Initial discussion[edit]

Proposal for a UK meetup - please add your name and preferred location(s), if any, if you're interested:

  1. North West area preferable, but can probably go anywhere with effort... Majorly (talk) 23:51, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  2. I'd suggest Birmingham for ease of access for everyone. Ryan Postlethwaite 23:52, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  3. Anywhere really, but preferably central England. Will (aka Wimt) 23:55, 12 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Anywhere in the south and London. LordHarris 13:37, 21 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  5. Would prefer somewhere relatively easily accessible from the East Midlands but not too fussed. Adambro 14:37, 22 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  6. South would be preferable, but would travel as long as it's not in the middle of nowhere. - Zeibura (Talk) 23:53, 30 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  7. Fairly flexible, but Midlands would be better. ELIMINATORJR TALK 13:26, 1 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  8. I would like to see it hosted in or near London, if not in Central London then perhaps in the commercial and easily-accessible district of the M4 Corridor (the industrial area between the M25 motorway and the M4 motorway). --Queer As Folk 14:57, 3 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  9. Obviously, London is ideally for me, but we seem to have a fair few Northern fellas here. Birmingham as a compromise sounds Ok, grim as the architecture is :) London preferred, though. Early September? Late August is not so good for me, I have tournament commitments. Moreschi Talk 15:37, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  10. I'm in North Wales, so a strong preference for North West England. North or Central England would also be acceptable but London is too far really. Preferably not in September (especially mid), but I'm pretty free the rest of this year. —Joe Llywelyn Griffith Blakesley talk contrib 16:23, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  11. Interested, but London in December is more realistic for me than Birmingham or Manchester in October. BencherliteTalk 17:23, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If we want the North, I think that Manchester would be a better option (and not just because I have friends there I can crash with). It had much better access by road and, more importantly, by train. It essentially makes no difference for people in the south because they will have to travel for hours anyway, and the longer distance versus better travel links cancel each other out, but people int he North will find it much more convenient. Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 15:18, 9 August 2007 (UTC) Midlands seems to be the most popular choice. Since I don't live there, could anyone make any suggestions? Majorly (talk) 21:56, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • I'm no expert on Birmingham, but somewhere central would be ideal, near the station if possible. Ryan Postlethwaite 21:59, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The last one in Birmingham was held at a Wetherspoons bar near all 3 stations (see this), so I suppose that's still a possibility. I don't know much about Birmingham either, so can't really add anything. - Zeibura (Talk) 23:01, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Birmingham sounds good to me, easily accessible from pretty much everywhere but I'm still open to other locations including London but that would be more difficult for people from the north. Any suggestions as to a date? Adambro 12:28, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
End of August/early September would be good. Majorly (talk) 13:05, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

It depends when it will be, but at most times, I'm in the North East. If it's this month, then London would probably work fairly well, too, since my girlfriend will be there and I can combine meeting Wikipedians with meeting her. We do have an advantage over most countries in being fairly small, though - I can get pretty much anywhere on the train fairly cheaply (assuming we arrange a date far enough in advance) and fairly quickly. --Tango 13:52, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  • Anywhere, but especially the birmingham-london-swindon triangle or manchester (either would be ideal). Any dates after Fri Aug 24 work for me, with a few long term exceptions (Sept 3, 12-14, 21-22) that are prebooked :) 87.127.119.101 18:22, 9 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • Regarding dates, I'd think I'd have to have something further in the future, say October or later. Planning something further ahead would also I suspect increase the attendance as more people are likely to hear about it and make sure other commitments fit round it. Adambro 20:46, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
    I agree, there's no hurry. Majorly (talk) 21:01, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  • I can possibly go if it's a Saturday or Sunday. Birmingham should be possible (it isn't too far from Oxford) but under University rules I wouldn't be allowed to go on a weekday. WaltonOne 14:21, 1 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  2. Second choice - Zeibura (Talk) 17:09, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  3. This would be my preference - Virgin Trains do a fair few services there a day, and it's also very accessible by the Wikipedians from other areas (London in particular). Anthøny 17:24, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
  4. Second choice. Moreschi Talk 17:54, 11 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

  8. Joint first choice because although I could not make it (does that disqualify me?) I think it's reasonably central. I also have sentimental attachments to Manchester but it isn't as good for geographical reasons. London for December?[edit]

According to this mailing list post, Jimmy Wales will be in London on December 4th. I think it would make sense to have a meetup in London then, and I propose making the destination this time Birmingham - it is probably the best place, nice and central and easy to get to, and the majority so far have voted to have it there. There was a meetup in Manchester in June, so I think it's only fair it's Birmingham this time. Thoughts? Majorly (talk) 16:38, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Sounds like a plan. Birmingham seems to be winning here after all. What sort of time are we going to make this one then, September? - Zeibura (Talk) 17:36, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks for bringing that to our attention Majorly, based upon Jimmy's comments, a London meetup to fit in with his visit sounds like a good plan. On that basis, Birmingham would probably be the best choice for a meetup before London in December and it appears to be a location that many are happy with. Now I should be able to make London in December but I'm doubtful about this meetup due to being busy over the next month or so. A bit later in the year, say late October, would probably be okay by me and allow plenty of time to advertise the plans both here and on other Wikimedia projects as appropriate. Adambro 18:30, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Dec 4th is a Tuesday. There's no way I can travel to London in the middle of the week, and I imagine the same is true of a lot of people. --Tango 19:54, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I'd note that Jimmy says he'll be in London a couple of days both before and after the 4th. Also, the intention seems not to be to replace this proposed meet with an event in December to coincide with Jimmy's plans, rather as well as. I'm sure there would be a reasonable number able to make any date that Jimmy would suggest as appropriate. Adambro 20:06, 13 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Date vote[edit]

London for December would be better, and so Birmingham would be the location discussed now, according to above vote. We need to work out a suitable date. I'm guessing most will prefer weekends, so I'll put down the next few weekend date, and people can sign underneath if they'll be available.

Added 15/16 September. 3 weeks away, and may be too soon for some. Felt worthwhile checking. The Random Named 10:20, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I don't wish to go through saying when I will and won't be available because I can't be certain, but I can say that September won't be possible for me but mid to late October should be okay. Saturday would be greatly preferred. Adambro 12:34, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Available for everything except the 15th and 16th of September. Moreschi Talk 14:48, 26 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I know at the moment, I'm available for any weekend. --Tango 17:37, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I could only do Saturdays. Neil  13:04, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
No Idea if I could make any given date but Saturdays more likely. Suggest october dates to give warning.Geni 22:56, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
At the moment, Saturday 20th October looks to be the best bet. I suggest we give people until Friday to add/change votes before marking it as final and putting things in place. Thryduulf 17:41, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Not the 27th? Majorly (talk) 17:51, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Whatever day, a Saturday is vital cos I've got to stay the night and some disabled students aren't going to get to their lectures unless I push them there. :) Dev920 (Have a nice day!) 18:54, 10 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Anyone got a list of things that need to be photed in whatever city the meetup is planed for?Geni 13:35, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The meetup being discussed is Birmingham. I'll move this page to make this clearer. Majorly (talk) 13:54, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Birmingham then. Bits of the BCN need pics but that could be tricky.Geni 14:11, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Pictures? Birmingham? I mean, really...Moreschi Talk 14:12, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Depending on how people get there Gravelly Hill Interchange needs more pics. Birmingham Canal Navigations again. Castle Vale could do with more.Birmingham Botanical Gardens (United Kingdom) definetly. A better pic for Barber Institute of Fine Arts would be nice. Birmingham Central Mosque is another building that needs a pic.Geni 14:22, 28 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]
