Sandberg Prize

For whom is the Sandberg Prize named? Is it Mordecai Sandberg? I could not find any information about this in English. If it's named for him, that should be added to the article with a good reference (one in Hebrew would be OK if it's not documented anywhere in English). Jerusalem as part of 'Arab states'

Please have a look at the discussion over at List of World Heritage Sites in the Arab States - where some editors insist we list the Old City of Jerusalem in this list, despite the clear efforts of UNESCO to avoid listing it as being part of any state -Arab or Isreal. The specific state name is not listed, likely because it is not clear whether it is Jordan or the Palestinian National Authority who will oversee the site after final status negotiations. It is however clear that the region is listed as "ARB", unlike the Old City of Acre and Tel Aviv which are listed as "EUR" (Europe) and the state as "IL" (Israel). Eleland's footnote explaining the issue is NPOV and appropriate. I don't understand why we should ignore that UNESCO lists the site as part of the Arab region. That seems rather significant, no? The specific name is not listed, becuase the official UNESCO position is that it is not in nay state. In the future, it might someday be in Jordan, or in a Palestinian state, or, as is more likely per recent proposal, in Israel. Your comment regarding Acre and Tel Aviv is actually quite illuminating with regards to this discussion. If you look at List of World Heritage Sites in Europe, you will not see either one of these, nor will you see Masada, any of the biblical Tels or the Nabatean cities. This is not because some anti-Israeli bigot removed them, but rather for the mundane reason that the list is called List of World Heritage Sites '''in Europe''', and UNESCO's listing of Tel Aviv in the "EUR" region does not magically change geography and move Tel Aviv or Acre into Europe. Similarly, UNESCO's listing of Old Jerusalem in the "ARB" region does not magically change geography or decide legal issues, and certainly does not override UNESCO"s own stated position that by accepting the Jordanian application, it is not making any political statement and is not deciding anything with regards to sovereignty. Second intifada

I wanted to wikify the Template:Campaignbox Second Intifada, and found both 2007-2008 Israel-Gaza conflict and 2008 Israel-Gaza conflict. I posted messages on their talkpages suggesting a partial merge, but they were not answered as yet. Then there's also Israel-Gaza conflict and Violence in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict 2008, and maybe others as well. Some are pretty messy not quite updated - none mention Mercaz HaRav massacre, for instance. Any ideas? -- Nudve (talk) 04:48, 22 March 2008 (UTC)

I think that 2006, 2007, 2008 etc. articles for the Israel-Gaza conflict are not necessary. IMO, there should only be 3 categories of article:
1) Israel-Gaza conflict, the most important article outlining the conflict and including info from the current 2006-8 versions
2) YYYY in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, which would be more like a timeline, similar to other YYYY in X articles common on Wikipedia.
3) Individual notable event articles, like Operation Hot Winter and Mercaz HaRav Massacre
All other articles are IMO not necessary and should be merged. Thanks for bringing up this issue to the attention of other editors on WP:Israel, and hopefully we will introduce order into this series of articles.

I'm trying to reach Tewfik by e-mail now, because he doesn't seem to be active on Wikipedia since December 2007. He would be the ideal user to perform these tasks. Right now I think the only other Israeli users who edit conflict-related articles are Michael Safyan and Jaakobou. I don't tend to edit the conflict-related articles beyond occasional corrections/formatting (largely due to the reason and editors mentioned by Ynhockey), but I would also agree that a merger between the three Gaza conflict articles is a good idea, and with Ynhockey on the rest of the stuff (aside from bringing back Tewfik - I was quite glad when his contributions ended, as I'm afraid that he was not entirely capable of stickig to NPOV). Hebrew naming conventions (again)

Yes, we're back on that subject again - after nearly 3 years of trying fruitlessly to create this important guideline for Wikipedia, and in fact operating by an unwritten draft thereof for a couple years now, I've finally formulated a final draft which seems to encompass the general consensus. Just notifying everyone about it (link: Wikipedia:Naming conventions (Hebrew) (WP:HE)). Image copyright

If any WP:israel members are interested, I uploaded a series of PD domain images from 1897 under the pre-1923 rule, but that does not let them be uploaded into the commons. I'd like to get them uploaded there, but I cannot figure out the copyright law of these images (for Switzerland [except the first one, which is Germany and 1898)). Roi Rutenberg

This article has a long unsourced euology by Moshe Dayan on it. A source I found online said: "Moshe Dayan, eulogy after Roi Rutenberg at Kibbutz Nahal Oz, 1956, quoted in Uri Avneri, Israel Without Zionists: A Plan for Peace in the Middle East, New York: Collier Books, Macmillan, 1974, p. 154" I was wondering if anyone can help to verify the words from that text or any other text. The Return to Zion could use a lot of work, although I think it's more within the scope (and expertise) of WP:JH.
As for Gathering of Israel however, I'm afraid it might be unsalvageable: It relies completely on a pro-Israel propaganda site, and is an inappropriate mixture of biblical prophecies with modern Israeli history. I'd propose deletion. -- Nudve (talk) 05:44, 3 June 2008 (UTC)

