Meeting up in 2006?[edit]

Interested. How about Sunday the 5th of Feb? From the comments above, that should hopefully get us 6 people including myself (I'm assuming that novacatz's date range is inclusive rather than exclusive), plus any other Sydney Wikipedians that can come along. Location / Time[edit]

My suggestions: city (food, air conditioning, plenty of parks to lounge around and chat), a hike in the Blue Mountains? Wikimedia Australia planning is well under way, and currently the Melbourne guys have gotten their act together and figured things out. We do need to sort this out, one way or the other. Basically by Friday midday, we either need to have agreed on a time & place to meet, or to call it off. (To ensure that people have enough notice to plan accordingly). So, ideas: Coffee in Darling Harbour? Screaming in Luna Park? Lunch in Leichhardt? Anything in the Sydney Festival that grabs people? Shall we say 11:30 AM? Would that give some time for a wander around, and then yum cha? I'm pretty easy, so the main thing is just reach agreement on the time. Do we want to meet at Town Hall steps or Darling Harbour? (Those seem to be the two main contenders). Town Hall steps is well-known and is easy to reach by public transport, but there's no/limited parking. Personally, have a slight preference to driving if possible, which favours Darling Harbour, although Darling Harbour is harder to get to by public transport. This sounds great! I think 11:30am is a good time. We do need to finalize, and thus far I think everyone has indicated that they can do the Town Hall Steps (plus it's a very specific location, it's well-known, it's easy to reach by bus and train, and it's only a short walk from Chinatown), and nobody has said that 11:30 AM is a bad time. So, given we need to finalize the details, I'm going to just go ahead and add a note above with this time and place. Some stuff to discuss[edit]

  • Wikimedia Australia planning (first I've heard about it, love to hear more).
  • Keeping an eye out for copyright violations (seeing more of these lately in Sydney suburb articles).
    • I hadn't heard about this. Should it be mentioned on the noticeboard?
      • It's not a huge deal, I've just noticed it occasionally in material added by new users or anons that's not too good (e.g. Concord, Lilli Pilli, Kellyville, and Baulkham Hills are some that either have had copyright violations, or currently have suspicious content which is being investigated). It's more just a note that if you see something that's too good and that reads like copied text, then it probably is, and if you see it you should revert it (if you get a google match), or check it out if you're not sure (e.g. most copyvio content for suburbs is copied from the local council, or occasionally from local community sites). That's all I'm saying.
  • Removing some of the redlinks from Local Government areas (usually by deleting the suburbs)
  • Anything from the Wikinews folks?
  • Do we want to make Sydney meetups a semi-regular occurrence (e.g. once every 6 months?)
  • Any Sydney-related areas where we feel the Wikipedia is particularly weak / can be expanded upon.
  • Any particularly unusual articles that people got a laugh out of.
  • Wikipedia articles we're working on?
  • ... Please free to add more stuff here ...
