Event activities[edit]

This event invites its attendees to edit Wikipedia articles related to .... Since Wikipedia is a summary of what reliable publications have already reported, participants can prepare for the event by identifying information that they wish to share in reliable publications. Wikipedia's standard of reliability matches academic opinions, so if a university librarian would approve of a source, Wikipedia will also!

  1. Prepare before the event
    1. Please create a Wikipedia account before the event
    2. While logged into your Wikipedia account, join the program on the Wikipedia Dashboard
    3. Outside of Wikipedia, identify a publication which you find interesting and worthwhile to share
    4. Based on the publication you choose, take your own notes about some individual facts
  2. During the event
    1. Only after you have a publication to cite and some facts to share, browse relevant Wikipedia articles to see if this information is present
    2. If your information is not already in Wikipedia, then click the edit button at the top to add it.
    3. Be sure to use a citation after every sentence you add!

Note that before the event, your focus for preparation should be the research you do outside of Wikipedia for identifying good sources of information to cite!

Schedule[edit]

  • Presentation: We will have a short ‘how to’ intro on writing and editing Wikipedia entries for new editors.
  • Start writing: Stay for as long as you can and start writing/editing in good company and with help at hand.
  • Snacks: We will provide snacks as we go.
  • Who: We welcome anyone interested in writing more women in the built environment into Wikipedia. No Wikipedia editing experience is necessary. We will start with an overview of writing and editing Wikipedia article. We will also provide assistance throughout the event for Wikipedia newcomers. Experienced Wikipedians are also very welcome – we need as much help as you can offer!
