognized as invasive and the underlying damage to the ecosystems has been overlooked. Join the National Agricultural Library’s National Invasive Species Information Centerto learn more about invasive species, their effects, and their control as we celebrate National Invasive Species Awareness week.

The event will begin with an introduction and information about the NISIC from Joyce Bolton, lead of the information center. Followed by guest speaker, Chuck Bargeron, Co-Director of the Center for Invasive Species and Ecosystem Health at the University of Georgia. Then, Jamie Flood, Wikipedian-in-residence of National Agricultural Library and Ariel Cetrone of Wikimedia D.C. will lead a one-hour training on Wikipedia editing and we will spend the rest of the day updating invasive species articles on Wikipedia. Later in the afternoon, Kirstin Nelson, NAL's Law Librarian, will offer an overview and question and answer session about the major laws related to Invasive Species and the impacts of those laws. During the event experienced editors will be on hand to assist and answer questions.

Wikipedia is an openly editable resource, meaning that you can improve the quality and accuracy of Wikipedia entries. As one of the web’s most visited reference sites, Wikipedia serves as a starting point for many individuals looking to learn about art, history, and science.
During this training, attendees of all experience levels will learn the basics of how to edit Wikipedia by updating articles related
