Re; Play length of one side of 33⅓ long playing records.[edit]

What was the maximum amount of audio that could be pressed on one side of an l.p. album, and were there any known record company policies regarding that? There is a unreferenced statement about this in the Wikipedia article on Stevie Nicks,1975-78:Fleetwood Mac and Rumours section paragraph five. "Nicks had also written and recorded the song "Silver Springs", but it was ultimately not included on the album because of space limitations for studio albums on vinyl records, which were limited to 24 minutes per side". I know that l.p.'s were released with more than 24 mins. on a side ,but I don't have any citable references handy, other than actual l.p. records that I bought in that era.Jonel469 (talk) 02:50, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

I have a London Records FFRR LP, bought about 1980, with Beethoven's 5th Symphony on one side and the 8th Symphony on the other side (Vienna Philharmonic conducted by Hans Schmidt-Isserstedt). No timings are given, so I timed it myself, and found that this version of the 5th is no less than 34 minutes long. (The other side is 27 minutes 30 seconds.) So still not a citeable reference, but a better starting point than "more than 24 minutes". The record sleeve claims that the LP uses a patented high-fidelity techinque called full frequency range recording but nothing says that any special method was required to fit this length on one side. --50.100.189.160 (talk) 05:44, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
According to LP record, the longest LP produced was Dream House 78' 17" by La Monte Young, and several other records with over an hour's running time are listed. Tevildo (talk) 07:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Wow thanks, since asking this I read the Wikipedia article: LP record, and I learned a thing or two. Jonel469 (talk) 12:26, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes, LP records are typically quite old, so it's high time they learned a thing or two. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:06, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Yes and the same can be said of me, or did You just do that ?  :-) Jonel469 (talk) 16:12, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Learning has occurred. Happiness reigns.  :) -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 20:10, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In general it is possible to make spoken-word LPs with longer running time than music, because the loss of audio fidelity is much less when the grooves are compressed. I have spoken-word LPs with 45 mins of speech per side. --Viennese Waltz 13:13, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Spoken word records running at 16 rpm were also produced but it was never a popular format. My parents had at least one that I remember well - a recording of Paul Gallico's The Snow Goose. I remember the reader had a really good theatrical voice - might even have been someone famous. Roger (Dodger67) (talk) 16:22, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Herbert Marshall made a recording, but I can't find any reference to any 16 rpm recording. -- Jack of Oz [pleasantries] 19:57, 10 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

looking for a chess board online[edit]

Hi all, I'm looking for a chess board app, ie. where you can move the pieces around on the board, and play a game with someone, but not a chess server. I don't want to play games with other people online, I just want to play with my nephew on Skype. He has a physical chess set, but I can't get one here in China, or at any rate I don't have a clue where to look. I can't find anything online, no matter how hard I try. I don't care whether it saves games or not, since I can reload them manually. I just need a kind of javascript-based web app that lets me move the pieces around. Thanks, IBE (talk) 16:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

User:Bubba73 is our resident chess guru, so he might know. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 17:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Hope you don't mind but I linked his username so that he gets a notification about this thread when he signs in. Dismas|(talk) 00:33, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Can you clarify why you don't want an internet chess server? I mean, that is exactly the appropriate tool/service for playing chess with you nephew on Skype... SemanticMantis (talk) 18:53, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Then he needs two computers - the ipad for skyping, and another for chessing. He uses an offline physical board for the chess, so having another would be irritating. Also, you can't usually take moves back, or move the pieces speculatively, and I don't want to lose that freedom. IBE (talk) 10:04, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
@It's Been Emotional:Ah, that makes sense. Your clarification allows me to suggest another possibility: use screen sharing on Skype, then run whatever local chess program you like. You do have to move for him, but you get the freedom to make speculative moves and go forward/back in a sequence. Also, I'm not sure that an ipad allows multi-tasking to the point of allowing him to have skype running and simultaneously be able to use a separate web app. If you just want an online app to replace your board in the two-boards setup, this [1] will suit your purposes, I found it by searching /light practice chess board online/ SemanticMantis (talk) 16:50, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thankyou @SemanticMantis:that's what I was after. Actually, I use chess.com, and use their analysis feature all the time, but I thought it was only for finished games. You can play a game and use the analysis board after backtracking, but I didn't know how to bring it up on it's own - nor did I know such a feature existed. Very useful. World Cup kit[edit]

Why are Germany playing in their second kit against Brazil? Not very easy to confuse white with yellow after all. What are the rules on such things? 92.21.123.121 (talk) 20:04, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]

See sports marketing. Come back if there is something in that article you don't understand.--Jayron32 20:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
I understand sports marketing, what is it exactly in that article you think I ought to read? Why does it explain the change of kit for the semi-final? 92.21.123.121 (talk) 20:36, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
It could very well have to do with which team is considered the "home" team in the match. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:05, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Almost. It has to do with which group a given team comes out of. Brazil was in group A, so they wore their standard yellow. Germany would have gone with black to avoid any possibility of confusion. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:18, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Teams choose which uniform to wear based on what will generate the most income for them. Germany likely needed to wear their second kit to generate sales of it in a high profile match. --Jayron32 21:08, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Considering they're currently ahead 5-0, they better hope they got enough sales in the first half. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 21:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
7-1 final. Ugh. Fittingly, Brazil was wearing a lemon-colored shirt today. ←Baseball Bugs What's up, Doc? carrots→ 22:14, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
In answer to the original question, without the unhelpful cynicism or speculation, here's FIFA's regulations on the current World Cup, which includes a brief description of the use of "equipment" on page 32. Contrasting kit includes contrasting shirts, shorts and/or socks. Apologies you didn't get a suitable response above. The Rambling Man (talk) 21:19, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
Thank's Rambling Man, it seems one has to sort the wheat from the bollocks in the answers here. 89.241.18.228 (talk) 23:12, 8 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
S'ok. This is the standard chatroom behaviour here I'm afraid. The Rambling Man (talk) 06:12, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
White is a clash with yellow according to the FIFA regulations. Brazil do have blue and dark green change kits but haven't worn them at this tournament so far. I may be wrong, but this is the first time Brazil have worn their blue shorts at this World Cup (a clash with Germany's shorts). Hack (talk) 06:18, 9 July 2014 (UTC)[reply]
