Wikipedia:Meetup/Manchester 3/Archive

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Another meetup is planned for an upcoming month. Please sign below if you are interested in attending, and where you'd like it to be.

  • Manchester, preferably, but can manage most places with some effort. Majorly (talk) 16:18, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Edinburgh --Astral (talk) 16:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manchester - free space in my love palace if anyone needs a bed. Ryan Postlethwaite 16:22, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm in Southampton but that may be a bit too far for many. London would have been nice, however I'm happy if it's near a main-line railway station so no major issues with Manchester. Ryan's Love Palace sounds..... tempting worrying :). Pedro :  Chat  16:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • London, if you please. Moreschi If you've written a quality article... 16:53, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • London would be preferable, or Leeds or Sheffield, but may be able to travel to other places. - Zeibura (Talk) 16:57, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manchester Would be great, although Liverpool might be fun too. Manchester has very good connections to the rest of the country with trains to London, Birmingham, Glasgow etc.Pi
  • Manchester please - beer is cheaper! --Joopercoopers (talk) 17:06, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Birmingham- beer is cheap, and it's central. Merkinsmum 17:37, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manchester would really be my preferred place, as it is far cheaper for me to travel there from Stoke-on-Trent. However, I could cope with it being in Birmingham, but probably not so easily Liverpool or further afield.  DDStretch  (talk) 17:56, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm in the north east, so I'll suggest Newcastle (I'm actually in Durham, but Newcastle is easier to get to from more places). London would also work quite well for me (I have a sister there with a couch). Manchester and B'ham would be possible. --Tango (talk) 18:04, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • London is always the option which works best for me. Any idea of when the meetup is planned? I'll be in the U.K. in March. Jeffpw (talk) 18:09, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • I'm in Oxford during term time, but can travel if the meetup is at a weekend. WaltonOne 18:19, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • I think having it on a weekend is essential. I can't get anywhere further away than Newcastle during the week. --Tango (talk) 18:20, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • It will definitely be a weekend, probably a Saturday as that has always worked best in the past. Majorly (talk) 18:24, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Is this for anyone to attend, or just the "inner sanctum" LOL? I'd like to suggest Sheffield (just to be awkward) but Manchester or Birmingham (even Newcastle) wouldn't be incredibly difficult for me to get to. ~~ [Jam][talk] 19:59, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • Anyone is welcome to attend :) Majorly (talk) 20:46, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
      • Sounds good. Be nice to meet up with some of the other Wikipedia folk. Oh, and a vote for the weekend too - considering I'm a student :). ~~ [Jam][talk] 21:56, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Even though I won't be able to go, Manchester is the best bet. :) Rt. 21:48, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Shall we have these really cool badges? :) Anthøny 22:38, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
We should arrange some method of recognition - it proved a little challenging in B'ham (At least two, if not more, of us were at there for at least 10 minutes before finding each other...). --Tango (talk) 22:56, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Once we've decided where we're going, we can think of something. Hopefully tomorrow, this page has had a good turnout. Majorly (talk) 23:15, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Some of us got a Wikipedia T-shirt for their birthday so that's me sorted! Pedro :  Chat  23:18, 3 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Sheffield would be fantastic, but Manchester or Birmingham would also work well; London does tend to get the best turnouts, and I might be able to make it. Definitely a weekend; perhaps a Sunday? Warofdreams talk 00:50, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manchester would be my first pick, but Birmingham, Leeds, or Sheffield would be fine. Not Liverpool, please, it's a dump. I probably won't go if it's London, as it is a mission. Why is everybody wikilinking all the cities over and over? Neıl 11:26, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Cardiff preferably but then I am biased! I can get most places but only if there's enough notice so I can get a cheap train ticket :) --Farosdaughter (talk) 11:44, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Lets have it in manc... everyone can get there easily, anyone else I don't care about, you can all have your own one down south innit. braaaaaaaaaaaaaaaap. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.18.234.109 (talkcontribs) 17:29, 4 January 2008
  • Manchester only for me, I can't feasably get anywhere else due to other commitments. --Deskana (talk) 17:33, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manchester as long as theres cheap beer and food... DBAlex (talk) 17:34, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Portsmouth, Guildford, and Southampton are my nearest cities, but I think that would be an inconvenient place for most people. My favourite other choice is London, I can get there quite easily. Birmingham and Manchester are a little far but could be alright. I would prefer a weekend as I am a student. Camaron1 | Chris (talk) 17:42, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
    • After doing some research and thinking London is really the only likely candidate which is going to be realistically feasible for me to get to. Manchester, Sheffield and possibly Birmingham are to far and to expensive. Camaron1 | Chris (talk) 22:56, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • London would certainly be best for me; failing that, Birmingham and Sheffield would be feasible. Depending on the date, I might be able to make it as far afield as Manchester again, but I couldn't guarantee it. Will (aka Wimt) 21:43, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • London and the south. LordHarris 22:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Locations[edit]

City Advantages Disadvantages
Manchester Good transport links to Birmingham and the north, reasonable links to London More difficult to access from the east and south
London High local population, direct trains from most of UK A long way to travel for anyone in the north and Scotland
Birmingham Central The last Meetup was in Birmingham so maybe we should rotate
Edinburgh Long distance for anyone in south
Sheffield Fairly well placed within the UK for travel, good rail links
Cardiff Poorer train links than some places

Location decision[edit]

