Hex grid map[edit]

Is there a name for this style of hexagonal grid map[1] for displaying data? I googled "hex grid map" but it was mostly computer games and board game related.

Are there any open source libraries there there that could produce this style of maps?

I'm not sure which Ref Desk is the right place for cartography questions, so I chose this one since cartography is related to math. Feel free to move this question if it's not at the right place.731Butai (talk) 06:54, 5 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]

This SE entry may be relevant [2]. I googled "density map hexagonal" which seemed to give results more in line with what you're looking for. I've actually done a few density maps but more in the line of plotting individual locations with small dots, which works well as long as the population isn't too big. --RDBury (talk) 04:10, 6 January 2016 (UTC)[reply]
