Event description[edit]

Black Lunch Table mobilizes the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. The core activity of the BLT Wikimedians user group is edit-a-thons. It allows BLT as a user group to work together to increase the information and participation about and by our community. It also allows us to invite all editors to focus on the knowledge gap that exists around the lives and works of Black artists on the platform.

Recognizing that Wikipedia is not the only platform that lacks information about the lives of Black artists, the BLT Photo Booth increases images of Black artists on Wikimedia Commons. To make notable artists that fall in the Wiki gaps more visible, BLT invites professional photographers to host a pop-up portrait studio at events and make that work open license for free use, edit and distribution.

Please join A + F and BLT at Westwood Hall from 12-3 CST for your portrait.

About Art + Feminism: Year Ten![edit]

Art+Feminism is celebrating its tenth year in Houston with a symposium on Collective Action. During this year and this event, we’re reflecting on how communities have harnessed their collective power to address inequities and disenfranchisement.

The symposium is open to both virtual and in-person participants, open to both local and global attendees. It features Wikipedia editing workshops in collaboration with local cultural organizations, opportunities to make art, a Black Lunch Table Photo Booth, and interactive sessions with local organizers. Thanks to local partners Arte Público Press, Black Lunch Table, and SAID Pan-African Library.

Black Lunch Table (BLT) is a nonprofit and sixteen-year ongoing artist collaboration. Its primary aim has been the production of discursive sites, wherein cultural producers engage in dialogue on a variety of critical issues.

Black Lunch Table Wikimedians mobilize the creation and improvement of a specific set of Wikipedia articles that pertain to the lives and works of Black artists. In the field of mainstream contemporary art, Black artists are still marginalized within our field.

Wikipedia estimates that 77% of its editors are white and 91% men. Our work shifts this demographic and empowers people to write their own histories. Our sessions and events, including BLT Photobooth and edit-a-thons, equip new editors with the skills and resources to create, update, and improve Wikipedia articles and encourages existing editors to focus on filling Wikipedia knowledge gaps.