Help with Hebrew spelling

I've just added a short article on an Israeli-built aircraft, the IAI Searcher. The article that I split it off from gave its Hebrew name as Meyromit - "High Flier". Could somebody here please transliterate Meyromit for me back to the Hebrew alphabet? I thought it might be מירמת - am I close?. Cheers --Rlandmann (talk) 22:30, 17 June 2008 (UTC)

It's "מרומית". The "high ...er" translation may be ok, but the word has a more specific meaning - a certain bird, apparently from the Chlidonias genus ( http://www.ynet.co.il/yaan/0,7340,L-238520-PreYaan,00.html ). Some foreign sources do refer to Searcher as 'Meyromit" ( http://www.janes.com/extracts/extract/juav/juav1299.html ). However, I've yet to see a hebrew source that mentions the name. The official IAF name for Searcher is "Hugla" ("חוגלה" , Alectoris). Bukvoed (talk) 07:50, 18 June 2008 (UTC)

Allegations & Analogies & Apartheid

Is it really appropriate or necessary to have two of these inflammatory articles? Israel and the apartheid analogy / Allegations of apartheid? It strikes me that UN Res 181 [3] requires that Israel honor and respect the language culture and religion of the local Arab population, thus in a sense the UN requires an "apartheid" or "separation" of the two cultures. As for the issue of the "apartheid" or "separation" wall, we have that throughout the world, Saudis/Yemen, Egypt/Gaza, US/Mexico Tundrabuggy (talk) 15:27, 3 July 2008 (UTC)

Ironic. "Allegations of Apartheid" was created by "pro-Israel" editors, to sort of deflect from the Israel issue by saying, "Hey, look! Everybody gets accused of apartheid, so it's not really serious, is it?" Your argument about UN 181 is at least original, although it has nothing to do with anything. Anyway yes, "allegations of apartheid" should be deleted, as there are no sources that actually discuss "allegations of apartheid" as an issue in itself, there is just a scraping of various academic / political sources which happen to use the word "apartheid" in passing as an epithet describing this or that nasty situation. (If anybody can find something like an academic monograph called "Apartheid: The 'A-Word' in Activist Discourse" I could be convinced otherwise.) <eleland/talkedits> 17:43, 3 July 2008 (UTC)
I am sorry you can't appreciate the significance of UN181 in relation to concepts of "apartheid," but no matter. I would suggest that the apartheid system in most Arab countries visa vis Jews would be an improvement from the current situation, which currently is more like an ethnic cleansing. In what ways do Jews enjoy the same rights in Arab countries as Arabs do in Israel, in particular in what is now referred to as Palestine, or perhaps Jordan, for example? Why then do we discuss "apartheid" in Israel but not in Arab countries? It strikes me as a major contradiction and double standard. At any rate, I don't think this is the place to further the discussion because the argument has been amply chewed over in the archives of the two articles, and this is a noticeboard. Help request: 417 Israel-related articles needing geographical coordinates

Based on a search of Wikipedia's articles related to Israel, I've found some articles that I believe are about places in Israel, and could usefully have geographical coordinates added.

The articles in question are listed in Category:Israel articles missing geocoordinate data. At the time of writing, some examples included:

  1. Drom HaSharon Regional Council
  2. Fatima Gate
  3. Israeli National Maritime Museum
  4. Kamanneh
  5. Kfar Brandeis
  6. Maoz Haim
  7. Neiel

...and there are many more, as well. At the time of posting this notice, there were 417 articles in this category needing geographical coordinates.

Why add coordinates?

By adding coordinates, a Wikipedia reader can easily view the location on a street map, nautical chart, topographic map, by satellite photo, realtime weather map, and in many other ways. Coordinate data makes an article eventually appear in various services such as Google Maps' Wikipedia overlay, Google Earth, and Wikipedia's own internal map service. Coordinate data also helps readers looking for geographically-based data, such as locations near a reference point, or related information.

How can I do it?

The articles are all marked with {{coord missing}} tags, which need to be replaced with {{coord}} tags that contain the location's latitude/longitude coordinates; or you might be able to add coordinates to an existing infobox. You can find out how to do this at the Wikipedia:Geocoding how-to for WikiProject members.

Hummus

Request that editors review a number of recent additions to the Hummus article; specifically references to Israel in the Serving methods section. While most of the information is legitimately sourced, there is some question over whether the extensive use of quotes (and the sources of those quotes, ie: Joseph Massad etc) is causing the article to take on a bias tone, and effectively violate WP:NPOV. --Nsaum75 (talk) 02:50, 2 December 2008 (UTC)

  • Hummus has been protected until 5 Dec. 08, due to an edit war and issues under the Israel-Palestine Arbitration case. Among things being debated are: 1) the correct terminology for Palestine 2) whether or not to include sourced info that refers to Israel's adoption of hummus as the "Zionist Enterprise's" attempt to reject food from the Diaspora and 3) whether or not mention should be made of sourced info that states Jews adopted hummus because they wanted to forget their "Humiliating past in Europe" [4].