I calculate the top three places to be Manchester (15), Birmingham and London (7 each). Now, I may sound biased here, but in my opinion we should say the location is Manchester, and be done with it. Of course, it's the place I want it to be, so I'd like others' opinions here. Frankly though, I'd rather we picked a place asap and it's by far the most popular choice. Majorly (talk) 21:40, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have no problems with making this decision. - Zeibura (Talk) 22:02, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree. Clearly the most popular and relatively easy to get to from anywhere. Sooner we decide sooner people can plan. Adambro (talk) 22:35, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Yeh, I'd prefer Manchester over London. ~~ [Jam][talk] 22:36, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I'd prefer London over Manchester so would be keen to see that considered also. London is 45 mins on the train for me. Manchester would be more like 3 hours. When was the last London meetup? I understand there was discussion about December when Jimbo was supposed to be in town but I didn't hear any more. Perhaps we could have one in London, which is bound to attract a reasonable attendance, with a view to having another in Manchester later in the year. Adambro (talk) 22:53, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Aren't you in Huddersfield any more? Or did I miss the news about the express service to London while I was at home? lol. ~~ [Jam][talk] 22:58, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Let's put it to a vote: it was Birmingham last time, so we'll decide out of Manchester or London. Vote below (sorry for all the voting btw, I can't think of a better way)

I realy think that since we have had 5 meetups in london already it is about time we had one somewhere else.
Shall we add votes below on behalf of people who registered their intent above?

We had a Birmingham meetup, and a Manchester one. London is popular because it's more accessible to more people. Yes, we could add their vote, but that would be pointless because that would mean Manchester would get most, as I already counted above. Majorly (talk) 23:55, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

London[edit]

  • Majorly (talk) 23:02, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • best chance for getting people to spontainiously turn up.Geni 23:25, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preferred location but would still consider attending if in Manchester. Adambro (talk) 23:47, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preferred. - Zeibura (Talk) 23:50, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • 1st choice. WjBscribe 00:32, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • 2nd choice, but only marginally. --Tango (talk) 01:38, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • 1st choice. Camaron1 | Chris (talk) 10:52, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Preferred location, but possibly could get to Manchester too. Will (aka Wimt) 12:25, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Manchester is just looking a bit too expensive on trains, allhough cheap on beer :). It's also too much of a drive for one day. Pedro :  Chat  14:16, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Manchester[edit]

Manchester it is. For those who preferred London, a meet is being planned here. Majorly (talk) 16:34, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Date[edit]

Sorry to add this in early but the date will potentially affect the location. General agreeance in the past is that it must be a weekend, allowing for those with work or study commitments. However the date also affects the cost of travel by rail. Looking at it today I was getting best prices at around £80 for Southampton to Manchester, but this can be heavily discounted by early booking.

The following dates are realistic at present. Please sign under which days you can do.

Suggestions[edit]

2 February (Sat)[edit]

  • Majorly (talk) 21:18, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
  • Might be too soon for cheap tickets - especially if we take a while to finalise a time and place. --Tango (talk) 21:23, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Discussion[edit]

It appears that many people would be using the trains as I would be. Whilst there are of course trains on a Sunday, there are less so I think my preference of day would be Saturday. Adambro (talk) 21:26, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I'd have to agree with Adam. Saturday would be preferable over Sunday in terms of trains. ~~ [Jam][talk] 22:40, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I agree, sunday is complicated, i propose we stick to saturday dates.Pi
Oh, and in terms of dates, I can't do anything before the 9th Feb (exams and a dance competition on the 9th). I also can't confirm anything after then until I figure out when assignment hand-in dates are (which I won't know until February at the earliest). ~~ [Jam][talk] 22:41, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, depending on location, I can make all dates at present - but that may change shortly. Camaron1 | Chris (talk) 22:46, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Could be worth keeping an eye on http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/service_bulletins/currentAndFuture.html which details forthcoming planned railway engineering works. Adambro (talk) 22:48, 4 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Since the location is Manchester, I have removed myself from all dates. I am planning to attend the London one instead. Camaron1 | Chris (talk) 16:46, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If the date is now fixed as the 23 February, I won't be able to come :(. ~~ [Jam][talk] 18:29, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

23rd is the most popular, but we can wait a little longer maybe. It'll be sad if you can't come, but unfortunately we can't always get it right for everyone. There'll always be future meetups :) Majorly (talk) 19:03, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Don't hold up the planning just because I can't come :). If everyone else can make it, then go for it. I'm sure I'll be able to come to future ones. ~~ [Jam][talk] 19:09, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Ah OK, thanks. Still, it's sad you can't come. But, next time :) Majorly (talk) 19:25, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Proposal[edit]

I don't mean to be an autocrat but i propose the 23rd Feb in Manchester, there is quite a bit of support for both the date and the loation, plus as it is a saturday this makes trains easier. Any thoughts? Pi

I think we should give it a little more time, personally, although I'd be very happy with the above suggestion in the end. Majorly (talk) 00:02, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Give it a day or two, but if nothing major changes, I think that's a good decision. --Tango (talk) 01:40, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I wouldn't be able to do the 23rd (dancing competition in Warwick). ~~ [Jam][talk] 11:08, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
oooooh, slow down,:) I just got up and you want it settled already lol. Merkinsmum 13:33, 5 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Since the location has been decided as Manchester and 23/02 seems the most popular date, I think this would now be a good decision to make well in advance. - Zeibura (Talk) 17:35, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I agree. Majorly (talk) 19:25, 6 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]
