Indian movies[edit]

I noticed that two Indian movies showed that the widow ladies in Water and Chokher Bali didn't wear a shirt or blouse underneath the sari. Is this how it was back in the old days or they just made it up?

Still, women in some parts of India don't wear cholis - this page (POSSIBLY NSFW, and scroll down a bit) has some interesting information (if anecdotal). Natgoo 18:01, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Number of Oscars awarded[edit]

Someone help me out, please: I count a mere 24 Oscar categories, here in Wikipedia as well as the official site's complete list. Is it just my own perception that many, many more Oscars than that are actually awarded each year? I'm having trouble accepting this: 11 awards were issued at the first Academy Awards in the late 20s, and despite the incredible advancements in film, the numerous roles so many people play in each film, there are only 13 additional awards added (so to speak, I realize they're not quite identical) over the past four decades? Especially from an industry so good at congratulating themselves? Even my wife, a rabid film fan, is a bit incredulous. Is this simply the number of Oscars awarded at the actual award ceremony? Any help? Wolfgangus 07:19, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well, there are several additional awards handed out each year: The Academy Honorary Award, the Academy Special Achievement Award, the Academy Award, Scientific or Technical, The Irving G. Thalberg Memorial Award, The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Gordon E. Sawyer Award. Also the annual ceremony is drawn out to great lengths, and once you include all the nominees, the host, the presenters, the big fuss about who is wearing what ... you get a significant cross-section of celebrities in film, which might subjectively also make it seem more than just 24 recipients (many of which are not celebrities). ---Sluzzelin 07:32, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

OK - so there isn't a much quieter presentation going on for, say, the very technical side of the industry, or if there is, it isn't an Academy/Oscar affair. Maybe the perception is also coming from something rather basic - while only one person can win a Best Actor Oscar, a number of them can win - rather, are awarded - for some of the other categories. In other words, to find out how many actual Oscars have been awarded historically, you can't simply do the math -- categories x years. This would explain the seeming disparity between that supposed number and the numerous people in the industry who can call themselves 'Academy Award winning [title]'. Am I making sense here? it's 240 AM local ...Wolfgangus 08:39, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Absolute sense. Academy Award for Writing Original Screenplay, for instance, is often awarded to two, three, four, and even more authors at once (for the same screenplay, of course). Yet it counts as one "Oscar" in the sense of awarded category. ---Sluzzelin 08:51, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

All right -- thanks so much, Sluzzelin. I'm very grateful. Wolfgangus 09:17, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Also, some awards are created and discontinued depending on the direction the industry is moving (See Academy Award#Retired Awards). − Twas Now ( talkcontribse-mail ) 19:19, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

There is a "much quieter presentation going on for the very technical side of the industry", and it is run by the Academy, but the awards are not Oscars. The Oscar broadcast usually includes a brief spot where they talk about the scientific and technical awards. --Anonymous, February 9, 2007, 23:03 (UTC).

There have been suggestions recently about adding new Oscars, most particularly, for casting, but those have been shot down by the Academy. Corvus cornix 03:33, 10 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Author seeking info: Mary MacCormick/Pola Negri/Serge Mdivani[edit]

Does anyone have information on opera singer Mary MacCormick? I am writing an autobiography on silent film star Pola Negri who married Serge Mdivani. When they divorced, he married Mary MacCormick, later divorcing her. Thank you Tony56 14:42, 9 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Have you removed the giant slab from out of the way? If not, stand next to the slab and warp to the Bridge of Eldin; this gets the rock out of the way and reveals the Poe. Laïka 16:12, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

pop Greek music[edit]

Good afternoon~

I am looking for a Greek song for my music ed class. I have to provide lyrics in Greek and English, a recording of the song, and the source. I was able to find some Greek music but it was dated and I am looking for something more 21st century.

Anything will be greatly appreciated.
