Pronunciation of name "Szilassi"[edit]

How do you pronounce "Szilassi" (as in Lajos Szilassi) ? 2601:18A:C500:C00:40B4:7EC2:17AC:6153 (talk) 03:50, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]

"J" would be English consonantal "y". "Sz" in Hungarian is an ordinary [s] (while in Polish it's more like English "sh"). AnonMoos (talk) 05:15, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
An ⟨s⟩, on the other hand, is pronounced like [ʃ], so together it should sound like [silɒʃːi]. That is how the pronunciation is rendered here, with stress indicated on the first syllable, like SEE-la-shi. Caveat. Some Hungarian names use a "historic" spelling, and then the digraph ⟨ss⟩ can stand for [s] or [sː], so you just have to know the way the name is traditionally pronounced.  --Lambiam 08:19, 13 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
More SEE-luh-shi, the middle vowel sounding pretty much like the vowel in lush. If the a had an acute accent, then it would be more of a -la- sound. Mathglot (talk) 00:31, 19 July 2022 (UTC)[reply]
