His life may make thee gold, and much more, just.

George Herbert (1593–1633), The Temple: Sacred Poems and Private Ejaculations (1633), "Easter". It would be nice to have this nomination approved for next Sunday, "Easter Sunday", the 24th of April 2011. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 09:05, 22 April 2011 (UTC)

  • Comment - I hate to be the one to bring this up, but it seems a bit sacrilegious. Like comparing "his" life to Wikipedia, etc. Just might rub some people the wrong way. The quote is beautiful and well linked other than that. PrincessofLlyr royal court 15:37, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
    • Reply ~ Yes, I think the same as you (even if it was not my intention to be sacrilegious but the opposite.) What about using WP:DEV for "his life" ... well probably we will have about the same "sacrilegious" problem. And, a more generic and bland, but still valid: "Happy Easter from MOTD"??? –pjoef (talkcontribs) 16:28, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
      • I didn't think you were trying to be sacrilegious...in fact, outside of a WP context, I really love the quote. The linking itself, in a traditional MOTD style, is fine. It's just that it seems to make light of the occasion. Besides, even if we used this quote, someone would probably be annoyed with the religious reference. The generic "happy easter" may be the best way to go. PrincessofLlyr royal court 19:07, 22 April 2011 (UTC)
  • Oppose - I think that I need to agree with Ms. Llyr in this. I'll see if I can dig up a quote. ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 20:11, 23 April 2011 (UTC)

Reply- Look Kayau, I'm also tired of linking Wikipedia to America, but this quote was the only one about Cinco de Mayo that was decent; the rest were either racist or didn't stick to the subject. If I find a better quote, I'll put it up. Secret Saturdays (talk to me) 03:40, 14 July 2010 (UTC)

  • Support for regular motto90th birthday ~ I do not think it's a good idea to commemorate Humphrey Lyttelton on MOTD, even if he was a great and towering figure in the history of BBC Radio 2 and 4 and an excellent trumpeter, bandleader, broadcaster, calligrapher, cartoonist, journalist, writer,... an all around person. This year is the bicentenary of the birth of Frédéric Chopin (1 March 1810 – 17 October 1849), but we did nothing for the 1st of March. There are hundreds of classical music composers. Then we need to add thousands of Jazz, Rock, Pop,... artists. And what about all the writers, philosophers, scientists, and etcetera??? –pjoef (talkcontribs) 11:24, 20 September 2010 (UTC)

  • Support - I think that this would be great. The game is widely known, and the phrase is quite famous (at least in the region I live in.). However isn't the exact quote "My life for Aiur"? • Comment - I did some digging, and it looks as though this will come out in late 2012 or early 2013. That appears to just be a guess. Besides the fact that the majority of people wouldn't get it (I definitely didn't until I dug around), and the fact that it probably wouldn't stand as a regular nomination, it is two years away when this would be used. Could this just be declined, and then you can renominate it when it gets closer, and when we actually have a date for this? ~~ Hi878 (Come shout at me!) 02:41, 6 January 2011 (UTC)

      • I don't agree with the saying itself (since Doctrine of the Mean is a Confucian classic ;) but that doesn't matter. And having too much food and not enough are just the same. I just don't think being way too bold is better than doing nothing. Kayau Voting IS evil 10:36, 25 March 2011 (UTC)

I'm wondering if anyone could think of a good translation for 忍一時風平浪靜,退一步海闊天空。The best I can think of is 'If you tolerate for a moment, the winds will stop and the waves will be quiet; if you take a step back, the sea will be as wide as the sky.' My Chinese is awful, but here's a handful of attempts (varying from accurate translation to accurate sentiment; it's hard to do both and be comprehensible!)

  • Stand strong for a moment and the storm will abate; step back and the sea will mirror the sky.
  • Take a moment's stand and the waves will be quiet; take a step back and the ocean will be calm.
  • A moment's endurance will quiet the storm; a step back will silence the sea.
  • A moment's endurance will bring respite; a step back will bring peace.

  • Weak Support ~ this is The Golden Rule, or, more precisely, its negative form or the Silver Rule. Even if it is one of the most important maxims/rules in our world, and one of the most basic concepts in our society, I think it has been used before many times in its different forms. For this reason I give it a weak support. –pjoef (talkcontribs) 08:15, 15 March 2011 (UTC)

Try to see the forest for the trees

Try to look at the bigger picture, not just how something's being viewed right now. Also considering having it link to WP:UNDUE.--Yaksar (let's chat) 19:02, 8 February 2011 (UTC)

Growing old is compulsory, Growing up is optional

I've heard this quite a few times before. I thought it would be good.. Thomas888b (Say Hi) 17:29, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Great quote! Can you think of any Wikipedia links that apply and add those? We normally don't approve mottoes with no links. PrincessofLlyr royal court 18:17, 22 February 2011 (UTC)

Terrific! Use that as the second link, and I think it would be fine. PrincessofLlyr royal court 22:06, 5 March 2011 (UTC)
